Psalm 33

Sing joyfully(A) to the Lord, you righteous;
    it is fitting(B) for the upright(C) to praise him.
Praise the Lord with the harp;(D)
    make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.(E)
Sing to him a new song;(F)
    play skillfully, and shout for joy.(G)

For the word of the Lord is right(H) and true;(I)
    he is faithful(J) in all he does.
The Lord loves righteousness and justice;(K)
    the earth is full of his unfailing love.(L)

By the word(M) of the Lord the heavens were made,(N)
    their starry host(O) by the breath of his mouth.
He gathers the waters(P) of the sea into jars[a];(Q)
    he puts the deep into storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord;(R)
    let all the people of the world(S) revere him.(T)
For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded,(U) and it stood firm.

10 The Lord foils(V) the plans(W) of the nations;(X)
    he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
11 But the plans of the Lord stand firm(Y) forever,
    the purposes(Z) of his heart through all generations.

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,(AA)
    the people he chose(AB) for his inheritance.(AC)
13 From heaven the Lord looks down(AD)
    and sees all mankind;(AE)
14 from his dwelling place(AF) he watches
    all who live on earth—
15 he who forms(AG) the hearts of all,
    who considers everything they do.(AH)

16 No king is saved by the size of his army;(AI)
    no warrior escapes by his great strength.
17 A horse(AJ) is a vain hope for deliverance;
    despite all its great strength it cannot save.
18 But the eyes(AK) of the Lord are on those who fear him,
    on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,(AL)
19 to deliver them from death(AM)
    and keep them alive in famine.(AN)

20 We wait(AO) in hope for the Lord;
    he is our help and our shield.
21 In him our hearts rejoice,(AP)
    for we trust in his holy name.(AQ)
22 May your unfailing love(AR) be with us, Lord,
    even as we put our hope in you.

Psalm 34[b][c]

Of David. When he pretended to be insane(AS) before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he left.

I will extol the Lord at all times;(AT)
    his praise will always be on my lips.
I will glory(AU) in the Lord;
    let the afflicted hear and rejoice.(AV)
Glorify the Lord(AW) with me;
    let us exalt(AX) his name together.

I sought the Lord,(AY) and he answered me;
    he delivered(AZ) me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant;(BA)
    their faces are never covered with shame.(BB)
This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
    he saved him out of all his troubles.(BC)
The angel of the Lord(BD) encamps around those who fear him,
    and he delivers(BE) them.

Taste and see that the Lord is good;(BF)
    blessed is the one who takes refuge(BG) in him.
Fear the Lord,(BH) you his holy people,
    for those who fear him lack nothing.(BI)
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
    but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.(BJ)
11 Come, my children, listen(BK) to me;
    I will teach you(BL) the fear of the Lord.(BM)
12 Whoever of you loves life(BN)
    and desires to see many good days,
13 keep your tongue(BO) from evil
    and your lips from telling lies.(BP)
14 Turn from evil and do good;(BQ)
    seek peace(BR) and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord(BS) are on the righteous,(BT)
    and his ears are attentive(BU) to their cry;
16 but the face of the Lord is against(BV) those who do evil,(BW)
    to blot out their name(BX) from the earth.

17 The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears(BY) them;
    he delivers them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord is close(BZ) to the brokenhearted(CA)
    and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

19 The righteous person may have many troubles,(CB)
    but the Lord delivers him from them all;(CC)
20 he protects all his bones,
    not one of them will be broken.(CD)

21 Evil will slay the wicked;(CE)
    the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord will rescue(CF) his servants;
    no one who takes refuge(CG) in him will be condemned.

Psalm 35

Of David.

Contend,(CH) Lord, with those who contend with me;
    fight(CI) against those who fight against me.
Take up shield(CJ) and armor;
    arise(CK) and come to my aid.(CL)
Brandish spear(CM) and javelin[d](CN)
    against those who pursue me.
Say to me,
    “I am your salvation.(CO)

May those who seek my life(CP)
    be disgraced(CQ) and put to shame;(CR)
may those who plot my ruin
    be turned back(CS) in dismay.
May they be like chaff(CT) before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord(CU) driving them away;
may their path be dark and slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

Since they hid their net(CV) for me without cause(CW)
    and without cause dug a pit(CX) for me,
may ruin overtake them by surprise—(CY)
    may the net they hid entangle them,
    may they fall into the pit,(CZ) to their ruin.
Then my soul will rejoice(DA) in the Lord
    and delight in his salvation.(DB)
10 My whole being will exclaim,
    “Who is like you,(DC) Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong(DD) for them,
    the poor and needy(DE) from those who rob them.”

11 Ruthless witnesses(DF) come forward;
    they question me on things I know nothing about.
12 They repay me evil for good(DG)
    and leave me like one bereaved.
13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth(DH)
    and humbled myself with fasting.(DI)
When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14     I went about mourning(DJ)
    as though for my friend or brother.
I bowed my head in grief
    as though weeping for my mother.
15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;(DK)
    assailants gathered against me without my knowledge.
    They slandered(DL) me without ceasing.
16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked;[e](DM)
    they gnashed their teeth(DN) at me.

17 How long,(DO) Lord, will you look on?
    Rescue me from their ravages,
    my precious life(DP) from these lions.(DQ)
18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly;(DR)
    among the throngs(DS) I will praise you.(DT)
19 Do not let those gloat over me
    who are my enemies(DU) without cause;
do not let those who hate me without reason(DV)
    maliciously wink the eye.(DW)
20 They do not speak peaceably,
    but devise false accusations(DX)
    against those who live quietly in the land.
21 They sneer(DY) at me and say, “Aha! Aha!(DZ)
    With our own eyes we have seen it.”

22 Lord, you have seen(EA) this; do not be silent.
    Do not be far(EB) from me, Lord.
23 Awake,(EC) and rise(ED) to my defense!
    Contend(EE) for me, my God and Lord.
24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
    do not let them gloat(EF) over me.
25 Do not let them think, “Aha,(EG) just what we wanted!”
    or say, “We have swallowed him up.”(EH)

26 May all who gloat(EI) over my distress(EJ)
    be put to shame(EK) and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me(EL)
    be clothed with shame and disgrace.
27 May those who delight in my vindication(EM)
    shout for joy(EN) and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
    who delights(EO) in the well-being of his servant.”(EP)

28 My tongue will proclaim your righteousness,(EQ)
    your praises all day long.(ER)

Psalm 36[f]

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord.

I have a message from God in my heart
    concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:[g](ES)
There is no fear(ET) of God
    before their eyes.(EU)

In their own eyes they flatter themselves
    too much to detect or hate their sin.(EV)
The words of their mouths(EW) are wicked and deceitful;(EX)
    they fail to act wisely(EY) or do good.(EZ)
Even on their beds they plot evil;(FA)
    they commit themselves to a sinful course(FB)
    and do not reject what is wrong.(FC)

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness(FD) to the skies.(FE)
Your righteousness(FF) is like the highest mountains,(FG)
    your justice like the great deep.(FH)
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.(FI)
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!(FJ)
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.(FK)
They feast on the abundance of your house;(FL)
    you give them drink from your river(FM) of delights.(FN)
For with you is the fountain of life;(FO)
    in your light(FP) we see light.

10 Continue your love(FQ) to those who know you,(FR)
    your righteousness to the upright in heart.(FS)
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
    nor the hand of the wicked(FT) drive me away.
12 See how the evildoers lie fallen—
    thrown down, not able to rise!(FU)

Psalm 37[h]

Of David.

Do not fret because of those who are evil
    or be envious(FV) of those who do wrong;(FW)

    like green plants they will soon die away.(FY)

Trust in the Lord and do good;
    dwell in the land(FZ) and enjoy safe pasture.(GA)
Take delight(GB) in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.(GC)

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him(GD) and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward(GE) shine like the dawn,(GF)
    your vindication like the noonday sun.

Be still(GG) before the Lord
    and wait patiently(GH) for him;
do not fret(GI) when people succeed in their ways,(GJ)
    when they carry out their wicked schemes.(GK)

Refrain from anger(GL) and turn from wrath;
    do not fret(GM)—it leads only to evil.
For those who are evil will be destroyed,(GN)
    but those who hope(GO) in the Lord will inherit the land.(GP)

10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;(GQ)
    though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land(GR)
    and enjoy peace and prosperity.(GS)

12 The wicked plot(GT) against the righteous
    and gnash their teeth(GU) at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
    for he knows their day is coming.(GV)

14 The wicked draw the sword(GW)
    and bend the bow(GX)
to bring down the poor and needy,(GY)
    to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,(GZ)
    and their bows will be broken.(HA)

16 Better the little that the righteous have
    than the wealth(HB) of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,(HC)
    but the Lord upholds(HD) the righteous.

18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,(HE)
    and their inheritance will endure forever.(HF)
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
    in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

20 But the wicked will perish:(HG)
    Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field,
    they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.(HH)

21 The wicked borrow and do not repay,
    but the righteous give generously;(HI)
22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,

    of the one who delights(HM) in him;
24 though he may stumble, he will not fall,(HN)
    for the Lord upholds(HO) him with his hand.

25 I was young and now I am old,
    yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken(HP)
    or their children begging(HQ) bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely;(HR)
    their children will be a blessing.[i](HS)

27 Turn from evil and do good;(HT)
    then you will dwell in the land forever.(HU)
28 For the Lord loves the just

34 Hope in the Lord(IG)
    and keep his way.(IH)
He will exalt you to inherit the land;
    when the wicked are destroyed,(II) you will see(IJ) it.

35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man
    flourishing(IK) like a luxuriant native tree,
36 but he soon passed away and was no more;
    though I looked for him, he could not be found.(IL)

37 Consider the blameless,(IM) observe the upright;(IN)

33 Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.

Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.

Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth.

He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

10 The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.

11 The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

13 The Lord looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.

14 From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.

15 He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works.

16 There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.

17 An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.

18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;

19 To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.

22 Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.

34 I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.

11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?

13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

16 The face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.

20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

21 Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.

22 The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

35 Plead my cause, O Lord, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me.

Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help.

Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that persecute me: say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.

Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt.

Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the Lord chase them.

Let their way be dark and slippery: and let the angel of the Lord persecute them.

For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have digged for my soul.

Let destruction come upon him at unawares; and let his net that he hath hid catch himself: into that very destruction let him fall.

And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord: it shall rejoice in his salvation.

10 All my bones shall say, Lord, who is like unto thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him?

11 False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.

12 They rewarded me evil for good to the spoiling of my soul.

13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

14 I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily, as one that mourneth for his mother.

15 But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: yea, the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not:

16 With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.

17 Lord, how long wilt thou look on? rescue my soul from their destructions, my darling from the lions.

18 I will give thee thanks in the great congregation: I will praise thee among much people.

19 Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

20 For they speak not peace: but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land.

21 Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me, and said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it.

22 This thou hast seen, O Lord: keep not silence: O Lord, be not far from me.

23 Stir up thyself, and awake to my judgment, even unto my cause, my God and my Lord.

24 Judge me, O Lord my God, according to thy righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me.

25 Let them not say in their hearts, Ah, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up.

26 Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me.

27 Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the Lord be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.

28 And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long.

36 The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.

For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.

The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good.

He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.

Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.

Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O Lord, thou preservest man and beast.

How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.

They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.

For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

10 O continue thy lovingkindness unto them that know thee; and thy righteousness to the upright in heart.

11 Let not the foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of the wicked remove me.

12 There are the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast down, and shall not be able to rise.

37 Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.

Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.

10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

12 The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.

13 The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.

14 The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.

15 Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.

16 A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.

17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the Lord upholdeth the righteous.

18 The Lord knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.

19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.

21 The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.

22 For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off.

23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.

24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

26 He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.

27 Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore.

28 For the Lord loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.

29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.

30 The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment.

31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.

32 The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him.

33 The Lord will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

34 Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it.

35 I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.

36 Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble.

40 And the Lord shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.
