12 Therefore sin is not to (A)reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13 and do not go on (B)presenting [a]the parts of your body to sin as [b]instruments of unrighteousness; but (C)present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and [c]your body’s parts as [d]instruments of righteousness for God. 14 For (D)sin shall not (E)be master over you, for (F)you are not under [e]the Law but (G)under grace.

15 What then? (H)Are we to sin because we are not under [f]the Law but under grace? [g](I)Far from it! 16 Do you not (J)know that the one to whom you present yourselves as (K)slaves for obedience, you are slaves of that same one whom you obey, either of (L)sin [h]resulting in death, or of obedience [i]resulting in righteousness? 17 But (M)thanks be to God that [j]though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that [k](N)form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and after being (O)freed from sin, you became slaves to righteousness. 19 (P)I am speaking [l]in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just (Q)as you presented [m]the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, [n]resulting in further lawlessness, so now present [o]your body’s parts as slaves to righteousness, [p]resulting in sanctification.

20 For (R)when you were slaves of sin, you were free in relation to righteousness. 21 Therefore what [q](S)benefit were you then [r]deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is (T)death. 22 But now having been (U)freed from sin and (V)enslaved to God, you [s]derive your [t](W)benefit, [u]resulting in sanctification, and (X)the outcome, eternal life. 23 For the wages of (Y)sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is (Z)eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Believers United to Christ

Or do you not know, (AA)brothers and sisters (for I am speaking to those who know the [v]Law), that the [w]Law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? For (AB)the married woman is bound by law to her [x]husband as long as he is alive; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law [y]concerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is alive she [z]gives herself to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress if she [aa]gives herself to another man.

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you also were (AC)put to death (AD)in regard to the Law (AE)through the body of Christ, so that you might belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For while we were (AF)in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were (AG)brought to light by the Law, were at work (AH)in [ab]the parts of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been (AI)released from the Law, having (AJ)died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in (AK)newness of (AL)the [ac]Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

(AM)What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? (AN)[ad]Far from it! On the contrary, (AO)I would not have come to know sin except [ae]through the Law; for I would not have known about [af]coveting if the Law had not said, “(AP)You shall not [ag]covet.” But sin, (AQ)taking an opportunity (AR)through the commandment, produced in me [ah]coveting of every kind; for (AS)apart [ai]from the Law sin is dead. I was once alive apart [aj]from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin came to life, and I died; 10 and this commandment, which was [ak](AT)to result in life, proved [al]to result in death for me; 11 for sin, (AU)taking an opportunity (AV)through the commandment, (AW)deceived me, and through it, killed me. 12 (AX)So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? [am](AY)Far from it! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by bringing about my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.

The Conflict of Serving Two Masters

14 For we know that the Law is (AZ)spiritual, but I am (BA)fleshly, (BB)sold [an](BC)into bondage to sin. 15 For (BD)I do not understand what I am doing; for I am not practicing (BE)what I want to do, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 However, if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with (BF)the Law, that the Law is good. 17 But now, (BG)no longer am I the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my (BH)flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For (BI)the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I do the very thing I do not want, (BJ)I am no longer the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 I find then (BK)the [ao]principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully agree with the law of God [ap]in (BL)the inner person, 23 but I see (BM)a different law in [aq]the parts of my body waging war against the (BN)law of my mind, and making me a prisoner [ar]of (BO)the law of sin, the law which is in [as]my body’s parts. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from [at](BP)the body of this (BQ)death? 25 (BR)Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh (BS)the law of sin.
