Grief over Tyre

27 Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “And you, son of man, (A)take up a song of mourning over Tyre; and say to Tyre, (B)who sits at the [a]entrance to the sea, (C)merchant of the peoples to many coastlands, ‘This is what the Lord [b]God says:

“Tyre, you have said, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’
Your borders are in the heart of the seas;
Your builders have perfected your beauty.
They have [c]made all your planks of juniper trees from (D)Senir;
They have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
Of (E)oaks from (F)Bashan they have made your rudders;
With ivory they have [d]inlaid your deck of boxwood from the coastlands of (G)Cyprus.
Your sail was of colorfully embroidered linen from Egypt
So that it became your flag;
Your [e]awning was (H)violet and purple from the coastlands of (I)Elishah.
The inhabitants of Sidon and (J)Arvad were your rowers;
Your (K)wise men, Tyre, were [f]aboard; they were your sailors.
The elders of (L)Gebal and her wise men were with you repairing your leaks;
All the ships of the sea and their sailors were with you in order to deal in your merchandise.

10 (M)Persia, (N)Lud, and (O)Put were in your army, your men of war. They hung up shield and helmet on you; they presented your splendor. 11 The sons of Arvad and your army were on your walls, all around, and the [g]Gammadim were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they perfected your beauty.

12 “Tarshish was your customer because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth; with silver, iron, tin, and lead they paid for your merchandise. 13 (P)Javan, (Q)Tubal, and (R)Meshech, they were your traders; with human (S)lives and vessels of bronze they paid for your merchandise. 14 Those from (T)Beth-togarmah gave horses, war horses, and mules for your merchandise. 15 The sons of (U)Dedan were your traders. Many coastlands were [h]your market; they brought (V)ivory tusks and ebony as your payment. 16 (W)Aram was your customer because of the abundance of your [i]goods; they paid for your merchandise with [j](X)emeralds, purple, (Y)colorfully woven cloth, fine linen, coral, and rubies. 17 Judah and the land of Israel, they were your traders; with the wheat of (Z)Minnith, [k]cakes, honey, oil, and balsam they paid for your merchandise. 18 (AA)Damascus was your customer because of the abundance of your [l]goods, because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth, because of the wine of Helbon and white wool. 19 Vedan and Javan paid for your merchandise from Uzal; wrought iron, cassia, and spice reed were among your merchandise. 20 (AB)Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21 (AC)Arabia and all the princes of Kedar, they were [m]your customers for (AD)lambs, rams, and goats; for these they were your customers. 22 The traders of (AE)Sheba and Raamah, they traded with you; they paid for your merchandise with the best of all (AF)balsam oil, and with all kinds of precious stones, and gold. 23 Haran, Canneh, (AG)Eden, the traders of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24 They traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of violet and colorfully woven cloth, and in blankets of two colors, and tightly wound cords, which were among your merchandise. 25 The (AH)ships of Tarshish were [n]the carriers for your merchandise.

And you were filled and were very [o]glorious
In the heart of the seas.

26 “Your rowers have brought you
Into (AI)great waters;
The (AJ)east wind has broken you
In the heart of the seas.
27 Your wealth, your wares, your merchandise,
Your seamen and your sailors,
Your repairers of leaks, your dealers in merchandise,
And all your men of war who are in you,
With all your contingent that is in your midst,
Will fall into the heart of the seas
On the day of your overthrow.
28 At the sound of the cry of your sailors,
The pasture lands will (AK)shake.
29 All who handle the oar,
The (AL)seamen and all the sailors of the sea
Will come down from their ships;
They will stand on the land,
30 And they will (AM)make their voice heard over you
And cry out bitterly.
They will (AN)throw dust on their heads,
They will (AO)wallow in ashes.
31 Also they will shave themselves (AP)bald for you
And (AQ)put on sackcloth;
And they will (AR)weep for you in bitterness of soul
With bitter mourning.
32 Moreover, in their wailing they will take up a (AS)song of mourning for you
And sing a song of mourning over you:
‘Who is like Tyre,
Like her who is silent in the midst of the sea?
33 When your merchandise went out from the seas,
You satisfied many peoples;
With the (AT)abundance of your wealth and your merchandise
You enriched the kings of the earth.
34 [p]Now that you are (AU)broken by the seas
In the depths of the waters,
Your (AV)merchandise and all your company
Have fallen in the midst of you.
35 All the (AW)inhabitants of the coastlands
Are appalled at you,
And their kings are horribly afraid;
They [q]have a troubled look.
36 The merchants among the peoples (AX)hiss at you;
You have become [r]terrified
And you (AY)will cease to be forever.’”’”

Tyre’s King Overthrown

28 The word of the Lord came again to me, saying, “Son of man, say to the [s]leader of Tyre, ‘The Lord [t]God says this:

“Because your heart is haughty
And you have said, ‘(AZ)I am a god,
I sit in the seat of [u]gods
In the heart of the seas’;
Yet you are a (BA)mortal and not God,
Although you make your heart like the heart of God—
Behold, you are wiser than (BB)Daniel;
There is no secret that is a match for you!
By your wisdom and understanding
You have acquired (BC)riches for yourself
And have acquired gold and silver for your treasuries.
By your great wisdom, by your (BD)trade
You have increased your riches,
And your (BE)heart is haughty because of your riches—

Therefore this is what the Lord God says:

‘Because you have (BF)made your heart
Like the heart of God,
Therefore, behold, I am going to bring (BG)strangers against you,
The (BH)most ruthless of the nations.
And they will draw their swords
Against the beauty of your wisdom
And profane your splendor.
They will bring you down to the pit,
And you will die the (BI)death of those who are killed
In the heart of the seas.
Will you still say, “I am a god,”
In the presence of one who kills you,
Though you are a mortal and not God,
In the hands of those who wound you?
10 You will die the death of the (BJ)uncircumcised
By the hand of strangers,
For I have spoken!’ declares the Lord God!”’”

11 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 “Son of man, (BK)take up a song of mourning over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“You [v]had the seal of [w]perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in (BL)Eden, the garden of God;
(BM)Every precious stone was your covering:
The (BN)ruby, the topaz and the diamond;
The beryl, the onyx and the jasper;
The lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald;
And the gold, the workmanship of your [x](BO)settings and [y]sockets,
Was in you.
On the day that you were created
They were prepared.
14 You were the (BP)anointed cherub who [z]covers,
And I placed you there.
You were on the holy (BQ)mountain of God;
You walked in the midst of the (BR)stones of fire.
15 You were (BS)blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until (BT)unrighteousness was found in you.
16 By the (BU)abundance of your trade
[aa]You were internally (BV)filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, you [ab]covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was haughty because of your (BW)beauty;
You (BX)corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.
I threw you to the ground;
I put you before (BY)kings,
That they may see you.
18 By the multitude of your wrongdoings,
In the unrighteousness of your trade
You profaned your sanctuaries.
Therefore I have brought (BZ)fire from the midst of you;
It has consumed you,
And I have turned you to (CA)ashes on the earth
In the eyes of all who see you.
19 All who know you among the peoples
Are appalled at you;
You have become [ac](CB)terrified
And you will cease to be (CC)forever.”’”

Judgment of Sidon

20 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, (CD)set your face toward (CE)Sidon, prophesy against her 22 and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“Behold, I am against you, Sidon,
And I will appear in My glory in your midst.
Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I (CF)execute judgments against her,
And I will reveal Myself as holy in her.
23 For (CG)I will send a plague to her
And blood to her streets,
And the (CH)wounded will [ad]fall in her midst
By the sword upon her on every side;
Then they will know that I am the Lord.

24 And there will no longer be for the house of Israel a (CI)painful thorn or a hurtful thorn bush from any surrounding them who despised them; then they will know that I am the Lord God.”

Israel Regathered

25 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “When I (CJ)gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and show Myself holy among them in the sight of the nations, then they will (CK)live on their land which I gave to My servant Jacob. 26 They will (CL)live on it securely; and they will (CM)build houses, plant vineyards, and live securely when I (CN)execute judgments upon all around them who despise them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.”’”

Judgment of Egypt

29 In the (CO)tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against (CP)Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all (CQ)Egypt. Speak and say, ‘This is what the Lord [ae]God says:

“Behold, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
The great [af](CR)monster that lies in the midst of his [ag]canals,
That (CS)has said, ‘My Nile is mine, and I myself have made it.’
I will put (CT)hooks in your jaws
And make the fish of your [ah]canals cling to your scales.
And I will bring you up out of the midst of your [ai]canals,
And all the fish of your [aj]canals will cling to your scales.
I will (CU)abandon you to the wilderness, you and all the fish of your [ak]canals;
You will fall on the [al]open field; you will not be brought together or [am](CV)gathered.
I have given you for (CW)food to the animals of the earth and to the birds of the sky.
Then all the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am the Lord,
Because they have been only a (CX)staff made of reed to the house of Israel.
When they took hold of you with the hand,
You (CY)broke and tore all their [an]hands;
And when they leaned on you,
You broke and made all their hips [ao]shake.”

‘Therefore the Lord God says this: “Behold, I am going to (CZ)bring upon you a sword, and I will cut off from you human and animal life. The (DA)land of Egypt will become a desolation and place of ruins. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“Because [ap]you (DB)said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I have made it,’ 10 therefore, behold, I am (DC)against you and against your [aq]canals, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene and as far as the border of [ar]Cush. 11 A human foot will (DD)not pass through it, nor will the foot of an animal pass through it, and it will not be inhabited for forty years. 12 So I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the (DE)midst of deserted lands. And her cities, in the midst of cities that are laid waste, will be desolate for forty years; and I will (DF)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands.”

13 ‘For this is what the Lord God says: “At the end of forty years I will (DG)gather the Egyptians from the peoples [as]among whom they were scattered. 14 And I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and bring them back to the land of (DH)Pathros, to the land of their origin, and there they will be a lowly kingdom. 15 It will be the (DI)lowest of the kingdoms, and it will not raise itself above the nations again. And I will make them small so that they will not (DJ)rule over the nations. 16 And it will no longer be a kingdom on which (DK)the house of Israel relies, [at](DL)bringing to mind the guilt of their having turned [au]to Egypt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.”’”

17 Now in the (DM)twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, (DN)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his army labor [av]hard against Tyre; every head [aw]had a (DO)bald spot and every shoulder was rubbed raw. But he and his army acquired no wages from Tyre for the labor that he had [ax]performed against it.” 19 Therefore this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am going to (DP)give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. And he will carry off her (DQ)wealth and capture her spoils and seize her plunder; and it will be wages for his army. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt for his labor which he [ay](DR)performed, because they acted for Me,” declares the Lord God.

21 “On that day I will make a (DS)horn sprout for the house of Israel, and I will [az](DT)open your mouth among them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Godly Living

(A)In the same way, you wives, (B)be subject to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be (C)won over without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your pure [a]and respectful behavior. (D)Your adornment must not be merely the external—braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or putting on apparel; but it should be (E)the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. For in this way the holy women of former times, (F)who hoped in God, also used to adorn themselves, being subject to their own husbands, just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, (G)calling him lord; and you have proved to be her children if you do what is right [b](H)without being frightened by any fear.

(I)You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with [c](J)someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

[d]To sum up, (K)all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, [e](L)loving, (M)compassionate, and (N)humble; (O)not returning evil for evil or (P)insult for insult, but giving a (Q)blessing instead; for (R)you were called for the very purpose that you would (S)inherit a blessing. 10 For,

(T)The one who desires life, to love and see good days,
Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
11 (U)He must turn away from evil and do good;
He must seek peace and pursue it.
12 (V)For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,
And His ears attend to their prayer,
But the face of the Lord is against evildoers.”

13 (W)And who is [f]there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should (X)suffer for the sake of righteousness, (Y)you [g]are blessed. (Z)And do not fear their [h]intimidation, and do not be in dread, 15 but [i]sanctify (AA)Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready (AB)to make a [j]defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the (AC)hope that is in you, but (AD)with gentleness and (AE)respect; 16 [k]and keep a (AF)good conscience so that in the thing in which (AG)you are slandered, those who disparage your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 17 For (AH)it is better, (AI)if [l]God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. 18 For (AJ)Christ also [m]suffered for sins (AK)once for all time, the just for the unjust, so that He might (AL)bring us to God, having been put to death (AM)in the flesh, but made alive (AN)in the [n]spirit; 19 in [o]which He also went and made proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20 who once were disobedient when the (AO)patience of God (AP)kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of (AQ)the ark, in which a few, that is, (AR)eight (AS)persons, were brought safely through the water. 21 (AT)Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—(AU)not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God [p]for a (AV)good conscience—through (AW)the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 (AX)who is at the right hand of God, (AY)having gone into heaven, (AZ)after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.
