A Prayer for Help, and Praise for Its Answer.

A Psalm of David.

28 To You, Lord, I call;
My (A)rock, do not be deaf to me,
For if You (B)are silent to me,
I will become like those who (C)go down to the pit.
Hear the (D)sound of my pleadings when I cry to You for help,
When I (E)raise my hands (F)toward [a]Your holy (G)sanctuary.
(H)Do not drag me away with the wicked
And with those who practice injustice,
Who (I)speak peace with their neighbors,
While evil is in their hearts.
Give back to them (J)according to their work and according to the evil of their practices;
Give back to them according to the work of their hands;
Repay them what is due them.
Because they (K)do not regard the works of the Lord
Nor the deeds of His hands,
He will tear them down and not build them up.

Blessed be the Lord,
Because He (L)has heard the sound of my pleading.
The Lord is my (M)strength and my (N)shield;
My heart (O)trusts in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore (P)my heart triumphs,
And with (Q)my song I shall thank Him.
The Lord is [b]their (R)strength,
And He is a refuge of (S)salvation to His anointed.
(T)Save Your people and bless (U)Your inheritance;
Be their (V)shepherd also, and (W)carry them forever.

The Voice of the Lord in the Storm.

A Psalm of David.

29 (X)Ascribe to the Lord, [c]sons of the mighty,
Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory [d]due His name;
Worship the Lord (Y)in holy attire.

The (Z)voice of the Lord is on the waters;
The God of glory (AA)thunders,
The Lord is over [e](AB)many waters.
The voice of the Lord is (AC)powerful,
The voice of the Lord is majestic.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
Yes, the Lord breaks (AD)the cedars of Lebanon in pieces.
He makes Lebanon (AE)skip like a calf,
And (AF)Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord divides [f]flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord [g]shakes the wilderness;
The Lord shakes the wilderness of (AG)Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord makes (AH)the deer give birth
And strips the forests bare;
And (AI)in His temple everything says, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sat as King at the (AJ)flood;
Yes, the Lord sits as (AK)King forever.
11 [h]The Lord will give (AL)strength to His people;
[i]The Lord will bless His people with (AM)peace.

Thanksgiving for Rescue from Death.

A Psalm; a Song at the Dedication of the House. A Psalm of David.

30 I will (AN)exalt You, Lord, for You have (AO)lifted me up,
And have not let my (AP)enemies rejoice over me.
Lord my God,
I (AQ)cried to You for help, and You (AR)healed me.
Lord, You have (AS)brought up my soul from [j]Sheol;
You have kept me alive, [k]that I would not (AT)go down to the pit.
(AU)Sing praise to the Lord, you (AV)His godly ones,
And (AW)praise the mention of His holiness.
For (AX)His anger is but for a moment,
His (AY)favor is for a lifetime;
Weeping may (AZ)last for the night,
But a shout of joy comes in the morning.

Now as for me, I said in my prosperity,
“I will (BA)never be moved.”
Lord, by Your favor You have made my mountain to stand strong;
You (BB)hid Your face, I was dismayed.
To You, Lord, I called,
And to the Lord I pleaded for compassion:
“What gain is there in my blood, if I (BC)go down to the pit?
Will the (BD)dust praise You? Will it declare Your faithfulness?

10 (BE)Hear, Lord, and be gracious to me;
Lord, be my (BF)helper.”
11 You have turned (BG)my mourning into dancing for me;
You have (BH)untied my sackcloth and encircled me with (BI)joy,
12 That my [l](BJ)soul may sing praise to You and not be silent.
Lord my God, I will (BK)give thanks to You forever.

A Psalm of Complaint and of Praise.

For the music director. A Psalm of David.

31 (BL)In You, Lord, I have taken refuge;
Let me never (BM)be [m]put to shame;
(BN)In Your righteousness rescue me.
(BO)Incline Your ear to me, rescue me quickly;
Be a (BP)rock of [n]strength for me,
A [o]stronghold to save me.
For You are my rock and (BQ)my fortress;
For the (BR)sake of Your name You will lead me and guide me.
You will (BS)pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me,
For You are my (BT)strength.
(BU)Into Your hand I entrust my spirit;
You have (BV)redeemed me, Lord, (BW)God of [p]truth.

I hate those who (BX)devote themselves to worthless [q]idols,
But I (BY)trust in the Lord.
I will (BZ)rejoice and be glad in Your faithfulness,
Because You have (CA)seen my misery;
You have known the troubles of my soul,
And You have not (CB)handed me over to the enemy;
You have set my feet in a large place.

Be gracious to me, Lord, for (CC)I am in distress;
My (CD)eye is wasted away from grief, (CE)my soul and my body too.
10 For my life is spent with (CF)sorrow
And my years with sighing;
My (CG)strength has failed because of my guilt,
And (CH)my [r]body has wasted away.
11 Because of all my adversaries, I have become a (CI)disgrace,
Especially to my (CJ)neighbors,
And an object of dread to my acquaintances;
Those who see me in the street flee from me.
12 I am (CK)forgotten like a dead person, out of mind;
I am like a broken vessel.
13 For I have heard the [s](CL)slander of many,
(CM)Terror is on every side;
While they (CN)took counsel together against me,
They (CO)schemed to take away my life.

14 But as for me, I trust in You, Lord,
I say, “(CP)You are my God.”
15 My (CQ)times are in Your hand;
(CR)Rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me.
16 Make Your (CS)face shine upon Your servant;
(CT)Save me in Your faithfulness.
17 Let me not be (CU)put to shame, Lord, for I call upon You;
Let the (CV)wicked be put to shame, let them (CW)be silent in [t]Sheol.
18 Let the (CX)lying lips be speechless,
Which (CY)speak arrogantly against the righteous
With pride and contempt.

19 How great is Your (CZ)goodness,
Which You have stored up for those who fear You,
Which You have performed for those who (DA)take refuge in You,
(DB)Before the sons of mankind!
20 You hide them in the (DC)secret place of Your presence from the (DD)conspiracies of mankind;
You keep them secretly in a [u]shelter from the (DE)strife of tongues.
21 (DF)Blessed be the Lord,
For He has shown His (DG)marvelous faithfulness to me in a besieged (DH)city.
22 As for me, (DI)I said in my alarm,
“I am (DJ)cut off from Your eyes”;
Nevertheless You (DK)heard the sound of my pleadings
When I called to You for help.

23 Love the Lord, all (DL)His godly ones!
The Lord (DM)watches over the faithful
But fully (DN)repays the one who acts arrogantly.
24 (DO)Be strong and let your heart take courage,
All you who wait for the Lord.

Blessedness of Forgiveness and of Trust in God.

A Psalm of David. A [v]Maskil.

32 (DP)How blessed is he whose wrongdoing is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered!
How blessed is a person whose guilt the Lord (DQ)does not take into account,
And in whose spirit there is (DR)no deceit!

When (DS)I kept silent about my sin, (DT)my [w]body wasted away
Through my [x](DU)groaning all day long.
For day and night (DV)Your hand was heavy upon me;
My [y](DW)vitality failed as with the dry heat of summer. Selah
I (DX)acknowledged my sin to You,
And I (DY)did not hide my guilt;
I said, “(DZ)I will confess my wrongdoings to the Lord”;
And You (EA)forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah
Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to You [z](EB)in a time when You may be found;
Certainly (EC)in a flood of great waters, they will not reach him.
You are (ED)my hiding place; You (EE)keep me from trouble;
You surround me with [aa](EF)songs of deliverance. Selah

I will (EG)instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go;
I will advise you (EH)with My eye upon you.
Do not be (EI)like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding,
Whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check,
Otherwise they will not come near to you.
10 The (EJ)sorrows of the wicked are many,
But (EK)the one who trusts in the Lord, goodness will surround him.
11 Be (EL)glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous ones;
And shout for joy, all you who are (EM)upright in heart.

Praise to the Creator and Protector.

33 (EN)Sing for joy in the Lord, you righteous ones;
Praise is (EO)becoming to the upright.
Give thanks to the Lord with the (EP)lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a (EQ)harp of ten strings.
Sing to Him a (ER)new song;
Play skillfully with (ES)a shout of joy.
For the word of the Lord (ET)is right,
And all His work is done (EU)in faithfulness.
He (EV)loves righteousness and justice;
The (EW)earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

By the (EX)word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And (EY)by the breath of His mouth (EZ)all their [ab]lights.
He gathers the (FA)waters of the sea together [ac]as a heap;
He puts the depths in storehouses.
Let (FB)all the earth fear the Lord;
Let all the inhabitants of the world (FC)stand in awe of Him.
For (FD)He spoke, and it was done;
He commanded, and it [ad]stood firm.
10 The Lord (FE)nullifies the plan of nations;
He frustrates the plans of peoples.
11 The (FF)plan of the Lord stands forever,
The (FG)plans of His heart from generation to generation.
12 Blessed is the (FH)nation whose God is the Lord,
The people He has (FI)chosen for His own inheritance.

13 The Lord (FJ)looks from heaven;
He (FK)sees all the sons of mankind;
14 From (FL)His dwelling place He looks out
On all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 He who (FM)fashions [ae]the hearts of them all,
He who (FN)understands all their works.
16 (FO)The king is not saved by a mighty army;
A warrior is not rescued by great strength.
17 A (FP)horse is a false hope for victory;
Nor does it rescue anyone by its great strength.

18 Behold, (FQ)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who (FR)wait for His faithfulness,
19 To (FS)rescue their soul from death
And to keep them alive (FT)in famine.
20 Our soul (FU)waits for the Lord;
He is our (FV)help and our shield.
21 For our (FW)heart rejoices in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
22 Let Your favor, Lord, be upon us,
Just as we have waited for You.

The Lord, a Provider and the One Who Rescues Me.

A Psalm of David, when he pretended to be insane before [af]Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed.

34 I will (FX)bless the Lord at all times;
His (FY)praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul will (FZ)make its boast in the Lord;
The (GA)humble will hear it and rejoice.
(GB)Exalt the Lord with me,
And let’s (GC)exalt His name together.

I (GD)sought the Lord and He answered me,
And (GE)rescued me from all my fears.
They (GF)looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces will (GG)never be ashamed.
This wretched man cried out, and (GH)the Lord heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles.
The (GI)angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him,
And rescues them.

(GJ)Taste and see that the Lord is good;
How (GK)blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
Fear the Lord, you (GL)His saints;
For to those who fear Him there is (GM)no lack of anything.
10 The young lions do without and suffer hunger;
But they who seek the Lord will (GN)not lack any good thing.
11 (GO)Come, you children, listen to me;
(GP)I will teach you (GQ)the fear of the Lord.
12 (GR)Who is the person who desires life
And loves length of days, that he may (GS)see good?
13 Keep (GT)your tongue from evil
And your lips from speaking (GU)deceit.
14 (GV)Turn from evil and do good;
Seek peace and (GW)pursue it.

15 The (GX)eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,
And His ears are toward their cry for help.
16 The (GY)face of the Lord is against evildoers,
To (GZ)eliminate the memory of them from the earth.
17 The righteous (HA)cry out, and the Lord hears
And rescues them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord (HB)is near to the (HC)brokenhearted
And saves those who are [ag](HD)crushed in spirit.

19 (HE)The (HF)afflictions of the righteous are many,
But the Lord (HG)rescues him from them all.
20 He protects all his bones,
(HH)Not one of them is broken.
21 (HI)Evil will bring death to the wicked,
And those who hate the righteous will suffer for their guilt.
22 The Lord (HJ)redeems the souls of His servants,
And none of those who (HK)take refuge in Him will suffer for their guilt.

Prayer for Rescue from Enemies.

A Psalm of David.

35 Contend, Lord, with those who (HL)contend with me;
Fight against those who (HM)fight against me.
Take hold of [ah](HN)buckler and shield
And rise up as (HO)my help.
Draw also the spear and [ai]the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me;
Say to my soul, “I am (HP)your salvation.”
Let those be (HQ)ashamed and dishonored who seek my [aj]life;
Let those be (HR)turned back and humiliated who devise evil against me.
Let them be (HS)like chaff before the wind,
With the angel of the Lord driving them on.
Let their way be dark and (HT)slippery,
With the angel of the Lord pursuing them.
For (HU)they (HV)hid their net for me without cause;
Without cause they dug a pit for my soul.
Let (HW)destruction come upon him when he is unaware,
And (HX)let the net which he hid catch him;
Let him fall into that very (HY)destruction.

So my soul shall (HZ)rejoice in the Lord;
It shall (IA)rejoice in His salvation.
10 All my (IB)bones will say, “Lord, (IC)who is like You,
Who rescues the afflicted from one (ID)who is too strong for him,
And (IE)the afflicted and the poor from one who robs him?”
11 (IF)Malicious witnesses rise up;
They ask me things that I do not know.
12 They (IG)repay me evil for good,
To the bereavement of my soul.
13 But as for me, (IH)when they were sick, my (II)clothing was sackcloth;
I (IJ)humbled my soul with fasting,
But my (IK)prayer kept returning to [ak]me.
14 I went about as though it were my friend or brother;
I (IL)bowed down [al]in mourning, like one who mourns for a mother.
15 But (IM)at my [am]stumbling they rejoiced and gathered themselves together;
The [an](IN)afflicted people whom I did not know gathered together against me,
They [ao](IO)slandered me without ceasing.
16 Like godless jesters at a feast,
They (IP)gnashed at me with their teeth.

17 Lord, (IQ)how long will You look on?
Rescue my soul (IR)from their ravages,
My (IS)only life from the lions.
18 I will (IT)give You thanks in the great congregation;
I will (IU)praise You among a mighty people.
19 (IV)Do not let those who are wrongfully (IW)my enemies rejoice over me;
Nor let those (IX)who hate me for no reason [ap](IY)wink maliciously.
20 For they do not speak peace,
But they devise (IZ)deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.
21 They (JA)opened their mouth wide against me;
They said, “(JB)Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen it!”

22 (JC)You have seen it, Lord, (JD)do not keep silent;
Lord, (JE)do not be far from me.
23 (JF)Stir Yourself, and awake to my right
And to my cause, my God and my Lord.
24 (JG)Judge me, Lord my God, according to Your righteousness,
And (JH)do not let them rejoice over me.
25 Do not let them say in their heart, “(JI)Aha, our desire!”
Do not let them say, “We have (JJ)swallowed him up!”
26 May (JK)those be ashamed and altogether humiliated who rejoice at my distress;
May those who (JL)exalt themselves over me be (JM)clothed with shame and dishonor.

27 May those (JN)shout for joy and rejoice, who take delight in (JO)my vindication;
And (JP)may they say continually, “The Lord be exalted,
Who (JQ)delights in the prosperity of His servant.”
28 And (JR)my tongue shall proclaim Your righteousness
And Your praise all day long.

Wickedness of Humanity and Goodness of God.

For the music director. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord.

36 [aq]Wrongdoing speaks to the ungodly within [ar]his heart;
There is (JS)no fear of God before his eyes.
For it (JT)flatters him in his own eyes
Concerning the discovery of his wrongful deed and the hatred of it.
The (JU)words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit;
He has (JV)ceased to [as]be wise and to do good.
He (JW)plans wickedness on his bed;
He sets himself on a (JX)path that is not good;
He (JY)does not reject evil.

Your (JZ)mercy, Lord, [at]extends to the heavens,
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
Your (KA)righteousness is like the [au]mountains of God;
Your (KB)judgments are like the great deep.
Lord, You [av](KC)protect mankind and animals.
How (KD)precious is Your mercy, God!
And the sons of mankind (KE)take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
They (KF)drink their fill of the [aw]abundance of Your house;
And You allow them to drink from the (KG)river of Your delights.
For the (KH)fountain of life is with You;
In Your light we see light.

10 Prolong Your mercy to (KI)those who know You,
And Your (KJ)righteousness to the upright of heart.
11 May the foot of pride not come upon me,
And may the hand of the wicked not drive me away.
12 Those who do injustice have fallen there;
They have been thrust down and (KK)cannot rise.

    and plot to take my life.(DB)

14 But I trust(DC) in you, Lord;
    I say, “You are my God.”
15 My times(DD) are in your hands;
    deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
    from those who pursue me.
16 Let your face shine(DE) on your servant;
    save me in your unfailing love.(DF)
17 Let me not be put to shame,(DG) Lord,
    for I have cried out to you;
but let the wicked be put to shame
    and be silent(DH) in the realm of the dead.
18 Let their lying lips(DI) be silenced,
    for with pride and contempt
    they speak arrogantly(DJ) against the righteous.

19 How abundant are the good things(DK)
    that you have stored up for those who fear you,
that you bestow in the sight of all,(DL)
    on those who take refuge(DM) in you.
20 In the shelter(DN) of your presence you hide(DO) them
    from all human intrigues;(DP)
you keep them safe in your dwelling
    from accusing tongues.

21 Praise be to the Lord,(DQ)
    for he showed me the wonders of his love(DR)
    when I was in a city under siege.(DS)
22 In my alarm(DT) I said,
    “I am cut off(DU) from your sight!”
Yet you heard my cry(DV) for mercy
    when I called to you for help.

23 Love the Lord, all his faithful people!(DW)
    The Lord preserves those who are true to him,(DX)
    but the proud he pays back(DY) in full.
24 Be strong and take heart,(DZ)
    all you who hope in the Lord.

Psalm 32

Of David. A maskil.[i]

Blessed is the one
    whose transgressions are forgiven,
    whose sins are covered.(EA)
Blessed is the one
    whose sin the Lord does not count against them(EB)
    and in whose spirit is no deceit.(EC)

When I kept silent,(ED)
    my bones wasted away(EE)
    through my groaning(EF) all day long.
For day and night
    your hand was heavy(EG) on me;
my strength was sapped(EH)
    as in the heat of summer.[j]

Then I acknowledged my sin to you
    and did not cover up my iniquity.(EI)
I said, “I will confess(EJ)
    my transgressions(EK) to the Lord.”
And you forgave
    the guilt of my sin.(EL)

Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
    while you may be found;(EM)
surely the rising(EN) of the mighty waters(EO)
    will not reach them.(EP)
You are my hiding place;(EQ)
    you will protect me from trouble(ER)
    and surround me with songs of deliverance.(ES)

I will instruct(ET) you and teach you(EU) in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my loving eye on(EV) you.
Do not be like the horse or the mule,
    which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle(EW)
    or they will not come to you.
10 Many are the woes of the wicked,(EX)
    but the Lord’s unfailing love
    surrounds the one who trusts(EY) in him.

11 Rejoice in the Lord(EZ) and be glad, you righteous;
    sing, all you who are upright in heart!

Psalm 33

Sing joyfully(FA) to the Lord, you righteous;
    it is fitting(FB) for the upright(FC) to praise him.
Praise the Lord with the harp;(FD)
    make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.(FE)
Sing to him a new song;(FF)
    play skillfully, and shout for joy.(FG)

For the word of the Lord is right(FH) and true;(FI)
    he is faithful(FJ) in all he does.
The Lord loves righteousness and justice;(FK)
    the earth is full of his unfailing love.(FL)

By the word(FM) of the Lord the heavens were made,(FN)
    their starry host(FO) by the breath of his mouth.
He gathers the waters(FP) of the sea into jars[k];(FQ)
    he puts the deep into storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord;(FR)
    let all the people of the world(FS) revere him.(FT)
For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded,(FU) and it stood firm.

10 The Lord foils(FV) the plans(FW) of the nations;(FX)
    he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
11 But the plans of the Lord stand firm(FY) forever,
    the purposes(FZ) of his heart through all generations.

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,(GA)
    the people he chose(GB) for his inheritance.(GC)
13 From heaven the Lord looks down(GD)
    and sees all mankind;(GE)
14 from his dwelling place(GF) he watches
    all who live on earth—
15 he who forms(GG) the hearts of all,
    who considers everything they do.(GH)

16 No king is saved by the size of his army;(GI)
    no warrior escapes by his great strength.
17 A horse(GJ) is a vain hope for deliverance;
    despite all its great strength it cannot save.
18 But the eyes(GK) of the Lord are on those who fear him,
    on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,(GL)
19 to deliver them from death(GM)
    and keep them alive in famine.(GN)

20 We wait(GO) in hope for the Lord;
    he is our help and our shield.
21 In him our hearts rejoice,(GP)
    for we trust in his holy name.(GQ)
22 May your unfailing love(GR) be with us, Lord,
    even as we put our hope in you.

Psalm 34[l][m]

Of David. When he pretended to be insane(GS) before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he left.

I will extol the Lord at all times;(GT)
    his praise will always be on my lips.
I will glory(GU) in the Lord;
    let the afflicted hear and rejoice.(GV)
Glorify the Lord(GW) with me;
    let us exalt(GX) his name together.

I sought the Lord,(GY) and he answered me;
    he delivered(GZ) me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant;(HA)
    their faces are never covered with shame.(HB)
This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
    he saved him out of all his troubles.(HC)
The angel of the Lord(HD) encamps around those who fear him,
    and he delivers(HE) them.

Taste and see that the Lord is good;(HF)
    blessed is the one who takes refuge(HG) in him.
Fear the Lord,(HH) you his holy people,
    for those who fear him lack nothing.(HI)
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
    but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.(HJ)
11 Come, my children, listen(HK) to me;
    I will teach you(HL) the fear of the Lord.(HM)
12 Whoever of you loves life(HN)
    and desires to see many good days,
13 keep your tongue(HO) from evil
    and your lips from telling lies.(HP)
14 Turn from evil and do good;(HQ)
    seek peace(HR) and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord(HS) are on the righteous,(HT)
    and his ears are attentive(HU) to their cry;
16 but the face of the Lord is against(HV) those who do evil,(HW)
    to blot out their name(HX) from the earth.

17 The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears(HY) them;
    he delivers them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord is close(HZ) to the brokenhearted(IA)
    and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

19 The righteous person may have many troubles,(IB)
    but the Lord delivers him from them all;(IC)
20 he protects all his bones,
    not one of them will be broken.(ID)

21 Evil will slay the wicked;(IE)
    the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord will rescue(IF) his servants;
    no one who takes refuge(IG) in him will be condemned.

Psalm 35

Of David.

Contend,(IH) Lord, with those who contend with me;
    fight(II) against those who fight against me.
Take up shield(IJ) and armor;
    arise(IK) and come to my aid.(IL)
Brandish spear(IM) and javelin[n](IN)
    against those who pursue me.
Say to me,
    “I am your salvation.(IO)

May those who seek my life(IP)
    be disgraced(IQ) and put to shame;(IR)
may those who plot my ruin
    be turned back(IS) in dismay.
May they be like chaff(IT) before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord(IU) driving them away;
may their path be dark and slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

Since they hid their net(IV) for me without cause(IW)
    and without cause dug a pit(IX) for me,
may ruin overtake them by surprise—(IY)
    may the net they hid entangle them,
    may they fall into the pit,(IZ) to their ruin.
Then my soul will rejoice(JA) in the Lord
    and delight in his salvation.(JB)
10 My whole being will exclaim,
    “Who is like you,(JC) Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong(JD) for them,
    the poor and needy(JE) from those who rob them.”

11 Ruthless witnesses(JF) come forward;
    they question me on things I know nothing about.
12 They repay me evil for good(JG)
    and leave me like one bereaved.
13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth(JH)
    and humbled myself with fasting.(JI)
When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14     I went about mourning(JJ)
    as though for my friend or brother.
I bowed my head in grief
    as though weeping for my mother.
15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;(JK)
    assailants gathered against me without my knowledge.
    They slandered(JL) me without ceasing.
16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked;[o](JM)
    they gnashed their teeth(JN) at me.

17 How long,(JO) Lord, will you look on?
    Rescue me from their ravages,
    my precious life(JP) from these lions.(JQ)
18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly;(JR)
    among the throngs(JS) I will praise you.(JT)
19 Do not let those gloat over me
    who are my enemies(JU) without cause;
do not let those who hate me without reason(JV)
    maliciously wink the eye.(JW)
20 They do not speak peaceably,
    but devise false accusations(JX)
    against those who live quietly in the land.
21 They sneer(JY) at me and say, “Aha! Aha!(JZ)
    With our own eyes we have seen it.”

22 Lord, you have seen(KA) this; do not be silent.
    Do not be far(KB) from me, Lord.
23 Awake,(KC) and rise(KD) to my defense!
    Contend(KE) for me, my God and Lord.
24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
    do not let them gloat(KF) over me.
25 Do not let them think, “Aha,(KG) just what we wanted!”
    or say, “We have swallowed him up.”(KH)

26 May all who gloat(KI) over my distress(KJ)
    be put to shame(KK) and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me(KL)
    be clothed with shame and disgrace.
27 May those who delight in my vindication(KM)
    shout for joy(KN) and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
    who delights(KO) in the well-being of his servant.”(KP)

28 My tongue will proclaim your righteousness,(KQ)
    your praises all day long.(KR)

Psalm 36[p]

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord.

I have a message from God in my heart
    concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:[q](KS)
There is no fear(KT) of God
    before their eyes.(KU)

In their own eyes they flatter themselves
    too much to detect or hate their sin.(KV)
The words of their mouths(KW) are wicked and deceitful;(KX)
    they fail to act wisely(KY) or do good.(KZ)
Even on their beds they plot evil;(LA)
    they commit themselves to a sinful course(LB)
    and do not reject what is wrong.(LC)

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness(LD) to the skies.(LE)
Your righteousness(LF) is like the highest mountains,(LG)
    your justice like the great deep.(LH)
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.(LI)
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!(LJ)
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.(LK)
They feast on the abundance of your house;(LL)
    you give them drink from your river(LM) of delights.(LN)
For with you is the fountain of life;(LO)
    in your light(LP) we see light.

10 Continue your love(LQ) to those who know you,(LR)
    your righteousness to the upright in heart.(LS)
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
    nor the hand of the wicked(LT) drive me away.
12 See how the evildoers lie fallen—
    thrown down, not able to rise!(LU)
