Psalm 62

New International Version

Psalm 62^[a]

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

¹Truly my soul finds rest^(A) in God;^(B)
my salvation comes from him.
²Truly he is my rock^(C) and my salvation;^(D)
he is my fortress,^(E) I will never be shaken.^(F)

³How long will you assault me?
    Would all of you throw me down—
    this leaning wall,^(G) this tottering fence?
⁴Surely they intend to topple me
    from my lofty place;
    they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
    but in their hearts they curse.^[b]^(H)

⁵Yes, my soul, find rest in God;^(I)
    my hope comes from him.
⁶Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
⁷My salvation and my honor depend on God^[c];
    he is my mighty rock, my refuge.^(J)
⁸Trust in him at all times, you people;^(K)
    pour out your hearts to him,^(L)
    for God is our refuge.

⁹Surely the lowborn^(M) are but a breath,^(N)
    the highborn are but a lie.
If weighed on a balance,^(O) they are nothing;
    together they are only a breath.
¹⁰Do not trust in extortion^(P)
    or put vain hope in stolen goods;^(Q)
though your riches increase,
    do not set your heart on them.^(R)

¹¹One thing God has spoken,
    two things I have heard:
“Power belongs to you, God,^(S)
¹²    and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”;^(T)
and, “You reward everyone
    according to what they have done.”^(U)

Amos 6:8-14

New International Version

The Lord Abhors the Pride of Israel

⁸The Sovereign Lord has sworn by himself^(A)—the Lord God Almighty declares:

“I abhor^(B) the pride of Jacob^(C)
and detest his fortresses;^(D)
I will deliver up^(E) the city
and everything in it.^(F)”

⁹If ten^(G) people are left in one house, they too will die. ¹⁰And if the relative who comes to carry the bodies out of the house to burn them^[a]^(H) asks anyone who might be hiding there, “Is anyone else with you?” and he says, “No,” then he will go on to say, “Hush!^(I) We must not mention the name of the Lord.”

¹¹For the Lord has given the command,
and he will smash^(J) the great house^(K) into pieces
and the small house into bits.^(L)

¹²Do horses run on the rocky crags?
    Does one plow the sea^[b] with oxen?
But you have turned justice into poison^(M)
    and the fruit of righteousness^(N) into bitterness^(O)—
¹³you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar^[c]
    and say, “Did we not take Karnaim^[d] by our own strength?^(P)”

¹⁴For the Lord God Almighty declares,
“I will stir up a nation^(Q) against you, Israel,
that will oppress you all the way
from Lebo Hamath^(R) to the valley of the Arabah.^(S)”

To the Church in Laodicea

¹⁴“To the angel of the church in Laodicea^(A) write:

These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness,^(B) the ruler of God’s creation.^(C) ¹⁵I know your deeds,^(D) that you are neither cold nor hot.^(E) I wish you were either one or the other! ¹⁶So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. ¹⁷You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’^(F) But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.^(G) ¹⁸I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire,^(H) so you can become rich; and white clothes^(I) to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness;^(J) and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

¹⁹Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.^(K) So be earnest and repent.^(L) ²⁰Here I am! I stand at the door^(M) and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,^(N) I will come in^(O) and eat with that person, and they with me.

²¹To the one who is victorious,^(P) I will give the right to sit with me on my throne,^(Q) just as I was victorious^(R) and sat down with my Father on his throne. ²²Whoever has ears, let them hear^(S) what the Spirit says to the churches.”
