3 All night long on my bed
I looked(A) for the one my heart loves;
I looked for him but did not find him.
2 I will get up now and go about the city,
through its streets and squares;
I will search for the one my heart loves.
So I looked for him but did not find him.
3 The watchmen found me
as they made their rounds in the city.(B)
“Have you seen the one my heart loves?”
4 Scarcely had I passed them
when I found the one my heart loves.
I held him and would not let him go
till I had brought him to my mother’s house,(C)
to the room of the one who conceived me.(D)
5 Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you(E)
by the gazelles and by the does of the field:
Do not arouse or awaken love
until it so desires.(F)
6 Who is this coming up from the wilderness(G)
like a column of smoke,
perfumed with myrrh(H) and incense
made from all the spices(I) of the merchant?
7 Look! It is Solomon’s carriage,
escorted by sixty warriors,(J)
the noblest of Israel,
8 all of them wearing the sword,
all experienced in battle,
each with his sword at his side,
prepared for the terrors of the night.(K)
9 King Solomon made for himself the carriage;
he made it of wood from Lebanon.
10 Its posts he made of silver,
its base of gold.
Its seat was upholstered with purple,
its interior inlaid with love.
Daughters of Jerusalem, 11 come out,
and look, you daughters of Zion.(L)
Look[a] on King Solomon wearing a crown,
the crown with which his mother crowned him
on the day of his wedding,
the day his heart rejoiced.(M)

Oh, how beautiful!
Your eyes behind your veil(N) are doves.(O)
Your hair is like a flock of goats
descending from the hills of Gilead.(P)
2 Your teeth are like a flock of sheep just shorn,
coming up from the washing.
Each has its twin;
not one of them is alone.(Q)
3 Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon;
your mouth(R) is lovely.(S)
Your temples behind your veil
are like the halves of a pomegranate.(T)
4 Your neck is like the tower(U) of David,
built with courses of stone[b];
on it hang a thousand shields,(V)
all of them shields of warriors.
5 Your breasts(W) are like two fawns,
like twin fawns of a gazelle(X)
that browse among the lilies.(Y)
6 Until the day breaks
and the shadows flee,(Z)
I will go to the mountain of myrrh(AA)
and to the hill of incense.
7 You are altogether beautiful,(AB) my darling;
there is no flaw(AC) in you.
8 Come with me from Lebanon, my bride,(AD)
come with me from Lebanon.
Descend from the crest of Amana,
from the top of Senir,(AE) the summit of Hermon,(AF)
from the lions’ dens
and the mountain haunts of leopards.
9 You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride;(AG)
you have stolen my heart
with one glance of your eyes,
with one jewel of your necklace.(AH)
10 How delightful(AI) is your love(AJ), my sister, my bride!
How much more pleasing is your love than wine,(AK)
and the fragrance of your perfume(AL)
more than any spice!
11 Your lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb, my bride;
milk and honey are under your tongue.(AM)
The fragrance of your garments
is like the fragrance of Lebanon.(AN)
12 You are a garden(AO) locked up, my sister, my bride;(AP)
you are a spring enclosed, a sealed fountain.(AQ)
13 Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates(AR)
with choice fruits,
with henna(AS) and nard,
14 nard and saffron,
calamus and cinnamon,(AT)
with every kind of incense tree,
with myrrh(AU) and aloes(AV)
and all the finest spices.(AW)
15 You are[c] a garden(AX) fountain,(AY)
a well of flowing water
streaming down from Lebanon.

and come, south wind!
Blow on my garden,(AZ)
that its fragrance(BA) may spread everywhere.
Let my beloved(BB) come into his garden
and taste its choice fruits.(BC)

I have gathered my myrrh with my spice.
I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey;

drink your fill of love.

2 I slept but my heart was awake.
Listen! My beloved is knocking:
“Open to me, my sister, my darling,
my dove,(BG) my flawless(BH) one.(BI)
My head is drenched with dew,
my hair with the dampness of the night.”
3 I have taken off my robe—
must I put it on again?
I have washed my feet—
must I soil them again?
4 My beloved thrust his hand through the latch-opening;
my heart began to pound for him.
5 I arose to open for my beloved,
and my hands dripped with myrrh,(BJ)
my fingers with flowing myrrh,
on the handles of the bolt.
6 I opened for my beloved,(BK)
but my beloved had left; he was gone.(BL)
My heart sank at his departure.[d]
I looked(BM) for him but did not find him.
I called him but he did not answer.
7 The watchmen found me
as they made their rounds in the city.(BN)
They beat me, they bruised me;
they took away my cloak,
those watchmen of the walls!
8 Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you(BO)—
if you find my beloved,(BP)
what will you tell him?
Tell him I am faint with love.(BQ)

How is your beloved better than others,
that you so charge us?

8 Sixty queens(CS) there may be,
and eighty concubines,(CT)
and virgins beyond number;
9 but my dove,(CU) my perfect one,(CV) is unique,
the only daughter of her mother,
the favorite of the one who bore her.(CW)
The young women saw her and called her blessed;
the queens and concubines praised her.

10 Who is this that appears like the dawn,
fair as the moon, bright as the sun,
majestic as the stars in procession?

11 I went down to the grove of nut trees
to look at the new growth in the valley,
to see if the vines had budded
or the pomegranates were in bloom.(CX)
12 Before I realized it,
my desire set me among the royal chariots of my people.[e]

6 All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect,(A) so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered.(B) 2 Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers.(C) Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare[a] of their slaves.
False Teachers and the Love of Money
These are the things you are to teach and insist on.(D) 3 If anyone teaches otherwise(E) and does not agree to the sound instruction(F) of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 they are conceited(G) and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words(H) that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth(I) and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
6 But godliness with contentment(J) is great gain.(K) 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.(L) 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.(M) 9 Those who want to get rich(N) fall into temptation and a trap(O) and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money(P) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith(Q) and pierced themselves with many griefs.(R)
Final Charge to Timothy
11 But you, man of God,(S) flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,(T) faith, love,(U) endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight(V) of the faith. Take hold of(W) the eternal life(X) to which you were called when you made your good confession(Y) in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate(Z) made the good confession,(AA) I charge you(AB) 14 to keep this command without spot or blame(AC) until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,(AD) 15 which God will bring about in his own time(AE)—God, the blessed(AF) and only Ruler,(AG) the King of kings and Lord of lords,(AH) 16 who alone is immortal(AI) and who lives in unapproachable light,(AJ) whom no one has seen or can see.(AK) To him be honor and might forever. Amen.(AL)
17 Command those who are rich(AM) in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth,(AN) which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God,(AO) who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.(AP) 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds,(AQ) and to be generous and willing to share.(AR) 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves(AS) as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of(AT) the life that is truly life.
20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted(AU) to your care. Turn away from godless chatter(AV) and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.(AW)
