The Scroll with Seven Seals
5 I saw [a]in the right hand of Him who (A)sat on the throne a [b](B)scroll written inside and on the back, (C)sealed up with seven seals. 2 And I saw a (D)strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to break its seals?” 3 And no one (E)in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it. 4 Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5 And one of the elders *said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the (F)Lion that is (G)from the tribe of Judah, the (H)Root of David, has overcome so as to be able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
6 And I saw [c]between the throne (with the four living creatures) and (I)the elders a (J)Lamb standing, as if (K)slaughtered, having seven (L)horns and (M)seven eyes, which are [d](N)the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 And He came and took (O)the scroll out of the right hand of Him who (P)sat on the throne. 8 When He had taken the scroll, the (Q)four living creatures and the (R)twenty-four elders (S)fell down before the (T)Lamb, each one holding a (U)harp and (V)golden bowls full of incense, which are the (W)prayers of the [e]saints. 9 And they *sang a (X)new song, saying,
“(Y)Worthy are You to take the scroll and to break its seals; for You were (Z)slaughtered, and You (AA)purchased people for God with Your blood from (AB)every tribe, language, people, and nation.
10 You have made them into a (AC)kingdom and (AD)priests to our God, and they will (AE)reign upon the earth.”
Angels Exalt the Lamb
11 Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels (AF)around the throne and the (AG)living creatures and the (AH)elders; and the number of them was [f](AI)myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice,
“(AJ)Worthy is the (AK)Lamb that was (AL)slaughtered to receive power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory, and blessing.”
13 And I heard (AM)every created thing which is in heaven, or on the earth, or under the earth, or on the sea, and all the things in them, saying,
“To Him who (AN)sits on the throne and to the (AO)Lamb (AP)be the blessing, the honor, the glory, and the dominion forever and ever.”
14 And the (AQ)four living creatures were saying, “(AR)Amen.” And the (AS)elders (AT)fell down and worshiped.
The First Seal: Conqueror on a White Horse
6 Then I saw when the (AU)Lamb broke one of the (AV)seven seals, and I heard one of the (AW)four living creatures saying as with a (AX)voice of thunder, “Come[g]!” 2 I looked, and behold, a (AY)white horse, and the one who sat on it had a bow; and (AZ)a crown was given to him, and he went out (BA)conquering and to conquer.
The Second Seal: War
3 When He broke the second seal, I heard the (BB)second living creature saying, “Come[h]!” 4 And another, (BC)a red horse, went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to (BD)take peace from the earth, and that people would kill one another; and a large sword was given to him.
The Third Seal: Famine
5 When He broke the third seal, I heard the (BE)third living creature saying, “Come[i]!” I looked, and behold, a (BF)black horse, and the one who sat on it had a (BG)pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard something like a voice in the center of the (BH)four living creatures saying, “A [j]quart of wheat for a [k]denarius, and three [l]quarts of barley for a [m]denarius; and (BI)do not damage the oil and the wine.”
The Fourth Seal: Death
7 When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the (BJ)fourth living creature saying, “Come[n]!” 8 I looked, and behold, [o]an (BK)ashen horse; and the one who sat on it had the name (BL)Death, and (BM)Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, (BN)to kill with sword, and famine, and [p]plague, and by the wild animals of the earth.
The Fifth Seal: Martyrs
9 When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw (BO)underneath the (BP)altar the (BQ)souls of those who had been killed (BR)because of the word of God, and because of the (BS)testimony which they had maintained; 10 and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “(BT)How long, O [q](BU)Lord, (BV)holy and true, [r]will You refrain from (BW)judging and avenging our blood on (BX)those who live on the earth?” 11 And a (BY)white robe was given to each of them; and they were told that they were to (BZ)rest for a little while longer, (CA)until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers and sisters who were to be killed even as they had been, was (CB)completed also.
The Sixth Seal: Terror
12 And I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great (CC)earthquake; and the (CD)sun became as black as (CE)sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; 13 and (CF)the stars of the sky fell to the earth, (CG)as a fig tree drops its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. 14 (CH)The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and (CI)every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then (CJ)the kings of the earth and the eminent people, and the commanders and the wealthy and the strong, and every slave and free person hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; 16 and they *(CK)said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the [s]sight of Him (CL)who sits on the throne, and from the (CM)wrath of the Lamb; 17 for (CN)the great day of Their wrath has come, and (CO)who is able to stand?”
An Interlude
7 After this I saw (CP)four angels standing at the (CQ)four corners of the earth, holding back (CR)the four winds of the earth (CS)so that no wind would blow on the earth, or on the sea, or on any tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascending (CT)from the rising of the sun, holding the (CU)seal of (CV)the living God; and he called out with a loud voice to the (CW)four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, 3 saying, “(CX)Do not harm the earth, or the sea, or the trees until we have (CY)sealed the bond-servants of our God on their (CZ)foreheads.”
The 144,000
4 And I heard the (DA)number of those who were sealed: (DB)144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:
5 from the tribe of Judah, twelve thousand were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, from the tribe of Gad twelve thousand, 6 from the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, from the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand, from the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand, 7 from the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand, from the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, from the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand, 8 from the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand, from the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand, and from the tribe of Benjamin, twelve thousand were sealed.
A Multitude from the Tribulation
9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from (DC)every nation and all the tribes, peoples, and languages, standing (DD)before the throne and (DE)before the Lamb, clothed in (DF)white robes, and (DG)palm branches were in their hands; 10 and they *cried out with a loud voice, saying,
11 And all the angels were standing (DJ)around the throne and around (DK)the elders and the (DL)four living creatures; and they (DM)fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying,
“(DN)Amen, (DO)blessing, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might belong to our God forever and ever. (DP)Amen.”
13 Then one of the elders (DQ)responded, saying to me, “These who are clothed in the (DR)white robes, who are they, and where have they come from?” 14 I [t]said to him, “My lord, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the (DS)great tribulation, and they have (DT)washed their robes and made them (DU)white in the (DV)blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason they are (DW)before the throne of God, and they (DX)serve Him day and night in His [u](DY)temple; and (DZ)He who sits on the throne will spread His (EA)tabernacle over them. 16 (EB)They will no longer hunger nor thirst, nor will the sun [v]beat down on them, nor any scorching heat; 17 for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their (EC)shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the [w](ED)water of life; and (EE)God will wipe every tear from their eyes.”
The Seventh Seal: Trumpets
8 When the Lamb broke the (EF)seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2 And I saw (EG)the seven angels who stand before God, and seven (EH)trumpets were given to them.
3 (EI)Another angel came and stood at the (EJ)altar, holding a (EK)golden censer; and much (EL)incense was given to him, so that he might [x]add it to the (EM)prayers of all the [y]saints on the (EN)golden altar which was before the throne. 4 And (EO)the smoke of the incense ascended from the angel’s hand with the prayers of the [z]saints before God. 5 Then the angel [aa]took the [ab]censer and (EP)filled it with the fire of the altar, and (EQ)hurled it to the earth; and there were (ER)peals of thunder and sounds, and flashes of lightning and an (ES)earthquake.
6 (ET)And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound them.
7 The first sounded, and there was (EU)hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled to the earth; and (EV)a third of the earth was burned up, and (EW)a third of the (EX)trees were burned up, and all the green (EY)grass was burned up.
8 The second angel sounded, and something like a great (EZ)mountain burning with fire was hurled into the sea; and (FA)a third of the (FB)sea became blood, 9 and (FC)a third of the creatures which were in the sea [ac]and had life, died; and a third of the (FD)ships were destroyed.
10 The third angel sounded, and a great star (FE)fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a (FF)third of the rivers and on the (FG)springs of waters. 11 The star is named Wormwood; and a (FH)third of the waters became (FI)wormwood, and many people died from the waters because they were made bitter.
12 The fourth angel sounded, and a (FJ)third of the (FK)sun, a third of the (FL)moon, and a (FM)third of the (FN)stars were struck, so that a (FO)third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a (FP)third of it, and the night in the same way.
13 Then I looked, and I heard [ad]an eagle flying in (FQ)midheaven, saying with a loud voice, “(FR)Woe, woe, woe to (FS)those who live on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the (FT)three angels who are about to sound!”
The Fifth Trumpet: Shaft of the Abyss
9 Then the (FU)fifth angel sounded, and I saw a (FV)star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the (FW)key to the (FX)shaft of the abyss was given to him. 2 He opened the shaft of the abyss, and (FY)smoke ascended out of the shaft like the smoke of a great furnace; and (FZ)the sun and the air were darkened from the smoke of the shaft. 3 Then out of the smoke came (GA)locusts [ae]upon the earth, and power was given them, as the (GB)scorpions of the earth have power. 4 They were told not to (GC)hurt the (GD)grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the people who do not have the (GE)seal of God on their foreheads. 5 And [af]they were not permitted to kill [ag]anyone, but to torment for (GF)five months; and their torment was like the torment of a (GG)scorpion when it [ah]stings a person. 6 And in those days (GH)people will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death [ai]will flee from them!
7 The [aj](GI)appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like human faces. 8 They had hair like the hair of women, and their (GJ)teeth were like the teeth of lions. 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the (GK)sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. 10 They have tails like (GL)scorpions, and stings; and in their (GM)tails is their power to hurt people for (GN)five months. 11 They have as king over them, the angel of the (GO)abyss; his name in (GP)Hebrew is [ak](GQ)Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name [al]Apollyon.
12 (GR)The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still coming after these things.
The Sixth Trumpet: Army from the East
13 Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard [am]a voice from the [an]four (GS)horns of the (GT)golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the (GU)four angels who are bound at the (GV)great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were (GW)released, so that they would kill a (GX)third of mankind. 16 The number of the armies of the horsemen was (GY)two hundred million; (GZ)I heard the number of them. 17 And this is how I saw (HA)in my vision the horses and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire, of hyacinth, and of [ao](HB)brimstone; and the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and (HC)out of their mouths *came fire and smoke and [ap](HD)brimstone. 18 A (HE)third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the (HF)fire, the smoke, and the [aq]brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm.
20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, (HG)did not repent of (HH)the works of their hands so as not to (HI)worship demons and (HJ)the idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; 21 and they (HK)did not repent of their murders, nor of their (HL)witchcraft, nor of their (HM)sexual immorality, nor of their thefts.

The Scroll and the Lamb
5 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne(A) a scroll with writing on both sides(B) and sealed(C) with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel(D) proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion(E) of the tribe of Judah,(F) the Root of David,(G) has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
6 Then I saw a Lamb,(H) looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures(I) and the elders.(J) The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes,(K) which are the seven spirits[a](L) of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.(M) 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures(N) and the twenty-four elders(O) fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp(P) and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers(Q) of God’s people. 9 And they sang a new song, saying:(R)
“You are worthy(S) to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood(T) you purchased(U) for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.(V)
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests(W) to serve our God,
and they will reign[b] on the earth.”(X)
11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand.(Y) They encircled the throne and the living creatures(Z) and the elders.(AA) 12 In a loud voice they were saying:
“Worthy is the Lamb,(AB) who was slain,(AC)
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”(AD)
13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth(AE) and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:
“To him who sits on the throne(AF) and to the Lamb(AG)
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”(AH)
14 The four living creatures(AI) said, “Amen,”(AJ) and the elders(AK) fell down and worshiped.(AL)
The Seals
6 I watched as the Lamb(AM) opened the first of the seven seals.(AN) Then I heard one of the four living creatures(AO) say in a voice like thunder,(AP) “Come!” 2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse!(AQ) Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown,(AR) and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.(AS)
3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature(AT) say, “Come!” 4 Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.(AU) Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth(AV) and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.
5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature(AW) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse!(AX) Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures,(AY) saying, “Two pounds[c] of wheat for a day’s wages,[d] and six pounds[e] of barley for a day’s wages,[f](AZ) and do not damage(BA) the oil and the wine!”
7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature(BB) say, “Come!” 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!(BC) Its rider was named Death, and Hades(BD) was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.(BE)
9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under(BF) the altar(BG) the souls of those who had been slain(BH) because of the word of God(BI) and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long,(BJ) Sovereign Lord,(BK) holy and true,(BL) until you judge the inhabitants of the earth(BM) and avenge our blood?”(BN) 11 Then each of them was given a white robe,(BO) and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[g] were killed just as they had been.(BP)
12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake.(BQ) The sun turned black(BR) like sackcloth(BS) made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth,(BT) as figs drop from a fig tree(BU) when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up,(BV) and every mountain and island was removed from its place.(BW)
15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free,(BX) hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.(BY) 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us(BZ) and hide us[h] from the face of him who sits on the throne(CA) and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day(CB) of their[i] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”(CC)
144,000 Sealed
7 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners(CD) of the earth, holding back the four winds(CE) of the earth to prevent(CF) any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree. 2 Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal(CG) of the living God.(CH) He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea:(CI) 3 “Do not harm(CJ) the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads(CK) of the servants of our God.” 4 Then I heard the number(CL) of those who were sealed: 144,000(CM) from all the tribes of Israel.
5 From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed,
from the tribe of Reuben 12,000,
from the tribe of Gad 12,000,
6 from the tribe of Asher 12,000,
from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000,
from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000,
7 from the tribe of Simeon 12,000,
from the tribe of Levi 12,000,
from the tribe of Issachar 12,000,
8 from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000,
from the tribe of Joseph 12,000,
from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000.
The Great Multitude in White Robes
9 After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language,(CN) standing before the throne(CO) and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes(CP) and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice:
11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders(CS) and the four living creatures.(CT) They fell down on their faces(CU) before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying:
“Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!”(CV)
13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes(CW)—who are they, and where did they come from?”
14 I answered, “Sir, you know.”
And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes(CX) and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.(CY) 15 Therefore,
“they are before the throne of God(CZ)
and serve him(DA) day and night in his temple;(DB)
and he who sits on the throne(DC)
will shelter them with his presence.(DD)
16 ‘Never again will they hunger;
never again will they thirst.(DE)
The sun will not beat down on them,’[j]
nor any scorching heat.(DF)
17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne
will be their shepherd;(DG)
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’[k](DH)
‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’[l]”(DI)
The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer
8 When he opened the seventh seal,(DJ) there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.
2 And I saw the seven angels(DK) who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.(DL)
3 Another angel,(DM) who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people,(DN) on the golden altar(DO) in front of the throne. 4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God(DP) from the angel’s hand. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar,(DQ) and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder,(DR) rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.(DS)
The Trumpets
6 Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets(DT) prepared to sound them.
7 The first angel(DU) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire(DV) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third(DW) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.(DX)
8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain,(DY) all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third(DZ) of the sea turned into blood,(EA) 9 a third(EB) of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.
10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky(EC) on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water(ED)— 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[m] A third(EE) of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.(EF)
12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third(EG) of them turned dark.(EH) A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.(EI)
13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair(EJ) call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe(EK) to the inhabitants of the earth,(EL) because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”
9 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth.(EM) The star was given the key(EN) to the shaft of the Abyss.(EO) 2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.(EP) The sun and sky were darkened(EQ) by the smoke from the Abyss.(ER) 3 And out of the smoke locusts(ES) came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions(ET) of the earth. 4 They were told not to harm(EU) the grass of the earth or any plant or tree,(EV) but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.(EW) 5 They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months.(EX) And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion(EY) when it strikes. 6 During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.(EZ)
7 The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle.(FA) On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces.(FB) 8 Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth.(FC) 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.(FD) 10 They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.(FE) 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss,(FF) whose name in Hebrew(FG) is Abaddon(FH) and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).
12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.(FI)
13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns(FJ) of the golden altar that is before God.(FK) 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels(FL) who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”(FM) 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released(FN) to kill a third(FO) of mankind.(FP) 16 The number of the mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard their number.(FQ)
17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths(FR) came fire, smoke and sulfur.(FS) 18 A third(FT) of mankind was killed(FU) by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur(FV) that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.
20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent(FW) of the work of their hands;(FX) they did not stop worshiping demons,(FY) and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.(FZ) 21 Nor did they repent(GA) of their murders, their magic arts,(GB) their sexual immorality(GC) or their thefts.
