13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,[a] that (A)I have often intended to come to you (but (B)thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some (C)harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 (D)I am under obligation both to Greeks and to (E)barbarians,[b] both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

16 For (F)I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is (G)the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew (H)first and also to (I)the Greek. 17 For in it (J)the righteousness of God is revealed (K)from faith for faith,[c] (L)as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”[d]

God's Wrath on Unrighteousness

18 For (M)the wrath of God (N)is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be (O)known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, (P)have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,[e] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they (Q)became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 (R)Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and (S)exchanged the glory of (T)the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore (U)God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to (V)the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for (W)a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, (X)who is blessed forever! Amen.

Christ the Hope of Jews and Gentiles

For I tell you that Christ (A)became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order (B)to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order (C)that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

(D)“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,
    and sing to your name.”

10 And again it is said,

(E)“Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.”

11 And again,

(F)“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and let all the peoples extol him.”

12 And again Isaiah says,

(G)(H)“The root of Jesse will come,
    even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;
(I)in him will the Gentiles hope.”

13 May the God of hope fill you with all (J)joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Paul the Minister to the Gentiles

14 (K)I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers,[a] that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with (L)all knowledge and able to instruct one another. 15 But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, (M)because of the grace given me by God 16 to be (N)a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles (O)in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that (P)the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 In Christ Jesus, then, I have (Q)reason to be proud of (R)my work for God. 18 For I will not venture to speak of anything except (S)what Christ has accomplished through me (T)to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed, 19 (U)by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that (V)from Jerusalem and all the way around (W)to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; 20 and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, (X)lest I build on someone else's foundation, 21 but as it is written,

(Y)“Those who have never been told of him will see,
and those who have never heard will understand.”
