10 For the death he died he died to sin, (A)once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves (B)dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Let not (C)sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 (D)Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but (E)present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For (F)sin (G)will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Slaves to Righteousness

15 What then? (H)Are we to sin (I)because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves (J)to anyone as obedient slaves,[a] you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But (K)thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the (L)standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, (M)having been set free from sin, (N)have become slaves of righteousness.

  1. Romans 6:16 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface; twice in this verse; also verses 17, 19 (twice), 20

10 For [a]the death that He died, He died to sin once for all time; but [b]the life that He lives, He lives to [c]God. 11 So you too, consider yourselves to be (A)dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Therefore sin is not to (B)reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13 and do not go on (C)presenting [d]the parts of your body to sin as [e]instruments of unrighteousness; but (D)present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and [f]your body’s parts as [g]instruments of righteousness for God. 14 For (E)sin shall not (F)be master over you, for (G)you are not under [h]the Law but (H)under grace.

15 What then? (I)Are we to sin because we are not under [i]the Law but under grace? [j](J)Far from it! 16 Do you not (K)know that the one to whom you present yourselves as (L)slaves for obedience, you are slaves of that same one whom you obey, either of (M)sin [k]resulting in death, or of obedience [l]resulting in righteousness? 17 But (N)thanks be to God that [m]though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that [n](O)form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and after being (P)freed from sin, you became slaves to righteousness.
