The Temptation of Jesus
4Â Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2Â For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry.
3Â During that time the devil[a] came and said to him, âIf you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.â
4Â But Jesus told him, âNo! The Scriptures say,
âPeople do not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.â[b]â
5Â Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, 6Â and said, âIf you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say,
âHe will order his angels to protect you.
And they will hold you up with their hands
so you wonât even hurt your foot on a stone.â[c]â
7Â Jesus responded, âThe Scriptures also say, âYou must not test the Lord your God.â[d]â
8Â Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9Â âI will give it all to you,â he said, âif you will kneel down and worship me.â
10Â âGet out of here, Satan,â Jesus told him. âFor the Scriptures say,

11Â Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.

John 1:19-2:25
New Living Translation
The Testimony of John the Baptist
19Â This was Johnâs testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistants[a] from Jerusalem to ask John, âWho are you?â 20Â He came right out and said, âI am not the Messiah.â
21Â âWell then, who are you?â they asked. âAre you Elijah?â
âNo,â he replied.
âAre you the Prophet we are expecting?â[b]
âNo.â
22Â âThen who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?â
23Â John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah:
âI am a voice shouting in the wilderness,
âClear the way for the Lordâs coming!ââ[c]
24Â Then the Pharisees who had been sent 25Â asked him, âIf you arenât the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?â
26Â John told them, âI baptize with[d] water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. 27Â Though his ministry follows mine, Iâm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal.â
28Â This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing.
Jesus, the Lamb of God
29Â The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, âLook! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30Â He is the one I was talking about when I said, âA man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.â 31Â I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.â
32Â Then John testified, âI saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him. 33Â I didnât know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, âThe one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.â 34Â I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.[e]â
The First Disciples
35Â The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. 36Â As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, âLook! There is the Lamb of God!â 37Â When Johnâs two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.
38Â Jesus looked around and saw them following. âWhat do you want?â he asked them.
They replied, âRabbiâ (which means âTeacherâ), âwhere are you staying?â
39Â âCome and see,â he said. It was about four oâclock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.
40Â Andrew, Simon Peterâs brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. 41Â Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, âWe have found the Messiahâ (which means âChristâ[f]).
42Â Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, âYour name is Simon, son of Johnâbut you will be called Cephasâ (which means âPeterâ[g]).
43Â The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, âCome, follow me.â 44Â Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peterâs hometown.
45Â Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, âWe have found the very person Moses[h] and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.â
46Â âNazareth!â exclaimed Nathanael. âCan anything good come from Nazareth?â
âCome and see for yourself,â Philip replied.
47Â As they approached, Jesus said, âNow here is a genuine son of Israelâa man of complete integrity.â
48Â âHow do you know about me?â Nathanael asked.
Jesus replied, âI could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.â
49Â Then Nathanael exclaimed, âRabbi, you are the Son of Godâthe King of Israel!â
50Â Jesus asked him, âDo you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.â 51Â Then he said, âI tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.[i]â
The Wedding at Cana
2Â The next day[j] there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesusâ mother was there, 2Â and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. 3Â The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesusâ mother told him, âThey have no more wine.â
4Â âDear woman, thatâs not our problem,â Jesus replied. âMy time has not yet come.â
5Â But his mother told the servants, âDo whatever he tells you.â
6Â Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons.[k] 7Â Jesus told the servants, âFill the jars with water.â When the jars had been filled, 8Â he said, âNow dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.â So the servants followed his instructions.
9Â When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. 10Â âA host always serves the best wine first,â he said. âThen, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!â
11Â This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
12Â After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples.
Jesus Clears the Temple
13Â It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. 14Â In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money. 15Â Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changersâ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables. 16Â Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, âGet these things out of here. Stop turning my Fatherâs house into a marketplace!â
17Â Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: âPassion for Godâs house will consume me.â[l]
18Â But the Jewish leaders demanded, âWhat are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.â
19Â âAll right,â Jesus replied. âDestroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.â
20Â âWhat!â they exclaimed. âIt has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?â 21Â But when Jesus said âthis temple,â he meant his own body. 22Â After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said.
Jesus and Nicodemus
23Â Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him. 24Â But Jesus didnât trust them, because he knew all about people. 25Â No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each personâs heart.

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah
19Â Now this was Johnâs(A) testimony when the Jewish leaders[a](B) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20Â He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, âI am not the Messiah.â(C)
21Â They asked him, âThen who are you? Are you Elijah?â(D)
He said, âI am not.â
âAre you the Prophet?â(E)
He answered, âNo.â
22Â Finally they said, âWho are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?â
23Â John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, âI am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(F) âMake straight the way for the Lord.ââ[b](G)
24Â Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25Â questioned him, âWhy then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?â
26Â âI baptize with[c] water,â(H) John replied, âbut among you stands one you do not know. 27Â He is the one who comes after me,(I) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.â(J)
28Â This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan,(K) where John was baptizing.
John Testifies About Jesus
29Â The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, âLook, the Lamb of God,(L) who takes away the sin of the world!(M) 30Â This is the one I meant when I said, âA man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.â(N) 31Â I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.â
32Â Then John gave this testimony: âI saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.(O) 33Â And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water(P) told me, âThe man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.â(Q) 34Â I have seen and I testify that this is Godâs Chosen One.â[d](R)
Johnâs Disciples Follow Jesus(S)
35Â The next day John(T) was there again with two of his disciples. 36Â When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, âLook, the Lamb of God!â(U)
37Â When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38Â Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, âWhat do you want?â
They said, âRabbiâ(V) (which means âTeacherâ), âwhere are you staying?â
39Â âCome,â he replied, âand you will see.â
So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40Â Andrew, Simon Peterâs brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41Â The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, âWe have found the Messiahâ (that is, the Christ).(W) 42Â And he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said, âYou are Simon son of John. You will be called(X) Cephasâ (which, when translated, is Peter[e]).(Y)
Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael
43Â The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip,(Z) he said to him, âFollow me.â(AA)
44Â Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.(AB) 45Â Philip found Nathanael(AC) and told him, âWe have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,(AD) and about whom the prophets also wrote(AE)âJesus of Nazareth,(AF) the son of Joseph.â(AG)
46Â âNazareth! Can anything good come from there?â(AH) Nathanael asked.
âCome and see,â said Philip.
47Â When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, âHere truly is an Israelite(AI) in whom there is no deceit.â(AJ)
48Â âHow do you know me?â Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, âI saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.â
49Â Then Nathanael declared, âRabbi,(AK) you are the Son of God;(AL) you are the king of Israel.â(AM)
50Â Jesus said, âYou believe[f] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.â 51Â He then added, âVery truly I tell you,[g] you[h] will see âheaven open,(AN) and the angels of God ascending and descending(AO) onâ[i] the Son of Man.â(AP)
Jesus Changes Water Into Wine
2Â On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.(AQ) Jesusâ mother(AR) was there, 2Â and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3Â When the wine was gone, Jesusâ mother said to him, âThey have no more wine.â
4Â âWoman,[j](AS) why do you involve me?â(AT) Jesus replied. âMy hour(AU) has not yet come.â
5Â His mother said to the servants, âDo whatever he tells you.â(AV)
6Â Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,(AW) each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[k]
7Â Jesus said to the servants, âFill the jars with waterâ; so they filled them to the brim.
8Â Then he told them, âNow draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.â
They did so, 9Â and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.(AX) He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10Â and said, âEveryone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.â
11Â What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs(AY) through which he revealed his glory;(AZ) and his disciples believed in him.(BA)
12Â After this he went down to Capernaum(BB) with his mother(BC) and brothers(BD) and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
Jesus Clears the Temple Courts(BE)
13Â When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BF) Jesus went up to Jerusalem.(BG) 14Â In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,(BH) and others sitting at tables exchanging money.(BI) 15Â So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16Â To those who sold doves he said, âGet these out of here! Stop turning my Fatherâs house(BJ) into a market!â 17Â His disciples remembered that it is written: âZeal for your house will consume me.â[l](BK)
18Â The Jews(BL) then responded to him, âWhat sign(BM) can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?â(BN)
19Â Jesus answered them, âDestroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.â(BO)
20Â They replied, âIt has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?â 21Â But the temple he had spoken of was his body.(BP) 22Â After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said.(BQ) Then they believed the scripture(BR) and the words that Jesus had spoken.
23Â Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(BS) many people saw the signs(BT) he was performing and believed(BU) in his name.[m] 24Â But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25Â He did not need any testimony about mankind,(BV) for he knew what was in each person.(BW)
