New American Standard Bible

3 (A)All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him [a]not even one thing came into being that has come into being. 4 (B)In Him was life, and the life was (C)the Light of mankind. 5 And (D)the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [b]grasp it.

The Witness John the Baptist

6 A man [c]came, one sent from God, and his name was (E)John. 7 [d]He came [e](F)as a witness, to testify about the Light, (G)so that all might believe through him. 8 [f](H)He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

9 [g]This was (I)the true Light [h]that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. 10 He was in the world, and (J)the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not [i]know Him.

New International Version

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.(A) 4 In him was life,(B) and that life was the light(C) of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness,(D) and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.(E)

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(F) 7 He came as a witness to testify(G) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(H) 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light(I) that gives light to everyone(J) was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,(K) the world did not recognize him.
