11 My son,(S) do not despise the Lord’s discipline,(T)
    and do not resent his rebuke,

    and the clouds let drop the dew.

21 My son,(AH) do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight,(AI)
    preserve sound judgment and discretion;

32 For the Lord detests the perverse(AW)

Trust God

My child, remember
my teachings and instructions
    and obey them completely.
They will help you live
    a long and prosperous life.
Let love and loyalty
always show like a necklace,
    and write them in your mind.
(A) God and people will like you
    and hold you in high esteem.

With all your heart
you must trust the Lord
    and not your own judgment.
Always let him lead you,
and he will clear the road
    for you to follow.
(B) Don't ever think that you
    are wise enough,
but respect the Lord
    and stay away from evil.
This will make you healthy,
    and you will feel strong.
Honor the Lord by giving him
your money and the first part
    of all your crops.
10 Then you will have
more grain and grapes
    than you will ever need.

11 (C)(D) My child, don't turn away
or become bitter
    when the Lord corrects you.
12 (E) The Lord corrects
    everyone he loves,
just as parents correct
    a child they dearly love.

The Value of Wisdom

13 God blesses everyone
who has wisdom
    and common sense.
14 Wisdom is worth more
    than silver;
it makes you much richer
    than gold.
15 Wisdom is more valuable
    than precious jewels;
nothing you want
    compares with her.

16 In her right hand
    Wisdom holds a long life,
and in her left hand
    are wealth and honor.
17 Wisdom makes life pleasant
    and leads us safely along.
18 Wisdom is a life-giving tree,
the source of happiness
    for all who hold on to her.

19 By his wisdom and knowledge
the Lord created
    heaven and earth.
20 By his understanding
he let the ocean break loose
    and clouds release the rain.
21 My child, use common sense
and sound judgment!
    Always keep them in mind.
22 They will help you to live
    a long and beautiful life.
23 You will walk safely
    and never stumble;
24 you will rest without a worry
    and sleep soundly.
25 So don't be afraid
    of sudden disasters
or storms that strike
    those who are evil.
26 You can be sure that the Lord
    will protect you from harm.

27 (F) Do all you can for everyone
    who deserves your help.
28 Don't tell your neighbor
to come back tomorrow,
    if you can help today.
29 Don't try to be mean
    to neighbors who trust you.
30 Don't argue just to be arguing,
    when you haven't been hurt.
31 Don't be jealous
of cruel people
    or follow their example.

32 The Lord doesn't like
    anyone who is dishonest,
but he lets good people
    be his friends.
33 He places a curse on the home
    of everyone who is evil,
but he blesses the home
    of every good person.
34 (G) The Lord sneers at those
    who sneer at him,
but he is kind to everyone
    who is humble.
35 You will be praised
    if you are wise,
but you will be disgraced
    if you are a stubborn fool.

Admonition to Trust and Honor God

My son, do not forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commandments;
for length of days and years of life
    and abundant welfare will they give you.

Let not loyalty and faithfulness forsake you;
    bind them about your neck,
    write them on the tablet of your heart.
So you will find favor and good repute[a]
    in the sight of God and man.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not rely on your own insight.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
    fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh[b]
    and refreshment[c] to your bones.

Honor the Lord with your substance
    and with the first fruits of all your produce;
10 then your barns will be filled with plenty,
    and your vats will be bursting with wine.

11 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline
    or be weary of his reproof,
12 for the Lord reproves him whom he loves,
    as a father the son in whom he delights.

The True Wealth

13 Happy is the man who finds wisdom,
    and the man who gets understanding,
14 for the gain from it is better than gain from silver
    and its profit better than gold.
15 She is more precious than jewels,
    and nothing you desire can compare with her.
16 Long life is in her right hand;
    in her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
    and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her;
    those who hold her fast are called happy.

God’s Wisdom in Creation

19 The Lord by wisdom founded the earth;
    by understanding he established the heavens;
20 by his knowledge the deeps broke forth,
    and the clouds drop down the dew.

The True Security

21 My son, keep sound wisdom and discretion;
    let them not escape from your sight,[d]
22 and they will be life for your soul
    and adornment for your neck.
23 Then you will walk on your way securely
    and your foot will not stumble.
24 If you sit down,[e] you will not be afraid;
    when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
25 Do not be afraid of sudden panic,
    or of the ruin[f] of the wicked, when it comes;
26 for the Lord will be your confidence
    and will keep your foot from being caught.
27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it[g] is due,
    when it is in your power to do it.

28 Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again,
    tomorrow I will give it”—when you have it with you.
29 Do not plan evil against your neighbor
    who dwells trustingly beside you.
30 Do not contend with a man for no reason,
    when he has done you no harm.
31 Do not envy a man of violence
    and do not choose any of his ways;
32 for the perverse man is an abomination to the Lord,
    but the upright are in his confidence.
33 The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked,
    but he blesses the abode of the righteous.
34 Toward the scorners he is scornful,
    but to the humble he shows favor.
35 The wise will inherit honor,
    but fools get[h] disgrace.

Advice to the Young

My child, don't forget what I teach you. Always remember what I tell you to do. My teaching will give you a long and prosperous life. Never let go of loyalty and faithfulness. Tie them around your neck; write them on your heart. (A)If you do this, both God and people will be pleased with you.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way. (B)Never let yourself think that you are wiser than you are; simply obey the Lord and refuse to do wrong. If you do, it will be like good medicine, healing your wounds and easing your pains. Honor the Lord by making him an offering from the best of all that your land produces. 10 If you do, your barns will be filled with grain, and you will have too much wine to store it all.

11 (C)My child, when the Lord corrects you, pay close attention and take it as a warning. 12 (D)The Lord corrects those he loves, as parents correct a child of whom they are proud. 13 Happy is anyone who becomes wise—who comes to have understanding. 14 There is more profit in it than there is in silver; it is worth more to you than gold. 15 Wisdom is more valuable than jewels; nothing you could want can compare with it. 16 Wisdom offers you long life, as well as wealth and honor. 17 Wisdom can make your life pleasant and lead you safely through it. 18 Those who become wise are happy; wisdom will give them life.

19 The Lord created the earth by his wisdom;
    by his knowledge he set the sky in place.
20 His wisdom caused the rivers to flow
    and the clouds to give rain to the earth.

21 My child, hold on to your wisdom and insight. Never let them get away from you. 22 They will provide you with life—a pleasant and happy life. 23 You can go safely on your way and never even stumble. 24 You will not be afraid when you go to bed, and you will sleep soundly through the night. 25 You will not have to worry about sudden disasters, such as come on the wicked like a storm. 26 The Lord will keep you safe. He will not let you fall into a trap.

27 (E)Whenever you possibly can, do good to those who need it. 28 Never tell your neighbors to wait until tomorrow if you can help them now. 29 Don't plan anything that will hurt your neighbors; they live beside you, trusting you. 30 Don't argue with others for no reason when they have never done you any harm. 31 Don't be jealous of violent people or decide to act as they do, 32 because the Lord hates people who do evil, but he takes righteous people into his confidence. 33 The Lord puts a curse on the homes of the wicked, but blesses the homes of the righteous. 34 (F)He has no use for conceited people, but shows favor to those who are humble. 35 Wise people will gain an honorable reputation, but stupid people will only add to their own disgrace.
