Psalm 63

Psalm 63^[a]

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.

¹You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,^(A)
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.^(B)

²I have seen you in the sanctuary^(C)
    and beheld your power and your glory.^(D)
³Because your love is better than life,^(E)
    my lips will glorify you.
⁴I will praise you as long as I live,^(F)
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.^(G)
⁵I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;^(H)
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

⁶On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.^(I)
⁷Because you are my help,^(J)
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.^(K)
⁸I cling to you;^(L)
    your right hand upholds me.^(M)

⁹Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;^(N)
they will go down to the depths of the earth.^(O)
¹⁰They will be given over to the sword^(P)
and become food for jackals.^(Q)

¹¹But the king will rejoice in God;
all who swear by God will glory in him,^(R)
while the mouths of liars will be silenced.^(S)

²Abram had become very wealthy^(A) in livestock^(B) and in silver and gold.

³From the Negev^(C) he went from place to place until he came to Bethel,^(D) to the place between Bethel and Ai^(E) where his tent had been earlier ⁴and where he had first built an altar.^(F) There Abram called on the name of the Lord.^(G)

⁵Now Lot,^(H) who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. ⁶But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.^(I) ⁷And quarreling^(J) arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites^(K) and Perizzites^(L) were also living in the land^(M) at that time.

⁸So Abram said to Lot,^(N) “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me,^(O) or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives.^(P) ⁹Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”^(Q)

¹⁰Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain^(R) of the Jordan toward Zoar^(S) was well watered, like the garden of the Lord,^(T) like the land of Egypt.^(U) (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom^(V) and Gomorrah.)^(W) ¹¹So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: ¹²Abram lived in the land of Canaan,^(X) while Lot^(Y) lived among the cities of the plain^(Z) and pitched his tents near Sodom.^(AA) ¹³Now the people of Sodom^(AB) were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.^(AC)

¹⁴The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.^(AD) ¹⁵All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring^[a] forever.^(AE) ¹⁶I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.^(AF) ¹⁷Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land,^(AG) for I am giving it to you.”^(AH)
