Birth and Reign of the Prince of Peace

[a]But there will be no more (A)gloom for her who was in anguish. In earlier times He (B)treated the (C)land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He will make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of the Jordan, Galilee of the [b]Gentiles.

[c](D)The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
(E)You will multiply the nation,
You (F)will [d]increase [e]their joy;
They will rejoice in Your presence
As with the joy [f]of harvest,
As people (G)rejoice when they divide the spoils.
For (H)You will break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
The rod of their (I)oppressor, as [g]at the battle of (J)Midian.
For every boot of the marching warrior in the roar of battle,
And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
For a (K)Child will be born to us, a (L)Son will be given to us;
And the (M)government will [h]rest (N)on His shoulders;
And His name will be called (O)Wonderful Counselor, (P)Mighty God,
Eternal (Q)Father, Prince of (R)Peace.
There will be (S)no end to the increase of His government or of peace
On the (T)throne of David and over [i]his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with (U)justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
(V)The zeal of the Lord of armies will accomplish this.

God’s Anger with Israel’s Arrogance

The Lord sends a [j]message against Jacob,
And it falls on Israel.
And all the people know it,
That is, (W)Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
Asserting in pride and in (X)arrogance of heart:
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
But we will (Y)rebuild with smooth stones;
The sycamores have been cut down,
But we will replace them with cedars.”
11 Therefore the Lord raises superior adversaries against them from (Z)Rezin
And provokes their enemies,
12 The Arameans from the east and the (AA)Philistines from the west;
And they (AB)devour Israel with [k]gaping jaws.
(AC)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away,
And His hand is still stretched out.

13 Yet the people (AD)do not turn back to Him who struck them,
Nor do they (AE)seek the Lord of armies.
14 So the Lord cuts off (AF)head and tail from Israel,
Both palm branch and bulrush (AG)in a single day.
15 The head is (AH)the elder and esteemed man,
And the prophet who teaches (AI)falsehood is the tail.
16 (AJ)For those who guide this people are leading them astray;
And those who are guided by them are [l]confused.
17 Therefore the Lord does (AK)not rejoice over their young men,
(AL)Nor does He have compassion on their [m]orphans or their widows;
For every one of them is (AM)godless and an (AN)evildoer,
And every (AO)mouth is speaking foolishness.
(AP)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away,
And His hand is still stretched out.

18 (AQ)For wickedness burns like a fire;
It consumes briars and thorns;
It also sets the thickets of the forest aflame
And they roll upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the (AR)wrath of the Lord of armies the (AS)land is burned,
And the (AT)people are like fuel for the fire;
No (AU)one spares his brother.
20 [n]They devour what is on the right hand but are still (AV)hungry,
And [o]they eat what is on the left hand, but they are not satisfied;
Each of them eats the (AW)flesh of his own arm.
21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,
(AX)And together they are against Judah.
(AY)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

Assyria Is God’s Instrument

10 Woe to those who (AZ)enact unjust statutes
And to those who constantly record [p]harmful decisions,
So as (BA)to [q]deprive the needy of justice
And rob the poor among My people of their rights,
So (BB)that widows may be their spoil
And that they may plunder the [r]orphans.
Now (BC)what will you do in the (BD)day of punishment,
And in the devastation which will come (BE)from afar?
(BF)To whom will you flee for help?
And where will you leave your wealth?
Nothing remains but to crouch [s]among the (BG)captives
Or fall [t]among those (BH)killed.
(BI)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

Woe to (BJ)Assyria, the (BK)rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hands is (BL)My indignation,
I send it against a (BM)godless nation
And commission it against the (BN)people of My fury
To capture spoils and (BO)to seize plunder,
And to [u]trample them down like (BP)mud in the streets.
Yet it (BQ)does not so intend,
Nor does [v]it plan so in its heart,
But rather it is [w]its purpose to destroy
And to eliminate [x]many nations.
For it says, “Are not my officers [y]all kings?
Is not (BR)Calno like (BS)Carchemish,
Or (BT)Hamath like Arpad,
Or (BU)Samaria like (BV)Damascus?
10 As my hand has reached to the (BW)kingdoms of the idols,
Whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 Shall I not do the same to Jerusalem and her images
Just as I have done to Samaria and (BX)her idols?”

12 So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His (BY)work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say, “I will [z]punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and (BZ)the arrogant pride of his eyes.” 13 For (CA)he has said,

“By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this,
Because I have understanding;
And I (CB)removed the boundaries of the peoples
And plundered their treasures,
And like a powerful man I brought down [aa]their inhabitants,
14 And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a (CC)nest,
And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth;
And there was not one that flapped its wing, opened its beak, or chirped.”

15 Is the (CD)axe to (CE)boast itself over the one who chops with it?
Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it?
That would be like (CF)a [ab]club wielding those who lift it,
Or like (CG)a rod lifting the one who is not wood.
16 Therefore the Lord, the [ac]God of armies, will send a (CH)wasting disease among his (CI)stout warriors;
And under his (CJ)glory a fire will be kindled like a burning flame.
17 And the (CK)Light of Israel will become a fire and [ad]Israel’s (CL)Holy One a flame,
And it will (CM)burn and devour [ae]his thorns and his briars in a single day.
18 And He will (CN)destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitful garden, both soul and body,
And it will be as when a sick person wastes away.
19 And the (CO)rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number
That a child could write them down.

A Remnant Will Return

20 Now on that day the (CP)remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob (CQ)who have escaped, will no longer rely on the one who struck them, but will truly (CR)rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

21 A (CS)remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the (CT)mighty God.
22 For (CU)though your people, Israel, may be like the sand of the sea,
Only a remnant within them will return;
A (CV)destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

23 For a complete destruction, one that is determined, (CW)the Lord [af]God of armies will execute in the midst of the whole land.

24 Therefore this is what the Lord [ag]God of armies says: “My people, you who dwell in (CX)Zion, (CY)do not fear the Assyrian [ah]who (CZ)strikes you with the rod, and lifts up his staff against you the way Egypt did. 25 For in a very (DA)little while (DB)My indignation against you will be ended and My anger will be directed toward their destruction.” 26 The Lord of armies will (DC)wield a whip against him like the defeat of (DD)Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His (DE)staff will be over the sea, and He will lift it up (DF)the way He did in Egypt. 27 So it will be on that day, that [ai]his (DG)burden will be removed from your shoulders, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because (DH)of fatness.

28 He has come against Aiath,
He has passed through (DI)Migron;
At (DJ)Michmash he deposited his (DK)baggage.
29 They have gone through (DL)the pass, saying,
(DM)Geba will be our encampment for the night.”
(DN)Ramah is terrified, and (DO)Gibeah of Saul has fled.
30 Cry aloud with your voice, daughter of (DP)Gallim!
Pay attention, Laishah and [aj]wretched (DQ)Anathoth!
31 Madmenah has fled.
The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge.
32 Yet today he will halt at (DR)Nob;
He (DS)shakes his fist at the mountain of the [ak](DT)daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Behold, the Lord, the [al]God of armies, will lop off the branches with terrifying power;
Those also who are (DU)tall in stature will be cut down,
And those who are lofty will be brought low.
34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an iron axe,
And (DV)Lebanon will fall by the Mighty One.

[a]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom(A) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(B) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

The people walking in darkness(C)
    have seen a great light;(D)
on those living in the land of deep darkness(E)
    a light has dawned.(F)
You have enlarged the nation(G)
    and increased their joy;(H)
they rejoice before you
    as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.(I)
For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,(J)
    you have shattered(K)
the yoke(L) that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,(M)
    the rod of their oppressor.(N)
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
    and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,(O)
    will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,(P)
    to us a son is given,(Q)
    and the government(R) will be on his shoulders.(S)
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor,(T) Mighty God,(U)
    Everlasting(V) Father,(W) Prince of Peace.(X)
Of the greatness of his government(Y) and peace(Z)
    there will be no end.(AA)
He will reign(AB) on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice(AC) and righteousness(AD)
    from that time on and forever.(AE)
The zeal(AF) of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel

The Lord has sent a message(AG) against Jacob;
    it will fall on Israel.
All the people will know it—
    Ephraim(AH) and the inhabitants of Samaria(AI)
who say with pride
    and arrogance(AJ) of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
    but we will rebuild with dressed stone;(AK)
the fig(AL) trees have been felled,
    but we will replace them with cedars.(AM)
11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s(AN) foes against them
    and has spurred their enemies on.
12 Arameans(AO) from the east and Philistines(AP) from the west
    have devoured(AQ) Israel with open mouth.

Yet for all this, his anger(AR) is not turned away,
    his hand is still upraised.(AS)

13 But the people have not returned(AT) to him who struck(AU) them,
    nor have they sought(AV) the Lord Almighty.
14 So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail,
    both palm branch and reed(AW) in a single day;(AX)
15 the elders(AY) and dignitaries(AZ) are the head,
    the prophets(BA) who teach lies(BB) are the tail.
16 Those who guide(BC) this people mislead them,
    and those who are guided are led astray.(BD)
17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,(BE)
    nor will he pity(BF) the fatherless and widows,
for everyone is ungodly(BG) and wicked,(BH)
    every mouth speaks folly.(BI)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
    his hand is still upraised.(BJ)

18 Surely wickedness burns like a fire;(BK)
    it consumes briers and thorns,(BL)
it sets the forest thickets ablaze,(BM)
    so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the wrath(BN) of the Lord Almighty
    the land will be scorched(BO)
and the people will be fuel for the fire;(BP)
    they will not spare one another.(BQ)
20 On the right they will devour,
    but still be hungry;(BR)
on the left they will eat,(BS)
    but not be satisfied.
Each will feed on the flesh of their own offspring[b]:
21     Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh;(BT)
    together they will turn against Judah.(BU)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
    his hand is still upraised.(BV)

10 Woe(BW) to those who make unjust laws,
    to those who issue oppressive decrees,(BX)
to deprive(BY) the poor of their rights
    and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,(BZ)
making widows their prey
    and robbing the fatherless.(CA)
What will you do on the day of reckoning,(CB)
    when disaster(CC) comes from afar?
To whom will you run for help?(CD)
    Where will you leave your riches?
Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives(CE)
    or fall among the slain.(CF)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,(CG)
    his hand is still upraised.

God’s Judgment on Assyria

“Woe(CH) to the Assyrian,(CI) the rod(CJ) of my anger,
    in whose hand is the club(CK) of my wrath!(CL)
I send him against a godless(CM) nation,
    I dispatch(CN) him against a people who anger me,(CO)
to seize loot and snatch plunder,(CP)
    and to trample(CQ) them down like mud in the streets.
But this is not what he intends,(CR)
    this is not what he has in mind;
his purpose is to destroy,
    to put an end to many nations.
‘Are not my commanders(CS) all kings?’ he says.
    ‘Has not Kalno(CT) fared like Carchemish?(CU)
Is not Hamath(CV) like Arpad,(CW)
    and Samaria(CX) like Damascus?(CY)
10 As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols,(CZ)
    kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—
11 shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images
    as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?(DA)’”

12 When the Lord has finished all his work(DB) against Mount Zion(DC) and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria(DD) for the willful pride(DE) of his heart and the haughty look(DF) in his eyes. 13 For he says:

“‘By the strength of my hand(DG) I have done this,(DH)
    and by my wisdom, because I have understanding.
I removed the boundaries of nations,
    I plundered their treasures;(DI)
    like a mighty one I subdued[c] their kings.(DJ)
14 As one reaches into a nest,(DK)
    so my hand reached for the wealth(DL) of the nations;
as people gather abandoned eggs,
    so I gathered all the countries;(DM)
not one flapped a wing,
    or opened its mouth to chirp.(DN)’”

15 Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it,
    or the saw boast against the one who uses it?(DO)
As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up,
    or a club(DP) brandish the one who is not wood!
16 Therefore, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    will send a wasting disease(DQ) upon his sturdy warriors;(DR)
under his pomp(DS) a fire(DT) will be kindled
    like a blazing flame.
17 The Light of Israel will become a fire,(DU)
    their Holy One(DV) a flame;
in a single day it will burn and consume
    his thorns(DW) and his briers.(DX)
18 The splendor of his forests(DY) and fertile fields
    it will completely destroy,(DZ)
    as when a sick person wastes away.
19 And the remaining trees of his forests(EA) will be so few(EB)
    that a child could write them down.

The Remnant of Israel

20 In that day(EC) the remnant of Israel,
    the survivors(ED) of Jacob,
will no longer rely(EE) on him
    who struck them down(EF)
but will truly rely(EG) on the Lord,
    the Holy One of Israel.(EH)
21 A remnant(EI) will return,[d](EJ) a remnant of Jacob
    will return to the Mighty God.(EK)
22 Though your people be like the sand(EL) by the sea, Israel,
    only a remnant will return.(EM)
Destruction has been decreed,(EN)
    overwhelming and righteous.
23 The Lord, the Lord Almighty, will carry out
    the destruction decreed(EO) upon the whole land.(EP)

24 Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says:

“My people who live in Zion,(EQ)
    do not be afraid(ER) of the Assyrians,
who beat(ES) you with a rod(ET)
    and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.
25 Very soon(EU) my anger against you will end
    and my wrath(EV) will be directed to their destruction.(EW)

26 The Lord Almighty will lash(EX) them with a whip,
    as when he struck down Midian(EY) at the rock of Oreb;
and he will raise his staff(EZ) over the waters,(FA)
    as he did in Egypt.
27 In that day(FB) their burden(FC) will be lifted from your shoulders,
    their yoke(FD) from your neck;(FE)
the yoke(FF) will be broken
    because you have grown so fat.[e]

28 They enter Aiath;
    they pass through Migron;(FG)
    they store supplies(FH) at Mikmash.(FI)
29 They go over the pass, and say,
    “We will camp overnight at Geba.(FJ)
Ramah(FK) trembles;
    Gibeah(FL) of Saul flees.(FM)
30 Cry out, Daughter Gallim!(FN)
    Listen, Laishah!
    Poor Anathoth!(FO)
31 Madmenah is in flight;
    the people of Gebim take cover.
32 This day they will halt at Nob;(FP)
    they will shake their fist(FQ)
at the mount of Daughter Zion,(FR)
    at the hill of Jerusalem.

33 See, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    will lop off(FS) the boughs with great power.
The lofty trees will be felled,(FT)
    the tall(FU) ones will be brought low.(FV)
34 He will cut down(FW) the forest thickets with an ax;
    Lebanon(FX) will fall before the Mighty One.(FY)

Paul’s Stewardship

For this reason I, Paul, (A)the prisoner of (B)Christ Jesus (C)for the sake of you (D)Gentiles— if indeed you have heard of the (E)administration of God’s grace which was given to me for you; (F)that (G)by revelation there was (H)made known to me (I)the mystery, (J)as I wrote before briefly. [a]By referring to this, when you read you can understand (K)my insight [b]into the (L)mystery of Christ, which in other generations was not made known to [c]mankind, as it has now been revealed to His holy (M)apostles and prophets [d]in the Spirit; to be specific, that the Gentiles are (N)fellow heirs and (O)fellow members of the body, and (P)fellow partakers of the promise in (Q)Christ Jesus through the gospel, (R)of which I was made a (S)minister, according to the gift of (T)God’s grace which was given to me (U)according to the working of His power. To me, (V)the very least of all [e]saints, this grace was given, to (W)preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable (X)riches of Christ, and to [f]enlighten all people as to what the plan of the (Y)mystery is which for ages has been (Z)hidden in God, (AA)who created all things; 10 so that the multifaceted (AB)wisdom of God might now be (AC)made known through the church to the (AD)rulers and the authorities in (AE)the heavenly places. 11 This was in (AF)accordance with the [g]eternal purpose which He [h]carried out in (AG)Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and [i](AH)confident (AI)access through faith [j]in Him. 13 Therefore I ask [k]you not (AJ)to become discouraged about my tribulations (AK)in your behalf, [l]since they are your glory.

14 For this reason I (AL)bend my knees before the Father, 15 from whom [m]every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, 16 that He would grant you, according to (AM)the riches of His glory, to be (AN)strengthened with power through His Spirit in (AO)the inner [n]self, 17 so that (AP)Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being (AQ)rooted and (AR)grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with (AS)all the [o]saints what is (AT)the width and length and height and depth, 19 and to know (AU)the love of Christ which (AV)surpasses knowledge, that you may be (AW)filled to all the (AX)fullness of God.

20 (AY)Now to Him who is (AZ)able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, (BA)according to the power that works within us, 21 (BB)to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations [p]forever and ever. Amen.

God’s Marvelous Plan for the Gentiles

For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner(A) of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—

Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me(B) for you, that is, the mystery(C) made known to me by revelation,(D) as I have already written briefly. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight(E) into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.(F) This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs(G) together with Israel, members together of one body,(H) and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.(I)

I became a servant of this gospel(J) by the gift of God’s grace given me(K) through the working of his power.(L) Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people,(M) this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles(N) the boundless riches of Christ,(O) and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery,(P) which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God(Q) should be made known(R) to the rulers and authorities(S) in the heavenly realms,(T) 11 according to his eternal purpose(U) that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God(V) with freedom and confidence.(W) 13 I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

A Prayer for the Ephesians

14 For this reason I kneel(X) before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches(Y) he may strengthen you with power(Z) through his Spirit in your inner being,(AA) 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts(AB) through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted(AC) and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people,(AD) to grasp how wide and long and high and deep(AE) is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge(AF)—that you may be filled(AG) to the measure of all the fullness of God.(AH)

20 Now to him who is able(AI) to do immeasurably more than all we ask(AJ) or imagine, according to his power(AK) that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.(AL)
