Warning Against Adultery

(A)My son, be attentive to my wisdom;
    (B)incline your ear to my understanding,
that you may keep (C)discretion,
    and your lips may (D)guard knowledge.
For the lips of (E)a forbidden[a] woman drip honey,
    and her speech[b] is (F)smoother than oil,
but in the end she is (G)bitter as (H)wormwood,
    (I)sharp as (J)a two-edged sword.
Her feet (K)go down to death;
    her steps follow the path to[c] Sheol;
she (L)does not ponder the path of life;
    her ways wander, and she does not know it.

And (M)now, O sons, listen to me,
    and do not depart from the words of my mouth.
Keep your way far from her,
    and do not go near the door of her house,
lest you give your honor to others
    and your years to the merciless,
10 lest strangers take their fill of your strength,
    and your (N)labors go to the house of a foreigner,
11 and at the end of your life you (O)groan,
    when your flesh and body are consumed,
12 and you say, (P)“How I hated discipline,
    and my heart (Q)despised reproof!
13 I did not listen to the voice of my teachers
    or incline my ear to my instructors.
14 (R)I am at the brink of utter ruin
    in the assembled congregation.”

15 Drink (S)water from your own cistern,
    flowing water from your own well.
16 Should your (T)springs be scattered abroad,
    streams of water (U)in the streets?
17 (V)Let them be for yourself alone,
    and not for strangers with you.
18 Let your (W)fountain be blessed,
    and (X)rejoice in (Y)the wife of your youth,
19     a lovely (Z)deer, a graceful doe.
Let her breasts (AA)fill you at all times with delight;
    be intoxicated[d] always in her love.
20 Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with (AB)a forbidden woman
    and embrace the bosom of (AC)an adulteress?[e]
21 For (AD)a man's ways are (AE)before the eyes of the Lord,
    and he (AF)ponders[f] all his paths.
22 The (AG)iniquities of the wicked (AH)ensnare him,
    and he is held fast in the cords of his sin.
23 (AI)He dies for lack of discipline,
    and because of his great folly he is (AJ)led astray.

Practical Warnings

My son, if you have put up (AK)security for your neighbor,
    have (AL)given your pledge for a stranger,
if you are (AM)snared in the words of your mouth,
    caught in the words of your mouth,
then do this, my son, and save yourself,
    for you have come into the hand of your neighbor:
    go, hasten,[g] and (AN)plead urgently with your neighbor.
(AO)Give your eyes no sleep
    and your eyelids no slumber;
save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,[h]
    (AP)like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

(AQ)Go to (AR)the ant, O (AS)sluggard;
    consider her ways, and (AT)be wise.
(AU)Without having any chief,
    (AV)officer, or ruler,
she prepares her bread (AW)in summer
    and (AX)gathers her food in harvest.
(AY)How long will you lie there, (AZ)O sluggard?
    When will you arise from your sleep?
10 (BA)A little sleep, a little slumber,
    (BB)a little (BC)folding of the hands to rest,
11 (BD)and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
    and want like an armed man.

12 (BE)A worthless person, a wicked man,
    goes about with (BF)crooked speech,
13 (BG)winks with his eyes, signals[i] with his feet,
    points with his finger,
14 with (BH)perverted heart (BI)devises evil,
    continually (BJ)sowing discord;
15 therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;
    (BK)in a moment he will be broken (BL)beyond healing.

16 There are (BM)six things that the Lord hates,
    (BN)seven that are an abomination to him:
17 (BO)haughty eyes, (BP)a lying tongue,
    and (BQ)hands that shed innocent blood,
18 (BR)a heart that devises wicked plans,
    (BS)feet that make haste to run to evil,
19 (BT)a false witness who (BU)breathes out lies,
    and one who (BV)sows discord among brothers.

Warnings Against Adultery

20 (BW)My son, keep your father's commandment,
    (BX)and forsake not your mother's teaching.
21 (BY)Bind them on your heart always;
    (BZ)tie them around your neck.
22 (CA)When you walk, they[j] will lead you;
    (CB)when you lie down, they will (CC)watch over you;
    and when you awake, they will talk with you.
23 For the commandment is (CD)a lamp and the teaching a light,
    and the (CE)reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
24 to preserve you from the evil woman,[k]
    from the smooth tongue of (CF)the adulteress.[l]
25 (CG)Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
    and do not let her capture you with her (CH)eyelashes;
26 for (CI)the price of a prostitute is only (CJ)a loaf of bread,[m]
    but a married woman[n] (CK)hunts down a precious life.
27 Can a man carry (CL)fire next to his (CM)chest
    and his clothes not be burned?
28 Or can one (CN)walk on hot coals
    and his feet not be scorched?
29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife;
    none who touches her (CO)will go unpunished.
30 People do not despise a thief if he steals
    to (CP)satisfy his appetite when he is hungry,
31 but (CQ)if he is caught, he will pay (CR)sevenfold;
    he will give all the goods of his house.
32 He who commits adultery lacks sense;
    he who does it destroys himself.
33 He will get wounds and dishonor,
    and his disgrace will not be wiped away.
34 For (CS)jealousy makes a man furious,
    and he will not spare when (CT)he takes revenge.
35 He will accept no compensation;
    he will refuse though you multiply gifts.

Warning Against the Adulteress

(CU)My son, keep my words
    and (CV)treasure up my commandments with you;
(CW)keep my commandments and live;
    keep my teaching as (CX)the apple of your eye;
(CY)bind them on your fingers;
    (CZ)write them on the tablet of your heart.
Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
    and call insight your intimate friend,
to keep you from (DA)the forbidden[o] woman,
    from (DB)the adulteress[p] with her smooth words.

For at (DC)the window of my house
    I have looked out through my lattice,
and I have seen among (DD)the simple,
    I have perceived among the youths,
    a young man (DE)lacking sense,
passing along the street (DF)near her corner,
    taking the road to her house
in (DG)the twilight, in the evening,
    at (DH)the time of night and darkness.

10 And behold, the woman meets him,
    (DI)dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.[q]
11 She is (DJ)loud and (DK)wayward;
    (DL)her feet do not stay at home;
12 now in the street, now in the market,
    and (DM)at every corner she (DN)lies in wait.
13 She seizes him and kisses him,
    and with (DO)bold face she says to him,
14 “I had to (DP)offer sacrifices,[r]
    and today I have (DQ)paid my vows;
15 so now I have come out to meet you,
    to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.
16 I have spread my couch with (DR)coverings,
    colored linens from (DS)Egyptian linen;
17 I have perfumed my bed with (DT)myrrh,
    aloes, and (DU)cinnamon.
18 Come, let us take our fill of love till morning;
    let us delight ourselves with love.
19 For (DV)my husband is not at home;
    he has gone on a long journey;
20 he took a bag of money with him;
    at full moon he will come home.”

21 With much seductive speech she persuades him;
    with (DW)her smooth talk she compels him.
22 All at once he follows her,
    as an ox goes to the slaughter,
or as a stag is caught fast[s]
23     till an arrow pierces its liver;
as (DX)a bird rushes into a snare;
    he does not know that it will cost him his life.

24 And (DY)now, O sons, listen to me,
    and be attentive to the words of my mouth.
25 Let not your heart turn aside to her ways;
    do not stray into her paths,
26 for many a victim has she laid low,
    and all her slain are (DZ)a mighty throng.
27 Her house is (EA)the way to Sheol,
    going down to the chambers of death.

The Blessings of Wisdom

Does not (EB)wisdom call?
    Does not (EC)understanding raise her voice?
On (ED)the heights beside the way,
    at the crossroads she takes her stand;
beside (EE)the gates in front of (EF)the town,
    at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:
“To you, O (EG)men, I call,
    and my cry is to (EH)the children of man.
O (EI)simple ones, learn (EJ)prudence;
    O (EK)fools, learn sense.
Hear, for I will speak (EL)noble things,
    and from my lips will come (EM)what is right,
for my (EN)mouth will utter truth;
    wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
All the words of my mouth are righteous;
    there is nothing (EO)twisted or crooked in them.
They are all (EP)straight to him who understands,
    and right to those who find knowledge.
10 (EQ)Take my instruction instead of silver,
    and knowledge rather than choice gold,
11 (ER)for wisdom is better than jewels,
    and (ES)all that you may desire cannot compare with her.

12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
    and I find knowledge and (ET)discretion.
13 (EU)The fear of the Lord is (EV)hatred of evil.
(EW)Pride and arrogance and the way of evil
    and (EX)perverted speech I hate.
14 I have (EY)counsel and (EZ)sound wisdom;
    I have insight; (FA)I have strength.
15 By me (FB)kings reign,
    and rulers decree what is just;
16 by me princes rule,
    and nobles, all who govern justly.[t]
17 (FC)I love those who love me,
    and (FD)those who seek me diligently find me.
18 (FE)Riches and honor are with me,
    (FF)enduring wealth and (FG)righteousness.
19 My fruit is (FH)better than (FI)gold, even fine gold,
    and my yield than (FJ)choice silver.
20 I walk in the way of righteousness,
    in the paths of justice,
21 granting an inheritance to those who love me,
    and filling their treasuries.

22 (FK)“The Lord (FL)possessed[u] me at the beginning of his work,[v]
    the first of his acts (FM)of old.
23 Ages ago I was (FN)set up,
    at the first, (FO)before the beginning of the earth.
24 When there were no (FP)depths I was (FQ)brought forth,
    when there were no springs abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains (FR)had been shaped,
    (FS)before the hills, I was brought forth,
26 before he had made the earth with its fields,
    or the first of the dust of the world.
27 When he (FT)established the heavens, I was there;
    when he drew (FU)a circle on the face of the deep,
28 when he (FV)made firm the skies above,
    when he established[w] the fountains of the deep,
29 when he (FW)assigned to the sea its (FX)limit,
    so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out (FY)the foundations of the earth,
30     then (FZ)I was beside him, like a master workman,
and I was daily his[x] (GA)delight,
    rejoicing before him always,
31 (GB)rejoicing in his (GC)inhabited world
    and delighting in the children of man.

32 “And now, (GD)O sons, listen to me:
    (GE)blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 (GF)Hear instruction and be wise,
    and do not neglect it.
34 (GG)Blessed is the one who listens to me,
    watching daily at my gates,
    waiting beside my doors.
35 For (GH)whoever finds me (GI)finds life
    and (GJ)obtains favor from the Lord,
36 but he who fails to find me (GK)injures himself;
    all who (GL)hate me (GM)love death.”

Avoid Immoral Women

My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
    listen carefully to my wise counsel.
Then you will show discernment,
    and your lips will express what you’ve learned.
For the lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey,
    and her mouth is smoother than oil.
But in the end she is as bitter as poison,
    as dangerous as a double-edged sword.
Her feet go down to death;
    her steps lead straight to the grave.[a]
For she cares nothing about the path to life.
    She staggers down a crooked trail and doesn’t realize it.

So now, my sons, listen to me.
    Never stray from what I am about to say:
Stay away from her!
    Don’t go near the door of her house!
If you do, you will lose your honor
    and will lose to merciless people all you have achieved.
10 Strangers will consume your wealth,
    and someone else will enjoy the fruit of your labor.
11 In the end you will groan in anguish
    when disease consumes your body.
12 You will say, “How I hated discipline!
    If only I had not ignored all the warnings!
13 Oh, why didn’t I listen to my teachers?
    Why didn’t I pay attention to my instructors?
14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin,
    and now I must face public disgrace.”

15 Drink water from your own well—
    share your love only with your wife.[b]
16 Why spill the water of your springs in the streets,
    having sex with just anyone?[c]
17 You should reserve it for yourselves.
    Never share it with strangers.

18 Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you.
    Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 She is a loving deer, a graceful doe.
    Let her breasts satisfy you always.
    May you always be captivated by her love.
20 Why be captivated, my son, by an immoral woman,
    or fondle the breasts of a promiscuous woman?

21 For the Lord sees clearly what a man does,
    examining every path he takes.
22 An evil man is held captive by his own sins;
    they are ropes that catch and hold him.
23 He will die for lack of self-control;
    he will be lost because of his great foolishness.

Lessons for Daily Life

My child,[d] if you have put up security for a friend’s debt
    or agreed to guarantee the debt of a stranger—
if you have trapped yourself by your agreement
    and are caught by what you said—
follow my advice and save yourself,
    for you have placed yourself at your friend’s mercy.
Now swallow your pride;
    go and beg to have your name erased.
Don’t put it off; do it now!
    Don’t rest until you do.
Save yourself like a gazelle escaping from a hunter,
    like a bird fleeing from a net.

Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones.
    Learn from their ways and become wise!
Though they have no prince
    or governor or ruler to make them work,
they labor hard all summer,
    gathering food for the winter.
But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep?
    When will you wake up?
10 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber,
    a little folding of the hands to rest—
11 then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit;
    scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.

12 What are worthless and wicked people like?
    They are constant liars,
13 signaling their deceit with a wink of the eye,
    a nudge of the foot, or the wiggle of fingers.
14 Their perverted hearts plot evil,
    and they constantly stir up trouble.
15 But they will be destroyed suddenly,
    broken in an instant beyond all hope of healing.

16 There are six things the Lord hates—
    no, seven things he detests:
17 haughty eyes,
    a lying tongue,
    hands that kill the innocent,
18 a heart that plots evil,
    feet that race to do wrong,
19 a false witness who pours out lies,
    a person who sows discord in a family.

20 My son, obey your father’s commands,
    and don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.
21 Keep their words always in your heart.
    Tie them around your neck.
22 When you walk, their counsel will lead you.
    When you sleep, they will protect you.
    When you wake up, they will advise you.
23 For their command is a lamp
    and their instruction a light;
their corrective discipline
    is the way to life.
24 It will keep you from the immoral woman,
    from the smooth tongue of a promiscuous woman.
25 Don’t lust for her beauty.
    Don’t let her coy glances seduce you.
26 For a prostitute will bring you to poverty,[e]
    but sleeping with another man’s wife will cost you your life.
27 Can a man scoop a flame into his lap
    and not have his clothes catch on fire?
28 Can he walk on hot coals
    and not blister his feet?
29 So it is with the man who sleeps with another man’s wife.
    He who embraces her will not go unpunished.

30 Excuses might be found for a thief
    who steals because he is starving.
31 But if he is caught, he must pay back seven times what he stole,
    even if he has to sell everything in his house.
32 But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool,
    for he destroys himself.
33 He will be wounded and disgraced.
    His shame will never be erased.
34 For the woman’s jealous husband will be furious,
    and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
35 He will accept no compensation,
    nor be satisfied with a payoff of any size.

Another Warning about Immoral Women

Follow my advice, my son;
    always treasure my commands.
Obey my commands and live!
    Guard my instructions as you guard your own eyes.[f]
Tie them on your fingers as a reminder.
    Write them deep within your heart.

Love wisdom like a sister;
    make insight a beloved member of your family.
Let them protect you from an affair with an immoral woman,
    from listening to the flattery of a promiscuous woman.

While I was at the window of my house,
    looking through the curtain,
I saw some naive young men,
    and one in particular who lacked common sense.
He was crossing the street near the house of an immoral woman,
    strolling down the path by her house.
It was at twilight, in the evening,
    as deep darkness fell.
10 The woman approached him,
    seductively dressed and sly of heart.
11 She was the brash, rebellious type,
    never content to stay at home.
12 She is often in the streets and markets,
    soliciting at every corner.
13 She threw her arms around him and kissed him,
    and with a brazen look she said,
14 “I’ve just made my peace offerings
    and fulfilled my vows.
15 You’re the one I was looking for!
    I came out to find you, and here you are!
16 My bed is spread with beautiful blankets,
    with colored sheets of Egyptian linen.
17 I’ve perfumed my bed
    with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Come, let’s drink our fill of love until morning.
    Let’s enjoy each other’s caresses,
19 for my husband is not home.
    He’s away on a long trip.
20 He has taken a wallet full of money with him
    and won’t return until later this month.[g]

21 So she seduced him with her pretty speech
    and enticed him with her flattery.
22 He followed her at once,
    like an ox going to the slaughter.
He was like a stag caught in a trap,[h]
23     awaiting the arrow that would pierce its heart.
He was like a bird flying into a snare,
    little knowing it would cost him his life.

24 So listen to me, my sons,
    and pay attention to my words.
25 Don’t let your hearts stray away toward her.
    Don’t wander down her wayward path.
26 For she has been the ruin of many;
    many men have been her victims.
27 Her house is the road to the grave.[i]
    Her bedroom is the den of death.

Wisdom Calls for a Hearing

Listen as Wisdom calls out!
    Hear as understanding raises her voice!
On the hilltop along the road,
    she takes her stand at the crossroads.
By the gates at the entrance to the town,
    on the road leading in, she cries aloud,
“I call to you, to all of you!
    I raise my voice to all people.
You simple people, use good judgment.
    You foolish people, show some understanding.
Listen to me! For I have important things to tell you.
    Everything I say is right,
for I speak the truth
    and detest every kind of deception.
My advice is wholesome.
    There is nothing devious or crooked in it.
My words are plain to anyone with understanding,
    clear to those with knowledge.
10 Choose my instruction rather than silver,
    and knowledge rather than pure gold.
11 For wisdom is far more valuable than rubies.
    Nothing you desire can compare with it.

12 “I, Wisdom, live together with good judgment.
    I know where to discover knowledge and discernment.
13 All who fear the Lord will hate evil.
    Therefore, I hate pride and arrogance,
    corruption and perverse speech.
14 Common sense and success belong to me.
    Insight and strength are mine.
15 Because of me, kings reign,
    and rulers make just decrees.
16 Rulers lead with my help,
    and nobles make righteous judgments.[j]

17 “I love all who love me.
    Those who search will surely find me.
18 I have riches and honor,
    as well as enduring wealth and justice.
19 My gifts are better than gold, even the purest gold,
    my wages better than sterling silver!
20 I walk in righteousness,
    in paths of justice.
21 Those who love me inherit wealth.
    I will fill their treasuries.

22 “The Lord formed me from the beginning,
    before he created anything else.
23 I was appointed in ages past,
    at the very first, before the earth began.
24 I was born before the oceans were created,
    before the springs bubbled forth their waters.
25 Before the mountains were formed,
    before the hills, I was born—
26 before he had made the earth and fields
    and the first handfuls of soil.
27 I was there when he established the heavens,
    when he drew the horizon on the oceans.
28 I was there when he set the clouds above,
    when he established springs deep in the earth.
29 I was there when he set the limits of the seas,
    so they would not spread beyond their boundaries.
And when he marked off the earth’s foundations,
30     I was the architect at his side.
I was his constant delight,
    rejoicing always in his presence.
31 And how happy I was with the world he created;
    how I rejoiced with the human family!

32 “And so, my children,[k] listen to me,
    for all who follow my ways are joyful.
33 Listen to my instruction and be wise.
    Don’t ignore it.
34 Joyful are those who listen to me,
    watching for me daily at my gates,
    waiting for me outside my home!
35 For whoever finds me finds life
    and receives favor from the Lord.
36 But those who miss me injure themselves.
    All who hate me love death.”
