Psalm 38

Psalm 38^[a]

A psalm of David. A petition.

¹Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
    or discipline me in your wrath.^(A)
²Your arrows^(B) have pierced me,
    and your hand has come down on me.
³Because of your wrath there is no health^(C) in my body;
    there is no soundness in my bones^(D) because of my sin.
⁴My guilt has overwhelmed^(E) me
    like a burden too heavy to bear.^(F)

⁵My wounds^(G) fester and are loathsome^(H)
    because of my sinful folly.^(I)
⁶I am bowed down^(J) and brought very low;
    all day long I go about mourning.^(K)
⁷My back is filled with searing pain;^(L)
    there is no health^(M) in my body.
⁸I am feeble and utterly crushed;^(N)
    I groan^(O) in anguish of heart.^(P)

⁹All my longings^(Q) lie open before you, Lord;
    my sighing^(R) is not hidden from you.
¹⁰My heart pounds,^(S) my strength fails^(T) me;
    even the light has gone from my eyes.^(U)
¹¹My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;^(V)
    my neighbors stay far away.
¹²Those who want to kill me set their traps,^(W)
    those who would harm me talk of my ruin;^(X)
    all day long they scheme and lie.^(Y)

¹³I am like the deaf, who cannot hear,^(Z)
    like the mute, who cannot speak;
¹⁴I have become like one who does not hear,
    whose mouth can offer no reply.
¹⁵Lord, I wait^(AA) for you;
    you will answer,^(AB) Lord my God.
¹⁶For I said, “Do not let them gloat^(AC)
    or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.”^(AD)

¹⁷For I am about to fall,^(AE)
    and my pain^(AF) is ever with me.
¹⁸I confess my iniquity;^(AG)
    I am troubled by my sin.
¹⁹Many have become my enemies^(AH) without cause^[b];
    those who hate me^(AI) without reason^(AJ) are numerous.
²⁰Those who repay my good with evil^(AK)
    lodge accusations^(AL) against me,
    though I seek only to do what is good.

²¹Lord, do not forsake me;^(AM)
do not be far^(AN) from me, my God.
²²Come quickly^(AO) to help me,^(AP)
my Lord and my Savior.^(AQ)

Job 14

New International Version

14 “Mortals, born of woman,^(A)
    are of few days^(B) and full of trouble.^(C)
²They spring up like flowers^(D) and wither away;^(E)
    like fleeting shadows,^(F) they do not endure.^(G)
³Do you fix your eye on them?^(H)
    Will you bring them^[a] before you for judgment?^(I)
⁴Who can bring what is pure^(J) from the impure?^(K)
    No one!^(L)
⁵A person’s days are determined;^(M)
    you have decreed the number of his months^(N)
    and have set limits he cannot exceed.^(O)
⁶So look away from him and let him alone,^(P)
    till he has put in his time like a hired laborer.^(Q)

⁷“At least there is hope for a tree:^(R)
    If it is cut down, it will sprout again,
    and its new shoots^(S) will not fail.^(T)
⁸Its roots may grow old in the ground
    and its stump^(U) die in the soil,
⁹yet at the scent of water^(V) it will bud
    and put forth shoots like a plant.^(W)
¹⁰But a man dies and is laid low;^(X)
    he breathes his last and is no more.^(Y)
¹¹As the water of a lake dries up
    or a riverbed becomes parched and dry,^(Z)
¹²so he lies down and does not rise;^(AA)
    till the heavens are no more,^(AB) people will not awake
    or be roused from their sleep.^(AC)

¹³“If only you would hide me in the grave^(AD)
    and conceal me till your anger has passed!^(AE)
If only you would set me a time
    and then remember^(AF) me!^(AG)
¹⁴If someone dies, will they live again?
    All the days of my hard service^(AH)
    I will wait for my renewal^[b]^(AI) to come.
¹⁵You will call and I will answer you;^(AJ)
    you will long for the creature your hands have made.^(AK)
¹⁶Surely then you will count my steps^(AL)
    but not keep track of my sin.^(AM)
¹⁷My offenses will be sealed^(AN) up in a bag;^(AO)
    you will cover over my sin.^(AP)

¹⁸“But as a mountain erodes and crumbles^(AQ)
    and as a rock is moved from its place,^(AR)
¹⁹as water wears away stones
    and torrents^(AS) wash away the soil,^(AT)
    so you destroy a person’s hope.^(AU)
²⁰You overpower them once for all, and they are gone;^(AV)
    you change their countenance and send them away.^(AW)
²¹If their children are honored, they do not know it;
    if their offspring are brought low, they do not see it.^(AX)
²²They feel but the pain of their own bodies^(AY)
    and mourn only for themselves.^(AZ)”

¹⁸In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. ¹⁹After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed.^(A)

Herod’s Death

Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea^(B) and stayed there. ²⁰He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon;^(C) they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.^(D)

²¹On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. ²²They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” ²³Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel^(E) of the Lord struck him down,^(F) and he was eaten by worms and died.

²⁴But the word of God^(G) continued to spread and flourish.^(H)

Barnabas and Saul Sent Off

²⁵When Barnabas^(I) and Saul had finished their mission,^(J) they returned from^[a] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.^(K)

Jesus’ Claims About Himself

⁴⁸The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan^(B) and demon-possessed?”^(C)

⁴⁹“I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. ⁵⁰I am not seeking glory for myself;^(D) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. ⁵¹Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”^(E)

⁵²At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!^(F) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. ⁵³Are you greater than our father Abraham?^(G) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”

⁵⁴Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,^(H) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.^(I) ⁵⁵Though you do not know him,^(J) I know him.^(K) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.^(L) ⁵⁶Your father Abraham^(M) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it^(N) and was glad.”

⁵⁷“You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”

⁵⁸“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,^(O) I am!”^(P) ⁵⁹At this, they picked up stones to stone him,^(Q) but Jesus hid himself,^(R) slipping away from the temple grounds.
