12 (A)So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

13 Return, O Lord!
How long?
And (B)have compassion on Your servants.
14 Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
(C)That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!
15 Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us,
The years in which we have seen evil.
16 Let (D)Your work appear to Your servants,
And Your glory to their children.
17 (E)And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And (F)establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands.

I will also visit destruction on the altars of (A)Bethel;
And the horns of the altar shall be cut off
And fall to the ground.

Hear this word, you (E)cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria,
Who oppress the (F)poor,
Who crush the needy,
Who say to [b]your husbands, “Bring wine, let us (G)drink!”
(H)The Lord God has sworn by His holiness:
“Behold, the days shall come upon you
When He will take you away (I)with fishhooks,
And your posterity with fishhooks.
(J)You will go out through broken walls,
Each one straight ahead of her,
And you will [c]be cast into Harmon,”
Says the Lord.

“Come(K) to Bethel and transgress,
At (L)Gilgal multiply transgression;
(M)Bring your sacrifices every morning,
(N)Your tithes every three [d]days.
(O)Offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven,
Proclaim and announce (P)the freewill offerings;
For this you love,
You children of Israel!”

Defilement Comes from Within(A)

15 Then (B)the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying, (C)“Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”

He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God commanded, saying, (D)‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, (E)‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, (F)“Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”— then he need not honor his father [a]or mother.’ Thus you have made the [b]commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. (G)Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:

‘These(H) people [c]draw near to Me with their mouth,
And honor Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
And in vain they worship Me,
(I)Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

That Which Defiles(A)

15 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”(B)

Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[a](C) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[b](D) But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
    their teachings are merely human rules.(E)[c](F)
