Preparation for the Bowl Judgments

15 Then I saw another great and awe-inspiring sign[a] in heaven:(A) seven angels with the seven last plagues, for with them, God’s wrath will be completed.(B) I also saw something like a sea of glass(C) mixed with fire, and those who had won the victory over the beast, his image,[b] and the number of his name, were standing on the sea of glass with harps from God.[c](D) They sang the song of God’s servant Moses(E) and the song of the Lamb:

Great and awe-inspiring are Your works,
Lord God, the Almighty;
righteous and true are Your ways,
King of the Nations.[d]
Lord, who will not fear
and glorify Your name?
Because You alone are holy,
for all the nations will come
and worship before You
because Your righteous acts
have been revealed.

After this I looked, and the heavenly sanctuary—the tabernacle of testimony(F)—was opened.(G) Out of the sanctuary came the seven angels with the seven plagues, dressed in clean, bright linen, with gold sashes wrapped around their chests. One of the four living creatures gave the seven angels seven gold bowls filled with the wrath of God who lives forever and ever. Then the sanctuary was filled with smoke from God’s glory and from His power,(H) and no one could enter the sanctuary until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

The First Bowl

16 Then I heard a loud voice from the sanctuary saying to the seven angels, “Go and pour out the seven[e] bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.” The first went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and severely painful sores[f](I) broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.

The Second Bowl

The second[g] poured out his bowl into the sea. It turned to blood like a dead man’s, and all life[h] in the sea died.(J)

The Third Bowl

The third[i] poured out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they became blood.(K) I heard the angel of the waters say:

You are righteous,
who is and who was,(L) the Holy One,
for You have decided these things.
Because they poured out
the blood of the saints and the prophets,
You also gave them blood to drink;
they deserve it!(M)

Then I heard someone from the altar say:

Yes, Lord God, the Almighty,
true and righteous are Your judgments.(N)

The Fourth Bowl

The fourth[j] poured out his bowl on the sun. He[k] was given the power[l] to burn people with fire, and people were burned by the intense heat. So they blasphemed the name of God,(O) who had the power[m] over these plagues, and they did not repent and give Him glory.

The Fifth Bowl

10 The fifth[n] poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast,(P) and his kingdom was plunged into darkness.(Q) People[o] gnawed their tongues because of their pain 11 and blasphemed the God of heaven(R) because of their pains and their sores, yet they did not repent of their actions.

The Sixth Bowl

12 The sixth[p] poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates,(S) and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the east. 13 Then I saw three unclean spirits like frogs(T) coming from the dragon’s mouth,(U) from the beast’s mouth,(V) and from the mouth of the false prophet.(W) 14 For they are spirits of demons performing signs,(X) who travel to the kings of the whole world to assemble them for the battle of the great day of God, the Almighty.(Y)

15 “Look, I am coming like a thief. The one who is alert and remains clothed[q](Z) so that he may not go around naked and people see his shame(AA) is blessed.”(AB)

16 So they assembled them at the place called in Hebrew, Armagedon.[r][s](AC)

The Seventh Bowl

17 Then the seventh[t] poured out his bowl into the air,[u] and a loud voice came out of the sanctuary[v](AD) from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18 There were flashes of lightning and rumblings of thunder. And a severe earthquake occurred like no other since man has been on the earth—so great was the quake.(AE) 19 The great city(AF) split into three parts, and the cities of the nations[w] fell. Babylon the Great was remembered in God’s presence; He gave her the cup filled with the wine of His fierce anger.(AG) 20 Every island fled, and the mountains disappeared.[x](AH) 21 Enormous hailstones, each weighing about 100 pounds,[y] fell from the sky on people, and they blasphemed God(AI) for the plague of hail because that plague was extremely severe.(AJ)

Seven Angels With Seven Plagues

15 I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign:(A) seven angels(B) with the seven last plagues(C)—last, because with them God’s wrath is completed. And I saw what looked like a sea of glass(D) glowing with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious(E) over the beast(F) and its image(G) and over the number of its name.(H) They held harps(I) given them by God and sang the song of God’s servant(J) Moses(K) and of the Lamb:(L)

“Great and marvelous are your deeds,(M)
    Lord God Almighty.(N)
Just and true are your ways,(O)
    King of the nations.[a]
Who will not fear you, Lord,(P)
and bring glory to your name?(Q)
For you alone are holy.
All nations will come
    and worship before you,(R)
for your righteous acts(S) have been revealed.”[b]

After this I looked, and I saw in heaven the temple(T)—that is, the tabernacle of the covenant law(U)—and it was opened.(V) Out of the temple(W) came the seven angels with the seven plagues.(X) They were dressed in clean, shining linen(Y) and wore golden sashes around their chests.(Z) Then one of the four living creatures(AA) gave to the seven angels(AB) seven golden bowls filled with the wrath of God, who lives for ever and ever.(AC) And the temple was filled with smoke(AD) from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the temple(AE) until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

The Seven Bowls of God’s Wrath

16 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple(AF) saying to the seven angels,(AG) “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.”(AH)

The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land,(AI) and ugly, festering sores(AJ) broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.(AK)

The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead person, and every living thing in the sea died.(AL)

The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water,(AM) and they became blood.(AN) Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say:

“You are just in these judgments,(AO) O Holy One,(AP)
you who are and who were;(AQ)
for they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets,(AR)
and you have given them blood to drink(AS) as they deserve.”

And I heard the altar(AT) respond:

“Yes, Lord God Almighty,(AU)
true and just are your judgments.”(AV)

The fourth angel(AW) poured out his bowl on the sun,(AX) and the sun was allowed to scorch people with fire.(AY) They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God,(AZ) who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent(BA) and glorify him.(BB)

10 The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast,(BC) and its kingdom was plunged into darkness.(BD) People gnawed their tongues in agony 11 and cursed(BE) the God of heaven(BF) because of their pains and their sores,(BG) but they refused to repent of what they had done.(BH)

12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates,(BI) and its water was dried up to prepare the way(BJ) for the kings from the East.(BK) 13 Then I saw three impure spirits(BL) that looked like frogs;(BM) they came out of the mouth of the dragon,(BN) out of the mouth of the beast(BO) and out of the mouth of the false prophet.(BP) 14 They are demonic spirits(BQ) that perform signs,(BR) and they go out to the kings of the whole world,(BS) to gather them for the battle(BT) on the great day(BU) of God Almighty.

15 “Look, I come like a thief!(BV) Blessed is the one who stays awake(BW) and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.”(BX)

16 Then they gathered the kings together(BY) to the place that in Hebrew(BZ) is called Armageddon.(CA)

17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air,(CB) and out of the temple(CC) came a loud voice(CD) from the throne, saying, “It is done!”(CE) 18 Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder(CF) and a severe earthquake.(CG) No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth,(CH) so tremendous was the quake. 19 The great city(CI) split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered(CJ) Babylon the Great(CK) and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath.(CL) 20 Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.(CM) 21 From the sky huge hailstones,(CN) each weighing about a hundred pounds,[c] fell on people.
