Psalm 115

New International Version

Psalm 115^(A)

¹Not to us, Lord, not to us
but to your name be the glory,^(B)
because of your love and faithfulness.^(C)

²Why do the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”^(D)
³Our God is in heaven;^(E)
    he does whatever pleases him.^(F)
⁴But their idols are silver and gold,^(G)
    made by human hands.^(H)
⁵They have mouths, but cannot speak,^(I)
    eyes, but cannot see.
⁶They have ears, but cannot hear,
    noses, but cannot smell.
⁷They have hands, but cannot feel,
    feet, but cannot walk,
    nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
⁸Those who make them will be like them,
    and so will all who trust in them.

⁹All you Israelites, trust^(J) in the Lord—
    he is their help and shield.
¹⁰House of Aaron,^(K) trust in the Lord—
    he is their help and shield.
¹¹You who fear him,^(L) trust in the Lord—
    he is their help and shield.

¹²The Lord remembers^(M) us and will bless us:^(N)
    He will bless his people Israel,
    he will bless the house of Aaron,
¹³he will bless those who fear^(O) the Lord—
    small and great alike.

¹⁴May the Lord cause you to flourish,^(P)
both you and your children.
¹⁵May you be blessed by the Lord,
the Maker of heaven^(Q) and earth.

¹⁶The highest heavens belong to the Lord,^(R)
    but the earth he has given^(S) to mankind.
¹⁷It is not the dead^(T) who praise the Lord,
    those who go down to the place of silence;
¹⁸it is we who extol the Lord,^(U)
    both now and forevermore.^(V)

¹⁸“And I, because of what they have planned and done,^(A) am about to come^[a] and gather the people of all nations^(B) and languages, and they will come and see my glory.^(C)

¹⁹“I will set a sign^(D) among them, and I will send some of those who survive^(E) to the nations—to Tarshish,^(F) to the Libyans^[b] and Lydians^(G) (famous as archers), to Tubal^(H) and Greece,^(I) and to the distant islands^(J) that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory.^(K) They will proclaim my glory among the nations. ²⁰And they will bring^(L) all your people, from all the nations, to my holy mountain^(M) in Jerusalem as an offering to the Lord—on horses, in chariots and wagons, and on mules and camels,”^(N) says the Lord. “They will bring them, as the Israelites bring their grain offerings, to the temple of the Lord in ceremonially clean vessels.^(O) ²¹And I will select some of them also to be priests^(P) and Levites,” says the Lord.

²²“As the new heavens and the new earth^(Q) that I make will endure before me,” declares the Lord, “so will your name and descendants endure.^(R) ²³From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath^(S) to another, all mankind will come and bow down^(T) before me,” says the Lord. ²⁴“And they will go out and look on the dead bodies^(U) of those who rebelled^(V) against me; the worms^(W) that eat them will not die, the fire that burns them will not be quenched,^(X) and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”

The Narrow Door

²²Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.^(A) ²³Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?”

He said to them, ²⁴“Make every effort to enter through the narrow door,^(B) because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. ²⁵Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’

“But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’^(C)

²⁶“Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’

²⁷“But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’^(D)

²⁸“There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth,^(E) when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. ²⁹People will come from east and west^(F) and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. ³⁰Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.”^(G)
