^8 (A)If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and ^(B)the truth is not in us. ^9 (C)If we confess our sins, he is ^(D)faithful and just to forgive us our sins and ^(E)to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

⁹ As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but ^(A)because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.

¹⁰ For ^(B)godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas ^(C)worldly grief produces death.
