13 Og Abram fór frá Egyptalandi með konu sína og allt, sem hann átti, og Lot fór með honum, til Suðurlandsins.
2 Abram var stórauðugur að kvikfé, silfri og gulli.
3 Og hann flutti sig smátt og smátt sunnan að allt til Betel, til þess staðar, er tjald hans hafði áður verið, milli Betel og Aí,

10 Þá hóf Lot upp augu sín og sá, að allt Jórdansléttlendið, allt til Sóar, var vatnsríkt land, eins og aldingarður Drottins, eins og Egyptaland. (Þetta var áður en Drottinn eyddi Sódómu og Gómorru.)
11 Og Lot kaus sér allt Jórdansléttlendið, og Lot flutti sig austur á við, og þannig skildu þeir.
12 Abram bjó í Kanaanlandi, en Lot bjó í borgunum á sléttlendinu og færði tjöld sín allt til Sódómu.
13 En mennirnir í Sódómu voru vondir og stórsyndarar fyrir Drottni.
14 Drottinn sagði við Abram, eftir að Lot hafði skilið við hann: "Hef þú upp augu þín, og litast um frá þeim stað, sem þú ert á, til norðurs, suðurs, austurs og vesturs.
15 Því að allt landið, sem þú sér, mun ég gefa þér og niðjum þínum ævinlega.
16 Og ég mun gjöra niðja þína sem duft jarðar, svo að geti nokkur talið duft jarðarinnar, þá skulu einnig niðjar þínir verða taldir.
17 Tak þig nú upp og far þú um landið þvert og endilangt, því að þér mun ég gefa það."

3 Allir þessir hittust á Siddímsvöllum. (Þar er nú Saltisjór.)
4 Í tólf ár höfðu þeir verið lýðskyldir Kedorlaómer, en á hinu þrettánda ári höfðu þeir gjört uppreisn.
5 Og á fjórtánda ári kom Kedorlaómer og þeir konungar, sem með honum voru, og sigruðu Refaítana í Astarot Karnaím, Súsítana í Ham, Emítana á Kírjataímsvöllum
6 og Hórítana á fjalli þeirra Seír allt til El-Paran, sem er við eyðimörkina.
7 Síðan sneru þeir við og komu til En-Mispat (það er Kades), og fóru herskildi yfir land Amalekíta og sömuleiðis Amoríta, sem bjuggu í Hasason Tamar.
8 Þá lögðu þeir af stað, konungurinn í Sódómu, konungurinn í Gómorru, konungurinn í Adma, konungurinn í Sebóím og konungurinn í Bela (það er Sóar), og þeir fylktu liði sínu móti þeim á Síddímsvöllum,
9 móti Kedorlaómer, konungi í Elam, Tídeal, konungi í Gojím, Amrafel, konungi í Sínear, og Aríok, konungi í Ellasar, fjórir konungar móti fimm.
10 En á Siddímsvöllum var hver jarðbiksgröfin við aðra. Og konungarnir í Sódómu og Gómorru lögðu á flótta og féllu ofan í þær, en þeir, sem af komust, flýðu til fjalla.
11 Þá tóku hinir alla fjárhluti, sem voru í Sódómu og Gómorru, og öll matvæli og fóru burt.
12 Þeir tóku og Lot, bróðurson Abrams, og fjárhluti hans og fóru burt, en hann átti heima í Sódómu.
13 Þá kom maður af flóttanum og sagði Hebreanum Abram tíðindin, en hann bjó þá í lundi Amorítans Mamre, bróður Eskols og Aners, og þeir voru bandamenn Abrams.

16 Sneri hann því næst heimleiðis með alla fjárhlutina og bróðurson sinn Lot, og fjárhluti hans hafði hann einnig heim með sér, sömuleiðis konurnar og fólkið.
17 En er hann hafði unnið sigur á Kedorlaómer konungi og þeim konungum, sem með honum voru, og hélt heimleiðis, fór konungurinn í Sódómu til fundar við hann í Savedal. (Þar heitir nú Kóngsdalur.)
18 Og Melkísedek konungur í Salem kom með brauð og vín, en hann var prestur Hins Hæsta Guðs.
19 Og hann blessaði Abram og sagði: "Blessaður sé Abram af Hinum Hæsta Guði, skapara himins og jarðar!
20 Og lofaður sé Hinn Hæsti Guð, sem gaf óvini þína þér í hendur!" Og Abram gaf honum tíund af öllu.
21 Konungurinn í Sódómu sagði við Abram: "Gef mér mennina, en tak þú fjárhlutina."
22 Þá mælti Abram við konunginn í Sódómu: "Ég upplyfti höndum mínum til Drottins, Hins Hæsta Guðs, skapara himins og jarðar:
23 Ég tek hvorki þráð né skóþveng, né nokkuð af öllu sem þér tilheyrir, svo að þú skulir ekki segja: ,Ég hefi gjört Abram ríkan.`
24 Ekkert handa mér! Aðeins það, sem sveinarnir hafa neytt, og hlut þeirra manna, sem með mér fóru, Aners, Eskols og Mamre. Þeir mega taka sinn hlut."
15 Eftir þessa atburði kom orð Drottins til Abrams í sýn: "Óttast þú ekki, Abram, ég er þinn skjöldur, laun þín munu mjög mikil verða."
2 Og Abram mælti: "Drottinn Guð, hvað ætlar þú að gefa mér? Ég fer héðan barnlaus, og Elíeser frá Damaskus verður erfingi húss míns."
3 Og Abram mælti: "Sjá, mér hefir þú ekkert afkvæmi gefið, og húskarl minn mun erfa mig."
4 Og sjá, orð Drottins kom til hans: "Ekki skal hann erfa þig, heldur sá, sem af þér mun getinn verða, hann mun erfa þig."
5 Og hann leiddi hann út og mælti: "Lít þú upp til himins og tel þú stjörnurnar, ef þú getur talið þær." Og hann sagði við hann: "Svo margir skulu niðjar þínir verða."
6 Og Abram trúði Drottni, og hann reiknaði honum það til réttlætis.
7 Þá sagði hann við hann: "Ég er Drottinn, sem leiddi þig út frá Úr í Kaldeu til þess að gefa þér þetta land til eignar."
8 Og Abram mælti: "Drottinn Guð, hvað skal ég hafa til marks um, að ég muni eignast það?"
9 Og hann mælti við hann: "Fær mér þrevetra kvígu, þrevetra geit, þrevetran hrút, turtildúfu og unga dúfu."
10 Og hann færði honum öll þessi dýr og hlutaði þau sundur í miðju og lagði hvern hlutinn gegnt öðrum. En fuglana hlutaði hann ekki sundur.
11 Og hræfuglar flugu að ætinu, en Abram fældi þá burt.
12 Er sól var að renna, leið þungur svefnhöfgi á Abram, og sjá: felmti og miklu myrkri sló yfir hann.
13 Þá sagði hann við Abram: "Vit það fyrir víst, að niðjar þínir munu lifa sem útlendingar í landi, sem þeir eiga ekki, og þeir munu þjóna þeim, og þeir þjá þá í fjögur hundruð ár.
14 En þá þjóð, sem þeir munu þjóna, mun ég dæma, og síðar munu þeir þaðan fara með mikinn fjárhlut.
15 En þú skalt fara í friði til feðra þinna, þú skalt verða jarðaður í góðri elli.
16 Hinn fjórði ættliður þeirra mun koma hingað aftur, því að enn hafa Amorítar eigi fyllt mæli synda sinna."
17 En er sól var runnin og myrkt var orðið, kom reykur sem úr ofni og eldslogi, er leið fram á milli þessara fórnarstykkja.
18 Á þeim degi gjörði Drottinn sáttmála við Abram og mælti: "Þínu afkvæmi gef ég þetta land, frá Egyptalandsánni til árinnar miklu, árinnar Efrat:

20 Hetíta, Peresíta, Refaíta,

Abram and Lot Separate
13 So Abram went up from Egypt(A) to the Negev,(B) with his wife and everything he had, and Lot(C) went with him. 2 Abram had become very wealthy(D) in livestock(E) and in silver and gold.
3 From the Negev(F) he went from place to place until he came to Bethel,(G) to the place between Bethel and Ai(H) where his tent had been earlier 4 and where he had first built an altar.(I) There Abram called on the name of the Lord.(J)
5 Now Lot,(K) who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6 But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.(L) 7 And quarreling(M) arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites(N) and Perizzites(O) were also living in the land(P) at that time.
8 So Abram said to Lot,(Q) “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me,(R) or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives.(S) 9 Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”(T)
10 Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain(U) of the Jordan toward Zoar(V) was well watered, like the garden of the Lord,(W) like the land of Egypt.(X) (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom(Y) and Gomorrah.)(Z) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan,(AA) while Lot(AB) lived among the cities of the plain(AC) and pitched his tents near Sodom.(AD) 13 Now the people of Sodom(AE) were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.(AF)
14 The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.(AG) 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring[a] forever.(AH) 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.(AI) 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land,(AJ) for I am giving it to you.”(AK)
18 So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre(AL) at Hebron,(AM) where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.(AN)
Abram Rescues Lot
14 At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar,[b](AO) Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer(AP) king of Elam(AQ) and Tidal king of Goyim, 2 these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim,(AR) and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).(AS) 3 All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim(AT) (that is, the Dead Sea Valley(AU)). 4 For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer,(AV) but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
5 In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer(AW) and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites(AX) in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites(AY) in Shaveh Kiriathaim 6 and the Horites(AZ) in the hill country of Seir,(BA) as far as El Paran(BB) near the desert. 7 Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh),(BC) and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites,(BD) as well as the Amorites(BE) who were living in Hazezon Tamar.(BF)
8 Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah,(BG) the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim(BH) and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar)(BI) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim(BJ) 9 against Kedorlaomer(BK) king of Elam,(BL) Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim(BM) was full of tar(BN) pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah(BO) fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills.(BP) 11 The four kings seized all the goods(BQ) of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. 12 They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot(BR) and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.
13 A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew.(BS) Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre(BT) the Amorite, a brother[c] of Eshkol(BU) and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram. 14 When Abram heard that his relative(BV) had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained(BW) men born in his household(BX) and went in pursuit as far as Dan.(BY) 15 During the night Abram divided his men(BZ) to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.(CA) 16 He recovered(CB) all the goods(CC) and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.
17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer(CD) and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom(CE) came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).(CF)
18 Then Melchizedek(CG) king of Salem(CH) brought out bread(CI) and wine.(CJ) He was priest of God Most High,(CK) 19 and he blessed Abram,(CL) saying,
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,(CM)
Creator of heaven and earth.(CN)
20 And praise be to God Most High,(CO)
who delivered your enemies into your hand.”
Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.(CP)
21 The king of Sodom(CQ) said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods(CR) for yourself.”
22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom,(CS) “With raised hand(CT) I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High,(CU) Creator of heaven and earth,(CV) 23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you,(CW) not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre.(CX) Let them have their share.”
The Lord’s Covenant With Abram
15 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram(CY) in a vision:(CZ)
2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(DD) what can you give me since I remain childless(DE) and the one who will inherit[f] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?(DF)” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant(DG) in my household(DH) will be my heir.”
4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.(DI)” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars(DJ)—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring[g] be.”(DK)
6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.(DL)
7 He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out(DM) of Ur of the Chaldeans(DN) to give you this land to take possession of it.”(DO)
8 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(DP) how can I know(DQ) that I will gain possession of it?”(DR)
9 So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer,(DS) a goat and a ram, each three years old,(DT) along with a dove and a young pigeon.(DU)”
10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other;(DV) the birds, however, he did not cut in half.(DW) 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,(DX) but Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,(DY) and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years(DZ) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved(EA) and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out(EB) with great possessions.(EC) 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors(ED) in peace and be buried at a good old age.(EE) 16 In the fourth generation(EF) your descendants will come back here,(EG) for the sin of the Amorites(EH) has not yet reached its full measure.”
17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch(EI) appeared and passed between the pieces.(EJ) 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram(EK) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,(EL) from the Wadi[h] of Egypt(EM) to the great river, the Euphrates(EN)— 19 the land of the Kenites,(EO) Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites,(EP) Perizzites,(EQ) Rephaites,(ER) 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”(ES)

5 Þegar hann sá mannfjöldann, gekk hann upp á fjallið. Þar settist hann, og lærisveinar hans komu til hans.
2 Þá lauk hann upp munni sínum, kenndi þeim og sagði:
3 "Sælir eru fátækir í anda, því að þeirra er himnaríki.
4 Sælir eru sorgbitnir, því að þeir munu huggaðir verða.
5 Sælir eru hógværir, því að þeir munu jörðina erfa.
6 Sælir eru þeir, sem hungrar og þyrstir eftir réttlætinu, því að þeir munu saddir verða.
7 Sælir eru miskunnsamir, því að þeim mun miskunnað verða.
8 Sælir eru hjartahreinir, því að þeir munu Guð sjá.
9 Sælir eru friðflytjendur, því að þeir munu Guðs börn kallaðir verða.

14 Þér eruð ljós heimsins. Borg, sem á fjalli stendur, fær ekki dulist.
15 Ekki kveikja menn heldur ljós og setja undir mæliker, heldur á ljósastiku, og þá lýsir það öllum í húsinu.
16 Þannig lýsi ljós yðar meðal mannanna, að þeir sjái góð verk yðar og vegsami föður yðar, sem er á himnum.
17 Ætlið ekki, að ég sé kominn til að afnema lögmálið eða spámennina. Ég kom ekki til að afnema, heldur uppfylla.
18 Sannlega segi ég yður: Þar til himinn og jörð líða undir lok, mun ekki einn smástafur eða stafkrókur falla úr lögmálinu, uns allt er komið fram.
19 Hver sem því brýtur eitt af þessum minnstu boðum og kennir öðrum það, mun kallast minnstur í himnaríki, en sá, sem heldur þau og kennir, mun mikill kallast í himnaríki.
20 Ég segi yður: Ef réttlæti yðar ber ekki af réttlæti fræðimanna og farísea, komist þér aldrei í himnaríki.
21 Þér hafið heyrt, að sagt var við forfeðurna: ,Þú skalt ekki morð fremja. Sá sem morð fremur, skal svara til saka fyrir dómi.`
22 En ég segi yður: Hver sem reiðist bróður sínum, skal svara til saka fyrir dómi. Sá sem hrakyrðir bróður sinn skal svara til saka fyrir ráðinu og hver sem svívirðir hann, hefur unnið til eldsvítis.
23 Sértu því að færa fórn þína á altarið og minnist þess þar, að bróðir þinn hefur eitthvað á móti þér,
24 þá skaltu skilja gjöf þína eftir fyrir framan altarið, fara fyrst og sættast við bróður þinn, koma síðan og færa fórn þína.
25 Vertu skjótur til sátta við andstæðing þinn, meðan þú ert enn á vegi með honum, til þess að hann selji þig ekki dómaranum í hendur og dómarinn þjóninum og þér verði varpað í fangelsi.
26 Sannlega segi ég þér: Eigi munt þú komast út þaðan, fyrr en þú hefur borgað síðasta eyri.

Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount
5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes(A)
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(B)
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.(C)
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.(D)
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.(E)
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.(F)
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,(G)
for they will see God.(H)
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,(I)
for they will be called children of God.(J)
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,(K)
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(L)
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you,(M) persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.(N) 12 Rejoice and be glad,(O) because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.(P)
Salt and Light
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.(Q)
14 “You are the light of the world.(R) A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.(S) 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others,(T) that they may see your good deeds(U) and glorify(V) your Father in heaven.
The Fulfillment of the Law
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.(W) 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.(X) 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands(Y) and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.(Z)
Murder(AA)
21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a](AB) and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry(AC) with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment.(AD) Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court.(AE) And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.(AF)
23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
