Psalm 127

A song of ascents. Of Solomon.

Unless the Lord builds(A) the house,
    the builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches(B) over the city,
    the guards stand watch in vain.
In vain you rise early
    and stay up late,
toiling for food(C) to eat—
    for he grants sleep(D) to[a] those he loves.(E)

Children are a heritage from the Lord,
    offspring a reward(F) from him.
Like arrows(G) in the hands of a warrior
    are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
    whose quiver is full of them.(H)
They will not be put to shame
    when they contend with their opponents(I) in court.(J)

Psalm 128

A song of ascents.

Blessed are all who fear the Lord,(K)
    who walk in obedience to him.(L)
You will eat the fruit of your labor;(M)
    blessings and prosperity(N) will be yours.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine(O)
    within your house;
your children(P) will be like olive shoots(Q)
    around your table.
Yes, this will be the blessing(R)
    for the man who fears the Lord.(S)

May the Lord bless you from Zion;(T)
    may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem(U)
    all the days of your life.
May you live to see your children’s children—(V)
    peace be on Israel.(W)

Psalm 129

A song of ascents.

“They have greatly oppressed(X) me from my youth,”(Y)
    let Israel say;(Z)
“they have greatly oppressed me from my youth,
    but they have not gained the victory(AA) over me.
Plowmen have plowed my back
    and made their furrows long.
But the Lord is righteous;(AB)
    he has cut me free(AC) from the cords of the wicked.”(AD)

May all who hate Zion(AE)
    be turned back in shame.(AF)
May they be like grass on the roof,(AG)
    which withers(AH) before it can grow;
a reaper cannot fill his hands with it,(AI)
    nor one who gathers fill his arms.
May those who pass by not say to them,
    “The blessing of the Lord be on you;
    we bless you(AJ) in the name of the Lord.”

Psalm 130

A song of ascents.

Out of the depths(AK) I cry to you,(AL) Lord;
    Lord, hear my voice.(AM)
Let your ears be attentive(AN)
    to my cry for mercy.(AO)

If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
    Lord, who could stand?(AP)
But with you there is forgiveness,(AQ)
    so that we can, with reverence, serve you.(AR)

I wait for the Lord,(AS) my whole being waits,(AT)
    and in his word(AU) I put my hope.
I wait for the Lord
    more than watchmen(AV) wait for the morning,
    more than watchmen wait for the morning.(AW)

Israel, put your hope(AX) in the Lord,
    for with the Lord is unfailing love(AY)
    and with him is full redemption.(AZ)
He himself will redeem(BA) Israel
    from all their sins.(BB)

Psalm 131

A song of ascents. Of David.

My heart is not proud,(BC) Lord,
    my eyes are not haughty;(BD)
I do not concern myself with great matters(BE)
    or things too wonderful for me.(BF)
But I have calmed and quieted myself,(BG)
    I am like a weaned child with its mother;
    like a weaned child I am content.(BH)

Israel, put your hope(BI) in the Lord
    both now and forevermore.(BJ)

Psalm 132(BK)

A song of ascents.

Lord, remember David
    and all his self-denial.(BL)

He swore an oath to the Lord,
    he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:(BM)
“I will not enter my house(BN)
    or go to my bed,
I will allow no sleep to my eyes
    or slumber to my eyelids,
till I find a place(BO) for the Lord,
    a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

We heard it in Ephrathah,(BP)
    we came upon it in the fields of Jaar:[b](BQ)
“Let us go to his dwelling place,(BR)
    let us worship at his footstool,(BS) saying,
‘Arise, Lord,(BT) and come to your resting place,
    you and the ark of your might.
May your priests be clothed with your righteousness;(BU)
    may your faithful people(BV) sing for joy.’”

10 For the sake of your servant David,
    do not reject your anointed one.

11 The Lord swore an oath to David,(BW)
    a sure oath he will not revoke:
“One of your own descendants(BX)
    I will place on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant(BY)
    and the statutes I teach them,
then their sons will sit
    on your throne(BZ) for ever and ever.”

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion,(CA)
    he has desired it for his dwelling,(CB) saying,
14 “This is my resting place for ever and ever;(CC)
    here I will sit enthroned,(CD) for I have desired it.
15 I will bless her with abundant provisions;
    her poor I will satisfy with food.(CE)
16 I will clothe her priests(CF) with salvation,
    and her faithful people will ever sing for joy.(CG)

17 “Here I will make a horn[c] grow(CH) for David
    and set up a lamp(CI) for my anointed one.(CJ)
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,(CK)
    but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown.”(CL)

Psalm 133

A song of ascents. Of David.

How good and pleasant it is
    when God’s people live together(CM) in unity!(CN)

It is like precious oil poured on the head,(CO)
    running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
    down on the collar of his robe.
It is as if the dew(CP) of Hermon(CQ)
    were falling on Mount Zion.(CR)
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,(CS)
    even life forevermore.(CT)

  3. Psalm 132:17 Horn here symbolizes strong one, that is, king.

127 Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

128 Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways.

For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.

Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord.

The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.

Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children, and peace upon Israel.

129 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:

Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.

The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.

The Lord is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.

Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.

Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:

Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.

Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the Lord be upon you: we bless you in the name of the Lord.

130 Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.

Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.

If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.

My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.

And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

131 Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.

Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.

Let Israel hope in the Lord from henceforth and for ever.

132 Lord, remember David, and all his afflictions:

How he sware unto the Lord, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;

Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;

I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,

Until I find out a place for the Lord, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.

Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood.

We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool.

Arise, O Lord, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.

Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout for joy.

10 For thy servant David's sake turn not away the face of thine anointed.

11 The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.

12 If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore.

13 For the Lord hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation.

14 This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

15 I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.

16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

17 There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.

18 His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.

133 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
