Baskets of Figs and the Returnees

24 After (A)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken into exile Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the officials of Judah with the craftsmen and metalworkers from Jerusalem and had brought them to Babylon, the Lord showed me: behold, two (B)baskets of figs placed before the temple of the Lord. One basket had very good figs, like (C)first-ripe figs, and the other basket had (D)very bad figs which could not be eaten due to rottenness. Then the Lord said to me, “(E)What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “Figs: the good figs are very good, and the bad ones, very bad, which cannot be eaten due to rottenness.”

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Like these good figs, so I will regard (F)as good the captives of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans. For I will set My eyes on them for good, and I will (G)bring them back to this land; and I will (H)build them up and not overthrow them, and I will (I)plant them and not uproot them. I will also give them a (J)heart to know Me, for I am the Lord; and they will be (K)My people, and I will be their God, for they will (L)return to Me wholeheartedly.

‘But like the (M)bad figs which cannot be eaten due to rottenness,’ indeed, this is what the Lord says, ‘so will I give up (N)Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials, and the (O)remnant of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and the ones who live in the land of (P)Egypt. I will (Q)make them an object of terror and an evil for all the kingdoms of the earth, as a (R)disgrace and a proverb, a taunt and a (S)curse in all the places where I will scatter them. 10 And I will send the (T)sword, the famine, and the plague upon them until they are eliminated from the land which I gave to them and their forefathers.’”

Prophecy of the Captivity

25 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the (U)fourth year of (V)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (that was the (W)first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), the word which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the (X)people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, “From the (Y)thirteenth year of (Z)Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, [a]these (AA)twenty-three years the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken to you (AB)again and again, but you have not listened. And the Lord has sent to you all His (AC)servants the prophets again and again, but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear, saying, ‘(AD)Turn now, everyone from his evil way and from the evil of your deeds, and live on the land which the Lord has given to you and your forefathers (AE)forever and ever; and (AF)do not follow other gods to [b]serve them and to [c]worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands, then I will do you no harm.’ Yet you have not listened to Me,” declares the Lord, “in order to (AG)provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm.

“Therefore this is what the Lord of armies says: ‘Because you have not obeyed My words, behold, I will (AH)send and take all the families of the north,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, (AI)My servant, and will bring them against this land and against its inhabitants and against all these surrounding nations; and I will [d]completely destroy them and (AJ)make them an object of horror and [e]hissing, and an everlasting place of ruins. 10 Moreover, I will (AK)eliminate from them the voice of jubilation and the voice of joy, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride, the (AL)sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. 11 (AM)This entire land will be a place of ruins and an object of horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for (AN)seventy years.

Babylon Will Be Judged

12 ‘Then it will be (AO)when seventy years are completed I will (AP)punish the king of Babylon and that nation,’ declares the Lord, ‘for their wrongdoing, and the land of the Chaldeans; and (AQ)I will make it an everlasting desolation. 13 I will bring upon that land all My words which I have pronounced against it, all that is written in (AR)this book which Jeremiah has prophesied against (AS)all the nations. 14 ([f]For (AT)many nations and great kings will make slaves of them, even them; and I will (AU)repay them according to their deeds and according to the work of their hands.)’”

15 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to me: “Take this (AV)cup of the wine of wrath from My hand and give it to all the nations to whom I send you, to drink from it. 16 Then they will (AW)drink and loudly vomit and act insanely because of the sword that I am going to send among them.”

17 So I took the cup from the Lords hand and (AX)gave it to all the nations to whom the Lord sent me, to drink from it: 18 To (AY)Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, and its kings and its officials, to make them places of ruins, objects of horror, [g]hissing, and a curse, as it is this day; 19 To (AZ)Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, and all his people; 20 and to all the (BA)foreign [h]people, all the kings of the (BB)land of Uz, all the kings of the land of the (BC)Philistines (that is, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of (BD)Ashdod); 21 To (BE)Edom, (BF)Moab, and the sons of (BG)Ammon; 22 and to all the kings of (BH)Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of (BI)the coastlands which are beyond the sea; 23 and to (BJ)Dedan, Tema, (BK)Buz, and all who (BL)trim the corners of their hair; 24 and to all the kings of (BM)Arabia and all the kings of the (BN)foreign [i]people who live in the desert; 25 and to all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of (BO)Elam, and all the kings of (BP)Media; 26 and to all the kings of the north, near and far, one with another; and (BQ)all the kingdoms of the earth which are on the face of the ground; and the king of [j](BR)Sheshach shall drink it after them.

27 “And you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “(BS)Drink, be drunk, vomit, fall down, and do not get up, because of the (BT)sword which I am sending among you.”’ 28 And if they (BU)refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Lord of armies says: “(BV)You shall certainly drink! 29 For behold, I am (BW)beginning to inflict disaster on this city which is (BX)called by My name, so should you be completely free from punishment? You will not be free from punishment, for (BY)I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth,” declares the Lord of armies.’

30 “Therefore you shall prophesy against them all these words, and you shall say to them,

‘The (BZ)Lord will (CA)roar from on high
And raise His voice from His holy dwelling;
He will roar forcefully against His [k]fold.
He will shout like those who tread the grapes,
Against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31 A clamor has come to the end of the earth,
Because the Lord has (CB)a controversy with the nations.
He is entering into (CC)judgment with [l]humanity;
As for the wicked, He has turned them over to the sword,’ declares the Lord.”

32 This is what the Lord of armies says:
“Behold, evil is going out
From (CD)nation to nation,
And a great (CE)storm is being stirred up
From the remotest parts of the earth.

33 “Those (CF)put to death by the Lord on that day will be from one end of the earth to the [m]other. They will (CG)not be mourned, gathered, or buried; they will be like (CH)dung on the face of the ground.

34 Wail, you shepherds, and cry out;
(CI)Wallow in the dust, you masters of the flock;
For the days of your (CJ)slaughter and your dispersions [n]have come,
And you will fall like a precious vessel.
35 [o]There will be (CK)no sanctuary for the shepherds,
Nor escape for the masters of the flock.
36 Hear the sound of the cry of the shepherds,
And the wailing of the masters of the flock!
For the Lord is destroying their pasture,
37 And the peaceful (CL)grazing places are devastated
Because of the (CM)fierce anger of the Lord.
38 He has left His hiding place (CN)like the lion;
For their land has become a horror
Because of the fierceness of the [p]oppressing sword
And because of His fierce anger.”

Cities of Judah Warned

26 In the beginning of the reign of (CO)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the Lord, saying, “This is what the Lord says: ‘(CP)Stand in the courtyard of the Lords house, and speak to all the cities of Judah who have (CQ)come to worship in the Lords house (CR)all the words that I have commanded you to speak to them. (CS)Do not omit a word! (CT)Perhaps they will listen and everyone will turn from his evil way, and (CU)I will relent of the disaster which I am planning to inflict on them because of the evil of their deeds.’ And you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: “(CV)If you do not listen to Me, to (CW)walk in My Law which I have set before you, to listen to the words of (CX)My servants the prophets, whom I have been sending to you again and again, but you have not listened; then I will make this house like (CY)Shiloh, and I will make this city a (CZ)curse to all the nations of the earth.”’”

A Plot to Murder Jeremiah

The (DA)priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord. Yet when Jeremiah finished speaking everything that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, “(DB)You must die! Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘This house will be like Shiloh and this city will be (DC)in ruins, without inhabitant’?” And (DD)all the people gathered to Jeremiah at the house of the Lord.

10 When the (DE)officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the Lord and sat at the (DF)entrance of the New Gate of the Lords house. 11 Then the priests and the prophets (DG)spoke to the officials and to all the people, saying, “A (DH)death sentence for this man! For he has prophesied (DI)against this city, just as you have heard with your own ears!”

12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and to all the people, saying, “(DJ)The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard. 13 Now then, (DK)reform your ways and your deeds and obey the voice of the Lord your God; and the Lord will relent of the disaster which He has pronounced against you. 14 But as for me, behold, (DL)I am in your hands; do with me as is good and right in your sight. 15 Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring (DM)innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city and its inhabitants; for truly the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these words [q]so that you hear them.”

Jeremiah Is Spared

16 Then the officials and all the people (DN)said to the priests and the prophets, “No (DO)death sentence for this man! For he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.” 17 Then (DP)some of the elders of the land rose up and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying, 18 [r](DQ)Micah of Moresheth used to prophesy in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah; and he spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, ‘This is what the Lord of armies has said:

(DR)Zion will be plowed like a field,
And Jerusalem will become heaps of ruins,
And the (DS)mountain of the house like the [s]high places of a forest.”’

19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah actually put him to death? Did he not (DT)fear the Lord and plead for the favor of the Lord, and (DU)the Lord relented of the disaster which He had pronounced against them? But we are (DV)committing a great evil against our own lives!”

20 Indeed, there was also a man who used to prophesy in the name of the Lord, Uriah the son of Shemaiah from (DW)Kiriath-jearim; and he prophesied against this city and against this land words similar to all those of Jeremiah. 21 When King Jehoiakim and all his warriors and all the officials heard his words, then the (DX)king sought to put him to death; but Uriah heard about it, and he was afraid, so he (DY)fled and went to Egypt. 22 Then King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt: (DZ)Elnathan the son of Achbor and certain men with him, to Egypt. 23 And they brought Uriah from Egypt and led him to King Jehoiakim, who (EA)killed him with a sword and threw his dead body into the [t]burial place of the [u]common people.

24 But the hand of (EB)Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, so that he was (EC)not handed over to the people to put him to death.

Two Baskets of Figs

24 After Jehoiachin[a](A) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and the officials, the skilled workers and the artisans of Judah were carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Lord showed me two baskets of figs(B) placed in front of the temple of the Lord. One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early;(C) the other basket had very bad(D) figs, so bad they could not be eaten.

Then the Lord asked me, “What do you see,(E) Jeremiah?”

“Figs,” I answered. “The good ones are very good, but the bad ones are so bad they cannot be eaten.”

Then the word of the Lord came to me: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Like these good figs, I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I sent(F) away from this place to the land of the Babylonians.[b] My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back(G) to this land. I will build(H) them up and not tear them down; I will plant(I) them and not uproot them. I will give them a heart to know(J) me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people,(K) and I will be their God, for they will return(L) to me with all their heart.(M)

“‘But like the bad(N) figs, which are so bad they cannot be eaten,’ says the Lord, ‘so will I deal with Zedekiah(O) king of Judah, his officials(P) and the survivors(Q) from Jerusalem, whether they remain in this land or live in Egypt.(R) I will make them abhorrent(S) and an offense to all the kingdoms of the earth, a reproach and a byword,(T) a curse[c](U) and an object of ridicule, wherever I banish(V) them. 10 I will send the sword,(W) famine(X) and plague(Y) against them until they are destroyed from the land I gave to them and their ancestors.(Z)’”

Seventy Years of Captivity

25 The word came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim(AA) son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar(AB) king of Babylon. So Jeremiah the prophet said to all the people of Judah(AC) and to all those living in Jerusalem: For twenty-three years—from the thirteenth year of Josiah(AD) son of Amon king of Judah until this very day—the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again,(AE) but you have not listened.(AF)

And though the Lord has sent all his servants the prophets(AG) to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention.(AH) They said, “Turn(AI) now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land(AJ) the Lord gave to you and your ancestors for ever and ever. Do not follow other gods(AK) to serve and worship them; do not arouse my anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you.”

“But you did not listen to me,” declares the Lord, “and you have aroused(AL) my anger with what your hands have made,(AM) and you have brought harm(AN) to yourselves.”

Therefore the Lord Almighty says this: “Because you have not listened to my words, I will summon(AO) all the peoples of the north(AP) and my servant(AQ) Nebuchadnezzar(AR) king of Babylon,” declares the Lord, “and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy[d](AS) them and make them an object of horror and scorn,(AT) and an everlasting ruin.(AU) 10 I will banish from them the sounds(AV) of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom,(AW) the sound of millstones(AX) and the light of the lamp.(AY) 11 This whole country will become a desolate wasteland,(AZ) and these nations will serve(BA) the king of Babylon seventy years.(BB)

12 “But when the seventy years(BC) are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon(BD) and his nation, the land of the Babylonians,[e] for their guilt,” declares the Lord, “and will make it desolate(BE) forever. 13 I will bring on that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written(BF) in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations. 14 They themselves will be enslaved(BG) by many nations(BH) and great kings; I will repay(BI) them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”

The Cup of God’s Wrath

15 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup(BJ) filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send(BK) you drink it. 16 When they drink(BL) it, they will stagger(BM) and go mad(BN) because of the sword(BO) I will send among them.”

17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom he sent(BP) me drink it: 18 Jerusalem(BQ) and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin(BR) and an object of horror and scorn,(BS) a curse[f](BT)—as they are today;(BU) 19 Pharaoh king(BV) of Egypt,(BW) his attendants, his officials and all his people, 20 and all the foreign people there; all the kings of Uz;(BX) all the kings of the Philistines(BY) (those of Ashkelon,(BZ) Gaza,(CA) Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod); 21 Edom,(CB) Moab(CC) and Ammon;(CD) 22 all the kings of Tyre(CE) and Sidon;(CF) the kings of the coastlands(CG) across the sea; 23 Dedan,(CH) Tema,(CI) Buz(CJ) and all who are in distant places[g];(CK) 24 all the kings of Arabia(CL) and all the kings of the foreign people(CM) who live in the wilderness; 25 all the kings of Zimri,(CN) Elam(CO) and Media;(CP) 26 and all the kings of the north,(CQ) near and far, one after the other—all the kingdoms(CR) on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshak[h](CS) will drink it too.

27 “Then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk(CT) and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword(CU) I will send among you.’ 28 But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink(CV), tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: You must drink it! 29 See, I am beginning to bring disaster(CW) on the city that bears my Name,(CX) and will you indeed go unpunished?(CY) You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword(CZ) on all(DA) who live on the earth,(DB) declares the Lord Almighty.’

30 “Now prophesy all these words against them and say to them:

“‘The Lord will roar(DC) from on high;
    he will thunder(DD) from his holy dwelling(DE)
    and roar mightily against his land.
He will shout like those who tread(DF) the grapes,
    shout against all who live on the earth.
31 The tumult(DG) will resound to the ends of the earth,
    for the Lord will bring charges(DH) against the nations;
he will bring judgment(DI) on all(DJ) mankind
    and put the wicked to the sword,(DK)’”
declares the Lord.

32 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Look! Disaster(DL) is spreading
    from nation to nation;(DM)
a mighty storm(DN) is rising
    from the ends of the earth.”(DO)

33 At that time those slain(DP) by the Lord will be everywhere—from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned or gathered(DQ) up or buried,(DR) but will be like dung lying on the ground.

34 Weep and wail, you shepherds;(DS)
    roll(DT) in the dust, you leaders of the flock.
For your time to be slaughtered(DU) has come;
    you will fall like the best of the rams.[i](DV)
35 The shepherds will have nowhere to flee,
    the leaders of the flock no place to escape.(DW)
36 Hear the cry(DX) of the shepherds,(DY)
    the wailing of the leaders of the flock,
    for the Lord is destroying their pasture.
37 The peaceful meadows will be laid waste
    because of the fierce anger of the Lord.
38 Like a lion(DZ) he will leave his lair,
    and their land will become desolate(EA)
because of the sword[j] of the oppressor(EB)
    and because of the Lord’s fierce anger.(EC)

Jeremiah Threatened With Death

26 Early in the reign of Jehoiakim(ED) son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came from the Lord: “This is what the Lord says: Stand in the courtyard(EE) of the Lord’s house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the house of the Lord.(EF) Tell(EG) them everything I command you; do not omit(EH) a word. Perhaps they will listen and each will turn(EI) from their evil ways. Then I will relent(EJ) and not inflict on them the disaster I was planning because of the evil they have done. Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: If you do not listen(EK) to me and follow my law,(EL) which I have set before you, and if you do not listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I have sent to you again and again (though you have not listened(EM)), then I will make this house like Shiloh(EN) and this city a curse[k](EO) among all the nations of the earth.’”

The priests, the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speak these words in the house of the Lord. But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the Lord had commanded(EP) him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized(EQ) him and said, “You must die!(ER) Why do you prophesy in the Lord’s name that this house will be like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted?”(ES) And all the people crowded(ET) around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.

10 When the officials(EU) of Judah heard about these things, they went up from the royal palace to the house of the Lord and took their places at the entrance of the New Gate(EV) of the Lord’s house. 11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and all the people, “This man should be sentenced to death(EW) because he has prophesied against this city. You have heard it with your own ears!”(EX)

12 Then Jeremiah said to all the officials(EY) and all the people: “The Lord sent me to prophesy(EZ) against this house and this city all the things you have heard.(FA) 13 Now reform(FB) your ways and your actions and obey(FC) the Lord your God. Then the Lord will relent(FD) and not bring the disaster he has pronounced against you. 14 As for me, I am in your hands;(FE) do with me whatever you think is good and right. 15 Be assured, however, that if you put me to death, you will bring the guilt of innocent blood(FF) on yourselves and on this city and on those who live in it, for in truth the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these words(FG) in your hearing.”

16 Then the officials(FH) and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “This man should not be sentenced to death!(FI) He has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.”

17 Some of the elders of the land stepped forward and said to the entire assembly of people, 18 “Micah(FJ) of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah. He told all the people of Judah, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“‘Zion(FK) will be plowed like a field,
    Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble,(FL)
    the temple hill(FM) a mound overgrown with thickets.’[l](FN)

19 “Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did not Hezekiah(FO) fear the Lord and seek(FP) his favor? And did not the Lord relent,(FQ) so that he did not bring the disaster(FR) he pronounced against them? We are about to bring a terrible disaster(FS) on ourselves!”

20 (Now Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath Jearim(FT) was another man who prophesied in the name of the Lord; he prophesied the same things against this city and this land as Jeremiah did. 21 When King Jehoiakim(FU) and all his officers and officials(FV) heard his words, the king was determined to put him to death.(FW) But Uriah heard of it and fled(FX) in fear to Egypt. 22 King Jehoiakim, however, sent Elnathan(FY) son of Akbor to Egypt, along with some other men. 23 They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with a sword(FZ) and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.)(GA)

24 Furthermore, Ahikam(GB) son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, and so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.

Proclaim Sound Doctrine

But as for you, proclaim the things which are fitting for (A)sound doctrine. (B)Older men are to be [a](C)temperate, dignified, self-controlled, (D)sound (E)in faith, in love, in [b]perseverance.

Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, (F)not malicious gossips nor (G)enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may [c]encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, (H)workers at home, kind, being (I)subject to their own husbands, (J)so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

Likewise urge (K)the young men to be [d]sensible; in all things show yourself to be (L)an example of good deeds, with [e]purity in doctrine, dignified, sound in speech which is beyond reproach, (M)so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.

Urge [f](N)slaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be pleasing, not [g]argumentative, 10 not stealing, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of (O)God our Savior in every respect.

11 For the grace of God has (P)appeared, [h](Q)bringing salvation to all people, 12 [i]instructing us to deny ungodliness and (R)worldly desires and (S)to live sensibly, righteously, and in a godly manner (T)in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and the (U)appearing of the glory of [j](V)our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who (W)gave Himself for us (X)to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to (Y)purify for Himself a (Z)people for His own possession, (AA)eager for good deeds.

15 These things speak and (AB)[k]exhort, and (AC)rebuke with all authority. (AD)No one is to disregard you.

Doing Good for the Sake of the Gospel

You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.(A) Teach the older men(B) to be temperate,(C) worthy of respect, self-controlled,(D) and sound in faith,(E) in love and in endurance.

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers(F) or addicted to much wine,(G) but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women(H) to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled(I) and pure, to be busy at home,(J) to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands,(K) so that no one will malign the word of God.(L)

Similarly, encourage the young men(M) to be self-controlled.(N) In everything set them an example(O) by doing what is good.(P) In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.(Q)

Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything,(R) to try to please them, not to talk back to them, 10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior(S) attractive.(T)

11 For the grace(U) of God has appeared(V) that offers salvation to all people.(W) 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions,(X) and to live self-controlled,(Y) upright and godly lives(Z) in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing(AA) of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,(AB) 14 who gave himself for us(AC) to redeem us from all wickedness(AD) and to purify(AE) for himself a people that are his very own,(AF) eager to do what is good.(AG)

15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.
