Psalm 92

Psalm 92^[a]

A psalm. A song. For the Sabbath day.

¹It is good to praise the Lord
    and make music^(A) to your name,^(B) O Most High,^(C)
²proclaiming your love in the morning^(D)
    and your faithfulness at night,
³to the music of the ten-stringed lyre^(E)
    and the melody of the harp.^(F)

⁴For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord;
    I sing for joy^(G) at what your hands have done.^(H)
⁵How great are your works,^(I) Lord,
    how profound your thoughts!^(J)
⁶Senseless people^(K) do not know,
    fools do not understand,
⁷that though the wicked spring up like grass
    and all evildoers flourish,
    they will be destroyed forever.^(L)

⁸But you, Lord, are forever exalted.

⁹For surely your enemies^(M), Lord,
    surely your enemies will perish;
    all evildoers will be scattered.^(N)
¹⁰You have exalted my horn^[b]^(O) like that of a wild ox;^(P)
    fine oils^(Q) have been poured on me.
¹¹My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries;
    my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes.^(R)

¹²The righteous will flourish^(S) like a palm tree,
    they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;^(T)
¹³planted in the house of the Lord,
    they will flourish in the courts of our God.^(U)
¹⁴They will still bear fruit^(V) in old age,
    they will stay fresh and green,
¹⁵proclaiming, “The Lord is upright;
    he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.^(W)”

Blessings for Obedience

28 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow^(A) all his commands^(B) I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.^(C) ²All these blessings will come on you^(D) and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:

³You will be blessed^(E) in the city and blessed in the country.^(F)

⁴The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.^(G)

⁵Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.

⁶You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.^(H)

⁷The Lord will grant that the enemies^(I) who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.^(J)

⁸The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless^(K) you in the land he is giving you.

⁹The Lord will establish you as his holy people,^(L) as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands^(M) of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him. ¹⁰Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name^(N) of the Lord, and they will fear you. ¹¹The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock^(O) and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.^(P)

¹²The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse^(Q) of his bounty,^(R) to send rain^(S) on your land in season and to bless^(T) all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.^(U) ¹³The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow^(V) them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.^(W) ¹⁴Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left,^(X) following other gods and serving them.

Instructions for Christian Living

¹⁷So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer^(A) live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.^(B) ¹⁸They are darkened in their understanding^(C) and separated from the life of God^(D) because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.^(E) ¹⁹Having lost all sensitivity,^(F) they have given themselves over^(G) to sensuality^(H) so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.

²⁰That, however, is not the way of life you learned ²¹when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. ²²You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off^(I) your old self,^(J) which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;^(K) ²³to be made new in the attitude of your minds;^(L) ²⁴and to put on^(M) the new self,^(N) created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.^(O)

²⁵Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully^(P) to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.^(Q) ²⁶“In your anger do not sin”^[a]:^(R) Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, ²⁷and do not give the devil a foothold.^(S) ²⁸Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work,^(T) doing something useful with their own hands,^(U) that they may have something to share with those in need.^(V)

²⁹Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,^(W) but only what is helpful for building others up^(X) according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. ³⁰And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,^(Y) with whom you were sealed^(Z) for the day of redemption.^(AA) ³¹Get rid of^(AB) all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.^(AC) ³²Be kind and compassionate to one another,^(AD) forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.^(AE) 5 ¹Follow God’s example,^(AF) therefore, as dearly loved children^(AG) ²and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us^(AH) and gave himself up for us^(AI) as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.^(AJ)
