(A)Honor the Lord with your possessions,
And with the firstfruits of all your increase;
10 (B)So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine.

“Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time has not come, the time that the Lord’s house should be built.” ’ ”

Then the word of the Lord (A)came by Haggai the prophet, saying, Is it (B)time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this [a]temple to lie in ruins?” Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: (C)“Consider your ways!

“You have (D)sown much, and bring in little;
You eat, but do not have enough;
You drink, but you are not filled with drink;
You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm;
And (E)he who earns wages,
Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”

Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Consider your ways! Go up to the (F)mountains and bring wood and build the [b]temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the Lord. (G)You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, (H)I blew it away. Why?” says the Lord of hosts. “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house. 10 Therefore (I)the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit. 11 For I (J)called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on (K)all the labor of your hands.”

Polluted Offerings

“A son (A)honors his father,
And a servant his master.
(B)If then I am the Father,
Where is My honor?
And if I am a Master,
Where is My reverence?
Says the Lord of hosts
To you priests who despise My name.
(C)Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’

“You offer (D)defiled food on My altar,
But say,
‘In what way have we defiled You?’
By saying,
(E)‘The table of the Lord is [a]contemptible.’
And (F)when you offer the blind as a sacrifice,
Is it not evil?
And when you offer the lame and sick,
Is it not evil?
Offer it then to your governor!
Would he be pleased with you?
Would he (G)accept[b] you favorably?”
Says the Lord of hosts.

“But now entreat God’s favor,
That He may be gracious to us.
(H)While this is being done by your hands,
Will He accept you favorably?”
Says the Lord of hosts.
10 “Who is there even among you who would shut the doors,
(I)So that you would not kindle fire on My altar in vain?
I have no pleasure in you,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
(J)“Nor will I accept an offering from your hands.
11 For (K)from the rising of the sun, even to its going down,
My name shall be great (L)among the Gentiles;
(M)In every place (N)incense shall be offered to My name,
And a pure offering;
(O)For My name shall be great among the nations,”
Says the Lord of hosts.

12 “But you profane it,
In that you say,
(P)‘The table of the [c]Lord is defiled;
And its fruit, its food, is contemptible.’
13 You also say,
‘Oh, what a (Q)weariness!’
And you sneer at it,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
“And you bring the stolen, the lame, and the sick;
Thus you bring an offering!
(R)Should I accept this from your hand?”
Says the Lord.
14 “But cursed be (S)the deceiver
Who has in his flock a male,
And takes a vow,
But sacrifices to the Lord (T)what is blemished—
For (U)I am a great King,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
“And My name is to be feared among the nations.

The Anointing at Bethany(A)

(B)And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly [a]oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred (C)denarii and given to the poor.” And they (D)criticized[b] her sharply.

But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. (E)For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; (F)but Me you do not have always. She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is (G)preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”
