God the Rock of Salvation

71 In (A)You, O Lord, I put my trust;
Let me never be put to shame.
(B)Deliver me in Your righteousness, and cause me to escape;
(C)Incline Your ear to me, and save me.
(D)Be my [a]strong refuge,
To which I may resort continually;
You have given the (E)commandment to save me,
For You are my rock and my fortress.

(F)Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked,
Out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.
For You are (G)my hope, O Lord God;
You are my trust from my youth.
(H)By You I have been [b]upheld from birth;
You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb.
My praise shall be continually of You.

(I)I have become as a wonder to many,
But You are my strong refuge.
Let (J)my mouth be filled with Your praise
And with Your glory all the day.

Do not cast me off in the time of old age;
Do not forsake me when my strength fails.
10 For my enemies speak against me;
And those who lie in wait for my life (K)take counsel together,
11 Saying, “God has forsaken him;
Pursue and take him, for there is none to deliver him.

12 (L)O God, do not be far from me;
O my God, (M)make haste to help me!
13 Let them be [c]confounded and consumed
Who are adversaries of my life;
Let them be covered with reproach and dishonor
Who seek my hurt.

14 But I will hope continually,
And will praise You yet more and more.
15 My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness
And Your salvation all the day,
For I do not know their limits.
16 I will go in the strength of the Lord God;
I will make mention of Your righteousness, of Yours only.

17 O God, You have taught me from my (N)youth;
And to this day I declare Your wondrous works.
18 Now also (O)when I am old and grayheaded,
O God, do not forsake me,
Until I declare Your strength to this generation,
Your power to everyone who is to come.

19 Also (P)Your righteousness, O God, is [d]very high,
You who have done great things;
(Q)O God, who is like You?
20 (R)You, who have shown me great and severe troubles,
(S)Shall revive me again,
And bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
21 You shall increase my greatness,
And comfort me on every side.

22 Also (T)with the lute I will praise You—
And Your faithfulness, O my God!
To You I will sing with the harp,
O (U)Holy One of Israel.
23 My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You,
And (V)my soul, which You have redeemed.
24 My tongue also shall talk of Your righteousness all the day long;
For they are confounded,
For they are brought to shame
Who seek my hurt.

Glory and Universality of the Messiah’s Reign

A Psalm (W)of Solomon.

72 Give the king Your judgments, O God,
And Your righteousness to the king’s Son.
(X)He will judge Your people with righteousness,
And Your poor with justice.
(Y)The mountains will bring peace to the people,
And the little hills, by righteousness.
(Z)He will bring justice to the poor of the people;
He will save the children of the needy,
And will [e]break in pieces the oppressor.

[f]They shall fear You
(AA)As long as the sun and moon endure,
Throughout all generations.
(AB)He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing,
Like showers that water the earth.
In His days the righteous shall flourish,
(AC)And abundance of peace,
Until the moon is no more.

(AD)He shall have dominion also from sea to sea,
And from the River to the ends of the earth.
(AE)Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him,
(AF)And His enemies will lick the dust.
10 (AG)The kings of Tarshish and of the isles
Will bring presents;
The kings of Sheba and Seba
Will offer gifts.
11 (AH)Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him;
All nations shall serve Him.

12 For He (AI)will deliver the needy when he cries,
The poor also, and him who has no helper.
13 He will spare the poor and needy,
And will save the souls of the needy.
14 He will redeem their life from oppression and violence;
And (AJ)precious shall be their blood in His sight.

15 And He shall live;
And the gold of (AK)Sheba will be given to Him;
Prayer also will be made for Him continually,
And daily He shall be praised.

16 There will be an abundance of grain in the earth,
On the top of the mountains;
Its fruit shall wave like Lebanon;
(AL)And those of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.

17 (AM)His name shall endure forever;
His name shall continue as long as the sun.
And (AN)men shall be blessed in Him;
(AO)All nations shall call Him blessed.

18 (AP)Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel,
(AQ)Who only does wondrous things!
19 And (AR)blessed be His glorious name forever!
(AS)And let the whole earth be filled with His glory.
Amen and Amen.

20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

BOOK THREE

Psalms 73–89

The Tragedy of the Wicked, and the Blessedness of Trust in God

A Psalm of (AT)Asaph.

73 Truly God is good to Israel,
To such as are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;
My steps had nearly (AU)slipped.
(AV)For I was envious of the boastful,
When I saw the prosperity of the (AW)wicked.

For there are no [g]pangs in their death,
But their strength is firm.
(AX)They are not in trouble as other men,
Nor are they plagued like other men.
Therefore pride serves as their necklace;
Violence covers them (AY)like a garment.
(AZ)Their [h]eyes bulge with abundance;
They have more than heart could wish.
(BA)They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression;
They (BB)speak [i]loftily.
They set their mouth (BC)against the heavens,
And their tongue walks through the earth.

10 Therefore his people return here,
(BD)And waters of a full cup are drained by them.
11 And they say, (BE)“How does God know?
And is there knowledge in the Most High?”
12 Behold, these are the ungodly,
Who are always at ease;
They increase in riches.
13 Surely I have [j]cleansed my heart in (BF)vain,
And washed my hands in innocence.
14 For all day long I have been plagued,
And chastened every morning.

15 If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
Behold, I would have been untrue to the generation of Your children.
16 When I thought how to understand this,
It was [k]too painful for me—
17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God;
Then I understood their (BG)end.

18 Surely (BH)You set them in slippery places;
You cast them down to destruction.
19 Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment!
They are utterly consumed with terrors.
20 As a dream when one awakes,
So, Lord, when You awake,
You shall despise their image.

21 Thus my heart was grieved,
And I was [l]vexed in my mind.
22 (BI)I was so foolish and ignorant;
I was like a beast before You.
23 Nevertheless I am continually with You;
You hold me by my right hand.
24 (BJ)You will guide me with Your counsel,
And afterward receive me to glory.

25 (BK)Whom have I in heaven but You?
And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
26 (BL)My flesh and my heart fail;
But God is the [m]strength of my heart and my (BM)portion forever.

27 For indeed, (BN)those who are far from You shall perish;
You have destroyed all those who [n]desert You for harlotry.
28 But it is good for me to (BO)draw near to God;
I have put my trust in the Lord God,
That I may (BP)declare all Your works.

A Plea for Relief from Oppressors

A [o]Contemplation of Asaph.

74 O God, why have You cast us off forever?
Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture?
Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old,
The tribe of Your inheritance, which You have redeemed—
This Mount Zion where You have dwelt.
Lift up Your feet to the perpetual desolations.
The enemy has damaged everything in the sanctuary.
(BQ)Your enemies roar in the midst of Your meeting place;
(BR)They set up their banners for signs.
They seem like men who lift up
Axes among the thick trees.
And now they break down its carved work, all at once,
With axes and hammers.
They have set fire to Your sanctuary;
They have defiled the dwelling place of Your name to the ground.
(BS)They said in their hearts,
“Let us [p]destroy them altogether.”
They have burned up all the meeting places of God in the land.

We do not see our signs;
(BT)There is no longer any prophet;
Nor is there any among us who knows how long.
10 O God, how long will the adversary [q]reproach?
Will the enemy blaspheme Your name forever?
11 (BU)Why do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand?
Take it out of Your bosom and destroy them.
12 For (BV)God is my King from of old,
Working salvation in the midst of the earth.
13 (BW)You divided the sea by Your strength;
You broke the heads of the [r]sea serpents in the waters.
14 You broke the heads of [s]Leviathan in pieces,
And gave him as food to the people inhabiting the wilderness.
15 (BX)You broke open the fountain and the flood;
(BY)You dried up mighty rivers.
16 The day is Yours, the night also is (BZ)Yours;
(CA)You have prepared the light and the sun.
17 You have (CB)set all the borders of the earth;
(CC)You have made summer and winter.

18 Remember this, that the enemy has reproached, O Lord,
And that a foolish people has blasphemed Your name.
19 Oh, do not deliver the life of Your turtledove to the wild beast!
Do not forget the life of Your poor forever.
20 (CD)Have respect to the covenant;
For the [t]dark places of the earth are full of the [u]haunts of [v]cruelty.
21 Oh, do not let the oppressed return ashamed!
Let the poor and needy praise Your name.

22 Arise, O God, plead Your own cause;
Remember how the foolish man [w]reproaches You daily.
23 Do not forget the voice of Your enemies;
The tumult of those who rise up against You increases continually.

Thanksgiving for God’s Righteous Judgment

To the Chief Musician. Set to (CE)“Do[x] Not Destroy.” A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.

75 We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks!
For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near.

“When I choose the [y]proper time,
I will judge uprightly.
The earth and all its inhabitants are dissolved;
I set up its pillars firmly. Selah

“I said to the boastful, ‘Do not deal boastfully,’
And to the wicked, (CF)‘Do not [z]lift up the horn.
Do not lift up your horn on high;
Do not speak with [aa]a stiff neck.’ ”

For exaltation comes neither from the east
Nor from the west nor from the south.
But (CG)God is the Judge:
(CH)He puts down one,
And exalts another.
For (CI)in the hand of the Lord there is a cup,
And the wine is red;
It is fully mixed, and He pours it out;
Surely its dregs shall all the wicked of the earth
Drain and drink down.

But I will declare forever,
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.

10 “All(CJ) the [ab]horns of the wicked I will also cut off,
But (CK)the horns of the righteous shall be (CL)exalted.”

Of Solomon.

Endow the king with your justice,(BD) O God,
    the royal son with your righteousness.
May he judge your people in righteousness,(BE)
    your afflicted ones with justice.

May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
    the hills the fruit of righteousness.
May he defend the afflicted(BF) among the people
    and save the children of the needy;(BG)
    may he crush the oppressor.(BH)
May he endure[a](BI) as long as the sun,
    as long as the moon, through all generations.(BJ)
May he be like rain(BK) falling on a mown field,
    like showers watering the earth.
In his days may the righteous flourish(BL)
    and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

May he rule from sea to sea
    and from the River[b](BM) to the ends of the earth.(BN)
May the desert tribes bow before him

10 May the kings of Tarshish(BO) and of distant shores(BP)
    bring tribute to him.
May the kings of Sheba(BQ) and Seba
    present him gifts.(BR)
11 May all kings bow down(BS) to him

BOOK III

Psalms 73–89

Psalm 73

A psalm of Asaph.

Surely God is good to Israel,
    to those who are pure in heart.(CM)

But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;(CN)
    I had nearly lost my foothold.(CO)
For I envied(CP) the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.(CQ)

They have no struggles;
    their bodies are healthy and strong.[e]
They are free(CR) from common human burdens;
    they are not plagued by human ills.
Therefore pride(CS) is their necklace;(CT)
    they clothe themselves with violence.(CU)
From their callous hearts(CV) comes iniquity[f];
    their evil imaginations have no limits.
They scoff, and speak with malice;(CW)
    with arrogance(CX) they threaten oppression.(CY)
Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
    and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore their people turn to them
    and drink up waters in abundance.[g]
11 They say, “How would God know?
    Does the Most High know anything?”

12 This is what the wicked are like—
    always free of care,(CZ) they go on amassing wealth.(DA)

13 Surely in vain(DB) I have kept my heart pure
    and have washed my hands in innocence.(DC)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,(DD)
    and every morning brings new punishments.

15 If I had spoken out like that,
    I would have betrayed your children.
16 When I tried to understand(DE) all this,
    it troubled me deeply
17 till I entered the sanctuary(DF) of God;
    then I understood their final destiny.(DG)

18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;(DH)
    you cast them down to ruin.(DI)
19 How suddenly(DJ) are they destroyed,
    completely swept away(DK) by terrors!
20 They are like a dream(DL) when one awakes;(DM)
    when you arise, Lord,
    you will despise them as fantasies.(DN)

21 When my heart was grieved
    and my spirit embittered,
22 I was senseless(DO) and ignorant;
    I was a brute beast(DP) before you.

23 Yet I am always with you;
    you hold me by my right hand.(DQ)
24 You guide(DR) me with your counsel,(DS)
    and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?(DT)
    And earth has nothing I desire besides you.(DU)
26 My flesh and my heart(DV) may fail,(DW)
    but God is the strength(DX) of my heart
    and my portion(DY) forever.

27 Those who are far from you will perish;(DZ)
    you destroy all who are unfaithful(EA) to you.
28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.(EB)
    I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;(EC)
    I will tell of all your deeds.(ED)

Psalm 74

A maskil[h] of Asaph.

O God, why have you rejected(EE) us forever?(EF)
    Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?(EG)
Remember the nation you purchased(EH) long ago,(EI)
    the people of your inheritance,(EJ) whom you redeemed(EK)
    Mount Zion,(EL) where you dwelt.(EM)
Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,(EN)
    all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.

Your foes roared(EO) in the place where you met with us;
    they set up their standards(EP) as signs.
They behaved like men wielding axes
    to cut through a thicket of trees.(EQ)
They smashed all the carved(ER) paneling
    with their axes and hatchets.
They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
    they defiled(ES) the dwelling place(ET) of your Name.(EU)
They said in their hearts, “We will crush(EV) them completely!”
    They burned(EW) every place where God was worshiped in the land.

We are given no signs from God;(EX)
    no prophets(EY) are left,
    and none of us knows how long this will be.
10 How long(EZ) will the enemy mock(FA) you, God?
    Will the foe revile(FB) your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?(FC)
    Take it from the folds of your garment(FD) and destroy them!

12 But God is my King(FE) from long ago;
    he brings salvation(FF) on the earth.

13 It was you who split open the sea(FG) by your power;
    you broke the heads of the monster(FH) in the waters.
14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan(FI)
    and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.(FJ)
15 It was you who opened up springs(FK) and streams;
    you dried up(FL) the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;
    you established the sun and moon.(FM)
17 It was you who set all the boundaries(FN) of the earth;
    you made both summer and winter.(FO)

18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
    how foolish people(FP) have reviled your name.
19 Do not hand over the life of your dove(FQ) to wild beasts;
    do not forget the lives of your afflicted(FR) people forever.
20 Have regard for your covenant,(FS)
    because haunts of violence fill the dark places(FT) of the land.
21 Do not let the oppressed(FU) retreat in disgrace;
    may the poor and needy(FV) praise your name.
22 Rise up,(FW) O God, and defend your cause;
    remember how fools(FX) mock you all day long.
23 Do not ignore the clamor(FY) of your adversaries,(FZ)
    the uproar(GA) of your enemies,(GB) which rises continually.

Psalm 75[i]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph. A song.

We praise you, God,
    we praise you, for your Name is near;(GC)
    people tell of your wonderful deeds.(GD)

You say, “I choose the appointed time;(GE)
    it is I who judge with equity.(GF)
When the earth and all its people quake,(GG)
    it is I who hold its pillars(GH) firm.[j]
To the arrogant(GI) I say, ‘Boast no more,’(GJ)
    and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.[k](GK)
Do not lift your horns against heaven;
    do not speak so defiantly.(GL)’”

No one from the east or the west
    or from the desert can exalt themselves.
It is God who judges:(GM)
    He brings one down, he exalts another.(GN)
In the hand of the Lord is a cup
    full of foaming wine mixed(GO) with spices;
he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
    drink it down to its very dregs.(GP)

As for me, I will declare(GQ) this forever;
    I will sing(GR) praise to the God of Jacob,(GS)
10 who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
    but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”(GT)
