10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning(A) them. Then the glory of the Lord(B) appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt?(C) How long will they refuse to believe in me,(D) in spite of all the signs(E) I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague(F) and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation(G) greater and stronger than they.”(H)

13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.(I) 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard(J) that you, Lord, are with these people(K) and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face,(L) that your cloud stays over them,(M) and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.(N) 15 If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath,(O) so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’(P)

17 “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.(Q) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’(R) 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive(S) the sin of these people,(T) just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”(U)

20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them,(V) as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live(W) and as surely as the glory of the Lord(X) fills the whole earth,(Y) 22 not one of those who saw my glory and the signs(Z) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times(AA) 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath(AB) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt(AC) will ever see it.(AD) 24 But because my servant Caleb(AE) has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly,(AF) I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.(AG)

Warnings From Israel’s History

10 For I do not want you to be ignorant(A) of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud(B) and that they all passed through the sea.(C) They were all baptized into(D) Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food(E) and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock(F) that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.(G)

Now these things occurred as examples(H) to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters,(I) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”[a](J) We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.(K) We should not test Christ,[b](L) as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.(M) 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did(N)—and were killed(O) by the destroying angel.(P)

11 These things happened to them as examples(Q) and were written down as warnings for us,(R) on whom the culmination of the ages has come.(S) 12 So, if you think you are standing firm,(T) be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation[c] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful;(U) he will not let you be tempted[d] beyond what you can bear.(V) But when you are tempted,[e] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
