Assurance of God’s Victory over Enemies(A)

A Song. A Psalm of David.

108 O (B)God, my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.
(C)Awake, lute and harp!
I will awaken the dawn.
I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples,
And I will sing praises to You among the nations.
For Your mercy is great above the [a]heavens,
And Your truth reaches to the clouds.

(D)Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,
And Your glory above all the earth;
(E)That Your beloved may be delivered,
Save with Your right hand, and [b]hear me.

God has spoken in His holiness:
“I will rejoice;
I will divide Shechem
And measure out the Valley of Succoth.
Gilead is Mine; Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the [c]helmet for My head;
(F)Judah is My lawgiver.
Moab is My washpot;
Over Edom I will cast My shoe;
Over Philistia I will triumph.”

10 (G)Who will bring me into the strong city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Is it not You, O God, who cast us off?
And You, O God, who did not go out with our armies?
12 Give us help from trouble,
For the help of man is useless.
13 (H)Through God we will do valiantly,
For it is He who shall tread down our enemies.

Plea for Judgment of False Accusers

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

109 Do(I) not keep silent,
O God of my praise!
For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful
Have opened against me;
They have spoken against me with a (J)lying tongue.
They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And fought against me (K)without a cause.
In return for my love they are my accusers,
But I give myself to prayer.
Thus (L)they have rewarded me evil for good,
And hatred for my love.

Set a wicked man over him,
And let (M)an [d]accuser stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, let him be found guilty,
And (N)let his prayer become sin.
Let his days be (O)few,
And (P)let another take his office.
(Q)Let his children be fatherless,
And his wife a widow.
10 Let his children [e]continually be vagabonds, and beg;
Let them [f]seek their bread also from their desolate places.
11 (R)Let the creditor seize all that he has,
And let strangers plunder his labor.
12 Let there be none to extend mercy to him,
Nor let there be any to favor his fatherless children.
13 (S)Let his [g]posterity be cut off,
And in the generation following let their (T)name be blotted out.

14 (U)Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord,
And let not the sin of his mother (V)be blotted out.
15 Let them be continually before the Lord,
That He may (W)cut off the memory of them from the earth;
16 Because he did not remember to show mercy,
But persecuted the poor and needy man,
That he might even slay the (X)broken in heart.
17 (Y)As he loved cursing, so let it come to him;
As he did not delight in blessing, so let it be far from him.
18 As he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment,
So let it (Z)enter his body like water,
And like oil into his bones.
19 Let it be to him like the garment which covers him,
And for a belt with which he girds himself continually.
20 Let this be the Lord’s reward to my accusers,
And to those who speak evil against my person.

21 But You, O God the Lord,
Deal with me for Your name’s sake;
Because Your mercy is good, deliver me.
22 For I am poor and needy,
And my heart is wounded within me.
23 I am gone (AA)like a shadow when it lengthens;
I am shaken off like a locust.
24 My (AB)knees are weak through fasting,
And my flesh is feeble from lack of fatness.
25 I also have become (AC)a reproach to them;
When they look at me, (AD)they shake their heads.

26 Help me, O Lord my God!
Oh, save me according to Your mercy,
27 (AE)That they may know that this is Your hand—
That You, Lord, have done it!
28 (AF)Let them curse, but You bless;
When they arise, let them be ashamed,
But let (AG)Your servant rejoice.
29 (AH)Let my accusers be clothed with shame,
And let them cover themselves with their own disgrace as with a mantle.

30 I will greatly praise the Lord with my mouth;
Yes, (AI)I will praise Him among the multitude.
31 For (AJ)He shall stand at the right hand of the poor,
To save him from those [h]who condemn him.

Announcement of the Messiah’s Reign(AK)

A Psalm of David.

110 The (AL)Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your (AM)footstool.”
The Lord shall send the rod of Your strength (AN)out of Zion.
(AO)Rule in the midst of Your enemies!

(AP)Your people shall be volunteers
In the day of Your power;
(AQ)In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning,
You have the dew of Your youth.
The Lord has sworn
And (AR)will not relent,
“You are a (AS)priest forever
According to the order of (AT)Melchizedek.”

The Lord is (AU)at Your right hand;
He shall [i]execute kings (AV)in the day of His wrath.
He shall judge among the nations,
He shall fill the places with dead bodies,
(AW)He shall [j]execute the heads of many countries.
He shall drink of the brook by the wayside;
(AX)Therefore He shall lift up the head.

Praise to God for His Faithfulness and Justice

111 Praise[k] the Lord!

(AY)I will praise the Lord with my whole heart,
In the assembly of the upright and in the congregation.

(AZ)The works of the Lord are great,
(BA)Studied by all who have pleasure in them.
His work is (BB)honorable and glorious,
And His righteousness endures forever.
He has made His wonderful works to be remembered;
(BC)The Lord is gracious and full of compassion.
He has given food to those who fear Him;
He will ever be mindful of His covenant.
He has declared to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the [l]heritage of the nations.

The works of His hands are (BD)verity[m] and justice;
All His precepts are sure.
(BE)They stand fast forever and ever,
And are (BF)done in truth and uprightness.
(BG)He has sent redemption to His people;
He has commanded His covenant forever:
(BH)Holy and awesome is His name.

10 (BI)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.
His praise endures forever.

The Blessed State of the Righteous

112 Praise[n] the Lord!

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
Who (BJ)delights greatly in His commandments.

(BK)His descendants will be mighty on earth;
The generation of the upright will be blessed.
(BL)Wealth and riches will be in his house,
And his righteousness [o]endures forever.
(BM)Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness;
He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
(BN)A good man deals graciously and lends;
He will guide his affairs (BO)with discretion.
Surely he will never be shaken;
(BP)The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance.
(BQ)He will not be afraid of evil tidings;
His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
His (BR)heart is established;
(BS)He will not be afraid,
Until he (BT)sees his desire upon his enemies.

He has dispersed abroad,
He has given to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever;
His [p]horn will be exalted with honor.
10 The wicked will see it and be grieved;
He will gnash his teeth and melt away;
The desire of the wicked shall perish.

The Majesty and Condescension of God

113 Praise[q] the Lord!

(BU)Praise, O servants of the Lord,
Praise the name of the Lord!
(BV)Blessed be the name of the Lord
From this time forth and forevermore!
(BW)From the rising of the sun to its going down
The Lord’s name is to be praised.

The Lord is (BX)high above all nations,
(BY)His glory above the heavens.
(BZ)Who is like the Lord our God,
Who dwells on high,
(CA)Who humbles Himself to behold
The things that are in the heavens and in the earth?

(CB)He raises the poor out of the dust,
And lifts the (CC)needy out of the ash heap,
That He may (CD)seat him with princes—
With the princes of His people.
(CE)He grants the [r]barren woman a home,
Like a joyful mother of children.

Praise the Lord!

The Power of God in His Deliverance of Israel(CF)

114 When (CG)Israel went out of Egypt,
The house of Jacob (CH)from a people [s]of strange language,
(CI)Judah became His sanctuary,
And Israel His dominion.

(CJ)The sea saw it and fled;
(CK)Jordan turned back.
(CL)The mountains skipped like rams,
The little hills like lambs.
(CM)What ails you, O sea, that you fled?
O Jordan, that you turned back?
O mountains, that you skipped like rams?
O little hills, like lambs?

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the God of Jacob,
(CN)Who turned the rock into a pool of water,
The flint into a fountain of waters.

The Futility of Idols and the Trustworthiness of God

115 Not (CO)unto us, O Lord, not unto us,
But to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy,
Because of Your truth.
Why should the [t]Gentiles say,
(CP)“So where is their God?”

(CQ)But our God is in heaven;
He does whatever He pleases.
(CR)Their idols are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
They have ears, but they do not hear;
Noses they have, but they do not smell;
They have hands, but they do not handle;
Feet they have, but they do not walk;
Nor do they mutter through their throat.
(CS)Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them.

(CT)O Israel, trust in the Lord;
(CU)He is their help and their shield.
10 O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
11 You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.

12 The Lord [u]has been mindful of us;
He will bless us;
He will bless the house of Israel;
He will bless the house of Aaron.
13 (CV)He will bless those who fear the Lord,
Both small and great.

14 May the Lord give you increase more and more,
You and your children.
15 May you be (CW)blessed by the Lord,
(CX)Who made heaven and earth.

16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s;
But the earth He has given to the children of men.
17 (CY)The dead do not praise the Lord,
Nor any who go down into silence.
18 (CZ)But we will bless the Lord
From this time forth and forevermore.

Praise the Lord!

Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Death

116 I (DA)love the Lord, because He has heard
My voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.

(DB)The [v]pains of death surrounded me,
And the [w]pangs of Sheol [x]laid hold of me;
I found trouble and sorrow.
Then I called upon the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I implore You, deliver my soul!”

(DC)Gracious is the Lord, and (DD)righteous;
Yes, our God is merciful.
The Lord preserves the simple;
I was brought low, and He saved me.
Return to your (DE)rest, O my soul,
For (DF)the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

(DG)For You have delivered my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from falling.
I will walk before the Lord
(DH)In the land of the living.
10 (DI)I believed, therefore I spoke,
“I am greatly afflicted.”
11 (DJ)I said in my haste,
(DK)“All men are liars.”

12 What shall I render to the Lord
For all His benefits toward me?
13 I will take up the cup of salvation,
And call upon the name of the Lord.
14 (DL)I will pay my vows to the Lord
Now in the presence of all His people.

15 (DM)Precious in the sight of the Lord
Is the death of His saints.

16 O Lord, truly (DN)I am Your servant;
I am Your servant, (DO)the son of Your maidservant;
You have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer to You (DP)the sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And will call upon the name of the Lord.

18 I will pay my vows to the Lord
Now in the presence of all His people,
19 In the (DQ)courts of the Lord’s house,
In the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

[y]Praise the Lord!

Let All Peoples Praise the Lord

117 Praise (DR)the Lord, all you Gentiles!
[z]Laud Him, all you peoples!
For His merciful kindness is great toward us,
And (DS)the truth of the Lord endures forever.

Praise the Lord!

Praise to God for His Everlasting Mercy

118 Oh, (DT)give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
(DU)For His mercy endures forever.

(DV)Let Israel now say,
“His mercy endures forever.”
Let the house of Aaron now say,
“His mercy endures forever.”
Let those who fear the Lord now say,
“His mercy endures forever.”

(DW)I called on the Lord in distress;
The Lord answered me and (DX)set me in a broad place.
(DY)The Lord is on my side;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
(DZ)The Lord is for me among those who help me;
Therefore (EA)I shall see my desire on those who hate me.
(EB)It is better to trust in the Lord
Than to put confidence in man.
(EC)It is better to trust in the Lord
Than to put confidence in princes.

10 All nations surrounded me,
But in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.
11 They (ED)surrounded me,
Yes, they surrounded me;
But in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.
12 They surrounded me (EE)like bees;
They were quenched (EF)like a fire of thorns;
For in the name of the Lord I will [aa]destroy them.
13 You pushed me violently, that I might fall,
But the Lord helped me.
14 (EG)The Lord is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation.

15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation
Is in the tents of the righteous;
The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
16 (EH)The right hand of the Lord is exalted;
The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
17 (EI)I shall not die, but live,
And (EJ)declare the works of the Lord.
18 The Lord has (EK)chastened[ab] me severely,
But He has not given me over to death.

19 (EL)Open to me the gates of righteousness;
I will go through them,
And I will praise the Lord.
20 (EM)This is the gate of the Lord,
(EN)Through which the righteous shall enter.

21 I will praise You,
For You have (EO)answered me,
And have become my salvation.

22 (EP)The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.
23 [ac]This was the Lord’s doing;
It is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Save now, I pray, O Lord;
O Lord, I pray, send now prosperity.
26 (EQ)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
We have blessed you from the house of the Lord.
27 God is the Lord,
And He has given us (ER)light;
Bind the sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.
28 You are my God, and I will praise You;
(ES)You are my God, I will exalt You.

29 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.

For great is your love,(F) higher than the heavens;
    your faithfulness(G) reaches to the skies.(H)
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;(I)
    let your glory be over all the earth.(J)

Save us and help us with your right hand,(K)
    that those you love may be delivered.

Moab(Q) is my washbasin,

With words of hatred(AA) they surround me;
    they attack me without cause.(AB)
In return for my friendship they accuse me,
    but I am a man of prayer.(AC)
They repay me evil for good,(AD)
    and hatred for my friendship.

Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy;

When he is tried, let him be found guilty,(AF)

May his days be few;(AH)
    may another take his place(AI) of leadership.
May his children be fatherless
    and his wife a widow.(AJ)
10 May his children be wandering beggars;(AK)
