²⁽¹⁾Show me favor, God;
for people are trampling me down —
all day they fight and press on me.
³⁽²⁾Those who are lying in wait for me
would trample on me all day.
For those fighting against me are many.

Most High, ⁴⁽³⁾when I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
⁵⁽⁴⁾In God — I praise his word —
in God I trust; I have no fear;
what can human power do to me?
⁶⁽⁵⁾All day long they twist my words;
their only thought is to harm me.
⁷⁽⁶⁾They gather together and hide themselves,
spying on my movements, hoping to kill me.
⁸⁽⁷⁾Because of their crime, they cannot escape;
in anger, God, strike down the peoples.
⁹⁽⁸⁾You have kept count of my wanderings;
store my tears in your water-skin —
aren’t they already recorded in your book?
¹⁰⁽⁹⁾Then my enemies will turn back
on the day when I call;
this I know: that God is for me.

¹¹⁽¹⁰⁾In God — I praise his word —
in Adonai — I praise his word —
¹²⁽¹¹⁾in God I trust; I have no fear;
what can mere humans do to me?

¹³⁽¹²⁾God, I have made vows to you;
I will fulfill them with thank offerings to you.
¹⁴⁽¹³⁾For you rescued me from death,
you kept my feet from stumbling,
so that I can walk in God’s presence,
in the light of life.

57 ⁽⁰⁾For the leader. Set to “Do Not Destroy.” By David, a mikhtam, when he fled from Sha’ul into the cave:

²⁽¹⁾Show me favor, God, show me favor;
for in you I have taken refuge.
Yes, I will find refuge in the shadow of your wings
until the storms have passed.
³⁽²⁾I call to God, the Most High,
to God, who is accomplishing his purpose for me.

⁴⁽³⁾He will send from heaven and save me
when those who would trample me down mock me. (Selah)
God will send his grace and his truth.

⁵⁽⁴⁾I am surrounded by lions,
I am lying down among people breathing fire,
men whose teeth are spears and arrows
and their tongues sharp-edged swords.

⁶⁽⁵⁾Be exalted, God, above heaven!
May your glory be over all the earth!
⁷⁽⁶⁾They prepared a snare for my feet,
but I am bending over [to avoid it].
They dug a pit ahead of me,
but they fell into it themselves. (Selah)

⁸⁽⁷⁾My heart is steadfast, God, steadfast.
I will sing and make music.
⁹⁽⁸⁾Awake, my glory! Awake, lyre and lute!
I will awaken the dawn.

¹⁰⁽⁹⁾I will thank you, Adonai, among the peoples;
I will make music to you among the nations.
¹¹⁽¹⁰⁾For your grace is great, all the way to heaven,
and your truth, all the way to the skies.

²⁽¹⁾[Rulers,] does your silence really speak justice?
Are you judging people fairly?
³⁽²⁾[No!] In your hearts you devise wrongs,
your hands dispense violence in the land.

⁴⁽³⁾From the womb, the wicked are estranged,
liars on the wrong path since birth.
⁵⁽⁴⁾Their venom is like snake’s venom;
they are like a serpent that stops its ears,
⁶⁽⁵⁾so as not to hear the voice of the charmer,
no matter how well he plays.

⁷⁽⁶⁾God, break their teeth in their mouth!
Shatter the fangs of these lions, Adonai!
⁸⁽⁷⁾May they vanish like water that drains away.
May their arrows be blunted when they aim their bows.
⁹⁽⁸⁾May they be like a slug that melts as it moves,
like a stillborn baby that never sees the sun.
¹⁰⁽⁹⁾Before your cook-pots feel the heat of the burning thorns,
may he blow them away, green and blazing alike.

¹¹⁽¹⁰⁾The righteous will rejoice to see vengeance done,
they will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked;
¹²⁽¹¹⁾and people will say, “Yes, the righteous are rewarded;
there is, after all, a God who judges the earth.”
59 ⁽⁰⁾For the leader. Set to “Do Not Destroy.” By David; a mikhtam, when Sha’ul sent men to keep watch on David’s house in order to kill him:

²⁽¹⁾My God, rescue me from my enemies!
Lift me up, out of reach of my foes!
³⁽²⁾Rescue me from evildoers,
save me from bloodthirsty men.
⁴⁽³⁾For there they are, lying in wait to kill me.
Openly they gather themselves against me,
and not because I committed a crime
or sinned, Adonai.
⁵⁽⁴⁾For no fault of mine, they run and prepare.
Awaken to help me, and see!
⁶⁽⁵⁾You, Adonai Elohei-Tzva’ot,
God of Isra’el,
arouse yourself to punish all the nations;
spare none of those wicked traitors. (Selah)

⁷⁽⁶⁾They return at nightfall, snarling like dogs
as they go around the city.
⁸⁽⁷⁾Look what pours out of their mouth,
what swords are on their lips,
[as they say to themselves,]
“No one is listening, anyway.”
⁹⁽⁸⁾But you, Adonai, laugh at them,
you mock all the nations.

¹⁰⁽⁹⁾My Strength, I will watch for you,
for God is my fortress.
¹¹⁽¹⁰⁾God, who gives me grace, will come to me;
God will let me gaze in triumph at my foes.

¹²⁽¹¹⁾Don’t kill them, or my people will forget;
instead, by your power, make them wander to and fro;
but bring them down, Adonai our Shield,
¹³⁽¹²⁾for the sins their mouths make with each word from their lips.
Let them be trapped by their pride
for the curses and falsehoods they utter.
¹⁴⁽¹³⁾Finish them off in wrath,
finish them off, put an end to them,
and let them know to the ends of the earth
that God is Ruler in Ya‘akov. (Selah)

¹⁵⁽¹⁴⁾They return at nightfall, snarling like dogs
as they go around the city.
¹⁶⁽¹⁵⁾They roam about, looking for food,
prowling all night if they don’t get their fill.
¹⁷⁽¹⁶⁾But as for me, I will sing of your strength;
in the morning I will sing aloud of your grace.
For you are my fortress,
a refuge when I am in trouble.
¹⁸⁽¹⁷⁾My Strength, I will sing praises to you,
for God is my fortress, God, who gives me grace.

60 ⁽⁰⁾For the leader. Set to “Lily of Testimony.” A mikhtam of David for teaching about ²when he fought with Aram-Naharayim and with Aram-Tzovah, and Yo’av returned and killed 12,000 from Edom in the Salt Valley:

³⁽¹⁾God, you rejected us; you crushed us;
you were angry; but now revive us.
⁴⁽²⁾You made the land shake, split it apart;
now repair the rifts, for it is collapsing.
⁵⁽³⁾You made your people suffer hard times,
had us drink a wine that made us stagger.

⁶⁽⁴⁾To those who fear you because of the truth
you gave a banner to rally around, (Selah)
⁷⁽⁵⁾so that those you love could be rescued;
so save with your right hand, and answer us!

⁸⁽⁶⁾God in his holiness spoke,
and I took joy [in his promise]:
“I will divide Sh’khem
and determine the shares in the Sukkot Valley.
⁹⁽⁷⁾Gil‘ad is mine and M’nasheh mine,
Efrayim my helmet, Y’hudah my scepter.
¹⁰⁽⁸⁾Mo’av is my washpot; on Edom I throw my shoe;
P’leshet, be crushed because of me!”

¹¹⁽⁹⁾Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
¹²⁽¹⁰⁾God, have you rejected us?
You don’t go out with our armies, God.
¹³⁽¹¹⁾Help us against our enemy,
for human help is worthless.
¹⁴⁽¹²⁾With God’s help we will fight valiantly,
for he will trample our enemies.

56 (For the director. Set to The Silent, Distant Yonah. Of Dovid. A mikhtam—when the Pelishtim seized him in Gat.) Chaneini (be merciful) unto me, O Elohim: for enosh (man) tramples upon me; kol hayom they press their attack against me.

²⁽³⁾Mine adversaries kol hayom trample me; for they be rabbim that fight against me, Marom (Most High).

³⁽⁴⁾What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee.

⁴⁽⁵⁾In Elohim I will praise His Word [See Yn 1:1,14]. In Elohim I have put my trust; I will not fear what basar can do unto me.

⁵⁽⁶⁾Kol hayom they twist my words; all their machsh’vot (thoughts) are against me for rah (evil).

⁶⁽⁷⁾They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they are shomer over my steps, when they wait for my nefesh.

⁷⁽⁸⁾Shall they escape by iniquity? In Thine anger cast down the amim (peoples), O Elohim.

⁸⁽⁹⁾Thou hast acted as a sofer, recording my wanderings; put Thou my tears into Thy wineskin; are they not in Thy Sefer (Book)?

⁹⁽¹⁰⁾On the day when I cry unto Thee, then shall mine oyevim turn back; of this I have da’as; for Elohim is for me [Ro 8:31].

¹⁰⁽¹¹⁾In Elohim will I praise His Word; in Hashem will I praise His Word [Yn 1:1; Mishlei 30:4; Ps 33:6; Mishlei 8:30].

¹¹⁽¹²⁾In Elohim have I put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can adam do unto me?

¹²⁽¹³⁾Thy nederim are upon me, O Elohim; I will render todot (thank offerings) unto Thee.

¹³⁽¹⁴⁾For Thou hast delivered my nefesh from mavet (death). Wilt not Thou deliver my feet from stumblimg, that I may walk before Elohim in the Ohr HaChayyim (the light of the living)?

57 (For the one directing. Set to Do Not Destroy. Mikhtam of Dovid, when he had fled from Sha’ul into the me’arah [cave]). Channeni, O Elohim, channeni; for my nefesh taketh refuge in Thee; yes, in the tzel (shadow) of Thy wings will I make my refuge, until these devastations pass by.

²⁽³⁾I will cry out unto Elohim Elyon; unto El that fulfilleth all things for me.

³⁽⁴⁾He shall send from Shomayim, and save me from the disgrace of him that would swallow me up. Selah. Elohim shall send forth His chesed (lovingkindness) and His emes (truth).

⁴⁽⁵⁾My nefesh is among lions, and I lie even among them that devour Bnei Adam, whose shinayim (teeth) are spears and khitzim (arrows), and their leshon a sharp cherev.

⁵⁽⁶⁾Be Thou exalted, O Elohim, above Shomayim; let Thy kavod be above kol ha’aretz.

⁶⁽⁷⁾They have prepared a reshet (net) for my steps; my nefesh is bowed down; they have dug a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.

⁷⁽⁸⁾My lev is nachon (steadfast), O Elohim, my lev is nachon; I will sing and make music.

⁸⁽⁹⁾Awake, my kavod (glory, soul, life); awake, nevel and kinnor; I myself will awake the shachar (dawn).

⁹⁽¹⁰⁾I will give thanks unto Thee, Adonoi, among the peoples; I will sing of Thee among the peoples.

¹⁰⁽¹¹⁾For Thy chesed is gadol unto Shomayim, and Thy emes unto the heights.

¹¹⁽¹²⁾Be Thou exalted, O Elohim, above Shomayim; let Thy kavod be above kol ha’aretz (all the earth).

58 (For the one directing. Set to Do Not Destroy. Mikhtam Dovid). Do ye indeed decree tzedek, O elim (g-ds, Ex 22:28[27])? Do ye judge uprightly the Bnei Adam?

²⁽³⁾No, in lev (heart) ye work wickedness; ye weigh out the chamas (violence) of your hands in Ha’Aretz.

³⁽⁴⁾The resha’im are perverted from the rekhem (womb); gone astray from birth are they, speaking kazav (lie, falsehood).

⁴⁽⁵⁾Their venom is like the venom of a nachash; they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth its ear;

⁵⁽⁶⁾That it may not pay heed to the voice of charmers, casting spells ever so cunningly.

⁶⁽⁷⁾Break their teeth, O Elohim, in their mouth; tear out the fangs of the young lions, Hashem.

⁷⁽⁸⁾Let them melt away like draining mayim; when he bendeth his bow to shoot his khitzim (arrows), let them be crumbled to pieces.

⁸⁽⁹⁾As a snail which melteth, let every one of them pass away; like the stillborn child of an isha, that they may not see the shemesh.

⁹⁽¹⁰⁾Before your sirot (pots) can feel the burning thorns, may He with a whirlwind blow them away, both green and dry alike.

¹⁰⁽¹¹⁾The tzaddik shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance; he shall wash feet in the dahm harasha.

¹¹⁽¹²⁾So that adam shall say, Verily there is a reward for the tzaddik; verily yesh Elohim Shofetim ba’aretz (there is a G-d that judgeth in the earth).

59 (For the one directing. Set to Do Not Destroy. Mikhtam Dovid. When Sha’ul sent and they watched [Dovid’s] bais to kill him) Save me from mine enemies, O Elohai; protect me from them that rise up against me.

²Deliver me from the po’alei aven (workers of iniquity), and save me from anshei damim (bloody men).

³For, hinei, they lie in wait for my nefesh; the fierce stir up strife against me; not for my peysha, nor for my chattat, Hashem.

⁴They run and prepare themselves without my avon (wrong, fault); awake to help me, and see.

⁵Thou therefore, Hashem Elohim Tzva’os, Elohei Yisroel, rouse Thyself to visit [in punishment] kol HaGoyim; be not merciful to any bogedei aven (wicked boged [traitor]). Selah.

⁶They return at erev; they growl like a kelev (dog), and prowl around the Ir.

⁷Hinei, they belch out with their mouth; charavot (swords) are in their sfatot (lips); for who, say they, doth hear?

⁸But Thou, Hashem, shalt laugh at them; Thou shalt have all the Goyim in derision.

⁹O my Strength, I will be shomer to watch for Thee; for Elohim is my stronghold.

¹⁰The G-d of my chesed shall come to meet me; Elohim shall let me see [the end] of my shorer (watchers, [i.e., slandering foes insidiously fixated on me and lying in wait]).

¹¹Slay them not, lest my people forget; scatter them by Thy power; and bring them down, Adonoi mogineinu (our Shield).

¹²For the chattat of their mouth and the davar of their sfatayim let them even be caught in their ga’on (pride); and for the cursing and lying which they speak.

¹³Consume them in chemah (wrath), consume them, till they are no more; and let them know that Elohim ruleth in Ya’akov unto the ends of ha’aretz. Selah.

¹⁴And at erev let them return; and let them growl like a kelev, and prowl around the Ir.

¹⁵Let them wander up and down for okhel (food), and howl if they be not satisfied.

¹⁶But I will sing of Thy oz; yes, I will sing aloud of Thy chesed in the boker; for Thou hast been my stronghold and refuge in the day of my tzoros.

¹⁷Unto Thee, O my Strength, will I sing; for Elohim is my strongold, and the Elohim of my chesed.

60 (For the one directing. Set to The Shushan of the Edut. Mikhtam Dovid to instruct. When he fought Aram Naharayim and Aram Tzovah and when Yo’av returned and struck down 12,000 of Edom in the Gey Melach.) O Elohim, Thou hath rejected us, scattered us; Thou hast been angry; O restore us!

²⁽⁴⁾Thou hast made eretz to tremble; Thou hast torn it asunder, heal the fractures thereof; for it tottereth.

³⁽⁵⁾Thou hast showed Thy people kashah (hard times); Thou hast made us to drink the yayin of tarelah (bewilderment, reeling).

⁴⁽⁶⁾Thou hast set up a nes (banner) to them that fear Thee, that it may be unfurled on account of the truth. Selah.

⁵⁽⁷⁾That Thy Yedidot (beloved ones) may be saved; save with Thy Yamin (Right Hand) and hear me.

⁶⁽⁸⁾Elohim hath spoken in His Kodesh (Holiness); I will exult, I will parcel Shechem as chelek, and measure out the Valley of Sukkot.

⁷⁽⁹⁾Gil‘ad is Mine, and Menasheh is Mine; Ephrayim also is the ma’oz of Mine Rosh; Yehudah is My Mekhokek (prescriber of laws, lawgiver; see Gn 49:10; Isa 42:4 on Moshiach’s torah).

⁸⁽¹⁰⁾Moav is My washpot; over Edom will I cast My sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.

⁹⁽¹¹⁾Who will bring me to the Ir Matzon (city of fortification)? Who will bring me to Edom?

¹⁰⁽¹²⁾Wilt not Thou, O Elohim, which hadst cast us off? And Thou, O Elohim, which didst not go out with tzivoteinu (our armies)?

¹¹⁽¹³⁾Give us help against the enemy; for vain is the teshuat adam (help, salvation of or from Man).

¹²⁽¹⁴⁾In Elohim shall we obtain the victory; for He it is that shall tread down tzareinu (our enemies, oppressors).
