Israel to Reap the Whirlwind

¹¹ I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content^(A) whatever the circumstances. ¹² I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry,^(B) whether living in plenty or in want.^{(C) 13} I can do all this through him who gives me strength.^(D)

³ Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary^(A) and lose heart.

God Disciplines His Children

⁴ In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.^{(B) 5} And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

⁷ Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.^(F) For what children are not disciplined by their father? ⁸ If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline^(G)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.
