neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. Instead, springs[a] came up from the ground and watered all the land. Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.

Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he placed the man he had made. The Lord God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground—trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 A river flowed from the land of Eden, watering the garden and then dividing into four branches. 11 The first branch, called the Pishon, flowed around the entire land of Havilah, where gold is found. 12 The gold of that land is exceptionally pure; aromatic resin and onyx stone are also found there. 13 The second branch, called the Gihon, flowed around the entire land of Cush. 14 The third branch, called the Tigris, flowed east of the land of Asshur. The fourth branch is called the Euphrates.

15 The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. 16 But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— 17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” 19 So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man[b] to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. 20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.

21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs[c] and closed up the opening. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.

23 “At last!” the man exclaimed.

“This one is bone from my bone,
    and flesh from my flesh!
She will be called ‘woman,’
because she was taken from ‘man.’”

24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.

25 Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

The Man and Woman Sin

The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

“Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’”

“You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

  3. 2:21 Or took a part of the man’s side.

Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up,(A) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth(B) and there was no one to work the ground, but streams[b] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed(C) a man[c](D) from the dust(E) of the ground(F) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(G) of life,(H) and the man became a living being.(I)

Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(J) and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(K) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(L) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(M)

10 A river(N) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(O) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(P) where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[d](Q) and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[e] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;(R) it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(S)

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(T) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(U) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(V) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(W)

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(X)

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(Y) and all the birds in the sky.(Z) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(AA) each living creature,(AB) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[f] no suitable helper(AC) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(AD) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[g] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h](AE) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;(AF)
she shall be called(AG) ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.(AH)

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united(AI) to his wife, and they become one flesh.(AJ)

25 Adam and his wife were both naked,(AK) and they felt no shame.

The Fall

Now the serpent(AL) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?(AM)

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,(AN) but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”(AO)

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.(AP) “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,(AQ) knowing good and evil.”

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable(AR) for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,(AS) who was with her, and he ate it.(AT) Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;(AU) so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.(AV)
