8 Það var á sjötta ári, fimmta dag hins sjötta mánaðar, þá er ég sat í húsi mínu, og öldungar Júda sátu frammi fyrir mér, að hönd Drottins Guðs kom þar yfir mig.
2 Og ég sá, og sjá, þar var mynd, ásýndum sem maður. Þar í frá, sem mér þóttu lendar hans vera, og niður eftir, var eins og eldur, en frá lendum hans og upp eftir var að sjá sem bjarma, eins og ljómaði af lýsigulli.
3 Og hann rétti út líkast sem hönd væri og tók í höfuðhár mitt, og andinn hóf mig upp milli himins og jarðar og flutti mig til Jerúsalem í guðlegri sýn, að dyrum innra hliðsins, er snýr mót norðri, þar er líkansúlan stóð, sú er vakti afbrýði Drottins.
4 Og sjá, þar var dýrð Ísraels Guðs, alveg eins og í sýn þeirri, er ég hafði séð í dalnum.
5 Hann sagði við mig: "Mannsson, hef upp augu þín og lít í norðurátt!" Og ég hóf upp augu mín og leit í norðurátt. Stóð þá þessi líkansúla, sem afbrýði vakti, norðan megin við altarishliðið, rétt þar sem inn er gengið.
6 Og hann sagði við mig: "Mannsson, sér þú, hvað þeir eru að gjöra? Miklar svívirðingar eru það, sem Ísraelsmenn hafa hér í frammi, svo að ég verð að vera fjarri helgidómi mínum, en þú munt enn sjá miklar svívirðingar."
7 Hann leiddi mig að dyrum forgarðsins. Og er ég leit á, var þar gat eitt á veggnum.
8 Og hann sagði við mig: "Mannsson, brjót þú gat í gegnum vegginn." Og er ég braut gat í gegnum vegginn, þá voru þar dyr.
9 Og hann sagði við mig: "Gakk inn og sjá hinar vondu svívirðingar, sem þeir hafa hér í frammi."
10 Ég gekk inn og litaðist um. Voru þar ristar allt umhverfis á vegginn alls konar myndir viðbjóðslegra orma og skepna og öll skurðgoð Ísraelsmanna.
11 Og þar voru sjötíu menn af öldungum Ísraels húss og Jaasanja Safansson mitt á meðal þeirra svo sem forstjóri þeirra, og hélt hver þeirra á reykelsiskeri í hendi sér og sté þar upp af ilmandi reykelsismökkur.
12 Og hann sagði við mig: "Hefir þú séð, mannsson, hvað öldungar Ísraels húss hafast að í myrkrinu, hver í sínum myndaherbergjum? Því að þeir hugsa: ,Drottinn sér oss ekki, Drottinn hefir yfirgefið landið."`
13 Því næst sagði hann við mig: "Þú munt enn sjá miklar svívirðingar, er þeir hafa í frammi."
14 Hann leiddi mig að dyrunum á norðurhliði musteris Drottins. Þar sátu konurnar, þær er grétu Tammús.
15 Og hann sagði við mig: "Sér þú það, mannsson? Þú munt enn sjá svívirðingar, sem meiri eru en þessar."
16 Hann leiddi mig inn í innra forgarð húss Drottins, og voru þá þar fyrir dyrum musteris Drottins, milli forsalsins og altarisins, um tuttugu og fimm menn. Sneru þeir bökum við musteri Drottins, en ásjónum sínum í austur, og tilbáðu sólina í austri.
17 Og hann sagði við mig: "Sér þú það, mannsson? Nægir Júdamönnum það eigi að hafa í frammi þær svívirðingar, sem þeir hér fremja, þó að þeir ekki þar á ofan fylli landið með glæp og reiti mig hvað eftir annað til reiði? Sjá, hversu þeir halda vöndlinum upp að nösum sér.
18 Fyrir því vil ég og fara mínu fram í reiði: Ég vil ekki líta þá vægðarauga og enga meðaumkun sýna. Og þótt þeir þá kalli hárri röddu í eyru mín, þá mun ég ekki heyra þá."
9 Þessu næst kallaði hann hárri röddu í eyru mín: "Refsingar borgarinnar nálgast!"
2 Þá komu sex menn frá efra hliðinu, sem snýr í norður, og hafði hver þeirra eyðingarverkfæri í hendi sér, og meðal þeirra var einn maður, sem var líni klæddur og hafði skriffæri við síðu sér. Þeir komu og námu staðar hjá eiraltarinu.
3 Dýrð Ísraels Guðs hafði hafið sig frá kerúbunum, þar sem hún hafði verið, yfir að þröskuldi hússins. Og hann kallaði á línklædda manninn, sem hafði skriffærin við síðu sér.
4 Og Drottinn sagði við hann: "Gakk þú mitt í gegnum borgina, mitt í gegnum Jerúsalem, og set merki á enni þeirra manna, sem andvarpa og kveina yfir öllum þeim svívirðingum, sem framdar eru inni í henni."
5 En til hinna mælti hann að mér áheyrandi: "Farið á eftir honum um borgina og höggvið niður, lítið engan vægðarauga og sýnið enga meðaumkun.
6 Öldunga og æskumenn, meyjar og börn og konur skuluð þér brytja niður, en engan mann skuluð þér snerta, sem merkið er á. Og takið fyrst til hjá helgidómi mínum!" Og þeir tóku fyrst til á öldungum þeim, sem voru fyrir framan musterið.
7 Og hann sagði við þá: "Horfið ekki í að saurga musterið og fyllið strætin vegnum mönnum. Gangið nú út!" Þeir gengu þá út og hjuggu niður mannfólkið í borginni.
8 Meðan þeir brytjuðu niður, féll ég fram á ásjónu mína, kallaði og sagði: "Æ, Drottinn Guð, ætlar þú að gjöreyða öllum eftirleifum Ísraels, þar sem þú eys út reiði þinni yfir Jerúsalem?"
9 Þá sagði hann við mig: "Misgjörð Ísraelsmanna og Júdamanna er afskaplega mikil, og landið er fullt af blóðugu ranglæti og borgin er full af ofbeldisverkum, því að þeir segja: ,Drottinn hefir yfirgefið landið` og ,Drottinn sér það ekki.`
10 Fyrir því skal ég heldur ekki líta þá vægðarauga og enga meðaumkun sýna. Ég læt athæfi þeirra þeim sjálfum í koll koma."
11 Þá kom línklæddi maðurinn, sem hafði skriffærin við síðu sér, aftur og sagði: "Ég hefi gjört eins og þú bauðst mér."
10 Ég sá, og sjá: Á festingunni, er var yfir höfði kerúbanna, var því líkast sem safírsteinn væri. Eitthvað, sem tilsýndar var sem hásæti í laginu, sást uppi yfir þeim.
2 Þá sagði hann við línklædda manninn: "Gakk inn á millum hjólanna undir kerúbunum, tak handfylli þína af glóðum milli kerúbanna og dreif þeim út yfir borgina." Og hann gekk þar inn að mér ásjáandi.
3 En kerúbarnir stóðu hægra megin við musterið, þegar maðurinn gekk inn, og fyllti skýið innra forgarðinn.
4 En dýrð Drottins hóf sig frá kerúbunum yfir á þröskuld musterisins. Varð musterið þá fullt af skýmekki, en forgarðurinn fylltist ljóma af dýrð Drottins.
5 Og vængjaþytur kerúbanna heyrðist allt til hins ytra forgarðs, eins og rödd Guðs almáttugs, þá er hann talar.
6 Nú er hann hafði boðið línklædda manninum og sagt: "Tak eld á millum hjólanna, á millum kerúbanna!" _ þá gekk hann til og staðnæmdist hjá einu hjólinu.
7 Þá rétti einn kerúbinn hönd sína út milli kerúbanna að eldinum, sem var á milli kerúbanna, tók þar af og fékk í hendur línklædda manninum. Hann tók við og gekk burt.
8 En á kerúbunum sást eitthvað, sem líktist mannshendi, undir vængjum þeirra.
9 Ég leit til, og voru þá fjögur hjól hjá kerúbunum, sitt hjól hjá hverjum kerúb, og hjólin voru á að líta eins og þegar blikar á krýsolítstein.
10 Og að því er gerð þeirra snertir, þá voru þau öll fjögur samlík, eins og eitt hjólið væri innan í öðru hjóli.
11 Þegar þau gengu, gengu þau til allra fjögurra hliða. Þau snerust eigi við í göngunni, heldur gengu þau í þá átt, sem höfuðið sneri, þau snerust eigi við í göngunni.
12 Og allur líkami þeirra og bak þeirra, hendur og vængir voru alsett augum allt umhverfis á þeim fjórum.
13 En hjólin voru í mín eyru nefnd "hvirfilbylur".
14 Og hver hafði fjögur andlit. Andlit eins var nautsandlit, andlit hins annars mannsandlit, hinn þriðji hafði ljónsandlit og hinn fjórði arnarandlit.
15 Og kerúbarnir hófu sig upp. Það voru sömu verurnar, sem ég hafði séð við Kebarfljótið.
16 Og þegar kerúbarnir gengu, þá gengu og hjólin við hliðina á þeim, og þegar kerúbarnir hófu upp vængi sína til þess að lyfta sér frá jörðinni, þá snerust hjólin ekki burt frá þeim.
17 Þegar þeir stóðu kyrrir, stóðu þau og kyrr, og þegar þeir hófust upp, hófust þau og upp með þeim, því að andi verunnar var í þeim.
18 Dýrð Drottins fór nú burt af þröskuldi musterisins og nam staðar uppi á kerúbunum.
19 Þá hófu kerúbarnir upp vængi sína og lyftu sér frá jörðinni að mér ásjáandi, er þeir fóru burt, og hjólin samtímis þeim. Og þeir námu staðar úti fyrir austurhliði musteris Drottins, en dýrð Ísraels Guðs var uppi yfir þeim.
20 Það voru sömu verurnar, sem ég hafði séð undir Ísraels Guði við Kebarfljótið, og ég þekkti, að það voru kerúbar.
21 Þeir höfðu fjögur andlit og fjóra vængi hver, og undir vængjum sér eitthvað, sem líktist mannshöndum.
22 Og hvað andlitsskapnaðinn snerti, þá voru það sömu andlitin, sem ég hafði séð við Kebarfljótið; þeir gengu hver fyrir sig beint af augum fram.

Idolatry in the Temple
8 In the sixth year, in the sixth month on the fifth day, while I was sitting in my house and the elders(A) of Judah were sitting before(B) me, the hand of the Sovereign Lord came on me there.(C) 2 I looked, and I saw a figure like that of a man.[a] From what appeared to be his waist down he was like fire, and from there up his appearance was as bright as glowing metal.(D) 3 He stretched out what looked like a hand(E) and took me by the hair of my head. The Spirit lifted me up(F) between earth and heaven and in visions(G) of God he took me to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court,(H) where the idol that provokes to jealousy(I) stood. 4 And there before me was the glory(J) of the God of Israel, as in the vision I had seen in the plain.(K)
5 Then he said to me, “Son of man, look toward the north.” So I looked, and in the entrance north of the gate of the altar I saw this idol(L) of jealousy.
6 And he said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing—the utterly detestable(M) things the Israelites are doing here, things that will drive me far from my sanctuary?(N) But you will see things that are even more detestable.”
7 Then he brought me to the entrance to the court. I looked, and I saw a hole in the wall. 8 He said to me, “Son of man, now dig into the wall.” So I dug into the wall and saw a doorway there.
9 And he said to me, “Go in and see the wicked and detestable things they are doing here.” 10 So I went in and looked, and I saw portrayed all over the walls(O) all kinds of crawling things and unclean(P) animals and all the idols of Israel.(Q) 11 In front of them stood seventy elders(R) of Israel, and Jaazaniah son of Shaphan was standing among them. Each had a censer(S) in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense(T) was rising.(U)
12 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness,(V) each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, ‘The Lord does not see(W) us; the Lord has forsaken the land.’” 13 Again, he said, “You will see them doing things that are even more detestable.”
14 Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the Lord, and I saw women sitting there, mourning the god Tammuz.(X) 15 He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? You will see things that are even more detestable than this.”
16 He then brought me into the inner court(Y) of the house of the Lord, and there at the entrance to the temple, between the portico and the altar,(Z) were about twenty-five men. With their backs toward the temple of the Lord and their faces toward the east, they were bowing down to the sun(AA) in the east.(AB)
17 He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things(AC) they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence(AD) and continually arouse my anger?(AE) Look at them putting the branch to their nose! 18 Therefore I will deal with them in anger;(AF) I will not look on them with pity(AG) or spare them. Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen(AH) to them.”
Judgment on the Idolaters
9 Then I heard him call out in a loud voice, “Bring near those who are appointed to execute judgment on the city, each with a weapon in his hand.” 2 And I saw six men coming from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with a deadly weapon in his hand. With them was a man clothed in linen(AI) who had a writing kit at his side. They came in and stood beside the bronze altar.
3 Now the glory(AJ) of the God of Israel went up from above the cherubim,(AK) where it had been, and moved to the threshold of the temple. Then the Lord called to the man clothed in linen who had the writing kit at his side 4 and said to him, “Go throughout the city of Jerusalem(AL) and put a mark(AM) on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament(AN) over all the detestable things that are done in it.(AO)”
5 As I listened, he said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity(AP) or compassion.(AQ) 6 Slaughter(AR) the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children,(AS) but do not touch anyone who has the mark.(AT) Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men(AU) who were in front of the temple.(AV)
7 Then he said to them, “Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain.(AW) Go!” So they went out and began killing throughout the city. 8 While they were killing and I was left alone, I fell facedown,(AX) crying out, “Alas, Sovereign Lord!(AY) Are you going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel in this outpouring of your wrath(AZ) on Jerusalem?(BA)”
9 He answered me, “The sin of the people of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice.(BB) They say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land; the Lord does not see.’(BC) 10 So I will not look on them with pity(BD) or spare them, but I will bring down on their own heads what they have done.(BE)”
11 Then the man in linen with the writing kit at his side brought back word, saying, “I have done as you commanded.”
God’s Glory Departs From the Temple
10 I looked, and I saw the likeness of a throne(BF) of lapis lazuli(BG) above the vault(BH) that was over the heads of the cherubim.(BI) 2 The Lord said to the man clothed in linen,(BJ) “Go in among the wheels(BK) beneath the cherubim. Fill(BL) your hands with burning coals(BM) from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And as I watched, he went in.
3 Now the cherubim were standing on the south side of the temple when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court. 4 Then the glory of the Lord(BN) rose from above the cherubim and moved to the threshold of the temple. The cloud filled the temple, and the court was full of the radiance of the glory of the Lord. 5 The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far away as the outer court, like the voice(BO) of God Almighty[b] when he speaks.(BP)
6 When the Lord commanded the man in linen, “Take fire from among the wheels,(BQ) from among the cherubim,” the man went in and stood beside a wheel. 7 Then one of the cherubim reached out his hand to the fire(BR) that was among them. He took up some of it and put it into the hands of the man in linen, who took it and went out. 8 (Under the wings of the cherubim could be seen what looked like human hands.)(BS)
9 I looked, and I saw beside the cherubim four wheels, one beside each of the cherubim; the wheels sparkled like topaz.(BT) 10 As for their appearance, the four of them looked alike; each was like a wheel intersecting a wheel. 11 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the cherubim faced; the wheels did not turn about[c] as the cherubim went. The cherubim went in whatever direction the head faced, without turning as they went. 12 Their entire bodies, including their backs, their hands and their wings, were completely full of eyes,(BU) as were their four wheels.(BV) 13 I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels.” 14 Each of the cherubim(BW) had four faces:(BX) One face was that of a cherub, the second the face of a human being, the third the face of a lion,(BY) and the fourth the face of an eagle.(BZ)
15 Then the cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures(CA) I had seen by the Kebar River.(CB) 16 When the cherubim moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the cherubim spread their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not leave their side. 17 When the cherubim stood still, they also stood still; and when the cherubim rose, they rose with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in them.(CC)
18 Then the glory(CD) of the Lord departed from over the threshold of the temple and stopped above the cherubim.(CE) 19 While I watched, the cherubim spread their wings and rose from the ground, and as they went, the wheels went with them.(CF) They stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord’s house, and the glory(CG) of the God of Israel was above them.
20 These were the living creatures I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the Kebar River,(CH) and I realized that they were cherubim. 21 Each had four faces(CI) and four wings,(CJ) and under their wings was what looked like human hands. 22 Their faces had the same appearance as those I had seen by the Kebar River.(CK) Each one went straight ahead.
