El justo juicio de Dios

Por lo cual eres inexcusable, oh hombre, quienquiera que seas tú que juzgas; pues en lo que juzgas a otro, te condenas a ti mismo;(A) porque tú que juzgas haces lo mismo. Mas sabemos que el juicio de Dios contra los que practican tales cosas es según verdad. ¿Y piensas esto, oh hombre, tú que juzgas a los que tal hacen, y haces lo mismo, que tú escaparás del juicio de Dios? ¿O menosprecias las riquezas de su benignidad, paciencia y longanimidad, ignorando que su benignidad te guía al arrepentimiento? Pero por tu dureza y por tu corazón no arrepentido, atesoras para ti mismo ira para el día de la ira y de la revelación del justo juicio de Dios, el cual pagará a cada uno conforme a sus obras:(B) vida eterna a los que, perseverando en bien hacer, buscan gloria y honra e inmortalidad, pero ira y enojo a los que son contenciosos y no obedecen a la verdad, sino que obedecen a la injusticia; tribulación y angustia sobre todo ser humano que hace lo malo, el judío primeramente y también el griego, 10 pero gloria y honra y paz a todo el que hace lo bueno, al judío primeramente y también al griego; 11 porque no hay acepción de personas para con Dios.(C)

12 Porque todos los que sin ley han pecado, sin ley también perecerán; y todos los que bajo la ley han pecado, por la ley serán juzgados; 13 porque no son los oidores de la ley los justos ante Dios, sino los hacedores de la ley serán justificados. 14 Porque cuando los gentiles que no tienen ley, hacen por naturaleza lo que es de la ley, estos, aunque no tengan ley, son ley para sí mismos, 15 mostrando la obra de la ley escrita en sus corazones, dando testimonio su conciencia, y acusándoles o defendiéndoles sus razonamientos, 16 en el día en que Dios juzgará por Jesucristo los secretos de los hombres, conforme a mi evangelio.

Los judíos y la ley

17 He aquí, tú tienes el sobrenombre de judío, y te apoyas en la ley, y te glorías en Dios, 18 y conoces su voluntad, e instruido por la ley apruebas lo mejor, 19 y confías en que eres guía de los ciegos, luz de los que están en tinieblas, 20 instructor de los indoctos, maestro de niños, que tienes en la ley la forma de la ciencia y de la verdad. 21 Tú, pues, que enseñas a otro, ¿no te enseñas a ti mismo? Tú que predicas que no se ha de hurtar, ¿hurtas? 22 Tú que dices que no se ha de adulterar, ¿adulteras? Tú que abominas de los ídolos, ¿cometes sacrilegio? 23 Tú que te jactas de la ley, ¿con infracción de la ley deshonras a Dios? 24 Porque como está escrito, el nombre de Dios es blasfemado entre los gentiles por causa de vosotros.(D)

25 Pues en verdad la circuncisión aprovecha, si guardas la ley; pero si eres transgresor de la ley, tu circuncisión viene a ser incircuncisión. 26 Si, pues, el incircunciso guardare las ordenanzas de la ley, ¿no será tenida su incircuncisión como circuncisión? 27 Y el que físicamente es incircunciso, pero guarda perfectamente la ley, te condenará a ti, que con la letra de la ley y con la circuncisión eres transgresor de la ley. 28 Pues no es judío el que lo es exteriormente, ni es la circuncisión la que se hace exteriormente en la carne; 29 sino que es judío el que lo es en lo interior, y la circuncisión es la del corazón, en espíritu, no en letra; la alabanza del cual no viene de los hombres, sino de Dios.

¿Qué ventaja tiene, pues, el judío? ¿o de qué aprovecha la circuncisión? Mucho, en todas maneras. Primero, ciertamente, que les ha sido confiada la palabra de Dios. ¿Pues qué, si algunos de ellos han sido incrédulos? ¿Su incredulidad habrá hecho nula la fidelidad de Dios? De ninguna manera; antes bien sea Dios veraz, y todo hombre mentiroso; como está escrito:

Para que seas justificado en tus palabras,

Y venzas cuando fueres juzgado.(E)

Y si nuestra injusticia hace resaltar la justicia de Dios, ¿qué diremos? ¿Será injusto Dios que da castigo? (Hablo como hombre.) En ninguna manera; de otro modo, ¿cómo juzgaría Dios al mundo? Pero si por mi mentira la verdad de Dios abundó para su gloria, ¿por qué aún soy juzgado como pecador? ¿Y por qué no decir (como se nos calumnia, y como algunos, cuya condenación es justa, afirman que nosotros decimos): Hagamos males para que vengan bienes?

No hay justo

¿Qué, pues? ¿Somos nosotros mejores que ellos? En ninguna manera; pues ya hemos acusado a judíos y a gentiles, que todos están bajo pecado. 10 Como está escrito:

No hay justo, ni aun uno;

11 No hay quien entienda,

No hay quien busque a Dios.

12 Todos se desviaron, a una se hicieron inútiles;

No hay quien haga lo bueno, no hay ni siquiera uno.(F)

13 Sepulcro abierto es su garganta;

Con su lengua engañan.(G)

Veneno de áspides hay debajo de sus labios;(H)

14 Su boca está llena de maldición y de amargura.(I)

15 Sus pies se apresuran para derramar sangre;

16 Quebranto y desventura hay en sus caminos;

17 Y no conocieron camino de paz.(J)

18 No hay temor de Dios delante de sus ojos.(K)

19 Pero sabemos que todo lo que la ley dice, lo dice a los que están bajo la ley, para que toda boca se cierre y todo el mundo quede bajo el juicio de Dios; 20 ya que por las obras de la ley ningún ser humano será justificado delante de él;(L) porque por medio de la ley es el conocimiento del pecado.

La justicia es por medio de la fe

21 Pero ahora, aparte de la ley, se ha manifestado la justicia de Dios, testificada por la ley y por los profetas; 22 la justicia de Dios por medio de la fe en Jesucristo,(M) para todos los que creen en él. Porque no hay diferencia, 23 por cuanto todos pecaron, y están destituidos de la gloria de Dios, 24 siendo justificados gratuitamente por su gracia, mediante la redención que es en Cristo Jesús, 25 a quien Dios puso como propiciación por medio de la fe en su sangre, para manifestar su justicia, a causa de haber pasado por alto, en su paciencia, los pecados pasados, 26 con la mira de manifestar en este tiempo su justicia, a fin de que él sea el justo, y el que justifica al que es de la fe de Jesús.

27 ¿Dónde, pues, está la jactancia? Queda excluida. ¿Por cuál ley? ¿Por la de las obras? No, sino por la ley de la fe. 28 Concluimos, pues, que el hombre es justificado por fe sin las obras de la ley. 29 ¿Es Dios solamente Dios de los judíos? ¿No es también Dios de los gentiles? Ciertamente, también de los gentiles. 30 Porque Dios es uno, y él justificará por la fe a los de la circuncisión, y por medio de la fe a los de la incircuncisión. 31 ¿Luego por la fe invalidamos la ley? En ninguna manera, sino que confirmamos la ley.

El ejemplo de Abraham

¿Qué, pues, diremos que halló Abraham, nuestro padre según la carne? Porque si Abraham fue justificado por las obras, tiene de qué gloriarse, pero no para con Dios. Porque ¿qué dice la Escritura? Creyó Abraham a Dios, y le fue contado por justicia.(N) Pero al que obra, no se le cuenta el salario como gracia, sino como deuda; mas al que no obra, sino cree en aquel que justifica al impío, su fe le es contada por justicia. Como también David habla de la bienaventuranza del hombre a quien Dios atribuye justicia sin obras, diciendo:

Bienaventurados aquellos cuyas iniquidades son perdonadas,

Y cuyos pecados son cubiertos.

Bienaventurado el varón a quien el Señor no inculpa de pecado.(O)

¿Es, pues, esta bienaventuranza solamente para los de la circuncisión, o también para los de la incircuncisión? Porque decimos que a Abraham le fue contada la fe por justicia. 10 ¿Cómo, pues, le fue contada? ¿Estando en la circuncisión, o en la incircuncisión? No en la circuncisión, sino en la incircuncisión. 11 Y recibió la circuncisión(P) como señal, como sello de la justicia de la fe que tuvo estando aún incircunciso; para que fuese padre de todos los creyentes no circuncidados, a fin de que también a ellos la fe les sea contada por justicia; 12 y padre de la circuncisión, para los que no solamente son de la circuncisión, sino que también siguen las pisadas de la fe que tuvo nuestro padre Abraham antes de ser circuncidado.

La promesa realizada mediante la fe

13 Porque no por la ley fue dada a Abraham o a su descendencia la promesa de que sería heredero del mundo,(Q) sino por la justicia de la fe. 14 Porque si los que son de la ley son los herederos, vana resulta la fe, y anulada la promesa.(R) 15 Pues la ley produce ira; pero donde no hay ley, tampoco hay transgresión.

16 Por tanto, es por fe, para que sea por gracia, a fin de que la promesa sea firme para toda su descendencia; no solamente para la que es de la ley, sino también para la que es de la fe de Abraham, el cual es padre de todos nosotros(S) 17 (como está escrito: Te he puesto por padre de muchas gentes(T)) delante de Dios, a quien creyó, el cual da vida a los muertos, y llama las cosas que no son, como si fuesen. 18 Él creyó en esperanza contra esperanza, para llegar a ser padre de muchas gentes, conforme a lo que se le había dicho: Así será tu descendencia.(U) 19 Y no se debilitó en la fe al considerar su cuerpo, que estaba ya como muerto (siendo de casi cien años(V)), o la esterilidad de la matriz de Sara. 20 Tampoco dudó, por incredulidad, de la promesa de Dios, sino que se fortaleció en fe, dando gloria a Dios, 21 plenamente convencido de que era también poderoso para hacer todo lo que había prometido; 22 por lo cual también su fe le fue contada por justicia. 23 Y no solamente con respecto a él se escribió que le fue contada, 24 sino también con respecto a nosotros a quienes ha de ser contada, esto es, a los que creemos en el que levantó de los muertos a Jesús, Señor nuestro, 25 el cual fue entregado por nuestras transgresiones, y resucitado para nuestra justificación.

The Impartiality of God

Therefore you have (A)no excuse, [a]you foolish person, (B)everyone of you who passes judgment; for [b]in that matter in which (C)you judge someone else, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God [c]rightly falls upon those who practice such things. But do you suppose this, [d](D)you foolish person who passes judgment on those who practice such things, and yet does them as well, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you think lightly of (E)the riches of His (F)kindness and [e](G)restraint and (H)patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? But [f]because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart (I)you are storing up wrath for yourself (J)on the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, (K)who will repay each person according to his deeds: to those who by (L)perseverance in doing good seek (M)glory, honor, and (N)immortality, He will give (O)eternal life; but to those who are (P)self-serving and (Q)do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, He will give wrath and indignation. There will be (R)tribulation and distress [g]for every soul of mankind who does evil, [h]for the Jew (S)first and also [i]for the Greek, 10 but (T)glory, honor, and peace to everyone who does what is good, to the Jew (U)first and also to the Greek. 11 For (V)there is no partiality with God.

12 For all who have sinned [j](W)without the Law will also perish [k]without the Law, and all who have sinned [l]under the Law will be judged [m]by the Law; 13 for it is (X)not the hearers [n]of the Law who are [o]righteous before God, but the doers [p]of the Law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles who do not have [q]the Law [r](Y)instinctively perform the requirements of the Law, these, though not having [s]the Law, are a law to themselves, 15 in that they show (Z)the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, 16 on the day when, (AA)according to my gospel, (AB)God will judge the secrets of mankind through Christ Jesus.

The Jews under the Law

17 But if you call yourself a [t]Jew and (AC)rely [u]upon the Law and boast in God, 18 and know His will and [v](AD)distinguish the things that matter, being instructed from the Law, 19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to people who are blind, a light to those in darkness, 20 a [w]corrector of the foolish, a teacher of [x]the immature, possessing in the Law (AE)the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth— 21 you, therefore, (AF)who teach someone else, do you not teach yourself? You who [y]preach that one is not to steal, do you steal? 22 You who say that one is not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who loathe idols, do you (AG)rob temples? 23 You who (AH)boast [z]in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God? 24 For “(AI)the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles (AJ)because of you,” just as it is written.

25 For indeed circumcision is of value if you (AK)practice [aa]the Law; but if you are a violator [ab]of the Law, (AL)your circumcision has turned into uncircumcision. 26 (AM)So if (AN)the [ac]uncircumcised man (AO)keeps the requirements of the Law, will his uncircumcision not be regarded as circumcision? 27 And (AP)he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not (AQ)judge you who [ad]though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a violator [ae]of the Law? 28 For (AR)he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. 29 But (AS)he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and (AT)circumcision is of the heart, by the (AU)Spirit, not by the letter; (AV)and his praise is not from people, but from God.

All the World Guilty

Then what [af]advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Great in every respect. First, that (AW)they were entrusted with the (AX)actual words of God. What then? If (AY)some [ag]did not believe, their [ah]unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? [ai](AZ)Far from it! Rather, God must prove to be true, though every person be found (BA)a liar, as it is written:

(BB)So that You are justified in Your words,
And prevail [aj]when You are judged.”

But if our unrighteousness [ak](BC)demonstrates the righteousness of God, (BD)what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? ((BE)I am speaking from a human viewpoint.) (BF)Far from it! For otherwise, how will (BG)God judge the world? But if through my lie (BH)the truth of God abounded to His glory, (BI)why am I also still being judged as a sinner? And why not say (just as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), “(BJ)Let’s do evil that good may come of it”? [al]Their condemnation is deserved.

What then? [am](BK)Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both (BL)Jews and (BM)Greeks are (BN)all under sin; 10 as it is written:

(BO)There is no righteous person, not even one;
11 There is no one who understands,
There is no one who seeks out God;
12 They have all turned aside, together they have become [an]corrupt;
There is no one who does good,
There is not even one.”
13 (BP)Their throat is an open grave,
With their tongues they keep deceiving,”
(BQ)The venom of [ao]asps is under their lips”;
14 (BR)Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”;
15 (BS)Their feet are swift to shed blood,
16 Destruction and misery are in their paths,
17 And they have not known the way of peace.”
18 (BT)There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19 Now we know that whatever the (BU)Law says, it speaks to (BV)those who are [ap]under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and (BW)all the world may become accountable to God; 20 because (BX)by the works [aq]of the Law [ar]none of mankind will be justified in His sight; for [as](BY)through the Law comes [at]knowledge of sin.

Justification by Faith

21 But now apart [au]from the Law (BZ)the righteousness of God has been revealed, being (CA)witnessed by the [av]Law and the Prophets, 22 but it is the (CB)righteousness of God through (CC)faith (CD)in Jesus Christ for (CE)all those [aw]who believe; for (CF)there is no distinction, 23 for all [ax](CG)have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift (CH)by His grace through (CI)the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God displayed publicly as (CJ)a [ay]propitiation [az](CK)in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, [ba]because in God’s merciful (CL)restraint He (CM)let the sins previously committed go unpunished; 26 for the demonstration, that is, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who [bb]has faith in Jesus.

27 Where then is (CN)boasting? It has been excluded. By (CO)what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 [bc]For (CP)we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from works [bd]of the Law. 29 Or (CQ)is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed (CR)God (CS)who will justify the [be]circumcised [bf]by faith and the [bg]uncircumcised through faith (CT)is one.

31 Do we then nullify [bh]the Law through faith? (CU)Far from it! On the contrary, we (CV)establish the Law.

Abraham’s Justification by Faith

What then shall we say that Abraham, [bi]our forefather (CW)according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified [bj]by works, he has something to boast about; but (CX)not [bk]before God. For what does the Scripture say? “(CY)Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who (CZ)works, the wages are not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but (DA)believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

(DB)Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven,
And whose sins have been covered.
(DC)Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not (DD)take into account.”

Is this blessing then on [bl](DE)the circumcised, or on [bm]the uncircumcised also? For (DF)we say, “(DG)Faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.” 10 How then was it credited? While he was [bn]circumcised, or [bo]uncircumcised? Not while [bp]circumcised, but while [bq]uncircumcised; 11 and he (DH)received the sign of circumcision, (DI)a seal of the righteousness of the faith which [br]he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be (DJ)the father of (DK)all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which [bs]he had while uncircumcised.

13 For (DL)the promise to Abraham or to his [bt]descendants (DM)that he would be heir of the world was not [bu]through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For (DN)if those who are [bv]of the Law are heirs, then faith is made void and the promise is nullified; 15 for (DO)the Law brings about wrath, but (DP)where there is no law, there also is no violation.

16 For this reason it is [bw]by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with (DQ)grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to (DR)all the [bx]descendants, not only to [by]those who are of the Law, but also to [bz](DS)those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is (DT)the father of us all, 17 (as it is written: “I have made you (DU)a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, that is, God, (DV)who gives life to the dead and (DW)calls into being (DX)things that do not exist. 18 In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become (DY)a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “(DZ)So shall your [ca]descendants be.” 19 Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now (EA)as good as dead since (EB)he was about a hundred years old, and (EC)the deadness of Sarah’s womb; 20 yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, (ED)giving glory to God, 21 and (EE)being fully assured that (EF)what God had promised, He was able also to perform. 22 Therefore (EG)it was also credited to him as righteousness. 23 Now (EH)not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, 24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, to us (EI)who believe in Him who (EJ)raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 He who was (EK)delivered over because of our wrongdoings, and was (EL)raised because of our justification.

God’s Righteous Judgment

You, therefore, have no excuse,(A) you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.(B) Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches(C) of his kindness,(D) forbearance(E) and patience,(F) not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?(G)

But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath(H), when his righteous judgment(I) will be revealed. God “will repay each person according to what they have done.”[a](J) To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor(K) and immortality,(L) he will give eternal life.(M) But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil,(N) there will be wrath and anger.(O) There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil:(P) first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;(Q) 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.(R) 11 For God does not show favoritism.(S)

12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law(T) will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey(U) the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law,(V) they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets(W) through Jesus Christ,(X) as my gospel(Y) declares.

The Jews and the Law

17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God;(Z) 18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; 19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?(AA) 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?(AB) 23 You who boast in the law,(AC) do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24 As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”[b](AD)

25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law,(AE) but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised.(AF) 26 So then, if those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements,(AG) will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised?(AH) 27 The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you(AI) who, even though you have the[c] written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.

28 A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly,(AJ) nor is circumcision merely outward and physical.(AK) 29 No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart,(AL) by the Spirit,(AM) not by the written code.(AN) Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.(AO)

God’s Faithfulness

What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? Much in every way!(AP) First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God.(AQ)

What if some were unfaithful?(AR) Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness?(AS) Not at all! Let God be true,(AT) and every human being a liar.(AU) As it is written:

“So that you may be proved right when you speak
    and prevail when you judge.”[d](AV)

But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly,(AW) what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.)(AX) Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world?(AY) Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases his glory,(AZ) why am I still condemned as a sinner?”(BA) Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”?(BB) Their condemnation is just!

No One Is Righteous

What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage?(BC) Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.(BD) 10 As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;
11     there is no one who understands;
    there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away,
    they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
    not even one.”[e](BE)
13 “Their throats are open graves;
    their tongues practice deceit.”[f](BF)
“The poison of vipers is on their lips.”[g](BG)
14     “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”[h](BH)
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16     ruin and misery mark their ways,
17 and the way of peace they do not know.”[i](BI)
18     “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”[j](BJ)

19 Now we know that whatever the law says,(BK) it says to those who are under the law,(BL) so that every mouth may be silenced(BM) and the whole world held accountable to God.(BN) 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;(BO) rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.(BP)

Righteousness Through Faith

21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God(BQ) has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.(BR) 22 This righteousness(BS) is given through faith(BT) in[k] Jesus Christ(BU) to all who believe.(BV) There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,(BW) 23 for all have sinned(BX) and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified(BY) freely by his grace(BZ) through the redemption(CA) that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,[l](CB) through the shedding of his blood(CC)—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished(CD) 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

27 Where, then, is boasting?(CE) It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.(CF) 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too,(CG) 30 since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.(CH) 31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.

Abraham Justified by Faith

What then shall we say(CI) that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh,(CJ) discovered in this matter? If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God.(CK) What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[m](CL)

Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift(CM) but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.(CN) David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

“Blessed are those
    whose transgressions are forgiven,
    whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the one
    whose sin the Lord will never count against them.”[n](CO)

Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised?(CP) We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness.(CQ) 10 Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before! 11 And he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised.(CR) So then, he is the father(CS) of all who believe(CT) but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. 12 And he is then also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

13 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise(CU) that he would be heir of the world,(CV) but through the righteousness that comes by faith.(CW) 14 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless,(CX) 15 because the law brings wrath.(CY) And where there is no law there is no transgression.(CZ)

16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace(DA) and may be guaranteed(DB) to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.(DC) 17 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.”[o](DD) He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life(DE) to the dead and calls(DF) into being things that were not.(DG)

18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations,(DH) just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”[p](DI) 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead(DJ)—since he was about a hundred years old(DK)—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead.(DL) 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened(DM) in his faith and gave glory to God,(DN) 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.(DO) 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”(DP) 23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us,(DQ) to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him(DR) who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.(DS) 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins(DT) and was raised to life for our justification.(DU)
