Water from the Temple

47 Then he brought me back to the (A)door of the house; and behold, (B)water was flowing from under the threshold of the house toward the east, for the house faced east. And the water was flowing down from under, from the right side of the house, from south of the altar. And he brought me out by way of the north gate and led me around [a]on the outside to the outer gate, by the way facing east. And behold, water was spurting out from the south side.

When the man went out toward the east with a line in his hand, he measured a thousand [b]cubits, and he led me through the water, water reaching the ankles. Again he measured a thousand and led me through the water, water reaching the knees. Again he measured a thousand and led me through the water, water reaching the [c]hips. Again he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not [d]wade across, because the water had risen, enough water to swim in, a (C)river that could not be crossed by wading. And he said to me, “Son of man, have you (D)seen this?” Then he brought me [e]back to the bank of the river. Now when I had returned, behold, on the bank of the river there were very many (E)trees on the one side and on the other. Then he said to me, “These waters go out toward the eastern region and go down into the (F)Arabah; then they go toward the [f]sea, being made to flow into the (G)sea, and the waters of the sea become [g]fresh. And it will come about that every living creature which swarms in every place where the [h]river goes, will live. And there will be very many fish, for these waters go there and the others [i]become fresh; so (H)everything will live where the river goes. 10 And it will come about that (I)fishermen will stand beside it; from (J)Engedi to Eneglaim there will be a place for the (K)spreading of nets. Their fish will be according to their kinds, like the fish of the (L)Great Sea, (M)very many. 11 But its swamps and marshes will not become [j]fresh; they will be [k]left for (N)salt. 12 And (O)by the river on its bank, on one side and on the other, will grow all kinds of (P)trees for food. Their (Q)leaves will not wither and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month because their water flows from the sanctuary, and their fruit will be for food and their (R)leaves for healing.”

Boundaries and Division of the Land

13 This is what the Lord [l]God says: “This shall be the (S)boundary by which you shall divide the land for an inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel; Joseph shall have two (T)portions. 14 And you shall divide it for an inheritance, each one [m]equally with the other; for I [n](U)swore to give it to your forefathers, and this land shall fall to you [o]as an inheritance.

15 “And this shall be the boundary of the land: on the (V)north side, from the Great Sea by the way of Hethlon, to the entrance of [p](W)Zedad; 16 [q](X)Hamath, Berothah, Sibraim, which is between the border of (Y)Damascus and the border of Hamath; Hazer-hatticon, which is by the border of Hauran. 17 The boundary shall [r]extend from the sea to (Z)Hazar-enan at the border of Damascus, and on the north toward the north is the border of Hamath. This is the north side.

18 “The (AA)east side, from between Hauran, Damascus, (AB)Gilead, and the land of Israel, shall be the (AC)Jordan; from the north border to the eastern sea you shall measure. This is the east side.

19 “The (AD)south side toward the south shall extend from (AE)Tamar as far as the waters of (AF)Meribath-kadesh, to the (AG)brook of Egypt and to the (AH)Great Sea. This is the south side toward the south.

20 “And the (AI)west side shall be the Great Sea, from the south border to a point opposite [s](AJ)Lebo-hamath. This is the west side.

21 “So you shall divide this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 You shall divide it by (AK)lot for an inheritance among yourselves and among the (AL)strangers who stay in your midst, who bring forth sons in your midst. And they shall be to you as the native-born among the sons of Israel; they shall be allotted an (AM)inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel. 23 And in the tribe with which the stranger resides, there you shall give him his inheritance,” declares the Lord God.

Division of the Land

48 “Now (AN)these are the names of the tribes: from the northern extremity, [t]beside the way of Hethlon to [u]Lebo-hamath, as far as Hazar-enan at the border of Damascus, toward the north [v]beside Hamath, [w]running from east to west, (AO)Dan, one portion. Beside the border of Dan, from the east side to the west side, (AP)Asher, one portion. Beside the border of Asher, from the east side to the west side, (AQ)Naphtali, one portion. Beside the border of Naphtali, from the east side to the west side, (AR)Manasseh, one portion. Beside the border of Manasseh, from the east side to the west side, (AS)Ephraim, one portion. Beside the border of Ephraim, from the east side to the west side, (AT)Reuben, one portion. Beside the border of Reuben, from the east side to the west side, (AU)Judah, one portion.

“And beside the border of Judah, from the east side to the west side, shall be the [x]allotment which you shall [y]set apart, twenty-five thousand [z]cubits in width, and in length like one of the portions, from the east side to the west side; and the (AV)sanctuary shall be in the middle of it. The allotment that you shall set apart to the Lord shall be twenty-five thousand cubits in length and ten thousand in width.

Portion for the Priests

10 The holy allotment shall be for these, namely for the (AW)priests, toward the north twenty-five thousand cubits in length, toward the west ten thousand in width, toward the east ten thousand in width, and toward the south twenty-five thousand in length; and the sanctuary of the Lord shall be in its midst. 11 It shall be for the priests who are sanctified of the (AX)sons of Zadok, who have [aa]taken the responsibility I gave them, who did not go astray when the sons of Israel went astray as the (AY)Levites went astray. 12 It shall be an allotment to them from the allotment of the land, a most holy reserve, by the border of the Levites. 13 And alongside the border of the priests, the Levites shall have twenty-five thousand cubits in length and ten thousand in width. The entire length shall be twenty-five thousand cubits and the width ten thousand. 14 Moreover, they (AZ)shall not sell or exchange any of it, or allow this [ab]choice portion of land to pass to others; for it is holy to the Lord.

15 “The remainder, five thousand cubits in width and twenty-five thousand [ac]in length, shall be for (BA)common use for the city, for homes and for [ad]open spaces; and the city shall be in its midst. 16 And these shall be its measurements: the north side, 4,500 cubits, the south side (BB)4,500 cubits, the east side 4,500 cubits, and the west side, 4,500 cubits. 17 The city shall have [ae]open spaces: on the north 250 cubits, on the south 250 cubits, on the east 250 cubits, and on the west 250 cubits. 18 The remainder of the length alongside the holy allotment shall be ten thousand cubits toward the east and ten thousand toward the west; and it shall be [af]alongside the holy allotment. And its produce shall be food for the workers of the city. 19 And the workers of the city, out of all the tribes of Israel, shall cultivate it. 20 The whole allotment shall be twenty-five thousand by twenty-five thousand cubits; you shall [ag]set apart the holy allotment, a [ah]square, with the [ai]property of the city.

Portion for the Prince

21 “The (BC)remainder shall be for the prince, on the one side and on the other of the holy allotment and of the [aj]property of the city; in front of the twenty-five thousand cubits of the allotment toward the east border and westward in front of the twenty-five thousand toward the west border, alongside the portions, it shall be for the prince. And the holy allotment and the sanctuary of the house shall be in the middle of it. 22 And exclusive of the [ak]property of the Levites and the [al]property of the city, which are in the middle of that which belongs to the prince, everything between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin shall belong to the prince.

Portion for Other Tribes

23 “As for the rest of the tribes: from the east side to the west side, (BD)Benjamin, one portion. 24 Beside the border of Benjamin, from the east side to the west side, (BE)Simeon, one portion. 25 Beside the border of Simeon, from the east side to the west side, (BF)Issachar, one portion. 26 Beside the border of Issachar, from the east side to the west side, (BG)Zebulun, one portion. 27 Beside the border of Zebulun, from the east side to the west side, (BH)Gad, one portion. 28 And beside the border of Gad, at the south side toward the south, the border shall be from (BI)Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh, to the brook of Egypt, to the (BJ)Great Sea. 29 This is the (BK)land which you shall divide by lot to the tribes of Israel for an inheritance, and these are their several portions,” declares the Lord [am]God.

The City Gates

30 “Now these are the exits of the city: on the (BL)north side, 4,500 cubits by measurement, 31 [an]shall be the gates of the city, [ao](BM)named for the tribes of Israel, three gates toward the north: the gate of Reuben, one; the gate of Judah, one; and the gate of Levi, one. 32 On the east side, 4,500 cubits, [ap]shall be three gates: the gate of Joseph, one; the gate of Benjamin, one; and the gate of Dan, one. 33 On the south side, 4,500 cubits by measurement, [aq]shall be three gates: the gate of Simeon, one; the gate of Issachar, one; and the gate of Zebulun, one. 34 On the west side, 4,500 cubits, shall be three gates: the gate of Gad, one; the gate of Asher, one; and the gate of Naphtali, one. 35 The city shall be eighteen thousand cubits all around; and the (BN)name of the city from that day shall be, ‘[ar]The (BO)Lord is there.’”

The River From the Temple

47 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water(A) coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar.(B) He then brought me out through the north gate(C) and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.

As the man went eastward with a measuring line(D) in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits[a] and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river(E) that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross.(F) He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?”

Then he led me back to the bank of the river. When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river.(G) He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah,[b](H) where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh.(I) Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.(J) 10 Fishermen(K) will stand along the shore; from En Gedi(L) to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets.(M) The fish will be of many kinds(N)—like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea.(O) 11 But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.(P) 12 Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river.(Q) Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit(R) fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary(S) flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.(T)

The Boundaries of the Land

13 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “These are the boundaries(U) of the land that you will divide among the twelve tribes of Israel as their inheritance, with two portions for Joseph.(V) 14 You are to divide it equally among them. Because I swore with uplifted hand to give it to your ancestors, this land will become your inheritance.(W)

15 “This is to be the boundary of the land:(X)

“On the north side it will run from the Mediterranean Sea(Y) by the Hethlon road(Z) past Lebo Hamath to Zedad, 16 Berothah[c](AA) and Sibraim (which lies on the border between Damascus and Hamath),(AB) as far as Hazer Hattikon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 The boundary will extend from the sea to Hazar Enan,[d] along the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This will be the northern boundary.(AC)

18 “On the east side the boundary will run between Hauran and Damascus, along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel, to the Dead Sea and as far as Tamar.[e] This will be the eastern boundary.(AD)

19 “On the south side it will run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribah Kadesh,(AE) then along the Wadi of Egypt(AF) to the Mediterranean Sea.(AG) This will be the southern boundary.

20 “On the west side, the Mediterranean Sea will be the boundary to a point opposite Lebo Hamath.(AH) This will be the western boundary.(AI)

21 “You are to distribute this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 You are to allot it as an inheritance(AJ) for yourselves and for the foreigners(AK) residing among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.(AL) 23 In whatever tribe a foreigner resides, there you are to give them their inheritance,” declares the Sovereign Lord.(AM)

The Division of the Land

48 “These are the tribes, listed by name: At the northern frontier, Dan(AN) will have one portion; it will follow the Hethlon road(AO) to Lebo Hamath;(AP) Hazar Enan and the northern border of Damascus next to Hamath will be part of its border from the east side to the west side.

“Asher(AQ) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Dan from east to west.

“Naphtali(AR) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Asher from east to west.

“Manasseh(AS) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Naphtali from east to west.

“Ephraim(AT) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Manasseh(AU) from east to west.(AV)

“Reuben(AW) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Ephraim from east to west.

“Judah(AX) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Reuben from east to west.

“Bordering the territory of Judah from east to west will be the portion you are to present as a special gift. It will be 25,000 cubits[f] wide, and its length from east to west will equal one of the tribal portions; the sanctuary will be in the center of it.(AY)

“The special portion you are to offer to the Lord will be 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits[g] wide.(AZ) 10 This will be the sacred portion for the priests. It will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. In the center of it will be the sanctuary of the Lord.(BA) 11 This will be for the consecrated priests, the Zadokites,(BB) who were faithful in serving me(BC) and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray.(BD) 12 It will be a special gift to them from the sacred portion of the land, a most holy portion, bordering the territory of the Levites.

13 “Alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites will have an allotment 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. Its total length will be 25,000 cubits and its width 10,000 cubits.(BE) 14 They must not sell or exchange any of it. This is the best of the land and must not pass into other hands, because it is holy to the Lord.(BF)

15 “The remaining area, 5,000 cubits[h] wide and 25,000 cubits long, will be for the common use of the city, for houses and for pastureland. The city will be in the center of it 16 and will have these measurements: the north side 4,500 cubits,[i] the south side 4,500 cubits, the east side 4,500 cubits, and the west side 4,500 cubits.(BG) 17 The pastureland for the city will be 250 cubits[j] on the north, 250 cubits on the south, 250 cubits on the east, and 250 cubits on the west. 18 What remains of the area, bordering on the sacred portion and running the length of it, will be 10,000 cubits on the east side and 10,000 cubits on the west side. Its produce will supply food for the workers of the city.(BH) 19 The workers from the city who farm it will come from all the tribes of Israel. 20 The entire portion will be a square, 25,000 cubits on each side. As a special gift you will set aside the sacred portion, along with the property of the city.

21 “What remains on both sides of the area formed by the sacred portion and the property of the city will belong to the prince. It will extend eastward from the 25,000 cubits of the sacred portion to the eastern border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the western border. Both these areas running the length of the tribal portions will belong to the prince, and the sacred portion with the temple sanctuary will be in the center of them.(BI) 22 So the property of the Levites and the property of the city will lie in the center of the area that belongs to the prince. The area belonging to the prince will lie between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin.

23 “As for the rest of the tribes: Benjamin(BJ) will have one portion; it will extend from the east side to the west side.

24 “Simeon(BK) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Benjamin from east to west.

25 “Issachar(BL) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Simeon from east to west.

26 “Zebulun(BM) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Issachar from east to west.

27 “Gad(BN) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Zebulun from east to west.

28 “The southern boundary of Gad will run south from Tamar(BO) to the waters of Meribah Kadesh, then along the Wadi of Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea.(BP)

29 “This is the land you are to allot as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel, and these will be their portions,” declares the Sovereign Lord.(BQ)

The Gates of the New City

30 “These will be the exits of the city: Beginning on the north side, which is 4,500 cubits long, 31 the gates of the city will be named after the tribes of Israel. The three gates on the north side will be the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah and the gate of Levi.

32 “On the east side, which is 4,500 cubits long, will be three gates: the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin and the gate of Dan.

33 “On the south side, which measures 4,500 cubits, will be three gates: the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar and the gate of Zebulun.

34 “On the west side, which is 4,500 cubits long, will be three gates: the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher and the gate of Naphtali.(BR)

35 “The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits.[k]

“And the name of the city from that time on will be:

the Lord is there.(BS)

17 Now in the (A)twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, (B)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his army labor [a]hard against Tyre; every head [b]had a (C)bald spot and every shoulder was rubbed raw. But he and his army acquired no wages from Tyre for the labor that he had [c]performed against it.” 19 Therefore this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am going to (D)give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. And he will carry off her (E)wealth and capture her spoils and seize her plunder; and it will be wages for his army. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt for his labor which he [d](F)performed, because they acted for Me,” declares the Lord God.

21 “On that day I will make a (G)horn sprout for the house of Israel, and I will [e](H)open your mouth among them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Grief over Egypt

30 The word of the Lord came again to me, saying, “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord [f]God says:

(I)Wail, ‘Woe for the day!’
For the day is near,
Indeed, (J)the day of the Lord is near;
It will be a day of (K)clouds,
A time of doom for the nations.
A sword will come upon Egypt,
And there will be trembling in [g]Cush;
When the slain fall in Egypt,
They will (L)take away her [h]wealth,
And her foundations will be torn down.

[i]Cush, Put, Lud, all [j](M)Arabia, [k]Libya and the [l]people of the land [m]that is in league will fall with them by the sword.”

‘This is what the Lord says:
“Indeed, those who support (N)Egypt will fall
And the pride of her power will come down;
From Migdol to Syene
They will fall within her by the sword,”
Declares the Lord God.
“They will be desolate
In the (O)midst of the desolated lands;
And her cities will be
In the midst of the devastated cities.
And they will (P)know that I am the Lord,
When I set a (Q)fire in Egypt
And all her helpers are broken.

On that day (R)messengers will go out from Me in ships to frighten (S)carefree [n]Cush; and (T)trembling will come on them as on the day of Egypt; for behold, it is coming!”

10 ‘This is what the Lord God says:

(U)I will also make the [o]hordes of Egypt cease
By the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
11 He and his people with him,
(V)The most ruthless of the nations,
Will be brought in to destroy the land;
And they will draw their swords against Egypt
And fill the land with the slain.
12 Moreover, I will make the (W)Nile canals dry
And (X)sell the land into the hands of evil men.
And I will make the land desolate
And [p]all that is in it,
By the hand of strangers; I the Lord have spoken.”

13 ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“I will also (Y)destroy the idols
And make the [q]images cease from [r](Z)Memphis.
And there will no longer be a prince in the land of Egypt;
And I will put fear in the land of Egypt.
14 I will make (AA)Pathros desolate,
Set a fire in (AB)Zoan
And execute judgments on [s](AC)Thebes.
15 I will pour out My wrath on [t]Sin,
The stronghold of Egypt;
I will also eliminate the hordes of [u]Thebes.
16 I will set a fire in Egypt;
[v]Sin will writhe in anguish,
[w]Thebes will be breached
And [x]Memphis will have [y]distresses daily.
17 The young men of [z](AD)On and of Pi-beseth
Will fall by the sword,
And [aa]the women will go into captivity.
18 In (AE)Tehaphnehes the day will [ab]be (AF)dark
When I (AG)break there the yoke bars of Egypt.
Then the pride of her power will cease in her;
A cloud will cover her,
And her daughters will go into captivity.
19 So I will (AH)execute judgments on Egypt,
And they will know that I am the Lord.”’”

Nebuchadnezzar’s Reward

17 In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month on the first day, the word of the Lord came to me:(A) 18 “Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar(B) king of Babylon drove his army in a hard campaign against Tyre; every head was rubbed bare(C) and every shoulder made raw.(D) Yet he and his army got no reward from the campaign he led against Tyre. 19 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to give Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king(E) of Babylon, and he will carry off its wealth. He will loot and plunder(F) the land as pay for his army.(G) 20 I have given him Egypt(H) as a reward for his efforts because he and his army did it for me, declares the Sovereign Lord.(I)

21 “On that day I will make a horn[a](J) grow for the Israelites, and I will open your mouth(K) among them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(L)

A Lament Over Egypt

30 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, prophesy and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Wail(M) and say,
    “Alas for that day!”
For the day is near,(N)
    the day of the Lord(O) is near—
a day of clouds,
    a time of doom for the nations.
A sword will come against Egypt,(P)
    and anguish will come upon Cush.[b](Q)
When the slain fall in Egypt,
    her wealth will be carried away
    and her foundations torn down.(R)

Cush and Libya,(S) Lydia and all Arabia,(T) Kub and the people(U) of the covenant land will fall by the sword along with Egypt.(V)

“‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘The allies of Egypt will fall
    and her proud strength will fail.
From Migdol to Aswan(W)
    they will fall by the sword within her,
declares the Sovereign Lord.
“‘They will be desolate
    among desolate lands,
and their cities will lie
    among ruined cities.(X)
Then they will know that I am the Lord,
    when I set fire(Y) to Egypt
    and all her helpers are crushed.(Z)

“‘On that day messengers will go out from me in ships to frighten Cush(AA) out of her complacency. Anguish(AB) will take hold of them on the day of Egypt’s doom, for it is sure to come.(AC)

10 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I will put an end to the hordes of Egypt
    by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar(AD) king of Babylon.(AE)
11 He and his army—the most ruthless of nations(AF)
    will be brought in to destroy the land.
They will draw their swords against Egypt
    and fill the land with the slain.(AG)
12 I will dry up(AH) the waters of the Nile(AI)
    and sell the land to an evil nation;
by the hand of foreigners
    I will lay waste(AJ) the land and everything in it.

I the Lord have spoken.

13 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I will destroy the idols(AK)
    and put an end to the images in Memphis.(AL)
No longer will there be a prince in Egypt,(AM)
    and I will spread fear throughout the land.
14 I will lay(AN) waste Upper Egypt,
    set fire to Zoan(AO)
    and inflict punishment on Thebes.(AP)
15 I will pour out my wrath on Pelusium,
    the stronghold of Egypt,
    and wipe out the hordes of Thebes.
16 I will set fire(AQ) to Egypt;
    Pelusium will writhe in agony.
Thebes will be taken by storm;
    Memphis(AR) will be in constant distress.
17 The young men of Heliopolis(AS) and Bubastis
    will fall by the sword,
    and the cities themselves will go into captivity.
18 Dark will be the day at Tahpanhes(AT)
    when I break the yoke of Egypt;(AU)
    there her proud strength will come to an end.
She will be covered with clouds,
    and her villages will go into captivity.(AV)
19 So I will inflict punishment(AW) on Egypt,
    and they will know that I am the Lord.’”
