(A)The (B)apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter. And after there had been much (C)debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, (D)that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear (E)the word of (F)the gospel and believe. And God, (G)who knows the heart, (H)bore witness to them, (I)by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, and (J)he made no distinction between us and them, (K)having cleansed their hearts (L)by faith. 10 Now, therefore, why (M)are you putting God to the test (N)by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples (O)that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11 But we (P)believe that we will be (Q)saved through (R)the grace of the Lord Jesus, (S)just as they will.”

12 And all the assembly fell silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul (T)as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles. 13 After they finished speaking, (U)James replied, “Brothers, listen to me. 14 (V)Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them (W)a people for his name. 15 And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written,

16 (X)“‘After this I will return,
and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen;
I will rebuild its ruins,
     and I will restore it,
17 that the remnant[a] of mankind (Y)may seek the Lord,
and all the Gentiles (Z)who are called by my name,
says the Lord, who makes these things 18 (AA)known from of old.’

19 Therefore (AB)my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who (AC)turn to God, 20 but should write to them (AD)to abstain from (AE)the things polluted by idols, and from (AF)sexual immorality, and from (AG)what has been strangled, and from (AH)blood. 21 For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him, (AI)for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues.”

  1. Acts 15:17 Or rest

The apostles and elders met to consider this question. After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.(A) God, who knows the heart,(B) showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them,(C) just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them,(D) for he purified their hearts by faith.(E) 10 Now then, why do you try to test God(F) by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke(G) that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? 11 No! We believe it is through the grace(H) of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”

12 The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders(I) God had done among the Gentiles through them.(J) 13 When they finished, James(K) spoke up. “Brothers,” he said, “listen to me. 14 Simon[a] has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles.(L) 15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:

16 “‘After this I will return
    and rebuild David’s fallen tent.
Its ruins I will rebuild,
    and I will restore it,
17 that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord,
even all the Gentiles who bear my name,
says the Lord, who does these things’[b](M)
18     things known from long ago.[c](N)

19 “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. 20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols,(O) from sexual immorality,(P) from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.(Q) 21 For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”(R)
