Psalm 108^[a]^(A)^(B)

A song. A psalm of David.

¹My heart, O God, is steadfast;^(C)
    I will sing^(D) and make music with all my soul.
²Awake, harp and lyre!^(E)
    I will awaken the dawn.
³I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
    I will sing of you among the peoples.
⁴For great is your love,^(F) higher than the heavens;
    your faithfulness^(G) reaches to the skies.^(H)
⁵Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;^(I)
    let your glory be over all the earth.^(J)

⁶Save us and help us with your right hand,^(K)
    that those you love may be delivered.
⁷God has spoken^(L) from his sanctuary:^(M)
    “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem^(N)
    and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.^(O)
⁸Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim is my helmet,
    Judah^(P) is my scepter.
⁹Moab^(Q) is my washbasin,
    on Edom^(R) I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia^(S) I shout in triumph.”

¹⁰Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
¹¹Is it not you, God, you who have rejected us
    and no longer go out with our armies?^(T)
¹²Give us aid against the enemy,
    for human help is worthless.^(U)
¹³With God we will gain the victory,
    and he will trample down^(V) our enemies.

Samuel Anoints Saul

9 There was a Benjamite,^(A) a man of standing,^(B) whose name was Kish^(C) son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. ²Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome^(D) a young man as could be found^(E) anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller^(F) than anyone else.

³Now the donkeys^(G) belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys.” ⁴So he passed through the hill^(H) country of Ephraim and through the area around Shalisha,^(I) but they did not find them. They went on into the district of Shaalim, but the donkeys^(J) were not there. Then he passed through the territory of Benjamin, but they did not find them.

⁵When they reached the district of Zuph,^(K) Saul said to the servant who was with him, “Come, let’s go back, or my father will stop thinking about the donkeys and start worrying^(L) about us.”

⁶But the servant replied, “Look, in this town there is a man of God;^(M) he is highly respected, and everything^(N) he says comes true. Let’s go there now. Perhaps he will tell us what way to take.”

⁷Saul said to his servant, “If we go, what can we give the man? The food in our sacks is gone. We have no gift^(O) to take to the man of God. What do we have?”

⁸The servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have a quarter of a shekel^[a] of silver. I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us what way to take.” ⁹(Formerly in Israel, if someone went to inquire^(P) of God, they would say, “Come, let us go to the seer,” because the prophet of today used to be called a seer.)^(Q)

¹⁰“Good,” Saul said to his servant. “Come, let’s go.” So they set out for the town where the man of God was.

¹¹As they were going up the hill to the town, they met some young women coming out to draw^(R) water, and they asked them, “Is the seer here?”

¹²“He is,” they answered. “He’s ahead of you. Hurry now; he has just come to our town today, for the people have a sacrifice^(S) at the high place.^(T) ¹³As soon as you enter the town, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not begin eating until he comes, because he must bless^(U) the sacrifice; afterward, those who are invited will eat. Go up now; you should find him about this time.”

¹⁴They went up to the town, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel, coming toward them on his way up to the high place.

Jesus and Beelzebul^(A)^(B)

¹⁴Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.^(C) ¹⁵But some of them said, “By Beelzebul,^(D) the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”^(E) ¹⁶Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.^(F)

¹⁷Jesus knew their thoughts^(G) and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. ¹⁸If Satan^(H) is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. ¹⁹Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. ²⁰But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,^(I) then the kingdom of God^(J) has come upon you.

²¹“When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. ²²But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.

²³“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.^(K)

²⁴“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ ²⁵When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. ²⁶Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”^(L)

²⁷As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”^(M)

²⁸He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God^(N) and obey it.”^(O)
