The Power of Faith over a Demon
37 The next day,(A) when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. 38 Just then a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, because he’s my only child.(B) 39 Often a spirit seizes him; suddenly he shrieks, and it throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth;[a] wounding[b] him, it hardly ever leaves him. 40 I begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”(C)
41 Jesus replied, “You unbelieving and rebellious[c] generation!(D) How long will I be with you and put up with you?(E) Bring your son here.”
42 As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, cured the boy,(F) and gave him back to his father.(G) 43 And they were all astonished at the greatness of God.(H)
The Second Prediction of His Death
While everyone was amazed at all the things He was doing,(I) He told His disciples, 44 “Let these words sink in:[d] The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”(J)
45 But they did not understand this statement;(K) it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it,(L) and they were afraid to ask Him about it.[e]
Who Is the Greatest?
46 Then an argument started among them about who would be the greatest of them.(M) 47 But Jesus, knowing the thoughts of their hearts,(N) took a little child and had him stand next to Him. 48 He told them, “Whoever welcomes[f] this little child in My name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me welcomes Him who sent Me.(O) For whoever is least among you—this one is great.”(P)
In His Name
49 John responded,(Q) “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in Your name,(R) and we tried to stop him because he does not follow us.”(S)
50 “Don’t stop him,” Jesus told him, “because whoever is not against you is for you.”[g](T)
The Journey to Jerusalem
51 When the days were coming to a close for Him to be taken up,[h](U) He determined[i](V) to journey to Jerusalem.(W) 52 He sent messengers ahead of Him,(X) and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans(Y) to make preparations for Him. 53 But they did not welcome Him, because He determined to journey to Jerusalem.(Z) 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?”[j](AA)
55 But He turned and rebuked them,[k] 56 and they went to another village.
Following Jesus
57 As they were traveling on the road someone said to Him,(AB) “I will follow You wherever You go!”
58 Jesus told him, “Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky[l] have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.” 59 Then He said to another, “Follow Me.”
“Lord,” he said, “first let me go bury my father.”[m]
60 But He told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.”(AC)
61 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house.”(AD)
62 But Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Sending Out the Seventy
10 After this, the Lord appointed 70[n] others, and He sent them ahead of Him in pairs to every town and place where He Himself was about to go. 2 He told them:(AE) “The harvest(AF) is abundant, but the workers(AG) are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.(AH) 3 Now go; I’m sending you out like lambs among wolves.(AI) 4 Don’t carry a money-bag,(AJ) traveling bag,(AK) or sandals;(AL) don’t greet anyone along the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace(AM) to this household.’ 6 If a son of peace[o] is there, your peace(AN) will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages.(AO) Don’t be moving from house to house. 8 When you enter any town, and they welcome you, eat the things set before you.(AP) 9 Heal the sick(AQ) who are there, and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(AR) has come near(AS) you.’ 10 When you enter any town, and they don’t welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘We are wiping off as a witness against you(AT) even the dust of your town that clings to our feet. Know this for certain: The kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, on that day(AU) it will be more tolerable for Sodom(AV) than for that town.(AW)
Unrepentant Towns
13 “Woe(AX) to you,(AY) Chorazin!(AZ) Woe to you, Bethsaida!(BA) For if the miracles(BB) that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,(BC) they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes!(BD) 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment(BE) than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,(BF) will you be exalted to heaven?(BG) No, you will go down to Hades!(BH) 16 Whoever listens to you listens to Me.(BI) Whoever rejects you rejects Me.(BJ) And whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”(BK)
The Return of the Seventy
17 The Seventy[p](BL) returned with joy, saying,(BM) “Lord, even the demons(BN) submit to us in Your name.”(BO)
18 He said to them, “I watched Satan(BP) fall from heaven like a lightning flash.(BQ) 19 Look, I have given you the authority(BR) to trample(BS) on snakes(BT) and scorpions(BU) and over all the power of the enemy;(BV) nothing will ever harm you.(BW) 20 However, don’t rejoice that[q] the spirits(BX) submit to you,(BY) but rejoice that your names are written(BZ) in heaven.”
The Son Reveals the Father
21 In that same hour(CA) He[r] rejoiced in the Holy[s] Spirit(CB) and said, “I praise[t] You, Father,(CC) Lord of heaven and earth,(CD) because You have hidden these things from the wise and the learned(CE) and have revealed them to infants.(CF) Yes, Father, because this was Your good pleasure.[u](CG) 22 All things have[v] been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son desires[w] to reveal Him.”(CH)
23 Then turning to His disciples He said privately, “The eyes that see the things you see are blessed! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things you see yet didn’t see them; to hear the things you hear yet didn’t hear them.”(CI)

Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy(A)
37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”
41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,”(B) Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.
Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time
While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”(C) 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it,(D) and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.(E) 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts,(F) took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(G) For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”(H)
49 “Master,”(I) said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”(J)
Samaritan Opposition
51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,(K) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.(L) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan(M) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John(N) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[a]?”(O) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus(P)
57 As they were walking along the road,(Q) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(R) has no place to lay his head.”
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”(S)
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”(T)
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”(U)
62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two(V)(W)(X)
10 After this the Lord(Y) appointed seventy-two[b] others(Z) and sent them two by two(AA) ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.(AB) 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.(AC) 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.(AD) 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.
5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages.(AE) Do not move around from house to house.
8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.(AF) 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(AG) has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you.(AH) Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’(AI) 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom(AJ) than for that town.(AK)
13 “Woe to you,(AL) Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! 22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father.(AW) No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”(AX)
23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”(AY)
