Description of a Citizen of Zion.

A Psalm of David.

15 Lord, who may reside (A)in Your tent?
Who may settle on Your (B)holy hill?
One who (C)walks with integrity, practices righteousness,
And (D)speaks truth in his heart.
He (E)does not slander [a]with his tongue,
Nor (F)do evil to his neighbor,
Nor (G)bring shame on his friend;
A despicable person is despised in his eyes,
But he (H)honors those who fear the Lord;
He (I)takes an oath to his own detriment, and does not change;
He (J)does not [b]lend his money [c]at interest,
Nor (K)does he take a bribe against the innocent.
(L)One who does these things will never be shaken.

17 (A)You shall not pervert the justice [a]due a stranger or [b]an orphan, nor (B)seize a widow’s garment as a [c]pledge. 18 But you are to remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and that the Lord your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.

19 (C)When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you are not to go back to get it; it shall belong (D)to the stranger, the [d]orphan, and to the widow, in order that the Lord your God (E)may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 (F)When you beat the olives off your olive tree, you are not to search through the branches [e]again; that shall be left (G)for the stranger, the [f]orphan, and for the widow.

21 “When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you are not to [g]go over it again; that shall be left for the stranger, the [h]orphan, and the widow. 22 And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.

Various Laws

25 (H)If there is a dispute between people and they go to [i]court, and [j]the judges decide their case, (I)and they declare the righteous innocent and pronounce the wicked guilty, then it shall be if the wicked person [k](J)deserves to be beaten, the judge shall then make him lie down and have him beaten in his presence with the number of lashes according to his [l]wrongful act. (K)He may have him beaten forty times, but not more, so that he does not have him beaten with many more lashes than these, and that your brother does not (L)become contemptible in your eyes.

(M)You shall not muzzle the ox while it is threshing.

Concerning Elders

17 (A)The elders who (B)lead well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who (C)work hard [a]at preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “(D)You shall not muzzle the ox while it is threshing,” and “(E)The laborer is worthy of his wages.” 19 Do not accept an accusation against an (F)elder except on the basis of (G)two or three witnesses. 20 Those who continue in sin, (H)rebuke in the presence of all, (I)so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning. 21 (J)I solemnly exhort you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality. 22 (K)Do not lay hands upon anyone too quickly and [b]thereby share (L)responsibility for the sins of others; keep yourself [c]free from sin.

23 Do not go on drinking only water, but (M)use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.

24 The sins of some people are quite evident, going before them to judgment; for others, their sins (N)follow after.
