Hosea’s Wife and Children

1 The word of the Lord which came to ^(A)Hosea the son of Beeri, during the days of ^(B)Uzziah, ^(C)Jotham, ^(D)Ahaz, and ^(E)Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the days of ^(F)Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

Destruction in Israel and Judah

1 The ^(A)word of the Lord which came to ^(B)Micah of Moresheth in the days of ^(C)Jotham, ^(D)Ahaz, and ^(E)Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and which he saw regarding Samaria and Jerusalem.

Azariah (Uzziah) Succeeds Amaziah in Judah

^17 (A)Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. ¹⁸ Now as for the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? ¹⁹ They formed a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to ^(B)Lachish; but they sent men to Lachish after him and they killed him there. ²⁰ Then they carried him on horses, and he was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David. ²¹ And all the people of Judah took ^[a]Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. ^22 (C)He built Elath and restored it to Judah after the king ^[b]lay down with his fathers.

²³ In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel became king in Samaria, and reigned for forty-one years. ²⁴ He did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not abandon all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, into which he misled Israel. ^25 (D)He restored the border of Israel from ^(E)the entrance of Hamath as far as ^(F)the Sea of the Arabah, in accordance with the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which He spoke ^[c]through His servant ^(G)Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was from ^(H)Gath-hepher. ²⁶ For the ^(I)Lord saw the misery of Israel, which was very bitter; for ^(J)there was neither ^[d]bond nor free spared, nor was there any helper for Israel. ²⁷ Yet the ^(K)Lord did not say that He would wipe out the name of Israel from under heaven, but He saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.

Zechariah Reigns over Israel

²⁸ Now as for the rest of the acts of Jeroboam and all that he did and his might, how he fought and how he recovered for Israel ^(L)Damascus and ^(M)Hamath, which had belonged to Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? ²⁹ And Jeroboam ^[e]lay down with his fathers, with the kings of Israel, and his son Zechariah became king in his place.

Series of Kings: Azariah (Uzziah) over Judah

15 ^(N)In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah son of Amaziah king of Judah became king. ² He was ^(O)sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned for fifty-two years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was ^[f]Jecoliah of Jerusalem. ³ He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, in accordance with everything that his father Amaziah had done. ⁴ Only ^(P)the high places were not eliminated; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. ^5 (Q)And the Lord afflicted the king, so that he had leprosy to the day of his death. And he ^(R)lived in a separate house, ^[g]while Jotham the king’s son was in charge of the household, judging the people of the land. ⁶ Now as for the rest of the acts of Azariah and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? ⁷ And Azariah ^[h]lay down with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David, and his son Jotham became king in his place.

Zechariah over Israel

^8 (S)In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam became king over Israel in Samaria for six months. ⁹ He did evil in the sight of the Lord, just as his fathers had done; he did not desist from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, into which he misled Israel. ¹⁰ Then Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and ^(T)struck him in the presence of the people and ^[i]killed him, and reigned in his place. ¹¹ Now as for the rest of the acts of Zechariah, behold they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel. ¹² This is ^(U)the word of the Lord which He spoke to Jehu, saying, “Your sons to the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” And so it was.

¹³ Shallum the son of Jabesh became king in the ^(V)thirty-ninth year of Uzziah king of Judah, and he reigned for ^[j]one month in ^(W)Samaria. ¹⁴ Then Menahem the son of Gadi went up from ^(X)Tirzah and came to Samaria, and struck Shallum son of Jabesh in Samaria, and killed him and became king in his place. ¹⁵ Now as for the rest of the acts of Shallum and his conspiracy which he formed, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel. ¹⁶ Then Menahem attacked Tiphsah and all who were in it and its borders from Tirzah, because they did not open up to him; so he attacked it and ripped up ^(Y)all its women who were pregnant.

Menahem over Israel

¹⁷ In the ^(Z)thirty-ninth year of Azariah king of Judah, Menahem the son of Gadi became king over Israel and reigned for ten years in Samaria. ¹⁸ He did evil in the sight of the Lord; for all his days he did not desist from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, into which he misled Israel.

^19 (AA)Pul, the king of Assyria, came against the land, and Menahem gave Pul a ^[k]thousand talents of silver so that his hand might be with him to ^(AB)strengthen the ^[l]kingdom ^[m]under his rule. ²⁰ Then Menahem collected the money from Israel, from all the ^[n]mighty men of wealth, from each man fifty shekels of silver to pay the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria returned and did not stay there in the land. ²¹ Now as for the rest of the acts of Menahem and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? ²² And Menahem ^[o]lay down with his fathers, and his son Pekahiah became king in his place.

Pekahiah over Israel

²³ In ^(AC)the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah the son of Menahem became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned for two years. ²⁴ He did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not desist from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, into which he misled Israel. ²⁵ Then Pekah the son of Remaliah, his officer, conspired against him and struck him in Samaria, in ^(AD)the castle of the king’s house with Argob and Arieh; and with him were fifty men of the Gileadites, and he killed him and became king in his place. ²⁶ Now as for the rest of the acts of Pekahiah and everything that he did, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

Pekah over Israel

²⁷ In ^(AE)the fifty-second year of Azariah king of Judah, ^(AF)Pekah the son of Remaliah became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned for twenty years. ²⁸ He did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not desist from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, into which he misled Israel.

²⁹ In the days of Pekah king of Israel, ^[p](AG)Tiglath-pileser the king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali; and ^(AH)he led ^[q]their populations into exile to Assyria. ³⁰ And Hoshea the son of Elah formed a conspiracy against Pekah the son of Remaliah, and struck him and put him to death, and he became king in his place, in the twentieth year of Jotham the son of Uzziah. ³¹ Now as for the rest of the acts of Pekah and all that he did, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

Jotham over Judah

³² In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah king of Israel, Jotham the son of ^[r]Uzziah king of Judah became king. ^33 (AI)He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Jerusha the daughter of Zadok. ^34 (AJ)He did what was right in the sight of the Lord; he acted in accordance with everything that his father Uzziah had done. ³⁵ Only ^(AK)the high places were not eliminated; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. ^(AL)He built the upper gate of the house of the Lord. ³⁶ Now as for the rest of the acts of Jotham which he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? ³⁷ In those days ^(AM)the Lord began to send Rezin the king of Aram and Pekah the son of Remaliah against Judah. ³⁸ And Jotham ^[s]lay down with his fathers, and he was buried with his fathers in the city of his father David; and his son Ahaz became king in his place.

Uzziah Succeeds Amaziah in Judah

26 Now all the people of Judah took ^[a]Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. ² He built Eloth and restored it to Judah after the king ^[b]lay down with his fathers. ³ Uzziah was ^(A)sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned for fifty-two years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was ^[c]Jechiliah of Jerusalem. ⁴ He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, in accordance with everything that his father Amaziah had done. ^5 (B)He continued to seek God in the days of Zechariah, ^(C)who had understanding ^[d]through the vision of God; and ^[e](D)as long as he sought the Lord, God made him successful.

Uzziah Succeeds in War

⁶ Now he went out and ^(E)fought against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath, the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities in the area of Ashdod and among the Philistines. ^7 (F)God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians who lived in Gur-baal, and the Meunites. ⁸ The Ammonites gave ^(G)tribute to Uzziah, and his ^[f]fame extended to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong. ⁹ Moreover, Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at ^(H)the Corner Gate, the ^(I)Valley Gate, and at the corner buttress, and he fortified them. ¹⁰ He also built towers in the wilderness and ^(J)carved out many cisterns, for he had much livestock, both in the ^[g]lowland and in the plain. He also had plowmen and vinedressers in the hill country and the fertile fields, for he loved the soil. ¹¹ Moreover, Uzziah had an army ready for battle, which ^[h]entered combat by divisions according to the number of their muster, ^[i]recorded by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the official, under the direction of Hananiah, one of the king’s officers. ¹² The total number of the heads of the ^[j]households, of valiant warriors, was 2,600. ¹³ Under their direction was an army of ^(K)307,500, who could wage war with great power, to help the king against the enemy. ¹⁴ Moreover, Uzziah prepared ^[k]for all the army shields, spears, helmets, body armor, bows, and slingstones. ¹⁵ In Jerusalem he made machines of war invented by skillful workmen to be on the towers and the corners, for the purpose of shooting arrows and great stones. So his ^[l]fame spread far, for he was marvelously helped until he was strong.

Pride Is Uzziah’s Undoing

¹⁶ But ^(L)when he became strong, his heart was so ^[m]proud that he acted corruptly, and he was untrue to the Lord his God, for ^(M)he entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense. ¹⁷ Then ^(N)Azariah the priest entered after him, and with him eighty priests of the Lord, valiant men. ^18 (O)They opposed Uzziah the king and said to him, “^(P)It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord, ^(Q)but for the priests, the sons of Aaron who have been consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have been untrue and will have no honor from the Lord God.” ¹⁹ But Uzziah, with a censer in his hand for burning incense, was enraged; and while he was enraged with the priests, ^(R)leprosy broke out on his forehead in the presence of the priests in the house of the Lord, beside the altar of incense. ²⁰ Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and behold, he was leprous on his forehead; and they quickly removed him from there, and he himself also hurried to get out because the Lord had stricken him. ^21 (S)King Uzziah had leprosy to the day of his death; and he lived in ^(T)a separate house, afflicted as he was with leprosy, for he was cut off from the house of the Lord. And his son Jotham was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land.

²² Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, the first to the last, the prophet ^(U)Isaiah, the son of Amoz, has written. ²³ So Uzziah ^[n]lay down with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers ^(V)in the field of the grave which belonged to the kings, for they said, “He had leprosy.” And his son Jotham became king in his place.

Jotham Succeeds Uzziah in Judah

27 ^(W)Jotham was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jerushah the daughter of Zadok. ² He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father Uzziah had done; ^(X)however he did not enter the temple of the Lord. But the people continued acting corruptly.
