26 (A)And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘you are not My people,’
There they shall be called sons of (B)the living God.”

27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, “(C)Though the number of the sons of Israel may be (D)like the sand of the sea, only (E)the remnant will be saved; 28 (F)for the Lord will execute His word on the earth, [a]thoroughly and [b]quickly.” 29 And just as Isaiah foretold:

(G)If (H)the Lord [c]of armies had not left us [d](I)descendants,
(J)We would have become like Sodom, and would have [e]been like Gomorrah.”

30 (K)What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, but (L)the righteousness that is [f]by faith; 31 however, Israel, (M)pursuing a law of righteousness, did not (N)arrive at that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it [g]by faith, but as though they could [h]by works. They stumbled over (O)the stumbling stone, 33 just as it is written:

(P)Behold, I am laying in Zion (Q)a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense,
(R)And the one who believes in Him (S)will not be [i]put to shame.”

The Word of Faith Brings Salvation

10 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. For I testify about them that they have (T)a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. For not knowing about (U)God’s righteousness and (V)seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. For (W)Christ is the [j]end of the Law for righteousness to (X)everyone who believes.

For Moses writes of the righteousness that is [k]based on the Law, that the person who performs [l]them (Y)will live by [m]them. But (Z)the righteousness [n]based on faith speaks as follows: “(AA)Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will go up into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), or ‘Who will descend into the (AB)abyss?’ (that is, to (AC)bring Christ up from the dead).” But what does it say? “(AD)The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching,

“In the very place where it was said to them,

there they will be called ‘children of the living God.’”[a](A)

“Unless the Lord Almighty(E)

Israel’s Unbelief

30 What then shall we say?(G) That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;(H) 31 but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness,(I) have not attained their goal.(J) 32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.(K) 33 As it is written:

“See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall,
and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[d](L)

10 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire(M) and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous(N) for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.(O) Christ is the culmination of the law(P) so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.(Q)

Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”[e](R) But the righteousness that is by faith(S) says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”[f](T) (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’”[g](U) (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).(V) But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”[h](W) that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim:
