16 Then Pharaoh hastily called Moses and Aaron and said, (A)“I have sinned against the Lord your God, and against you. 17 Now therefore, forgive my sin, please, only this once, and (B)plead with the Lord your God only to remove this death from me.” 18 So (C)he went out from Pharaoh and pleaded with the Lord. 19 And the Lord turned the wind into a very strong west wind, which lifted the locusts and drove them (D)into the Red Sea. Not a single locust was left in all the country of Egypt. 20 But the Lord (E)hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the people of Israel go.

The Ninth Plague: Darkness

21 Then the Lord said to Moses, (F)“Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be (G)darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness to be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was pitch darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. 23 They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days, but (H)all the people of Israel had light where they lived. 24 Then Pharaoh called Moses and said, (I)“Go, serve the Lord; (J)your little ones also may go with you; only let your flocks and your herds remain behind.” 25 But Moses said, “You must also let us have sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God. 26 Our livestock also must go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind, for we must take of them to serve the Lord our God, and we do not know with what we must serve the Lord until we arrive there.” 27 But the Lord (K)hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go. 28 Then Pharaoh said to him, “Get away from me; take care never to see my face again, for on the day you see my face you shall die.” 29 Moses said, “As you say! (L)I will not see your face again.”

16 Pharaoh quickly summoned(A) Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned(B) against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now forgive(C) my sin once more and pray(D) to the Lord your God to take this deadly plague away from me.”

18 Moses then left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord.(E) 19 And the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea.[a] Not a locust was left anywhere in Egypt. 20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart,(F) and he would not let the Israelites go.

The Plague of Darkness

21 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness(G) spreads over Egypt—darkness that can be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness(H) covered all Egypt for three days. 23 No one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.(I)

24 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, “Go,(J) worship the Lord. Even your women and children(K) may go with you; only leave your flocks and herds behind.”(L)

25 But Moses said, “You must allow us to have sacrifices and burnt offerings(M) to present to the Lord our God. 26 Our livestock too must go with us; not a hoof is to be left behind. We have to use some of them in worshiping the Lord our God, and until we get there we will not know what we are to use to worship the Lord.”

27 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart,(N) and he was not willing to let them go. 28 Pharaoh said to Moses, “Get out of my sight! Make sure you do not appear before me again! The day you see my face you will die.”

29 “Just as you say,” Moses replied. “I will never appear(O) before you again.”
