Psalm 126

A song of ascents.

When the Lord restored(A) the fortunes of[a] Zion,
we were like those who dreamed.[b]
Our mouths were filled with laughter,(B)
our tongues with songs of joy.(C)
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things(D) for them.”
The Lord has done great things(E) for us,
and we are filled with joy.(F)

Restore our fortunes,[c](G) Lord,
    like streams in the Negev.(H)
Those who sow with tears(I)
will reap(J) with songs of joy.(K)
Those who go out weeping,(L)
    carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
    carrying sheaves with them.

Psalm 127

A song of ascents. Of Solomon.

Unless the Lord builds(M) the house,
    the builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches(N) over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.
In vain you rise early
    and stay up late,
toiling for food(O) to eat—
for he grants sleep(P) to[d] those he loves.(Q)

Children are a heritage from the Lord,
    offspring a reward(R) from him.
Like arrows(S) in the hands of a warrior
are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.(T)
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their opponents(U) in court.(V)

Psalm 128

A song of ascents.

Blessed are all who fear the Lord,(W)
who walk in obedience to him.(X)
You will eat the fruit of your labor;(Y)
blessings and prosperity(Z) will be yours.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine(AA)
    within your house;
your children(AB) will be like olive shoots(AC)
    around your table.
Yes, this will be the blessing(AD)
for the man who fears the Lord.(AE)

May the Lord bless you from Zion;(AF)
may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem(AG)
all the days of your life.
May you live to see your children’s children—(AH)
    peace be on Israel.(AI)

Psalm 129

A song of ascents.

“They have greatly oppressed(AJ) me from my youth,”(AK)
    let Israel say;(AL)
“they have greatly oppressed me from my youth,
but they have not gained the victory(AM) over me.
Plowmen have plowed my back
    and made their furrows long.
But the Lord is righteous;(AN)
he has cut me free(AO) from the cords of the wicked.”(AP)

May all who hate Zion(AQ)
    be turned back in shame.(AR)
May they be like grass on the roof,(AS)
    which withers(AT) before it can grow;
a reaper cannot fill his hands with it,(AU)
nor one who gathers fill his arms.
May those who pass by not say to them,
    “The blessing of the Lord be on you;
we bless you(AV) in the name of the Lord.”

Psalm 130

A song of ascents.

Out of the depths(AW) I cry to you,(AX) Lord;
    Lord, hear my voice.(AY)
Let your ears be attentive(AZ)
    to my cry for mercy.(BA)

If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
    Lord, who could stand?(BB)
But with you there is forgiveness,(BC)
so that we can, with reverence, serve you.(BD)

I wait for the Lord,(BE) my whole being waits,(BF)
and in his word(BG) I put my hope.
I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen(BH) wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.(BI)

Israel, put your hope(BJ) in the Lord,
for with the Lord is unfailing love(BK)
and with him is full redemption.(BL)
He himself will redeem(BM) Israel
    from all their sins.(BN)

Psalm 131

A song of ascents. Of David.

My heart is not proud,(BO) Lord,
    my eyes are not haughty;(BP)
I do not concern myself with great matters(BQ)
or things too wonderful for me.(BR)
But I have calmed and quieted myself,(BS)
    I am like a weaned child with its mother;
    like a weaned child I am content.(BT)

Israel, put your hope(BU) in the Lord
    both now and forevermore.(BV)

Psalm 132(BW)

A song of ascents.

Lord, remember David
    and all his self-denial.(BX)

He swore an oath to the Lord,
he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:(BY)
“I will not enter my house(BZ)
    or go to my bed,
I will allow no sleep to my eyes
    or slumber to my eyelids,
till I find a place(CA) for the Lord,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

We heard it in Ephrathah,(CB)
we came upon it in the fields of Jaar:[e](CC)
“Let us go to his dwelling place,(CD)
let us worship at his footstool,(CE) saying,
‘Arise, Lord,(CF) and come to your resting place,
you and the ark of your might.
May your priests be clothed with your righteousness;(CG)
may your faithful people(CH) sing for joy.’”

10 For the sake of your servant David,
do not reject your anointed one.

11 The Lord swore an oath to David,(CI)
a sure oath he will not revoke:
“One of your own descendants(CJ)
I will place on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant(CK)
and the statutes I teach them,
then their sons will sit
on your throne(CL) for ever and ever.”

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion,(CM)
he has desired it for his dwelling,(CN) saying,
14 “This is my resting place for ever and ever;(CO)
here I will sit enthroned,(CP) for I have desired it.
15 I will bless her with abundant provisions;
her poor I will satisfy with food.(CQ)
16 I will clothe her priests(CR) with salvation,
and her faithful people will ever sing for joy.(CS)

17 “Here I will make a horn[f] grow(CT) for David
and set up a lamp(CU) for my anointed one.(CV)
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,(CW)
but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown.”(CX)

Psalm 133

A song of ascents. Of David.

How good and pleasant it is
    when God’s people live together(CY) in unity!(CZ)

It is like precious oil poured on the head,(DA)
    running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.
It is as if the dew(DB) of Hermon(DC)
    were falling on Mount Zion.(DD)
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,(DE)
    even life forevermore.(DF)

Psalm 134

A song of ascents.

Praise the Lord, all you servants(DG) of the Lord
who minister(DH) by night(DI) in the house of the Lord.
Lift up your hands(DJ) in the sanctuary(DK)
    and praise the Lord.(DL)

May the Lord bless you from Zion,(DM)
he who is the Maker of heaven(DN) and earth.

Psalm 135(DO)

Praise the Lord.[g]

Praise the name of the Lord;
praise him, you servants(DP) of the Lord,
you who minister in the house(DQ) of the Lord,
in the courts(DR) of the house of our God.

Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good;(DS)
sing praise to his name,(DT) for that is pleasant.(DU)
For the Lord has chosen Jacob(DV) to be his own,
Israel to be his treasured possession.(DW)

I know that the Lord is great,(DX)
that our Lord is greater than all gods.(DY)
The Lord does whatever pleases him,(DZ)
in the heavens and on the earth,(EA)
in the seas and all their depths.
He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth;
he sends lightning with the rain(EB)
and brings out the wind(EC) from his storehouses.(ED)

He struck down the firstborn(EE) of Egypt,
the firstborn of people and animals.
He sent his signs(EF) and wonders into your midst, Egypt,
against Pharaoh and all his servants.(EG)
10 He struck down many(EH) nations
    and killed mighty kings—
11 Sihon(EI) king of the Amorites,(EJ)
    Og king of Bashan,(EK)
and all the kings of Canaan(EL)
12 and he gave their land as an inheritance,(EM)
an inheritance to his people Israel.

13 Your name, Lord, endures forever,(EN)
your renown,(EO) Lord, through all generations.
14 For the Lord will vindicate his people(EP)
and have compassion on his servants.(EQ)

15 The idols of the nations(ER) are silver and gold,
    made by human hands.(ES)
16 They have mouths, but cannot speak,(ET)
    eyes, but cannot see.
17 They have ears, but cannot hear,
nor is there breath(EU) in their mouths.
18 Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them.

19 All you Israelites, praise the Lord;(EV)
    house of Aaron, praise the Lord;
20 house of Levi, praise the Lord;
you who fear him, praise the Lord.
21 Praise be to the Lord from Zion,(EW)
to him who dwells in Jerusalem.(EX)

Praise the Lord.

Paul, Silas[a](A) and Timothy,(B)

To the church of the Thessalonians(C) in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace and peace to you.(D)

Thanksgiving for the Thessalonians’ Faith

We always thank God for all of you(E) and continually mention you in our prayers.(F) We remember before our God and Father(G) your work produced by faith,(H) your labor prompted by love,(I) and your endurance inspired by hope(J) in our Lord Jesus Christ.

For we know, brothers and sisters[b] loved by God,(K) that he has chosen you, because our gospel(L) came to you not simply with words but also with power,(M) with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know(N) how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us(O) and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering(P) with the joy(Q) given by the Holy Spirit.(R) And so you became a model(S) to all the believers in Macedonia(T) and Achaia.(U) The Lord’s message(V) rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere.(W) Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned(X) to God from idols(Y) to serve the living and true God,(Z) 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven,(AA) whom he raised from the dead(AB)—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.(AC)

Paul’s Ministry in Thessalonica

You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you(AD) was not without results.(AE) We had previously suffered(AF) and been treated outrageously in Philippi,(AG) as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition.(AH) For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives,(AI) nor are we trying to trick you.(AJ) On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.(AK) We are not trying to please people(AL) but God, who tests our hearts.(AM) You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed(AN)—God is our witness.(AO) We were not looking for praise from people,(AP) not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles(AQ) of Christ we could have asserted our authority.(AR) Instead, we were like young children[c] among you.

Just as a nursing mother cares for her children,(AS) so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God(AT) but our lives as well.(AU) Surely you remember, brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship; we worked(AV) night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone(AW) while we preached the gospel of God to you. 10 You are witnesses,(AX) and so is God,(AY) of how holy,(AZ) righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. 11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,(BA) 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy(BB) of God, who calls(BC) you into his kingdom and glory.

13 And we also thank God continually(BD) because, when you received the word of God,(BE) which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. 14 For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators(BF) of God’s churches in Judea,(BG) which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people(BH) the same things those churches suffered from the Jews 15 who killed the Lord Jesus(BI) and the prophets(BJ) and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone 16 in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles(BK) so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit.(BL) The wrath of God has come upon them at last.[d]

Paul’s Longing to See the Thessalonians

17 But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought),(BM) out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.(BN) 18 For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan(BO) blocked our way.(BP) 19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown(BQ) in which we will glory(BR) in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes?(BS) Is it not you? 20 Indeed, you are our glory(BT) and joy.
