The New Stone Tablets

34 The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones,^(A) and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets,^(B) which you broke.^{(C) 2} Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai.^(D) Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. ³ No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain;^(E) not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.”

⁴ So Moses chiseled^(F) out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands.^{(G) 5} Then the Lord came down in the cloud^(H) and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord.^{(I) 6} And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate^(J) and gracious God, slow to anger,^(K) abounding in love^(L) and faithfulness,^{(M) 7} maintaining love to thousands,^(N) and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.^(O) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished;^(P) he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”^(Q)

⁸ Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. ⁹ “Lord,” he said, “if I have found favor^(R) in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us.^(S) Although this is a stiff-necked^(T) people, forgive our wickedness and our sin,^(U) and take us as your inheritance.”^(V)

¹⁰ Then the Lord said: “I am making a covenant^(W) with you. Before all your people I will do wonders^(X) never before done in any nation in all the world.^(Y) The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you. ¹¹ Obey what I command^(Z) you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.^{(AA) 12} Be careful not to make a treaty^(AB) with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare^(AC) among you. ¹³ Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles.^{[a](AD) 14} Do not worship any other god,^(AE) for the Lord, whose name^(AF) is Jealous, is a jealous God.^(AG)

¹⁵ “Be careful not to make a treaty^(AH) with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute^(AI) themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices.^{(AJ) 16} And when you choose some of their daughters as wives^(AK) for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods,^(AL) they will lead your sons to do the same.

¹⁷ “Do not make any idols.^(AM)

¹³ And we also thank God continually^(A) because, when you received the word of God,^(B) which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. ¹⁴ For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators^(C) of God’s churches in Judea,^(D) which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people^(E) the same things those churches suffered from the Jews ¹⁵ who killed the Lord Jesus^(F) and the prophets^(G) and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone ¹⁶ in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles^(H) so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit.^(I) The wrath of God has come upon them at last.^[a]

Paul’s Longing to See the Thessalonians

¹⁷ But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought),^(J) out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.^{(K) 18} For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan^(L) blocked our way.^{(M) 19} For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown^(N) in which we will glory^(O) in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes?^(P) Is it not you? ²⁰ Indeed, you are our glory^(Q) and joy.

Murder^(A)

²¹ “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,^[a](B) and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ ²² But I tell you that anyone who is angry^(C) with a brother or sister^[b][c] will be subject to judgment.^(D) Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’^[d] is answerable to the court.^(E) And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.^(F)

²³ “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, ²⁴ leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

²⁵ “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. ²⁶ Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
