² The Lord looks down from heaven^(C)
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,^(D)
    any who seek God.^(E)
3 All have turned away,^(F) all have become corrupt;^(G)
    there is no one who does good,^(H)
    not even one.^(I)

⁴ Do all these evildoers know nothing?^(J)

They devour my people^(K) as though eating bread;
    they never call on the Lord.^(L)
5 But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    for God is present in the company of the righteous.
⁶ You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.^(M)

⁷ Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!^(N)
    When the Lord restores^(O) his people,
    let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

⁴ You are my King^(M) and my God,^(N)
    who decrees^[c] victories^(O) for Jacob.
⁵ Through you we push back^(P) our enemies;
    through your name we trample^(Q) our foes.
⁶ I put no trust in my bow,^(R)
    my sword does not bring me victory;
⁷ but you give us victory^(S) over our enemies,
    you put our adversaries to shame.^(T)
8 In God we make our boast^(U) all day long,^(V)
    and we will praise your name forever.^[d](W)

⁹ But now you have rejected^(X) and humbled us;^(Y)
    you no longer go out with our armies.^(Z)
10 You made us retreat^(AA) before the enemy,
    and our adversaries have plundered^(AB) us.
¹¹ You gave us up to be devoured like sheep^(AC)
    and have scattered us among the nations.^(AD)
12 You sold your people for a pittance,^(AE)
    gaining nothing from their sale.

¹³ You have made us a reproach^(AF) to our neighbors,^(AG)
    the scorn^(AH) and derision^(AI) of those around us.
¹⁴ You have made us a byword^(AJ) among the nations;
    the peoples shake their heads^(AK) at us.
¹⁵ I live in disgrace^(AL) all day long,
    and my face is covered with shame^(AM)
16 at the taunts^(AN) of those who reproach and revile^(AO) me,
    because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.^(AP)

¹⁷ All this came upon us,
    though we had not forgotten^(AQ) you;
    we had not been false to your covenant.
¹⁸ Our hearts had not turned^(AR) back;
    our feet had not strayed from your path.
¹⁹ But you crushed^(AS) us and made us a haunt for jackals;^(AT)
    you covered us over with deep darkness.^(AU)

²⁰ If we had forgotten^(AV) the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,^(AW)
21 would not God have discovered it,
    since he knows the secrets of the heart?^(AX)
22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep^(AY) to be slaughtered.^(AZ)

²³ Awake,^(BA) Lord! Why do you sleep?^(BB)
    Rouse yourself!^(BC) Do not reject us forever.^(BD)
24 Why do you hide your face^(BE)
    and forget^(BF) our misery and oppression?^(BG)

²⁵ We are brought down to the dust;^(BH)
    our bodies cling to the ground.
²⁶ Rise up^(BI) and help us;
    rescue^(BJ) us because of your unfailing love.^(BK)

⁴ Your foes roared^(K) in the place where you met with us;
    they set up their standards^(L) as signs.
⁵ They behaved like men wielding axes
    to cut through a thicket of trees.^(M)
6 They smashed all the carved^(N) paneling
    with their axes and hatchets.
⁷ They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
    they defiled^(O) the dwelling place^(P) of your Name.^(Q)
8 They said in their hearts, “We will crush^(R) them completely!”
    They burned^(S) every place where God was worshiped in the land.

⁹ We are given no signs from God;^(T)
    no prophets^(U) are left,
    and none of us knows how long this will be.
¹⁰ How long^(V) will the enemy mock^(W) you, God?
    Will the foe revile^(X) your name forever?
¹¹ Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?^(Y)
    Take it from the folds of your garment^(Z) and destroy them!

¹² But God is my King^(AA) from long ago;
    he brings salvation^(AB) on the earth.

¹³ It was you who split open the sea^(AC) by your power;
    you broke the heads of the monster^(AD) in the waters.
¹⁴ It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan^(AE)
    and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.^(AF)
15 It was you who opened up springs^(AG) and streams;
    you dried up^(AH) the ever-flowing rivers.
¹⁶ The day is yours, and yours also the night;
    you established the sun and moon.^(AI)
17 It was you who set all the boundaries^(AJ) of the earth;
    you made both summer and winter.^(AK)

¹⁸ Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
    how foolish people^(AL) have reviled your name.
¹⁹ Do not hand over the life of your dove^(AM) to wild beasts;
    do not forget the lives of your afflicted^(AN) people forever.
²⁰ Have regard for your covenant,^(AO)
    because haunts of violence fill the dark places^(AP) of the land.
²¹ Do not let the oppressed^(AQ) retreat in disgrace;
    may the poor and needy^(AR) praise your name.
²² Rise up,^(AS) O God, and defend your cause;
    remember how fools^(AT) mock you all day long.
²³ Do not ignore the clamor^(AU) of your adversaries,^(AV)
    the uproar^(AW) of your enemies,^(AX) which rises continually.

Lord my God, you are very great;
    you are clothed with splendor and majesty.^(B)

² The Lord wraps^(C) himself in light^(D) as with a garment;
    he stretches^(E) out the heavens^(F) like a tent^(G)
3     and lays the beams^(H) of his upper chambers on their waters.^(I)
He makes the clouds^(J) his chariot^(K)
    and rides on the wings of the wind.^(L)
4 He makes winds his messengers,^[a](M)
    flames of fire^(N) his servants.

⁵ He set the earth^(O) on its foundations;^(P)
    it can never be moved.
⁶ You covered it^(Q) with the watery depths^(R) as with a garment;
    the waters stood^(S) above the mountains.
⁷ But at your rebuke^(T) the waters fled,
    at the sound of your thunder^(U) they took to flight;
⁸ they flowed over the mountains,
    they went down into the valleys,
    to the place you assigned^(V) for them.
⁹ You set a boundary^(W) they cannot cross;
    never again will they cover the earth.

¹⁰ He makes springs^(X) pour water into the ravines;
    it flows between the mountains.
¹¹ They give water^(Y) to all the beasts of the field;
    the wild donkeys^(Z) quench their thirst.
¹² The birds of the sky^(AA) nest by the waters;
    they sing among the branches.^(AB)
13 He waters the mountains^(AC) from his upper chambers;^(AD)
    the land is satisfied by the fruit of his work.^(AE)
14 He makes grass grow^(AF) for the cattle,
    and plants for people to cultivate—
    bringing forth food^(AG) from the earth:
¹⁵ wine^(AH) that gladdens human hearts,
    oil^(AI) to make their faces shine,
    and bread that sustains^(AJ) their hearts.
¹⁶ The trees of the Lord^(AK) are well watered,
    the cedars of Lebanon^(AL) that he planted.
¹⁷ There the birds^(AM) make their nests;
    the stork has its home in the junipers.
¹⁸ The high mountains belong to the wild goats;^(AN)
    the crags are a refuge for the hyrax.^(AO)

¹⁹ He made the moon to mark the seasons,^(AP)
    and the sun^(AQ) knows when to go down.
²⁰ You bring darkness,^(AR) it becomes night,^(AS)
    and all the beasts of the forest^(AT) prowl.
²¹ The lions roar for their prey^(AU)
    and seek their food from God.^(AV)
22 The sun rises, and they steal away;
    they return and lie down in their dens.^(AW)
23 Then people go out to their work,^(AX)
    to their labor until evening.^(AY)

²⁴ How many are your works,^(AZ) Lord!
    In wisdom you made^(BA) them all;
    the earth is full of your creatures.^(BB)
25 There is the sea,^(BC) vast and spacious,
    teeming with creatures beyond number—
    living things both large and small.^(BD)
26 There the ships^(BE) go to and fro,
    and Leviathan,^(BF) which you formed to frolic^(BG) there.^(BH)

²⁷ All creatures look to you
    to give them their food^(BI) at the proper time.
²⁸ When you give it to them,
    they gather it up;
when you open your hand,
    they are satisfied^(BJ) with good things.
²⁹ When you hide your face,^(BK)
    they are terrified;
when you take away their breath,
    they die and return to the dust.^(BL)
30 When you send your Spirit,^(BM)
    they are created,
    and you renew the face of the ground.

³¹ May the glory of the Lord^(BN) endure forever;
    may the Lord rejoice in his works^(BO)—
³² he who looks at the earth, and it trembles,^(BP)
    who touches the mountains,^(BQ) and they smoke.^(BR)

³³ I will sing^(BS) to the Lord all my life;
    I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
³⁴ May my meditation be pleasing to him,
    as I rejoice^(BT) in the Lord.
³⁵ But may sinners vanish^(BU) from the earth
    and the wicked be no more.^(BV)

³ May the Lord bless you from Zion,^(G)
    he who is the Maker of heaven^(H) and earth.

14 The wise woman builds her house,^(A)
    but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.

² Whoever fears the Lord walks uprightly,
    but those who despise him are devious in their ways.

³ A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride,^(B)
    but the lips of the wise protect them.^(C)

⁴ Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty,
    but from the strength of an ox^(D) come abundant harvests.

⁵ An honest witness does not deceive,
    but a false witness pours out lies.^(E)

⁶ The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none,
    but knowledge comes easily to the discerning.^(F)

⁷ Stay away from a fool,
    for you will not find knowledge on their lips.

⁸ The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways,^(G)
    but the folly of fools is deception.^(H)

⁹ Fools mock at making amends for sin,
    but goodwill is found among the upright.

¹⁰ Each heart knows its own bitterness,
    and no one else can share its joy.

¹¹ The house of the wicked will be destroyed,^(I)
    but the tent of the upright will flourish.^(J)

¹² There is a way that appears to be right,^(K)
    but in the end it leads to death.^(L)

¹³ Even in laughter^(M) the heart may ache,
    and rejoicing may end in grief.

¹⁴ The faithless will be fully repaid for their ways,^(N)
    and the good rewarded for theirs.^(O)

¹⁵ The simple believe anything,
    but the prudent give thought to their steps.^(P)

¹⁶ The wise fear the Lord and shun evil,^(Q)
    but a fool^(R) is hotheaded and yet feels secure.

¹⁷ A quick-tempered person^(S) does foolish things,^(T)
    and the one who devises evil schemes is hated.^(U)

¹⁸ The simple inherit folly,
    but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

¹⁹ Evildoers will bow down in the presence of the good,
    and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.^(V)

²⁰ The poor are shunned even by their neighbors,
    but the rich have many friends.^(W)

²¹ It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor,^(X)
    but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.^(Y)

²² Do not those who plot evil go astray?^(Z)
    But those who plan what is good find^[a] love and faithfulness.

²³ All hard work brings a profit,
    but mere talk leads only to poverty.

²⁴ The wealth of the wise is their crown,
    but the folly of fools yields folly.^(AA)

²⁵ A truthful witness saves lives,
    but a false witness is deceitful.^(AB)

²⁶ Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress,^(AC)
    and for their children it will be a refuge.^(AD)

²⁷ The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,^(AE)
    turning a person from the snares of death.^(AF)

²⁸ A large population is a king’s glory,
    but without subjects a prince is ruined.^(AG)

²⁹ Whoever is patient has great understanding,^(AH)
    but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.^(AI)

³⁰ A heart at peace gives life to the body,
    but envy rots the bones.^(AJ)

³¹ Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker,^(AK)
    but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.^(AL)

³² When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down,^(AM)
    but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God.^(AN)

³³ Wisdom reposes in the heart of the discerning^(AO)
    and even among fools she lets herself be known.^[b]

³⁴ Righteousness exalts a nation,^(AP)
    but sin condemns any people.

³⁵ A king delights in a wise servant,
    but a shameful servant arouses his fury.^(AQ)
