19 And Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. And there was written, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. 20 This title therefore read many of the Jews, [a]for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, and in Latin, and in Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but, that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(A) the king of the jews.(B) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(C) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”(D)

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
