El remanente de Israel

11 Digo, pues: ¿Ha desechado Dios a su pueblo? En ninguna manera. Porque también yo soy israelita, de la descendencia de Abraham, de la tribu de Benjamín.(A) No ha desechado Dios a su pueblo, al cual desde antes conoció. ¿O no sabéis qué dice de Elías la Escritura, cómo invoca a Dios contra Israel, diciendo: Señor, a tus profetas han dado muerte, y tus altares han derribado; y sólo yo he quedado, y procuran matarme?(B) Pero ¿qué le dice la divina respuesta? Me he reservado siete mil hombres, que no han doblado la rodilla delante de Baal.(C) Así también aun en este tiempo ha quedado un remanente escogido por gracia. Y si por gracia, ya no es por obras; de otra manera la gracia ya no es gracia. Y si por obras, ya no es gracia; de otra manera la obra ya no es obra.

¿Qué pues? Lo que buscaba Israel, no lo ha alcanzado; pero los escogidos sí lo han alcanzado, y los demás fueron endurecidos; como está escrito: Dios les dio espíritu de estupor, ojos con que no vean y oídos con que no oigan, hasta el día de hoy.(D) Y David dice:

Sea vuelto su convite en trampa y en red,

En tropezadero y en retribución;

10 Sean oscurecidos sus ojos para que no vean,

Y agóbiales la espalda para siempre.(E)

La salvación de los gentiles

11 Digo, pues: ¿Han tropezado los de Israel para que cayesen? En ninguna manera; pero por su transgresión vino la salvación a los gentiles, para provocarles a celos. 12 Y si su transgresión es la riqueza del mundo, y su defección la riqueza de los gentiles, ¿cuánto más su plena restauración?

13 Porque a vosotros hablo, gentiles. Por cuanto yo soy apóstol a los gentiles, honro mi ministerio, 14 por si en alguna manera pueda provocar a celos a los de mi sangre, y hacer salvos a algunos de ellos. 15 Porque si su exclusión es la reconciliación del mundo, ¿qué será su admisión, sino vida de entre los muertos? 16 Si las primicias son santas, también lo es la masa restante; y si la raíz es santa, también lo son las ramas.

17 Pues si algunas de las ramas fueron desgajadas, y tú, siendo olivo silvestre, has sido injertado en lugar de ellas, y has sido hecho participante de la raíz y de la rica savia del olivo, 18 no te jactes contra las ramas; y si te jactas, sabe que no sustentas tú a la raíz, sino la raíz a ti. 19 Pues las ramas, dirás, fueron desgajadas para que yo fuese injertado. 20 Bien; por su incredulidad fueron desgajadas, pero tú por la fe estás en pie. No te ensoberbezcas, sino teme. 21 Porque si Dios no perdonó a las ramas naturales, a ti tampoco te perdonará. 22 Mira, pues, la bondad y la severidad de Dios; la severidad ciertamente para con los que cayeron, pero la bondad para contigo, si permaneces en esa bondad; pues de otra manera tú también serás cortado. 23 Y aun ellos, si no permanecieren en incredulidad, serán injertados, pues poderoso es Dios para volverlos a injertar. 24 Porque si tú fuiste cortado del que por naturaleza es olivo silvestre, y contra naturaleza fuiste injertado en el buen olivo, ¿cuánto más estos, que son las ramas naturales, serán injertados en su propio olivo?

La restauración de Israel

25 Porque no quiero, hermanos, que ignoréis este misterio, para que no seáis arrogantes en cuanto a vosotros mismos: que ha acontecido a Israel endurecimiento en parte, hasta que haya entrado la plenitud de los gentiles; 26 y luego todo Israel será salvo, como está escrito:

Vendrá de Sion el Libertador,

Que apartará de Jacob la impiedad.(F)

27 Y este será mi pacto con ellos,

Cuando yo quite sus pecados.(G)

28 Así que en cuanto al evangelio, son enemigos por causa de vosotros; pero en cuanto a la elección, son amados por causa de los padres. 29 Porque irrevocables son los dones y el llamamiento de Dios. 30 Pues como vosotros también en otro tiempo erais desobedientes a Dios, pero ahora habéis alcanzado misericordia por la desobediencia de ellos, 31 así también estos ahora han sido desobedientes, para que por la misericordia concedida a vosotros, ellos también alcancen misericordia. 32 Porque Dios sujetó a todos en desobediencia, para tener misericordia de todos.

33 ¡Oh profundidad de las riquezas de la sabiduría y de la ciencia de Dios! ¡Cuán insondables son sus juicios, e inescrutables sus caminos! 34 Porque ¿quién entendió la mente del Señor? ¿O quién fue su consejero?(H) 35 ¿O quién le dio a él primero, para que le fuese recompensado?(I) 36 Porque de él, y por él, y para él, son todas las cosas. A él sea la gloria por los siglos. Amén.

Deberes cristianos

12 Así que, hermanos, os ruego por las misericordias de Dios, que presentéis vuestros cuerpos en sacrificio vivo, santo, agradable a Dios, que es vuestro culto racional. No os conforméis a este siglo, sino transformaos por medio de la renovación de vuestro entendimiento, para que comprobéis cuál sea la buena voluntad de Dios, agradable y perfecta.

Digo, pues, por la gracia que me es dada, a cada cual que está entre vosotros, que no tenga más alto concepto de sí que el que debe tener, sino que piense de sí con cordura, conforme a la medida de fe que Dios repartió a cada uno. Porque de la manera que en un cuerpo tenemos muchos miembros, pero no todos los miembros tienen la misma función, así nosotros, siendo muchos, somos un cuerpo en Cristo,(J) y todos miembros los unos de los otros. De manera que, teniendo diferentes dones, según la gracia que nos es dada,(K) si el de profecía, úsese conforme a la medida de la fe; o si de servicio, en servir; o el que enseña, en la enseñanza; el que exhorta, en la exhortación; el que reparte, con liberalidad; el que preside, con solicitud; el que hace misericordia, con alegría.

El amor sea sin fingimiento. Aborreced lo malo, seguid lo bueno. 10 Amaos los unos a los otros con amor fraternal; en cuanto a honra, prefiriéndoos los unos a los otros. 11 En lo que requiere diligencia, no perezosos; fervientes en espíritu, sirviendo al Señor; 12 gozosos en la esperanza; sufridos en la tribulación; constantes en la oración; 13 compartiendo para las necesidades de los santos; practicando la hospitalidad.

14 Bendecid a los que os persiguen;(L) bendecid, y no maldigáis. 15 Gozaos con los que se gozan; llorad con los que lloran. 16 Unánimes entre vosotros; no altivos, sino asociándoos con los humildes. No seáis sabios en vuestra propia opinión.(M) 17 No paguéis a nadie mal por mal; procurad lo bueno delante de todos los hombres. 18 Si es posible, en cuanto dependa de vosotros, estad en paz con todos los hombres. 19 No os venguéis vosotros mismos, amados míos, sino dejad lugar a la ira de Dios; porque escrito está: Mía es la venganza, yo pagaré, dice el Señor.(N) 20 Así que, si tu enemigo tuviere hambre, dale de comer; si tuviere sed, dale de beber; pues haciendo esto, ascuas de fuego amontonarás sobre su cabeza.(O) 21 No seas vencido de lo malo, sino vence con el bien el mal.

13 Sométase toda persona a las autoridades superiores; porque no hay autoridad sino de parte de Dios, y las que hay, por Dios han sido establecidas. De modo que quien se opone a la autoridad, a lo establecido por Dios resiste; y los que resisten, acarrean condenación para sí mismos. Porque los magistrados no están para infundir temor al que hace el bien, sino al malo. ¿Quieres, pues, no temer la autoridad? Haz lo bueno, y tendrás alabanza de ella; porque es servidor de Dios para tu bien. Pero si haces lo malo, teme; porque no en vano lleva la espada, pues es servidor de Dios, vengador para castigar al que hace lo malo. Por lo cual es necesario estarle sujetos, no solamente por razón del castigo, sino también por causa de la conciencia. Pues por esto pagáis también los tributos, porque son servidores de Dios que atienden continuamente a esto mismo. Pagad a todos lo que debéis: al que tributo, tributo; al que impuesto, impuesto; al que respeto, respeto; al que honra, honra.(P)

No debáis a nadie nada, sino el amaros unos a otros; porque el que ama al prójimo, ha cumplido la ley. Porque: No adulterarás,(Q) no matarás,(R) no hurtarás,(S) no dirás falso testimonio,(T) no codiciarás,(U) y cualquier otro mandamiento, en esta sentencia se resume: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.(V) 10 El amor no hace mal al prójimo; así que el cumplimiento de la ley es el amor.

11 Y esto, conociendo el tiempo, que es ya hora de levantarnos del sueño; porque ahora está más cerca de nosotros nuestra salvación que cuando creímos. 12 La noche está avanzada, y se acerca el día. Desechemos, pues, las obras de las tinieblas, y vistámonos las armas de la luz. 13 Andemos como de día, honestamente; no en glotonerías y borracheras, no en lujurias y lascivias, no en contiendas y envidia, 14 sino vestíos del Señor Jesucristo, y no proveáis para los deseos de la carne.

Los débiles en la fe

14 Recibid al débil en la fe, pero no para contender sobre opiniones. Porque uno cree que se ha de comer de todo; otro, que es débil, come legumbres. El que come, no menosprecie al que no come, y el que no come, no juzgue al que come; porque Dios le ha recibido. ¿Tú quién eres, que juzgas al criado ajeno? Para su propio señor está en pie, o cae; pero estará firme, porque poderoso es el Señor para hacerle estar firme.

Uno hace diferencia entre día y día; otro juzga iguales todos los días. Cada uno esté plenamente convencido en su propia mente. El que hace caso del día, lo hace para el Señor; y el que no hace caso del día, para el Señor no lo hace. El que come, para el Señor come, porque da gracias a Dios; y el que no come, para el Señor no come, y da gracias a Dios.(W) Porque ninguno de nosotros vive para sí, y ninguno muere para sí. Pues si vivimos, para el Señor vivimos; y si morimos, para el Señor morimos. Así pues, sea que vivamos, o que muramos, del Señor somos. Porque Cristo para esto murió y resucitó, y volvió a vivir, para ser Señor así de los muertos como de los que viven.

10 Pero tú, ¿por qué juzgas a tu hermano? O tú también, ¿por qué menosprecias a tu hermano? Porque todos compareceremos ante el tribunal de Cristo.(X) 11 Porque escrito está:

Vivo yo, dice el Señor, que ante mí se doblará toda rodilla,

Y toda lengua confesará a Dios.(Y)

12 De manera que cada uno de nosotros dará a Dios cuenta de sí.

13 Así que, ya no nos juzguemos más los unos a los otros, sino más bien decidid no poner tropiezo u ocasión de caer al hermano. 14 Yo sé, y confío en el Señor Jesús, que nada es inmundo en sí mismo; mas para el que piensa que algo es inmundo, para él lo es. 15 Pero si por causa de la comida tu hermano es contristado, ya no andas conforme al amor. No hagas que por la comida tuya se pierda aquel por quien Cristo murió. 16 No sea, pues, vituperado vuestro bien; 17 porque el reino de Dios no es comida ni bebida, sino justicia, paz y gozo en el Espíritu Santo. 18 Porque el que en esto sirve a Cristo, agrada a Dios, y es aprobado por los hombres. 19 Así que, sigamos lo que contribuye a la paz y a la mutua edificación. 20 No destruyas la obra de Dios por causa de la comida. Todas las cosas a la verdad son limpias; pero es malo que el hombre haga tropezar a otros con lo que come. 21 Bueno es no comer carne, ni beber vino, ni nada en que tu hermano tropiece, o se ofenda, o se debilite. 22 ¿Tienes tú fe? Israel Has Not Been Rejected

11 I say then, God has not (A)rejected His people, has He? [a](B)Far from it! For (C)I too am an Israelite, [b]a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God (D)has not rejected His people whom He (E)foreknew. (F)Or do you not know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? “Lord, (G)they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” But what [c]is the divine response to him? “(H)I have kept for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time (I)a remnant according to God’s [d]gracious choice. But (J)if it is by grace, it is no longer [e]on the basis of works, since otherwise grace is no longer grace.

What then? What (K)Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but [f]those who were chosen obtained it, and the rest were (L)hardened; just as it is written:

(M)God gave them a spirit of stupor,
Eyes to see not and ears to hear not,
Down to this very day.”

And David says,

(N)May their table become a snare and a trap,
And a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
10 (O)May their eyes be darkened to see not,
And bend their backs continually.”

11 (P)I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? [g](Q)Far from it! But by their wrongdoing (R)salvation has come to the Gentiles, to (S)make them jealous. 12 Now if their wrongdoing proves to be riches for the world, and their failure, riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their [h](T)fulfillment be! 13 But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Therefore insofar as (U)I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry 14 if somehow I may (V)move (W)my [i]own people to jealousy and (X)save some of them. 15 For if their rejection proves to be the (Y)reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but (Z)life from the dead? 16 If the (AA)first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are as well.

17 But if some of the (AB)branches were broken off, and (AC)you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the [j]rich root of the olive tree, 18 do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that (AD)it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. 19 (AE)You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you (AF)stand by your faith. (AG)Do not be conceited, but fear; 21 for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either. 22 See then the kindness and severity of God: to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s (AH)kindness, (AI)if you continue in His kindness; for otherwise you too (AJ)will be cut off. 23 And they also, (AK)if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?

25 For (AL)I do not want you, brothers and sisters, to be uninformed of this (AM)mystery—so that you will not be (AN)wise in your own estimation—that a partial (AO)hardening has happened to Israel until the (AP)fullness of the Gentiles has come in; 26 and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written:

(AQ)The Deliverer will come from Zion,
He will remove ungodliness from Jacob.”
27 (AR)This is [k]My covenant with them,
(AS)When I take away their sins.”

28 In relation to the gospel they are (AT)enemies on your account, but in relation to God’s choice they are beloved (AU)on account of the fathers; 29 for the gifts and the (AV)calling of God (AW)are irrevocable. 30 For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. 32 For (AX)God has shut up all in disobedience, so that He may show mercy to all.

33 Oh, the depth of (AY)the riches, [l]both of the (AZ)wisdom and knowledge of God! (BA)How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! 34 For (BB)who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor? 35 Or (BC)who has first given to Him, [m]that it would be paid back to him? 36 For (BD)from Him, and through Him, and to Him are all things. (BE)To Him be the glory [n]forever. Amen.

Dedicated Service

12 Therefore (BF)I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to (BG)present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, [o]acceptable to God, which is your [p]spiritual service of worship. And do not (BH)be conformed to (BI)this [q]world, but be transformed by the (BJ)renewing of your mind, so that you may [r](BK)prove what the will of God is, that which is good and [s]acceptable and perfect.

For through (BL)the grace given to me I say to everyone among you (BM)not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to (BN)each a measure of faith. For (BO)just as we have many parts in one body and all [t]the body’s parts do not have the same function, so we, (BP)who are many, are (BQ)one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another. However, since we have gifts that (BR)differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to use them properly: if (BS)prophecy, [u]in proportion to one’s faith; if [v](BT)service, in the act of serving; or the one who (BU)teaches, in the act of teaching; or the one who [w](BV)exhorts, in the work of [x]exhortation; the one who gives, with [y](BW)generosity; (BX)the one who [z]is in leadership, with diligence; the one who shows mercy, with (BY)cheerfulness.

[aa](BZ)Love must be free of hypocrisy. (CA)Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be (CB)devoted to one another in brotherly love; [ab]give preference to one another (CC)in honor, 11 not lagging behind in diligence, (CD)fervent in spirit, (CE)serving the Lord; 12 (CF)rejoicing in hope, (CG)persevering in tribulation, (CH)devoted to prayer, 13 (CI)contributing to the needs of the [ac]saints, [ad](CJ)practicing hospitality.

14 (CK)Bless those who persecute [ae]you; bless and do not curse. 15 (CL)Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 (CM)Be of the same mind toward one another; (CN)do not be [af]haughty in mind, but [ag]associate with the lowly. (CO)Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 (CP)Never repay evil for evil to anyone. [ah](CQ)Respect what is right in the sight of all people. 18 If possible, (CR)so far as it depends on you, (CS)be at peace with all people. 19 (CT)Never take your own revenge, beloved, but [ai]leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: “(CU)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 (CV)But if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Be Subject to Government

13 Every [aj](CW)person is to be (CX)subject to the governing authorities. For (CY)there is no authority except [ak]from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore [al]whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For (CZ)rulers are not a cause of fear for [am]good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a servant of God, an (DA)avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also (DB)for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. (DC)Pay to all what is due them: (DD)tax to whom tax is due; (DE)custom to whom custom; [an]respect to whom [ao]respect; honor to whom honor.

Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for (DF)the one who loves [ap]his neighbor has fulfilled the Law. For this, “(DG)You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “(DH)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love [aq]does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore (DI)love is the fulfillment of the Law.

11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is (DJ)already the hour for you to (DK)awaken from sleep; for now [ar]salvation is nearer to us than when we first believed. 12 (DL)The night is almost gone, and (DM)the day is near. Therefore let’s rid ourselves of (DN)the deeds of darkness and put on (DO)the armor of light. 13 Let’s [as](DP)behave properly as in the day, (DQ)not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and debauchery, not in strife and jealousy. 14 But (DR)put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh (DS)in regard to its lusts.

Principles of Conscience

14 Now (DT)accept the one who is (DU)weak [at]in faith, but not [au]to have quarrels over opinions. (DV)One person has faith that he may eat all things, but the one who is (DW)weak eats only vegetables. The one who eats is not to (DX)regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to (DY)judge the one who eats, for God has (DZ)accepted him. (EA)Who are you to judge the [av]servant of another? To his own [aw]master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

(EB)One person [ax]values one day over another, another [ay]values every day the same. Each person must be (EC)fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and the one who eats, [az]does so with regard to the Lord, for he (ED)gives thanks to God; and the one who does not eat, it is for the Lord that he does not eat, and he gives thanks to God. For not one of us (EE)lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore (EF)whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end (EG)Christ died and lived again, that He might be (EH)Lord both of the dead and of the living.

10 But as for you, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or you as well, why do you (EI)regard your brother or sister with contempt? For (EJ)we will all appear before the judgment seat of God. 11 For it is written:

(EK)As I live, says the Lord, (EL)to Me every knee will bow,
And every tongue will [ba]give praise to God.”

12 So then (EM)each one of us will give an account of himself to God.

13 Therefore let’s not (EN)judge one another anymore, but rather [bb]determine this: (EO)not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s or sister’s way. 14 I know and am convinced [bc]in the Lord Jesus that (EP)nothing is [bd]unclean in itself; but to the one who (EQ)thinks something is [be]unclean, to that person it is [bf]unclean. 15 For if because of food your brother or sister is hurt, you are no longer (ER)walking in accordance with love. (ES)Do not destroy with your choice of food that person for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore (ET)do not let what is for you a good thing be [bg]spoken of as evil; 17 for the kingdom of God (EU)is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and (EV)peace and (EW)joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For the one who (EX)serves Christ in this way is (EY)acceptable to God and approved by other people. 19 So then we (EZ)pursue the things [bh]which make for peace and the (FA)building up of one another. 20 (FB)Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. (FC)All things indeed are clean, but (FD)they are evil for the person who eats [bi]and causes offense. 21 (FE)It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother or sister stumbles. 22 The faith which you have, have [bj]as your own conviction before God. Happy is the one who (FF)does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But (FG)the one who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.

The Remnant of Israel

11 I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means!(A) I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham,(B) from the tribe of Benjamin.(C) God did not reject his people,(D) whom he foreknew.(E) Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel: “Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me”[a]?(F) And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”[b](G) So too, at the present time there is a remnant(H) chosen by grace.(I) And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works;(J) if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain.(K) The elect among them did, but the others were hardened,(L) as it is written:

“God gave them a spirit of stupor,
    eyes that could not see
    and ears that could not hear,(M)
to this very day.”[c](N)

And David says:

“May their table become a snare and a trap,
    a stumbling block and a retribution for them.
10 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,(O)
    and their backs be bent forever.”[d](P)

Ingrafted Branches

11 Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all!(Q) Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles(R) to make Israel envious.(S) 12 But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles,(T) how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!

13 I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles,(U) I take pride in my ministry 14 in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy(V) and save(W) some of them. 15 For if their rejection brought reconciliation(X) to the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?(Y) 16 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits(Z) is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches.

17 If some of the branches have been broken off,(AA) and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others(AB) and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, 18 do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.(AC) 19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” 20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith.(AD) Do not be arrogant,(AE) but tremble.(AF) 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

22 Consider therefore the kindness(AG) and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue(AH) in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.(AI) 23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.(AJ) 24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree,(AK) how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

All Israel Will Be Saved

25 I do not want you to be ignorant(AL) of this mystery,(AM) brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited:(AN) Israel has experienced a hardening(AO) in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in,(AP) 26 and in this way[e] all Israel will be saved.(AQ) As it is written:

“The deliverer will come from Zion;
    he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
27 And this is[f] my covenant with them
    when I take away their sins.”[g](AR)

28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies(AS) for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs,(AT) 29 for God’s gifts and his call(AU) are irrevocable.(AV) 30 Just as you who were at one time disobedient(AW) to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now[h] receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32 For God has bound everyone over to disobedience(AX) so that he may have mercy on them all.

Doxology

33 Oh, the depth of the riches(AY) of the wisdom and[i] knowledge of God!(AZ)
    How unsearchable his judgments,
    and his paths beyond tracing out!(BA)
34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord?
    Or who has been his counselor?”[j](BB)
35 “Who has ever given to God,
    that God should repay them?”[k](BC)
36 For from him and through him and for him are all things.(BD)
    To him be the glory forever! Amen.(BE)

A Living Sacrifice

12 Therefore, I urge you,(BF) brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,(BG) holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform(BH) to the pattern of this world,(BI) but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.(BJ) Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is(BK)—his good, pleasing(BL) and perfect will.

Humble Service in the Body of Christ

For by the grace given me(BM) I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,(BN) so in Christ we, though many, form one body,(BO) and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts,(BP) according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying,(BQ) then prophesy in accordance with your[l] faith;(BR) if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;(BS) if it is to encourage, then give encouragement;(BT) if it is giving, then give generously;(BU) if it is to lead,[m] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Love in Action

Love must be sincere.(BV) Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.(BW) 10 Be devoted to one another in love.(BX) Honor one another above yourselves.(BY) 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor,(BZ) serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope,(CA) patient in affliction,(CB) faithful in prayer.(CC) 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.(CD) Practice hospitality.(CE)

14 Bless those who persecute you;(CF) bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.(CG) 16 Live in harmony with one another.(CH) Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[n] Do not be conceited.(CI)

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil.(CJ) Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.(CK) 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.(CL) 19 Do not take revenge,(CM) my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[o](CN) says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
    if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[p](CO)

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Submission to Governing Authorities

13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities,(CP) for there is no authority except that which God has established.(CQ) The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted,(CR) and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.(CS) For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.(CT) Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.(CU)

This is also why you pay taxes,(CV) for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes;(CW) if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Love Fulfills the Law

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.(CX) The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,”[q](CY) and whatever other command there may be, are summed up(CZ) in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[r](DA) 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.(DB)

The Day Is Near

11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come(DC) for you to wake up from your slumber,(DD) because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.(DE) So let us put aside the deeds of darkness(DF) and put on the armor(DG) of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness,(DH) not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.(DI) 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ,(DJ) and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.[s](DK)

The Weak and the Strong

14 Accept the one whose faith is weak,(DL) without quarreling over disputable matters. One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.(DM) The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt(DN) the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge(DO) the one who does, for God has accepted them. Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?(DP) To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

One person considers one day more sacred than another;(DQ) another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God;(DR) and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives for ourselves alone,(DS) and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.(DT) For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life(DU) so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.(DV)

10 You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister[t]? Or why do you treat them with contempt?(DW) For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.(DX) 11 It is written:

“‘As surely as I live,’(DY) says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me;
    every tongue will acknowledge God.’”[u](DZ)

12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.(EA)

13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment(EB) on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.(EC) 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself.(ED) But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.(EE) 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love.(EF) Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died.(EG) 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil.(EH) 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking,(EI) but of righteousness, peace(EJ) and joy in the Holy Spirit,(EK) 18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.(EL)

19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace(EM) and to mutual edification.(EN) 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food.(EO) All food is clean,(EP) but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble.(EQ) 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.(ER)

22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn(ES) himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts(ET) is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.[v]
