Psalm 69^[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David.

¹⁸ He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time^(A) is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’”

³⁸ Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow^(A) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”^(B)

³⁹ Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup^(C) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”^(D)

Gethsemane^(A)

³² They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” ³³ He took Peter, James and John^(B) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. ³⁴ “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”^(C) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

⁴² “Father, if you are willing, take this cup^(A) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”^{(B) 43} An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.^(C)

²³ Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works no one else did,^(A) they would not be guilty of sin.^(B) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. ²⁵ But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:^(C) ‘They hated me without reason.’^[a](D)

²³ When they hurled their insults at him,^(C) he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.^(D) Instead, he entrusted himself^(E) to him who judges justly.^(F)
