The Charge to Timothy Renewed

¹⁸ Timothy, my son,^(A) I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you,^(B) so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,^{(C) 19} holding on to faith and a good conscience,^(D) which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.^{(E) 20} Among them are Hymenaeus^(F) and Alexander,^(G) whom I have handed over to Satan^(H) to be taught not to blaspheme.

Instructions on Worship

2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,^(I) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— ² for kings and all those in authority,^(J) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness^(K) and holiness. ³ This is good, and pleases^(L) God our Savior,^{(M) 4} who wants^(N) all people^(O) to be saved^(P) and to come to a knowledge of the truth.^{(Q) 5} For there is one God^(R) and one mediator^(S) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,^{(T) 6} who gave himself as a ransom^(U) for all people. This has now been witnessed to^(V) at the proper time.^{(W) 7} And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying^(X)—and a true and faithful teacher^(Y) of the Gentiles.^(Z)

⁸ Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands^(AA) without anger or disputing. ⁹ I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,^{(AB) 10} but with good deeds,^(AC) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

¹¹ A woman^[a] should learn in quietness and full submission.^{(AD) 12} I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;^[b] she must be quiet.^{(AE) 13} For Adam was formed first, then Eve.^{(AF) 14} And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.^{(AG) 15} But women^[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love^(AH) and holiness with propriety.

³³ “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.^{(A) 34} You brood of vipers,^(B) how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks^(C) what the heart is full of. ³⁵ A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. ³⁶ But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. ³⁷ For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”^(D)

The Sign of Jonah^(E)(F)

³⁸ Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign^(G) from you.”^(H)

³⁹ He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.^{(I) 40} For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish,^(J) so the Son of Man^(K) will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.^{(L) 41} The men of Nineveh^(M) will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,^(N) and now something greater than Jonah is here. ⁴² The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came^(O) from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.
