Isaac and Rebekah

24 Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. And the Lord (A)had blessed Abraham in all things. And Abraham said to his servant, (B)the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he had, (C)“Put your hand under my thigh, that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and God of the earth, that (D)you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, (E)but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” The servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?” Abraham said to him, “See to it that you do not take my son back there. The Lord, the God of heaven, (F)who took me from my father's house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and swore to me, (G)‘To your offspring I will give this land’, (H)he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then (I)you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back there.” So the servant (J)put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning this matter.

10 Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master; and he arose and went to (K)Mesopotamia[a] to the city of Nahor. 11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time when (L)women go out to draw water. 12 And he said, “O Lord, (M)God of my master Abraham, (N)please grant me success today and show steadfast love to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, (O)I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Let the young woman to whom I shall say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink’, and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. (P)By this[b] I shall know that you have shown steadfast love to my master.”

15 Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of (Q)Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her water jar on her shoulder. 16 The young woman (R)was very attractive in appearance, a maiden[c] whom no man had known. She went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up. 17 Then the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.” 18 She said, “Drink, my lord.” And she quickly let down her jar upon her hand and gave him a drink. 19 When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water, and she drew for all his camels. 21 The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the Lord had prospered his journey or not.

22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half shekel,[d] and two bracelets for her arms weighing ten gold shekels, 23 and said, “Please tell me whose daughter you are. Is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?” 24 She said to him, (S)“I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 She added, “We have plenty of both straw and fodder, and room to spend the night.” 26 (T)The man bowed his head and worshipped the Lord 27 and said, “Blessed be the Lord, (U)the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken (V)his steadfast love and his faithfulness towards my master. As for me, the Lord (W)has led me in the way to the house of my master's kinsmen.” 28 Then the young woman ran and told her mother's household about these things.

29 Rebekah had a brother whose name was (X)Laban. Laban ran out towards the man, to the spring. 30 As soon as he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister's arms, and heard the words of Rebekah his sister, “Thus the man spoke to me”, he went to the man. And behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 He said, “Come in, (Y)O blessed of the Lord. Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.” 32 So the man came to the house and unharnessed the camels, and gave (Z)straw and fodder to the camels, and there was (AA)water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Then food was set before him to eat. But he said, “I will not eat until I have said what I have to say.” He said, “Speak on.”

34 So he said, “I am Abraham's servant. 35 The Lord (AB)has greatly blessed my master, and he has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, camels and donkeys. 36 And Sarah my master's wife (AC)bore a son to my master when she was old, and (AD)to him he has given all that he has. 37 (AE)My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell, 38 but you shall go to my father's house and to my clan and take a wife for my son.’ 39 I said to my master, ‘Perhaps the woman will not follow me.’ 40 But he said to me, ‘The Lord, (AF)before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and (AG)prosper your way. You shall take a wife for my son from my clan and from my father's house. 41 Then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my clan. And if they will not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.’

42 “I came today to the spring and said, (AH)‘O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if now you (AI)are prospering the way that I go, 43 behold, I am standing (AJ)by the spring of water. Let the virgin who comes out to draw water, to whom I shall say, “Please give me a little water from your jar to drink”, 44 (AK)and who will say to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also”, let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master's son.’

45 “Before I had finished (AL)speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her water jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ 46 She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also.’ So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also. 47 Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ (AM)So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms. 48 (AN)Then I bowed my head and worshipped the Lord and blessed the Lord, (AO)the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way[e] to take (AP)the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son. 49 Now then, if you are going to (AQ)show steadfast love and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.”

50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “The thing has come from the Lord; we cannot (AR)speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you; take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master's son, (AS)as the Lord has spoken.”

52 When Abraham's servant heard their words, (AT)he bowed himself to the earth before the Lord. 53 And the servant brought out jewellery of silver and of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave to her brother and to her mother costly ornaments. 54 And he and the men who were with him ate and drank, and they spent the night there. When they arose in the morning, he said, (AU)“Send me away to my master.” 55 Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young woman remain with us a while, at least ten days; after that she may go.” 56 But he said to them, “Do not delay me, since the Lord has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master.” 57 They said, “Let us call the young woman and ask her.” 58 And they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.” 59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister and (AV)her nurse, and Abraham's servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,

“Our sister, may you (AW)become
    thousands of ten thousands,
and (AX)may your offspring possess
the gate of those who hate him!”[f]

61 Then Rebekah and her young women arose and rode on the camels and followed the man. Thus the servant took Rebekah and went his way.

62 Now Isaac had returned from (AY)Beer-lahai-roi and was dwelling in the Negeb. 63 And Isaac went out (AZ)to meditate in the field towards evening. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, there were camels coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel 65 and said to the servant, “Who is that man, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was (BA)comforted after his mother's (BB)death.

Abraham's Death and His Descendants

25 Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. (BC)She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. (BD)Abraham gave all he had to Isaac. But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he (BE)sent them away from his son Isaac, eastwards (BF)to the east country.

These are the days of the years of Abraham's life, 175 years. Abraham (BG)breathed his last and (BH)died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. Isaac and Ishmael (BI)his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre, 10 the field (BJ)that Abraham purchased from the Hittites. (BK)There Abraham was buried, with Sarah his wife. 11 After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac his son. And Isaac settled at (BL)Beer-lahai-roi.

12 These are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, (BM)whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's servant, bore to Abraham. 13 (BN)These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, named in the order of their birth: (BO)Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael; and (BP)Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, (BQ)Tema, (BR)Jetur, (BS)Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages and by their encampments, (BT)twelve princes according to their tribes. 17 (These are the years of the life of Ishmael: 137 years. He (BU)breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.) 18 (BV)They settled from Havilah to (BW)Shur, which is opposite Egypt in the direction of Assyria. He settled[g] over against all his kinsmen.

The Birth of Esau and Jacob

19 These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: (BX)Abraham fathered Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, (BY)the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of (BZ)Paddan-aram, (CA)the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife. 21 And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And (CB)the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?”[h] So she went (CC)to enquire of the Lord. 23 And the Lord said to her,

(CD)“Two nations are in your womb,
    and two peoples from within you[i] shall be divided;
(CE)the one shall be stronger than the other,
(CF)the older shall serve the younger.”

24 When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 The first came out red, (CG)all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. 26 Afterwards his brother came out with (CH)his hand holding Esau's heel, so (CI)his name was called Jacob.[j] Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.

27 When the boys grew up, Esau was (CJ)a skilful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, (CK)dwelling in tents. 28 Isaac loved Esau because (CL)he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Esau Sells His Birthright

29 Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.[k]) 31 Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” 32 Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” 33 Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and (CM)sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

God's Promise to Isaac

26 Now there was a famine in the land, besides (CN)the former famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar to (CO)Abimelech king of the (CP)Philistines. And the Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell (CQ)in the land of which I shall tell you. (CR)Sojourn in this land, and (CS)I will be with you and will bless you, for (CT)to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish (CU)the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. (CV)I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And (CW)in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because (CX)Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”

Isaac and Abimelech

So Isaac settled in Gerar. When the men of the place asked him about his wife, (CY)he said, “She is my sister”, for (CZ)he feared to say, “My wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah”, because (DA)she was attractive in appearance. When he had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac laughing with[l] Rebekah his wife. So Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, she is your wife. How then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I thought, ‘Lest I die because of her.’” 10 Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and (DB)you would have brought guilt upon us.” 11 So Abimelech warned all the people, saying, “Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”

12 And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord (DC)blessed him, 13 and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy. 14 He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants, so that the Philistines (DD)envied him. 15 (Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells (DE)that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.) 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.”

17 So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled there. 18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines had stopped after the death of Abraham. And (DF)he gave them the names that his father had given them. 19 But when Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found there a well of spring water, 20 the herdsmen of Gerar (DG)quarrelled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek,[m] because they contended with him. 21 Then they dug another well, and they quarrelled over that also, so he called its name Sitnah.[n] 22 And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth,[o] saying, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”

23 From there he went up to Beersheba. 24 And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, (DH)“I am the God of Abraham your father. (DI)Fear not, for (DJ)I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.” 25 So he (DK)built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac's servants dug a well.

26 When Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his adviser and (DL)Phicol the commander of his army, 27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and (DM)have sent me away from you?” 28 They said, “We see plainly that the Lord has been with you. So we said, let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. (DN)You are now the blessed of the Lord.” 30 So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 In the morning they rose early and (DO)exchanged oaths. And Isaac sent them on their way, and they departed from him in peace. 32 That same day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well that they had dug and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 He called it Shibah;[p] therefore the name of the city is (DP)Beersheba to this day.

34 When Esau was forty years old, he took (DQ)Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite to be his wife, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite, 35 and (DR)they made life bitter[q] for Isaac and Rebekah.

Isaac Blesses Jacob

27 When Isaac was old and (DS)his eyes were dim so that he could not see, he called Esau his older son and said to him, “My son”; and he answered, “Here I am.” He said, “Behold, I am old; I do not know the day of my death. (DT)Now then, take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me, and prepare for me delicious food, such as I love, and bring it to me so that I may eat, that my soul (DU)may bless you before I die.”

Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game and bring it, Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, ‘Bring me game and prepare for me delicious food, that I may eat it and bless you before the Lord before I die.’ Now therefore, my son, (DV)obey my voice as I command you. Go to the flock and bring me two good young goats, so that I may prepare from them delicious food for your father, such as he loves. 10 And you shall bring it to your father to eat, (DW)so that he may bless you before he dies.” 11 But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Behold, (DX)my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. 12 Perhaps my father (DY)will feel me, and I shall seem to be mocking him and bring (DZ)a curse upon myself and not a blessing.” 13 His mother said to him, (EA)“Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, bring them to me.”

14 So he went and took them and brought them to his mother, and his mother prepared delicious food, such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the (EB)best garments of Esau her older son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. 16 And the skins of the young goats she put on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 And she put the delicious food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.

18 So he went in to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” 19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me; now sit up and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.” 20 But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” He answered, “Because the Lord your God granted me success.” 21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I (EC)may feel you, my son, to know whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, who felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 And he did not recognize him, because (ED)his hands were hairy like his brother Esau's hands. (EE)So he blessed him. 24 He said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He answered, “I am.” 25 Then he said, “Bring it near to me, (EF)that I may eat of my son's game and bless you.” So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.

26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near and kiss me, my son.” 27 So he came near and kissed him. And Isaac smelled the smell of his garments (EG)and blessed him and said,

“See, (EH)the smell of my son
is as the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed!
28 May God give you of (EI)the dew of heaven
and of the fatness of the earth
and (EJ)plenty of grain and wine.
29 Let peoples serve you,
and nations (EK)bow down to you.
(EL)Be lord over your brothers,
and may your mother's sons bow down to you.
(EM)Cursed be everyone who curses you,
and blessed be everyone who blesses you!”

30 As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting. 31 He also prepared delicious food and brought it to his father. And he said to his father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son's game, that you may bless me.” 32 His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” He answered, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.” 33 Then Isaac trembled very violently and said, “Who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate it all before you came, and I have blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.” 34 As soon as Esau heard the words of his father, (EN)he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, O my father!” 35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully, and he has taken away your blessing.” 36 Esau said, (EO)“Is he not rightly named Jacob?[r] For he has cheated me these two times. (EP)He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” Then he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?” 37 Isaac answered and said to Esau, “Behold, (EQ)I have made him lord over you, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants, and (ER)with grain and wine I have sustained him. What then can I do for you, my son?” 38 Esau said to his father, “Have you but one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father.” And (ES)Esau lifted up his voice and wept.

39 Then Isaac his father answered and said to him:

“Behold, (ET)away from[s] the fatness of the earth shall your dwelling be,
and away from[t] the dew of heaven on high.
40 By your sword you shall live,
    and you (EU)shall serve your brother;
but when you grow restless
(EV)you shall break his yoke from your neck.”

41 Now Esau (EW)hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, (EX)“The days of mourning for my father are approaching; (EY)then I will kill my brother Jacob.” 42 But the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban my brother in Haran 44 and stay with him a while, until your brother's fury turns away— 45 until your brother's anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereft of you both in one day?”

46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, (EZ)“I loathe my life because of the Hittite women.[u] (FA)If Jacob marries one of the Hittite women like these, one of the women of the land, what good will my life be to me?”

Isaac and Rebekah

24 Abraham was now very old,(A) and the Lord had blessed(B) him in every way.(C) He said to the senior servant(D) in his household, the one in charge of all that he had,(E) “Put your hand under my thigh.(F) I want you to swear(G) by the Lord, the God of heaven(H) and the God of earth,(I) that you will not get a wife for my son(J) from the daughters of the Canaanites,(K) among whom I am living,(L) but will go to my country and my own relatives(M) and get a wife for my son Isaac.(N)

The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land?(O) Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?(P)

“Make sure that you do not take my son back there,”(Q) Abraham said. “The Lord, the God of heaven,(R) who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land(S) and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring[a](T) I will give this land’(U)—he will send his angel before you(V) so that you can get a wife for my son from there. If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath(W) of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”(X) So the servant put his hand under the thigh(Y) of his master(Z) Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.

10 Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels(AA) loaded with all kinds of good things(AB) from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim[b](AC) and made his way to the town of Nahor.(AD) 11 He had the camels kneel down near the well(AE) outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.(AF)

12 Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham,(AG) make me successful(AH) today, and show kindness(AI) to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.(AJ) 14 May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink,(AK) and I’ll water your camels too’(AL)—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac.(AM) By this I will know(AN) that you have shown kindness to my master.”

15 Before he had finished praying,(AO) Rebekah(AP) came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel(AQ) son of Milkah,(AR) who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.(AS) 16 The woman was very beautiful,(AT) a virgin;(AU) no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.

17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.”(AV)

18 “Drink,(AW) my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.

19 After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels(AX) too,(AY) until they have had enough to drink.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels.(AZ) 21 Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.(BA)

22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring(BB) weighing a beka[c] and two gold bracelets(BC) weighing ten shekels.[d] 23 Then he asked, “Whose daughter are you?(BD) Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?(BE)

24 She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.(BF) 25 And she added, “We have plenty of straw and fodder,(BG) as well as room for you to spend the night.”

26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the Lord,(BH) 27 saying, “Praise be to the Lord,(BI) the God of my master Abraham,(BJ) who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness(BK) to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey(BL) to the house of my master’s relatives.”(BM)

28 The young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things.(BN) 29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban,(BO) and he hurried out to the man at the spring. 30 As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms,(BP) and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring. 31 “Come, you who are blessed by the Lord,”(BQ) he said. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”

32 So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder(BR) were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet.(BS) 33 Then food was set before him, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say.”

“Then tell us,” Laban said.

34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.(BT) 35 The Lord has blessed(BU) my master abundantly,(BV) and he has become wealthy.(BW) He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.(BX) 36 My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age,(BY) and he has given him everything he owns.(BZ) 37 And my master made me swear an oath,(CA) and said, ‘You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,(CB) 38 but go to my father’s family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.’(CC)

39 “Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’(CD)

40 “He replied, ‘The Lord, before whom I have walked faithfully,(CE) will send his angel with you(CF) and make your journey a success,(CG) so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father’s family.(CH) 41 You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you—then you will be released from my oath.’(CI)

42 “When I came to the spring today, I said, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success(CJ) to the journey on which I have come. 43 See, I am standing beside this spring.(CK) If a young woman(CL) comes out to draw water and I say to her, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,”(CM) 44 and if she says to me, “Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels too,” let her be the one the Lord has chosen for my master’s son.’(CN)

45 “Before I finished praying in my heart,(CO) Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder.(CP) She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’(CQ)

46 “She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.’(CR) So I drank, and she watered the camels also.(CS)

47 “I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’(CT)

“She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel(CU) son of Nahor, whom Milkah bore to him.’(CV)

“Then I put the ring in her nose(CW) and the bracelets on her arms,(CX) 48 and I bowed down and worshiped the Lord.(CY) I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham,(CZ) who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.(DA) 49 Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness(DB) to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.”

50 Laban and Bethuel(DC) answered, “This is from the Lord;(DD) we can say nothing to you one way or the other.(DE) 51 Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.(DF)

52 When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the Lord.(DG) 53 Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing(DH) and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts(DI) to her brother and to her mother. 54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there.

When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way(DJ) to my master.”

55 But her brother and her mother replied, “Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so;(DK) then you[e] may go.”

56 But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the Lord has granted success(DL) to my journey. Send me on my way(DM) so I may go to my master.”

57 Then they said, “Let’s call the young woman and ask her about it.”(DN) 58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”

“I will go,”(DO) she said.

59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way,(DP) along with her nurse(DQ) and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed(DR) Rebekah and said to her,

“Our sister, may you increase
    to thousands upon thousands;(DS)
may your offspring possess
    the cities of their enemies.”(DT)

61 Then Rebekah and her attendants(DU) got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.

62 Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi,(DV) for he was living in the Negev.(DW) 63 He went out to the field one evening to meditate,[f](DX) and as he looked up,(DY) he saw camels approaching. 64 Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel(DZ) 65 and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”

“He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil(EA) and covered herself.

66 Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. 67 Isaac brought her into the tent(EB) of his mother Sarah,(EC) and he married Rebekah.(ED) So she became his wife, and he loved her;(EE) and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.(EF)

The Death of Abraham(EG)

25 Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah. She bore him Zimran,(EH) Jokshan, Medan, Midian,(EI) Ishbak and Shuah.(EJ) Jokshan was the father of Sheba(EK) and Dedan;(EL) the descendants of Dedan were the Ashurites, the Letushites and the Leummites. The sons of Midian were Ephah,(EM) Epher, Hanok, Abida and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.

Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac.(EN) But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines(EO) and sent them away from his son Isaac(EP) to the land of the east.(EQ)

Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years.(ER) Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age,(ES) an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people.(ET) His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him(EU) in the cave of Machpelah(EV) near Mamre,(EW) in the field of Ephron(EX) son of Zohar the Hittite,(EY) 10 the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites.[g](EZ) There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. 11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac,(FA) who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.(FB)

Ishmael’s Sons(FC)

12 This is the account(FD) of the family line of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Sarah’s slave, Hagar(FE) the Egyptian, bore to Abraham.(FF)

13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth(FG) the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar,(FH) Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah,(FI) Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema,(FJ) Jetur,(FK) Naphish and Kedemah. 16 These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers(FL) according to their settlements and camps.(FM) 17 Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people.(FN) 18 His descendants(FO) settled in the area from Havilah to Shur,(FP) near the eastern border of Egypt, as you go toward Ashur. And they lived in hostility toward[h] all the tribes related to them.(FQ)

Jacob and Esau

19 This is the account(FR) of the family line of Abraham’s son Isaac.

Abraham became the father of Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old(FS) when he married Rebekah(FT) daughter of Bethuel(FU) the Aramean from Paddan Aram[i](FV) and sister of Laban(FW) the Aramean.(FX)

21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless.(FY) The Lord answered his prayer,(FZ) and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.(GA)

23 The Lord said to her,

“Two nations(GB) are in your womb,
    and two peoples from within you will be separated;
one people will be stronger than the other,
and the older will serve the younger.(GC)

24 When the time came for her to give birth,(GD) there were twin boys in her womb.(GE) 25 The first to come out was red,(GF) and his whole body was like a hairy garment;(GG) so they named him Esau.[j](GH) 26 After this, his brother came out,(GI) with his hand grasping Esau’s heel;(GJ) so he was named Jacob.[k](GK) Isaac was sixty years old(GL) when Rebekah gave birth to them.

27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter,(GM) a man of the open country,(GN) while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game,(GO) loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.(GP)

29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew,(GQ) Esau came in from the open country,(GR) famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew!(GS) I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.[l])(GT)

31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.(GU)

32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”

33 But Jacob said, “Swear(GV) to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright(GW) to Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew.(GX) He ate and drank, and then got up and left.

So Esau despised his birthright.

Isaac and Abimelek(GY)

26 Now there was a famine in the land(GZ)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(HA) in Gerar.(HB) The Lord appeared(HC) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(HD) live in the land where I tell you to live.(HE) Stay in this land for a while,(HF) and I will be with you(HG) and will bless you.(HH) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(HI) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(HJ) I will make your descendants(HK) as numerous as the stars in the sky(HL) and will give them all these lands,(HM) and through your offspring[m] all nations on earth will be blessed,[n](HN) because Abraham obeyed me(HO) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(HP) and my instructions.(HQ) So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(HR)

When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(HS)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”

When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(HT) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(HU)

Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”

10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(HV) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”

11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(HW) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(HX)

12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(HY) because the Lord blessed him.(HZ) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(IA) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(IB) that the Philistines envied him.(IC) 15 So all the wells(ID) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(IE) filling them with earth.

16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(IF) you have become too powerful for us.(IG)

17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(IH) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(II) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(IJ) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(IK) So he named the well Esek,[o] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(IL) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[p] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[q](IM) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(IN) and we will flourish(IO) in the land.”

23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(IP) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(IQ) Do not be afraid,(IR) for I am with you;(IS) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(IT) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(IU)

25 Isaac built an altar(IV) there and called on the name of the Lord.(IW) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(IX)

26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(IY) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(IZ)

28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(JA) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(JB) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(JC) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(JD)

30 Isaac then made a feast(JE) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(JF) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.

32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(JG) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[r] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[s](JH)

Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing

34 When Esau was forty years old,(JI) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(JJ) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(JK)

27 When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see,(JL) he called for Esau his older son(JM) and said to him, “My son.”

“Here I am,” he answered.

Isaac said, “I am now an old man and don’t know the day of my death.(JN) Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country(JO) to hunt some wild game for me. Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like(JP) and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing(JQ) before I die.”(JR)

Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country(JS) to hunt game and bring it back, Rebekah said to her son Jacob,(JT) “Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, ‘Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.’(JU) Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:(JV) Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,(JW) so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.(JX) 10 Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing(JY) before he dies.”

11 Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But my brother Esau is a hairy man(JZ) while I have smooth skin. 12 What if my father touches me?(KA) I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse(KB) on myself rather than a blessing.”

13 His mother said to him, “My son, let the curse fall on me.(KC) Just do what I say;(KD) go and get them for me.”

14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.(KE) 15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes(KF) of Esau her older son,(KG) which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.(KH) 17 Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

18 He went to his father and said, “My father.”

“Yes, my son,” he answered. “Who is it?”(KI)

19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn.(KJ) I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game,(KK) so that you may give me your blessing.”(KL)

20 Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”

“The Lord your God gave me success,(KM)” he replied.

21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you,(KN) my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”

22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac,(KO) who touched(KP) him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau;(KQ) so he proceeded to bless him. 24 “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked.

“I am,” he replied.

25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”(KR)

Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”

27 So he went to him and kissed(KS) him(KT). When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes,(KU) he blessed him and said,

“Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
    that the Lord has blessed.(KV)
28 May God give you heaven’s dew(KW)
    and earth’s richness(KX)
an abundance of grain(KY) and new wine.(KZ)
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.(LA)
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.(LB)
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.(LC)

30 After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, “My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”(LD)

32 His father Isaac asked him, “Who are you?”(LE)

“I am your son,” he answered, “your firstborn, Esau.(LF)

33 Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me?(LG) I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!(LH)

34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry(LI) and said to his father, “Bless(LJ) me—me too, my father!”

35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully(LK) and took your blessing.”(LL)

36 Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob[t]?(LM) This is the second time he has taken advantage of(LN) me: He took my birthright,(LO) and now he’s taken my blessing!”(LP) Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?”

37 Isaac answered Esau, “I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine.(LQ) So what can I possibly do for you, my son?”

38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.(LR)

39 His father Isaac answered him,(LS)

“Your dwelling will be
    away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew(LT) of heaven above.(LU)
40 You will live by the sword
and you will serve(LV) your brother.(LW)
But when you grow restless,
    you will throw his yoke
    from off your neck.(LX)

41 Esau held a grudge(LY) against Jacob(LZ) because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning(MA) for my father are near; then I will kill(MB) my brother Jacob.”(MC)

42 When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau(MD) had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.(ME) 43 Now then, my son, do what I say:(MF) Flee at once to my brother Laban(MG) in Harran.(MH) 44 Stay with him for a while(MI) until your brother’s fury subsides. 45 When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him,(MJ) I’ll send word for you to come back from there.(MK) Why should I lose both of you in one day?”

46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with living because of these Hittite(ML) women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land,(MM) from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living.”(MN)
