16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(A)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(B)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(C) he went out to the place of the Skull(D) (which in Aramaic(E) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others(F)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(G) the king of the jews.(H) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(I) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”(J)

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled(K) that said,

“They divided my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.”[a](L)

So this is what the soldiers did.

25 Near the cross(M) of Jesus stood his mother,(N) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(O) 26 When Jesus saw his mother(P) there, and the disciple whom he loved(Q) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

The Death of Jesus(R)

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(S) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(T) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(U) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(V) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(W) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(X) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(Y) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(Z) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(AA) 35 The man who saw it(AB) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(AC) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(AD) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[c](AE) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[d](AF)

The Burial of Jesus(AG)

38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(AH) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(AI) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[e] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(AJ) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(AK) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(AL) and since the tomb was nearby,(AM) they laid Jesus there.

The Empty Tomb(AN)

20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene(AO) went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.(AP) So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved,(AQ) and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”(AR)

So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.(AS) Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in(AT) at the strips of linen(AU) lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head.(AV) The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first,(AW) also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture(AX) that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)(AY) 10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb(AZ) 12 and saw two angels in white,(BA) seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”(BB)

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”(BC) 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,(BD) but she did not realize that it was Jesus.(BE)

15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?(BF) Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,(BG) “Rabboni!”(BH) (which means “Teacher”).

17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers(BI) and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father(BJ) and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

18 Mary Magdalene(BK) went to the disciples(BL) with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders,(BM) Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace(BN) be with you!”(BO) 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.(BP) The disciples were overjoyed(BQ) when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!(BR) As the Father has sent me,(BS) I am sending you.”(BT) 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.(BU) 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”(BV)

Jesus Appears to Thomas

24 Now Thomas(BW) (also known as Didymus[f]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side,(BX) I will not believe.”(BY)

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace(BZ) be with you!”(CA) 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”(CB)

28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed;(CC) blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”(CD)

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

30 Jesus performed many other signs(CE) in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.(CF) 31 But these are written that you may believe[g](CG) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,(CH) and that by believing you may have life in his name.(CI)

16 (A)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [a]and led Him away.

The King on a Cross(B)

17 (C)And He, bearing His cross, (D)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (E)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (F)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 (G)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

(H)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Behold Your Mother

25 (I)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (J)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (K)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (L)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (M)to his own home.

It Is Finished

28 After this, Jesus, [b]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (N)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (O)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (P)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31 (Q)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, (R)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a (S)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (T)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is (U)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may (V)believe. 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (W)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (X)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(Y)

38 (Z)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, (AA)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And (AB)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of (AC)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and (AD)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So (AE)there they laid Jesus, (AF)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

The Empty Tomb(AG)

20 Now the (AH)first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the (AI)stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the (AJ)other disciple, (AK)whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

(AL)Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw (AM)the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and (AN)the [c]handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the (AO)other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not [d]know the (AP)Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

11 (AQ)But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

14 (AR)Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and (AS)did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

16 Jesus said to her, (AT)“Mary!”

She turned and said to [e]Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).

17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet (AU)ascended to My Father; but go to (AV)My brethren and say to them, (AW)‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to (AX)My God and your God.’ ”

18 (AY)Mary Magdalene came and told the [f]disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

The Apostles Commissioned(AZ)

19 (BA)Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were [g]assembled, for (BB)fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, (BC)“Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He (BD)showed them His hands and His side. (BE)Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! (BF)As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (BG)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Seeing and Believing

24 Now Thomas, (BH)called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and (BI)reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be (BJ)unbelieving, but believing.”

28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, [h]“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. (BK)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

That You May Believe

30 And (BL)truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 (BM)but these are written that (BN)you may believe that Jesus (BO)is the Christ, the Son of God, (BP)and that believing you may have life in His name.
