³ Do not drag me away with the wicked,
    with those who do evil,
who speak cordially with their neighbors
    but harbor malice in their hearts.^(G)
4 Repay them for their deeds
    and for their evil work;
repay them for what their hands have done^(H)
    and bring back on them what they deserve.^(I)

⁵ Because they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord
    and what his hands have done,^(J)
he will tear them down
    and never build them up again.

⁶ Praise be to the Lord,^(K)
    for he has heard my cry for mercy.^(L)
7 The Lord is my strength^(M) and my shield;
    my heart trusts^(N) in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy,^(O)
    and with my song I praise him.^(P)

⁸ The Lord is the strength^(Q) of his people,
    a fortress of salvation^(R) for his anointed one.^(S)
9 Save your people^(T) and bless your inheritance;^(U)
    be their shepherd^(V) and carry them^(W) forever.

³ The voice^(AB) of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory^(AC) thunders,^(AD)
    the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.^(AE)
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;^(AF)
    the voice of the Lord is majestic.
⁵ The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.^(AG)
6 He makes Lebanon leap^(AH) like a calf,
    Sirion^[b](AI) like a young wild ox.^(AJ)
7 The voice of the Lord strikes
    with flashes of lightning.^(AK)
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
    the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.^(AL)
9 The voice of the Lord twists the oaks^[c](AM)
    and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”^(AN)

¹⁰ The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;^(AO)
    the Lord is enthroned as King forever.^(AP)
11 The Lord gives strength to his people;^(AQ)
    the Lord blesses his people with peace.^(AR)

⁴ Sing^(AZ) the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;^(BA)
    praise his holy name.^(BB)
5 For his anger^(BC) lasts only a moment,^(BD)
    but his favor lasts a lifetime;^(BE)
weeping^(BF) may stay for the night,
    but rejoicing comes in the morning.^(BG)

⁶ When I felt secure, I said,
    “I will never be shaken.”^(BH)
7 Lord, when you favored me,
    you made my royal mountain^[f] stand firm;
but when you hid your face,^(BI)
    I was dismayed.

⁸ To you, Lord, I called;
    to the Lord I cried for mercy:
⁹ “What is gained if I am silenced,
    if I go down to the pit?^(BJ)
Will the dust praise you?
    Will it proclaim your faithfulness?^(BK)
10 Hear,^(BL) Lord, and be merciful to me;^(BM)
    Lord, be my help.^(BN)”

¹¹ You turned my wailing^(BO) into dancing;^(BP)
    you removed my sackcloth^(BQ) and clothed me with joy,^(BR)
12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
    Lord my God, I will praise^(BS) you forever.^(BT)

⁶ I hate those who cling to worthless idols;^(CG)
    as for me, I trust in the Lord.^(CH)
7 I will be glad and rejoice in your love,
    for you saw my affliction^(CI)
    and knew the anguish^(CJ) of my soul.
⁸ You have not given me into the hands^(CK) of the enemy
    but have set my feet in a spacious place.^(CL)

⁹ Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress;^(CM)
    my eyes grow weak with sorrow,^(CN)
    my soul and body^(CO) with grief.
¹⁰ My life is consumed by anguish^(CP)
    and my years by groaning;^(CQ)
my strength fails^(CR) because of my affliction,^[h](CS)
    and my bones grow weak.^(CT)
11 Because of all my enemies,^(CU)
    I am the utter contempt^(CV) of my neighbors^(CW)
and an object of dread to my closest friends—
    those who see me on the street flee from me.
¹² I am forgotten as though I were dead;^(CX)
    I have become like broken pottery.
¹³ For I hear many whispering,^(CY)
    “Terror on every side!”^(CZ)
They conspire against me^(DA)
    and plot to take my life.^(DB)

¹⁴ But I trust^(DC) in you, Lord;
    I say, “You are my God.”
¹⁵ My times^(DD) are in your hands;
    deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
    from those who pursue me.
¹⁶ Let your face shine^(DE) on your servant;
    save me in your unfailing love.^(DF)
17 Let me not be put to shame,^(DG) Lord,
    for I have cried out to you;
but let the wicked be put to shame
    and be silent^(DH) in the realm of the dead.
¹⁸ Let their lying lips^(DI) be silenced,
    for with pride and contempt
    they speak arrogantly^(DJ) against the righteous.

¹⁹ How abundant are the good things^(DK)
    that you have stored up for those who fear you,
that you bestow in the sight of all,^(DL)
    on those who take refuge^(DM) in you.
²⁰ In the shelter^(DN) of your presence you hide^(DO) them
    from all human intrigues;^(DP)
you keep them safe in your dwelling
    from accusing tongues.

²¹ Praise be to the Lord,^(DQ)
    for he showed me the wonders of his love^(DR)
    when I was in a city under siege.^(DS)
22 In my alarm^(DT) I said,
    “I am cut off^(DU) from your sight!”
Yet you heard my cry^(DV) for mercy
    when I called to you for help.

²³ Love the Lord, all his faithful people!^(DW)
    The Lord preserves those who are true to him,^(DX)
    but the proud he pays back^(DY) in full.
²⁴ Be strong and take heart,^(DZ)
    all you who hope in the Lord.

³ When I kept silent,^(ED)
    my bones wasted away^(EE)
    through my groaning^(EF) all day long.
⁴ For day and night
    your hand was heavy^(EG) on me;
my strength was sapped^(EH)
    as in the heat of summer.^[j]

⁵ Then I acknowledged my sin to you
    and did not cover up my iniquity.^(EI)
I said, “I will confess^(EJ)
    my transgressions^(EK) to the Lord.”
And you forgave
    the guilt of my sin.^(EL)

⁶ Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
    while you may be found;^(EM)
surely the rising^(EN) of the mighty waters^(EO)
    will not reach them.^(EP)
7 You are my hiding place;^(EQ)
    you will protect me from trouble^(ER)
    and surround me with songs of deliverance.^(ES)

⁸ I will instruct^(ET) you and teach you^(EU) in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my loving eye on^(EV) you.
⁹ Do not be like the horse or the mule,
    which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle^(EW)
    or they will not come to you.
¹⁰ Many are the woes of the wicked,^(EX)
    but the Lord’s unfailing love
    surrounds the one who trusts^(EY) in him.

¹¹ Rejoice in the Lord^(EZ) and be glad, you righteous;
    sing, all you who are upright in heart!

⁴ For the word of the Lord is right^(FH) and true;^(FI)
    he is faithful^(FJ) in all he does.
⁵ The Lord loves righteousness and justice;^(FK)
    the earth is full of his unfailing love.^(FL)

⁶ By the word^(FM) of the Lord the heavens were made,^(FN)
    their starry host^(FO) by the breath of his mouth.
⁷ He gathers the waters^(FP) of the sea into jars^[k];^(FQ)
    he puts the deep into storehouses.
⁸ Let all the earth fear the Lord;^(FR)
    let all the people of the world^(FS) revere him.^(FT)
9 For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded,^(FU) and it stood firm.

¹⁰ The Lord foils^(FV) the plans^(FW) of the nations;^(FX)
    he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
¹¹ But the plans of the Lord stand firm^(FY) forever,
    the purposes^(FZ) of his heart through all generations.

¹² Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,^(GA)
    the people he chose^(GB) for his inheritance.^(GC)
13 From heaven the Lord looks down^(GD)
    and sees all mankind;^(GE)
14 from his dwelling place^(GF) he watches
    all who live on earth—
¹⁵ he who forms^(GG) the hearts of all,
    who considers everything they do.^(GH)

¹⁶ No king is saved by the size of his army;^(GI)
    no warrior escapes by his great strength.
¹⁷ A horse^(GJ) is a vain hope for deliverance;
    despite all its great strength it cannot save.
¹⁸ But the eyes^(GK) of the Lord are on those who fear him,
    on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,^(GL)
19 to deliver them from death^(GM)
    and keep them alive in famine.^(GN)

²⁰ We wait^(GO) in hope for the Lord;
    he is our help and our shield.
²¹ In him our hearts rejoice,^(GP)
    for we trust in his holy name.^(GQ)
22 May your unfailing love^(GR) be with us, Lord,
    even as we put our hope in you.

⁴ I sought the Lord,^(GY) and he answered me;
    he delivered^(GZ) me from all my fears.
⁵ Those who look to him are radiant;^(HA)
    their faces are never covered with shame.^(HB)
6 This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
    he saved him out of all his troubles.^(HC)
7 The angel of the Lord^(HD) encamps around those who fear him,
    and he delivers^(HE) them.

⁸ Taste and see that the Lord is good;^(HF)
    blessed is the one who takes refuge^(HG) in him.
⁹ Fear the Lord,^(HH) you his holy people,
    for those who fear him lack nothing.^(HI)
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
    but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.^(HJ)
11 Come, my children, listen^(HK) to me;
    I will teach you^(HL) the fear of the Lord.^(HM)
12 Whoever of you loves life^(HN)
    and desires to see many good days,
¹³ keep your tongue^(HO) from evil
    and your lips from telling lies.^(HP)
14 Turn from evil and do good;^(HQ)
    seek peace^(HR) and pursue it.

¹⁵ The eyes of the Lord^(HS) are on the righteous,^(HT)
    and his ears are attentive^(HU) to their cry;
¹⁶ but the face of the Lord is against^(HV) those who do evil,^(HW)
    to blot out their name^(HX) from the earth.

¹⁷ The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears^(HY) them;
    he delivers them from all their troubles.
¹⁸ The Lord is close^(HZ) to the brokenhearted^(IA)
    and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

¹⁹ The righteous person may have many troubles,^(IB)
    but the Lord delivers him from them all;^(IC)
20 he protects all his bones,
    not one of them will be broken.^(ID)

²¹ Evil will slay the wicked;^(IE)
    the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
²² The Lord will rescue^(IF) his servants;
    no one who takes refuge^(IG) in him will be condemned.

⁴ May those who seek my life^(IP)
    be disgraced^(IQ) and put to shame;^(IR)
may those who plot my ruin
    be turned back^(IS) in dismay.
⁵ May they be like chaff^(IT) before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord^(IU) driving them away;
⁶ may their path be dark and slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

⁷ Since they hid their net^(IV) for me without cause^(IW)
    and without cause dug a pit^(IX) for me,
⁸ may ruin overtake them by surprise—^(IY)
    may the net they hid entangle them,
    may they fall into the pit,^(IZ) to their ruin.
⁹ Then my soul will rejoice^(JA) in the Lord
    and delight in his salvation.^(JB)
10 My whole being will exclaim,
    “Who is like you,^(JC) Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong^(JD) for them,
    the poor and needy^(JE) from those who rob them.”

¹¹ Ruthless witnesses^(JF) come forward;
    they question me on things I know nothing about.
¹² They repay me evil for good^(JG)
    and leave me like one bereaved.
¹³ Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth^(JH)
    and humbled myself with fasting.^(JI)
When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
¹⁴     I went about mourning^(JJ)
    as though for my friend or brother.
I bowed my head in grief
    as though weeping for my mother.
¹⁵ But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;^(JK)
    assailants gathered against me without my knowledge.
    They slandered^(JL) me without ceasing.
¹⁶ Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked;^[o](JM)
    they gnashed their teeth^(JN) at me.

¹⁷ How long,^(JO) Lord, will you look on?
    Rescue me from their ravages,
    my precious life^(JP) from these lions.^(JQ)
18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly;^(JR)
    among the throngs^(JS) I will praise you.^(JT)
19 Do not let those gloat over me
    who are my enemies^(JU) without cause;
do not let those who hate me without reason^(JV)
    maliciously wink the eye.^(JW)
20 They do not speak peaceably,
    but devise false accusations^(JX)
    against those who live quietly in the land.
²¹ They sneer^(JY) at me and say, “Aha! Aha!^(JZ)
    With our own eyes we have seen it.”

²² Lord, you have seen^(KA) this; do not be silent.
    Do not be far^(KB) from me, Lord.
²³ Awake,^(KC) and rise^(KD) to my defense!
    Contend^(KE) for me, my God and Lord.
²⁴ Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
    do not let them gloat^(KF) over me.
²⁵ Do not let them think, “Aha,^(KG) just what we wanted!”
    or say, “We have swallowed him up.”^(KH)

²⁶ May all who gloat^(KI) over my distress^(KJ)
    be put to shame^(KK) and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me^(KL)
    be clothed with shame and disgrace.
²⁷ May those who delight in my vindication^(KM)
    shout for joy^(KN) and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
    who delights^(KO) in the well-being of his servant.”^(KP)

²⁸ My tongue will proclaim your righteousness,^(KQ)
    your praises all day long.^(KR)

² In their own eyes they flatter themselves
    too much to detect or hate their sin.^(KV)
3 The words of their mouths^(KW) are wicked and deceitful;^(KX)
    they fail to act wisely^(KY) or do good.^(KZ)
4 Even on their beds they plot evil;^(LA)
    they commit themselves to a sinful course^(LB)
    and do not reject what is wrong.^(LC)

⁵ Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness^(LD) to the skies.^(LE)
6 Your righteousness^(LF) is like the highest mountains,^(LG)
    your justice like the great deep.^(LH)
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.^(LI)
7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!^(LJ)
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.^(LK)
8 They feast on the abundance of your house;^(LL)
    you give them drink from your river^(LM) of delights.^(LN)
9 For with you is the fountain of life;^(LO)
    in your light^(LP) we see light.

¹⁰ Continue your love^(LQ) to those who know you,^(LR)
    your righteousness to the upright in heart.^(LS)
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
    nor the hand of the wicked^(LT) drive me away.
¹² See how the evildoers lie fallen—
    thrown down, not able to rise!^(LU)
